RESUMEN

Pasture management is an important topic for dairy farms with grazing systems. Herbage mass (HM) is a key measure, and estimations of HM content in pastures allow for informed decisions in pasture management. A common method of estimating the HM content in pastures requires manually collected grass samples, which are subjected to laboratory analysis to determine the dry matter (DM) content. However, in recent years, new methods have emerged that generate digital data and aim to expedite, facilitate and improve the measurement of HM. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of a rising plate meter (RPM) tool in a practical setting to estimate HM in Austrian pastures. With this study, we also attempted to answer whether the tool is ready for use by farmers with its default settings. This study was conducted on the teaching and research farm of the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, Austria. Data were collected from May to October 2021 in five different pastures. To evaluate the accuracy of the RPM tool, grass samples were collected and dried in an oven to extract their DM and calculate the HM. The HM obtained from the grass samples was used as the gold standard for this study. In total, 3796 RPM measurements and 203 grass samples yielding 49 measurement points were used for the evaluation of the RPM tool. Despite the differences in pasture composition, the averaged HM from the RPM tool showed a strong correlation with the gold standard (R2 = 0.73, rp = 0.86, RMSE = 517.86, CV = 33.67%). However, the results may not be good enough to justify the use of the tool, because simulations in economic studies suggest that the error of prediction should be lower than 15%. Furthermore, in some pastures, the RPM obtained poor results, indicating an additional need for pasture-specific calibrations, which complicates the use of the RPM tool.

OBJECTIVES: The use of digital technologies is increasing in modern livestock farming and veterinary practice. The aim of this online survey among Austrian cattle practitioners was to increase knowledge concerning the acceptance and use of digital (sensor) technologies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The link to the survey was sent by the Austrian animal health services (TGD) via email to the registered veterinarians. A total of 115 veterinarians participated in the survey. RESULTS: Most of the participants were convinced that digitalisation associated with improvements in their profession in terms of economy, time-savings, collaboration with colleagues and working efficiency. The agreement ranged between 60% and 79%. On the other hand, concerns regarding data security (41%) were also raised. When asked whether they would recommend sensor systems to farmers, approximately 45% of the participants answered yes, 36% declined, 19% were undecided. From a list of specified sensors and technologies, monitoring by cameras (68%), automatic concentrate feeding systems (63%) and activity sensors (61%) were considered as beneficial for animal health. Concerning an assessment of the animals' health status the majority of respondents (58%) would trust conventional methods more than sensor systems. Data provided by farmers is mainly used to improve the understanding of patients' disease progression (67%) as well as to comply with documentation requirements (28%). In addition, we asked whether the participants could imagine running a telemedicine practice. On a scale ranging from 1 to 100, initial agreement amounted to a median of 20 which then decreased to a median of 4 in the repeated question at the end of the questionnaire. CONCLUSIONS: The veterinarians saw advantages in using digital technologies both in their daily work and to improve animal health management. In some areas, however, clear reservations were evident . A telemedical offer does not seem to be relevant for the majority of the participants in the context of the description provided. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The results are intended to help identify areas in which more information is needed for veterinarians and to capture a picture of opinions that could be relevant for the changing collaboration between farmers and veterinarians.

Establishing fresh cow monitoring procedures is considered beneficial for cow health, welfare, and productivity. However, they are time consuming and require the cows to be locked up, which restricts their natural behavior. In this study, different fresh cow monitoring procedures were evaluated. Two experiments were conducted to determine: (1) the duration of various examinations and treatments; (2) the time cows remain locked up in headlocks; and (3) the proportion of examination and treatment times relative to the total headlock time. In advance, standard operating procedures were established. Three veterinarians conducted the examinations and treatments based on changes in milk yield, clinical symptoms, and alarms by an accelerometer system. The headlock time was evaluated for three workflow strategies, which differed in the order of examinations and treatments. To determine the duration, cameras were installed, and the video footage was analyzed. The examinations lasted between 1 and 227 s, and the cows were locked up in headlocks between 0.01 and 1.76 h. The lock-up times differed significantly among the three strategies, as well as the proportion. This study provides information that can be used as a basis for the development of time-efficient strategies, and to minimize the impact on cows' time budgets.

Monitoring rumination activity is considered a useful indicator for the early detection of diseases and metabolic disorders. Accelerometer-based sensor systems provide health alerts based on individual thresholds of rumination times in dairy cows. Detailed knowledge of the relationship between sensor-based rumination times and rumen physiology would help detect conspicuous animals and evaluate the treatment's success. This study aimed to investigate the association between sensor-based health alerts and rumen fluid characteristics in Holstein-Friesian cows at different stages of lactation. Rumen fluid was collected via a stomach tube from 63 pairs of cows with and without health alerts (ALRT vs NALRT). Pairs were matched based on the day of lactation, the number of lactations, and health criteria. Rumen fluid was collected during and after health alerts. The parameters of color, odor, consistency, pH, redox potential, sedimentation flotation time, and the number of protozoa were examined. Results showed differences between both groups in odor, rumen pH, sedimentation flotation time, and protozoan count at the first rumen fluid collection. Within the groups, greater variations in rumen fluid parameters were found for ALRT cows compared to NALRT cows. The interaction between health alert and stage of lactation did not affect the rumen fluid parameters.

Post calving metabolic stress reduces the fertility of high producing dairy cows possibly by altering the expression of genes in the maternal environment via epigenetic modifications. Therefore, this study was conducted to identify endometrial DNA methylation marks that can be associated with pregnancy outcomes in postpartum cows at the time of breeding. For this, twelve days post-calving, cows were either offered a control diet or supplemented daily with rumen-protected methionine. Cows showing heat 50-64 days postpartum were artificially inseminated. Endometrial cytobrush samples were collected 4-8 h after artificial insemination and classified based on the pregnancy out comes as those derived from cows that resulted in pregnancy or resulted in no pregnancy. The DNAs isolated from endometrial samples were then subject to reduced representative bisulfite sequencing for DNA methylation analysis. Results showed that in the control diet group, 1,958 differentially methylated CpG sites (DMCGs) were identified between cows that resulted in pregnancy and those that resulted in no pregnancy of which 890 DMCGs were located on chr 27: 6217254-6225600 bp. A total of 537 DMCGs were overlapped with 313 annotated genes that were involved in various pathways including signal transduction, signalling by GPCR, aldosterone synthesis and secretion. Likewise, in methionine supplemented group, 3,430 CpG sites were differentially methylated between the two cow groups of which 18.7% were located on Chr27: 6217254-6225600 bp. A total of 1,781 DMCGS were overlapped with 890 genes which involved in developmental and signalling related pathways including WNT-signalling, focal adhesion and ECM receptor interaction. Interestingly, 149 genes involved in signal transduction, axon guidance and non-integrin membrane-ECM interactions were differentially methylated between the two cow groups irrespective of their feeding regime, while 453 genes involved in axon guidance, notch signalling and collagen formation were differentially methylated between cows that received rumen protected methionine and control diet irrespective of their fertility status. Overall, this study indicated that postpartum cows that could potentially become pregnant could be distinguishable based on their endometrial DNA methylation patterns at the time of breeding.

Lying is a high priority behavior for dairy cows. As the quality of cubicles can influence their lying time, the interest in finding objective methods to assess the quality of floors has increased substantially over recent decades. This study aimed to evaluate a technical device for measuring elastic properties of floors for the application to bedding materials for cows. Ten different floor types were used: horse manure, recycled manure solids, bark mulch, sand, sawdust, and three different rubber mats. Horse manure and bark mulch were additionally tested with chopped straw as a top layer. Two devices of the same kind and two examiners were available for performing comparative measurements. Regression analyses and an ANOVA were conducted to compare the devices, examiners, and different surfaces. Most of the floors differed significantly from each other. Sawdust was the softest material, followed by sand and recycled manure solids. The agreement between the devices (Lin's concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) > 0.99, Spearman's rank correlation coefficient (rS) = 0.99) and examiners (CCC = 0.99, rS = 0.99) was almost perfect. These findings indicate that this device can be used as a new method for assessing the softness of bedding materials for dairy cows objectively.

Accelerometers (ACL) can identify behavioral and activity changes in calves. In the present study, we examined the association between bovine respiratory disease (BRD) and behavioral changes detected by an ear-tag based ACL system in weaned dairy calves. Accelerometer data were analyzed from 7 d before to 1 d after clinical diagnosis of BRD. All calves in the study (n = 508) were checked daily by an adapted University of Wisconsin Calf Scoring System. Calves with a score ≥ 4 and fever for at least two consecutive days were categorized as diseased (DIS). The day of clinical diagnosis of BRD was defined as d 0. The data analysis showed a significant difference in high active times between DIS and healthy control calves (CON), with CON showing more high active times on every day, except d -3. Diseased calves showed significantly more inactive times on d -4, -2, and 0, as well as longer lying times on d -5, -2, and +1. These results indicate the potential of the ACL to detect BRD prior to a clinical diagnosis in group-housed calves. Furthermore, in this study, we described the 'normal' behavior in 428 clinically healthy weaned dairy calves obtained by the ACL system.

Welfare assessment has traditionally been performed by direct observation by humans, providing information at only selected points in time. Recently, this assessment method has been questioned, as 'Precision Livestock Farming' technologies may be able to deliver more valid, reliable and feasible real-time data at the individual level and serve as early monitoring systems for animal welfare. The aim of this paper is to describe how accelerometers can be used for welfare assessment based on the principles of the Welfare Quality assessment protocol. Algorithm development is based mainly on the detection of behavioural traits. So far, high accuracies have been found for movement and resting behaviours in cows and pigs, while algorithm development for feeding and drinking behaviours in pigs lag behind progress in cows where valid algorithms are already available. Welfare studies have used accelerometer technology to address the effects on behaviour of diet, daily cycle, enrichment, housing, social mixing, oestrus, lameness and disease. Additional aspects to consider before a decision is made upon its use in research and in practical applications include battery life and sensor location. While accelerometer systems for cows are already being used by farmers, application in pigs has mainly remained at the research level.

A significant number of lactating dairy cows are affected by health disorders in the early postpartum period. Precision dairy farming technologies have tremendous potential to support farmers in detecting disordered cows before clinical manifestation of a disease. The objective of this study was to evaluate if activity and rumination measures obtained by a commercial 3D-accelerometer system, i.e. "lying", "high active", "inactive", and "rumination" times, can be used for early identification of cows with health deviations before the clinical manifestation of disease. A total of 312 Holstein cows equipped with an ear attached accelerometer (Smartbow GmbH, Weibern, Austria) were monitored and analyzed from 14 days prior to parturition to eight days in milk (DIM). Animals were checked daily for clinical disorders from zero to eight DIM using standard operating procedures and by blood ß-hydroxybutyrate measurements at three, five, and eight DIM. Cows that presented no symptoms of health problems and with BHB concentrations <1.2 mmol/L in the first eight DIM were classified as healthy (n = 156) and used as the reference in this study. Cows with disorders were allocated in groups with one disorder (n = 65) and >1 disorders (n = 91). "Rumination" durations per day were already shorter five days before the clinical diagnosis (D0) in diseased cows (401.9 ± 147.4 min/day) compared with healthy controls (434.6 ± 140.3 min/day). "Rumination" time decreased before the diagnosis, with a nadir at Day -1 for healthy cows and cows with >1 disorder (392.0 ± 147.9 vs. 313.4 ± 162.6 min/day). Cows with one disorder reached a nadir on Day -3 (388.8 ± 158.6 min/day). Similarly, the "high active" time started to become shorter three days before the clinical diagnosis in diseased cows compared to healthy cows (164.1 ± 119.1 vs. 200.3 ± 111.5 min/day). The times cows spent "inactive" were significantly longer three days before clinical diagnosis in diseased cows compared to healthy cows (421.7 ± 168.3 vs. 362.8 ± 117.6 min/day). "Lying" time started to become significantly longer one day before the diagnosis of disorders in disordered cows compared to healthy cows (691.8 ± 183.3 vs. 627.3 ± 158.0 min/day). On average, these results indicated a strong disturbance of physiological parameters before the clinical onset of disease. In summary, it was possible to show differences between disordered and healthy cows based on activity and "rumination" data recorded by a 3D-accelerometer.

Cows in estrus but with signs of clinical endometritis (CE) are often not inseminated or undergo an intrauterine treatment after artificial insemination (AI). Decades ago, the so-called Aström method was described as intrauterine infusion of iodine-potassium solution 2-4 days after AI. Nowadays, it is common to use antibiotics instead of iodine solution and the treatment is performed only a few hours after AI. Although widespread in practice, there is only little information about the efficacy of this treatment. Thus, this study evaluated the effect of a post-breeding intrauterine treatment with cephapirin on insemination success in cows with signs of mild CE. In total, 281 cows subjected to an Ovsynch program with fixed-time AI and examined for vaginal discharge straight after AI by use of the Metricheck device were included. Cows with cloudy discharge or flecks of pus in the mucus were assigned to a treatment or a control group. The treatment group (MET; n = 87) received 6 ± 1 h after AI an intrauterine treatment with 500 mg of cephapirin (Metricure, Intervet Deutschland GmbH). Control cows (CON; n = 91) remained untreated. Animals with clear discharge were assigned to a healthy comparison group (HE; n = 103). Pregnancy diagnosis was performed 39 days after AI. The proportion of pregnant cows after the AI directly preceding the enrollment did not differ significantly (P > 0.05) between HE (35.0%), CON (27.5%) and MET (32.2%). Cephapirin treatment had also no positive effect on other reproductive performance measures, i.e, the percentage of pregnant cows 200 days after enrollment (HE: 64.1%, CON: 73.6%, and MET: 73.6%) or the mean interval from enrollment to conception (HE: 25.4 days, CON: 30.0 days, and MET: 29.7 days). The binary logistic regression showed that the only risk factors with a detrimental effect on fertility were a history of CE 28-34 days postpartum and season. Although cows in MET and HE were 1.74 and 1.37 times more likely to conceive after AI than CON, this effect was not significant. Uterine sampling of a subset of cows with CE (n = 50) revealed 127 bacterial isolates. The most frequently found genera were Staphylococcus (19.7%), Bacillus (12.6%), Streptococcus (10.2%), Corynebacterium (8.7%), and Lysinibacillus (7.9%). The finding that common uterine pathogenic bacteria were rarely detected additionally questions an intrauterine antibiotic treatment of cows with mild CE at AI.

RESUMEN

Subclinical ketosis is a metabolic disease in early lactation. It contributes to economic losses because of reduced milk yield and may promote the development of secondary diseases. Thus, an early detection seems desirable as it enables the farmer to initiate countermeasures. To support early detection, we examine different types of data recordings and use them to build a flexible algorithm that predicts the occurence of subclinical ketosis. This approach shows promising results and can be seen as a step toward automatic health monitoring in farm animals.

There is evidence that supplementing methionine has positive effects on uterine environment, oocyte quality and embryo development in cattle. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate reproductive traits of cows supplemented with rumen-protected methionine (RPM) during early to mid-lactation in comparison with an untreated control group (CON). An additional focus was on the effect of puerperal diseases on reproductive performance parameters in RPM-supplemented group MET and in CON. A total of 1,709 multiparous Holstein-Friesian cows were enrolled in this field trial conducted on a commercial dairy farm in Slovakia. Cows were allocated at approximately 12 days post-partum (dpp) to either CON or MET, the latter supplemented with 25.0 g-27.2 g RPM per cow per day incorporated into the total mixed ration (TMR) until leaving the study pen at approximately 140 dpp. The amount of RPM was calculated based on individual feed ingredients analysis and adjusted during the study period when TMR changed. Cows were monitored during the post-partum period by vaginal examination (day 5 pp), measuring of beta-hydroxybutyrate in blood (3, 5, and 8 dpp) and by vaginal examination, uterine cytology and measuring of back fat thickness by ultrasound (all at 31 ± 3 dpp). Compared with CON, cows supplemented with RPM did not show better reproduction performance parameters (first service submission rate, days to first service, conception risk, days open 140). Results from binary logistic regression model for the risk of conception showed that metritis had a significant effect, but the supplementation of methionine had not. Results of Cox regression analysis for the odds of conception within 140 dpp revealed only metritis and clinical endometritis as significant factors. In conclusion, supplementation of RPM had no beneficial effect on reproductive performance in this study farm compared with an untreated control group.

The objectives of this study were (1) to develop an algorithm for the acceleration sensor of the Smartbow Eartag (Smartbow GmbH, Weibern, Austria) to distinguish between postures (lying and standing or locomotion) and to detect 6 kinds of activities (milk intake, water intake, solid feed intake, ruminating, licking or sucking without milk intake, and other activities) in dairy calves and (2) to evaluate this sensor for identifying these behaviors in dairy calves compared with observations from video. Accelerometers were applied to the left ears of 15 preweaned Holstein dairy calves. Calves were kept in a group pen and received milk replacer from an automatic calf feeder. Based on 38 h of acceleration data and video observation, an algorithm was established to detect the predefined behaviors. Using cross-validation, video recordings were used to analyze whether a behavior was detected correctly by the developed algorithm. For posture, sensitivity (94.4%), specificity (94.3%), precision (95.8%), and accuracy (94.3%) were high. Cohen's kappa was calculated as 0.88. For the 6 defined activities, overall (i.e., aggregated for all activities) accuracy was 70.8% and kappa was calculated as 0.58. Some activities (e.g., ruminating, feed intake, other activities) were identified better than others. In conclusion, the developed algorithm based on the acceleration data of the Smartbow Eartag was successful in detecting lying behavior, rumination, feed intake, and other activities in calves, but further development of the underlying algorithm will be necessary to produce reliable results for milk and water intake.

Human campylobacteriosis is primarily associated with poultry but also cattle. In this study, 55 Campylobacter jejuni strains isolated from 382 dairy calves' feces were differentiated by multilocus sequence typing and tested for antimicrobial resistance. The most prevalent sequence type (ST) was ST883 (20.0%), followed by ST48 (14.5%), and ST50 (9.1%). In contrast to ST48 and ST50, ST883 has rarely been described in cattle previously. Furthermore, risk factor analysis was performed for the presence of the most prevalent STs in these calves. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the type of farm (organic vs. conventional) and calf housing (place, and individual vs. group) were identified as significantly (p < 0.05) associated with the presence of ST883 in calves, and ST50 was associated with calf diarrhea. Antimicrobial resistance was detected in 58.2% of the isolates. Most of the resistant isolates (81.3%) were resistant to more than one antimicrobial. Most frequently, resistance to ciprofloxacin (49.1%), followed by nalidixic acid (42.8%), and tetracycline (14.5%) was observed. The results of the present study support the hypothesis that dairy calves may serve as a potential reservoir for C. jejuni and pose a risk for transmission, including antimicrobial resistant isolates to the environment and to humans.

A conventional dairy farm, housing 19 Austrian Simmental cows, experienced a spontaneous outbreak of a Mycoplasma bovis infection, showing severe clinical signs of respiratory tract disease, clinical mastitis, and tremendous drop in milk production. Despite intensive therapy, 5 cows died within 2 weeks or were euthanized. From the remaining cows, bacteriological culture and polymerase chain reaction revealed M. bovis in 10 of 14 milk samples. Mycoplasma bovis was found in 1 of 5 randomly collected nasal swabs. Autopsy of 1 cow revealed infection of the lungs and the udder with M. bovis. The 13 M. bovis isolates from milk samples, nasal swabs, lungs, and udder were genotyped by multilocus variable number of tandem-repeat analysis, and indicated that described infections were caused by a single M. bovis strain. The virulent M. bovis strain resulted in dramatic economic loss to the farmer. To control the disease, culling of all animals, including heifers and calves, was recommended, and strict hygienic measures were implemented before introducing new animals to the farm.

BACKGROUND: Calf disease may result in great economic losses. To implement prevention strategies it is important to gain information on management and to point out risk factors. The objective of this internet based survey was to describe calf management practices on registered dairy breeding farms in Austria and to estimate differences in calf disease incidences depending on farm structure and management practices. RESULTS: A total of 1287 questionnaires were finally analysed (response rate 12.2 %). Herd characteristics and regional distribution of farms indicated that this survey gives a good overview on calf management practices on registered dairy farms in Austria. The median number of cows per farm was 20 (interquartile range 13-30). Significant differences regarding farm characteristics and calf management between small and large farms (≤20 vs >20 cows) were present. Only 2.8 % of farmers tested first colostrum quality by use of a hydrometer. Storing frozen colostrum was more prevalent on large farms (80.8 vs 64.2 %). On 85.1 % of the farms, whole milk, including waste milk, was fed to the calves. Milk replacer and waste milk were more often used on large farms. In accordance with similar studies from other countries, calf diarrhoea was indicated as the most prevalent disease. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that herd size was associated with calf diarrhoea and calf respiratory tract disease, with higher risk of disease on large farms. Furthermore, feeding waste milk to the calves was associated with increasing calf diarrhoea incidence on farm. In the final model with calf respiratory tract disease as outcome, respondents from organic farms reported less often a respiratory tract disease incidence of over 10 % compared with conventional farms [odds ratio (OR) 0.40, 95 % confidence interval (CI) 0.21-0.75] and farmers that housed calves individually or in groups after birth significantly reported more often to have an incidence of respiratory tract disease >10 % compared with farms where all calves were housed individually (OR 2.28, 95 % CI 1.16-4.48). CONCLUSION: The results obtained in this study provide an overview on calf management on dairy breeding farms in Austria and may help to further point out areas to be improved on farm.

RESUMEN

The objective of the current review is to provide the reader with an overview of the bovine hematological profile. Sample collection, bovine reference ranges, and cattle-specific characteristics of erythrocyte, leukocyte, and platelet parameters are reviewed. Furthermore, diseases associated with abnormalities in the complete blood cell count of cattle are discussed.
