RESUMEN

Intracorporeal needle-based therapeutic ultrasound (NBTU) is a minimally invasive option for intervening in malignant brain tumors, commonly used in thermal ablation procedures. This technique is suitable for both primary and metastatic cancers, utilizing a high-frequency alternating electric field (up to 10 MHz) to excite a piezoelectric transducer. The resulting rapid deformation of the transducer produces an acoustic wave that propagates through tissue, leading to localized high-temperature heating at the target tumor site and inducing rapid cell death. To optimize the design of NBTU transducers for thermal dose delivery during treatment, numerical modeling of the acoustic pressure field generated by the deforming piezoelectric transducer is frequently employed. The bioheat transfer process generated by the input pressure field is used to track the thermal propagation of the applicator over time. Magnetic resonance thermal imaging (MRTI) can be used to experimentally validate these models. Validation results using MRTI demonstrated the feasibility of this model, showing a consistent thermal propagation pattern. However, a thermal damage isodose map is more advantageous for evaluating therapeutic efficacy. To achieve a more accurate simulation based on the actual brain tissue environment, a new finite element method (FEM) simulation with enhanced damage evaluation capabilities was conducted. The results showed that the highest temperature and ablated volume differed between experimental and simulation results by 2.1884°C (3.71%) and 0.0631 cm3 (5.74%), respectively. The lowest Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) for peak temperature was 0.7117, and the lowest Dice coefficient for the ablated area was 0.7021, indicating a good agreement in accuracy between simulation and experiment.

Intracorporeal needle-based therapeutic ultrasound (NBTU) offers a minimally invasive approach for the thermal ablation of malignant brain tumors, including both primary and metastatic cancers. NBTU utilizes a high-frequency alternating electric field to excite a piezoelectric transducer, generating acoustic waves that cause localized heating and tumor cell ablation, and it provides a more precise ablation by delivering lower acoustic power doses directly to targeted tumors while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. Building on our previous work, this study introduces a database for optimizing pre-operative surgical planning by simulating ablation effects in varied tissue environments and develops an extended simulation model incorporating various tumor types and sizes to evaluate thermal damage under trans-tissue conditions. A comprehensive database is created from these simulations, detailing critical parameters such as CEM43 isodose maps, temperature changes, thermal dose areas, and maximum ablation distances for four directional probes. This database serves as a valuable resource for future studies, aiding in complex trajectory planning and parameter optimization for NBTU procedures. Moreover, a novel probe selection method is proposed to enhance pre-surgical planning, providing a strategic approach to selecting probes that maximize therapeutic efficiency and minimize ablation time. By avoiding unnecessary thermal propagation and optimizing probe angles, this method has the potential to improve patient outcomes and streamline surgical procedures. Overall, the findings of this study contribute significantly to the field of NBTU, offering a robust framework for enhancing treatment precision and efficacy in clinical settings.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to assess the predictive value of abdominal fat characteristics measured by computed tomography (CT) in identifying early recurrence within one year post-initial transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) in patients with nonmuscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). A predictive model integrating fat features and clinical factors was developed to guide individualized treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 203 NMIBC patients from two medical centers was conducted. Abdominal CT images were analyzed using 3D Slicer software. Spearman correlation, logistic regression, and the Lasso algorithm were employed for data analysis. Predictive efficacy was assessed using the area under the curve (AUC) of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and decision curve analysis (DCA). Calibration was evaluated using the Hosmer-Lemeshow test. RESULTS: Significant differences in abdominal fat characteristics were found between the recurrence and nonrecurrence groups. All fat features positively correlated with body mass index (BMI), with bilateral perirenal fat thickness (PrFT) showing superior predictive performance. Multivariate logistic regression identified independent predictors of early recurrence, including tumor number, early perfusion chemotherapy, left and right PrFT, and visceral fat area (VFA) at umbilical and renal hilum levels. The Lasso-based model achieved an AUC of 0.904, outperforming existing models. CONCLUSION: Abdominal fat characteristics, especially bilateral PrFT, strongly correlate with early recurrence in NMIBC. The Lasso-based model, integrating fat and clinical factors, offers superior predictive efficacy and could improve individualized treatment strategies.

OBJECTIVE: Early childhood caries has become a globally crucial oral health problem over the decades. Most studies have discussed the association between low birth weight and early childhood caries; however, studies focusing on high birth weight have been relatively limited. This study aimed to assess the impact of high birth weight on the incidence and severity of dental caries in 4-5-year-old children. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Study subjects included 491 children from a birth cohort study at 4-5 years of age. Data on dental caries, prenatal and perinatal factors, and socio-demographic determinants were recorded. Logistic regression models adjusted for potential confounders were performed to analyze the data. Two-sided P-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Of the 491 children, the prevalence of dental caries was 48.7%. High birth weight (≥ 4,000 g) was significantly associated with increased incidence of dental caries (OR, 2.000; CI 95% 1.062-3.765), and the relatively enhanced risk OR was further increased in subjects experiencing caries (dmft ≥ 3) (OR, 2.437; CI 95% 1.306-4.549) compared with the normal birth weight (2,500-3,999 g). CONCLUSIONS: High birth weight is a risk factor for early childhood caries. Particular attention should be paid to children with birth weight more than or equal to 4,000 g.

Examining patterns of genetic diversity are crucial for conservation planning on endangered species, while inferring the underlying process of recent anthropogenic habitat modifications in the context potential long-term demographic changes remains challenging. The globally endangered scaly-sided merganser (SSME), Mergus squamatus, is endemic to a narrow range in Northeast Asia, and its population has recently been contracted into two main breeding areas. Although low genetic diversity has been suggested in the Russian population, the genetic status and demographic history of these individuals have not been fully elucidated. We therefore examined the genetic diversity and structure of the breeding populations of the SSME and investigated the relative importance of historical and recent demographic changes to the present-day pattern of genetic diversity. Using 10 nuclear microsatellite (SSR) markers and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region sequences, we found limited female-inherited genetic diversity and a high level of nuclear genetic diversity. In addition, analysis of both markers consistently revealed significant but weak divergence between the breeding populations. Inconsistent demographic history parameters calculated from mtDNA and bottleneck analysis results based on SSR suggested a stable historical effective population size. By applying approximate Bayesian computation, it was estimated that populations started to genetically diverge from each other due to recent fragmentation events caused by anthropogenic effects rather than isolation during Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and post-LGM recolonization. These results suggest that limited historical population size and shallow evolutionary history may be potential factors contributing to the contemporary genetic diversity pattern of breeding SSME populations. Conservation efforts should focus on protecting the current breeding habitats from further destruction, with priority given to both the Russian and Chinese population, as well as restoring the connected suitable breeding grounds.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of antibacterial peptides from Brevibacillus texasporus (BT) on the growth performance, meat quality and gut health of cultured largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). Largemouth bass (36.17 ± 1.52 g) were divided into 2 groups and each group was fed with diets supplemented with or without 200 ppm of BT peptides for 130 days. The results showed that BT peptides had no significant influences on growth performance and body indexes, but significantly enhanced total antioxidant capacity and lysozyme content in the serum. Moreover, digestive enzymes activities and intestinal villous height were also prominently increased. From meat quality aspect, no significant differences were found in nutritional components, amino acid composition, fatty acid composition and texture property, except the values of hardness, gumminess and γ-linolenic acid (C18:3n6) were remarkably increased after BT peptides intervention. Finally, the results of gut microbiota and short chain fatty acids revealed that BT peptides significantly decreased the relative abundances of harmful bacteria such as genus Acinetobacter and Pseudomonas, and increased the production of short chain fatty acids. In conclusion, this study confirmed that BT peptides could be used to improve the health of largemouth bass, which provided novel insights into the application of antimicrobial peptides in aquacultures.

Drought stress affects plant photosynthesis, leading to a reduction in the quality and yield of crop production. Non-foliar organs play a complementary role in photosynthesis during plant growth and development and are important sources of energy. However, there are limited studies on the performance of non-foliar organs under drought stress. The photosynthetic-responsive differences of oat spikelet organs (glumes, lemmas and paleas) and flag leaves to drought stress during the grain-filling stage were examined. Under drought stress, photosynthetic performance of glume is more stable. Intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), chlorophyll b, maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem II. (Fv/Fm), and electron transport rate (ETR) were significantly higher in the glume compared to the flag leaf. The transcriptome data revealed that stable expression of the RCCR gene under drought stress was the main reason for maintaining higher chlorophyll content in the glume. Additionally, no differential expression genes (DEGs) related to Photosystem Ⅰ (PSI) reaction centers were found, and drought stress primarily affects the Photosystem II (PSII) reaction center. In spikelets, the CP43 and CP47 subunits of PSII and the AtpB subunit of ATP synthase were increased on the thylakoid membrane, contributing to photosynthetic stabilisation of spikelets as a means of supplementing the limited photosynthesis of the leaves under drought stress. The results enhanced understanding of the photosynthetic performance of oat spikelet during the grain-filling stage, and also provided an important basis on improving the photosynthetic capacity of non-foliar organs for the selection and breeding new oat varieties with high yield and better drought resistance.

BACKGROUND: Maternal pertussis vaccination with Tdap vaccine is recommended to protect newborns from severe postnatal infection. HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU) infants have a higher incidence of pertussis infection and may particularly benefit from maternal immunization. The impact of HIV infection on the quality of IgG and memory B cell (MBC) responses to Tdap vaccination in pregnant women (PW) living with HIV (PWH) is unknown. METHODS: In this observational study, humoral immune responses to Tdap vaccination, including IgG levels, Fc-dependent effector functions, and MBC frequencies, were measured before and after vaccination in 40 PWH and 42 HIV-uninfected PW. Placental transfer of IgG and avidity were assessed in cord blood (CB). Soluble and cellular immune activation markers were quantified at baseline. FINDINGS: One month after vaccination, PWH had lower frequencies of MBC compared with HIV-uninfected PW. At delivery, PWH had attenuated pertussis-specific IgG levels and Fc-dependent effector functions. Reduced levels of maternal vaccine polyfunctional IgG and IgG avidity were transferred to HEU as compared to HIV-unexposed newborns. After adjustment with ethnicity, maternal antibody levels and gestational age at vaccination, HIV infection was independently associated with decreased levels of PT specific-IgG in CB. Both maternal and neonatal pertussis-specific IgG responses as well as PT-specific IgG avidity were inversely correlated with maternal sCD14 levels before vaccination among PWH. INTERPRETATION: Maternal HIV infection is associated with attenuated humoral immune responses to Tdap vaccination that correlate with sCD14. Suboptimal transfer of maternal immunity may further increase the risk of severe pertussis infection in HEU infants. Identifying the composition of a solution using acoustics remains a challenge. It is known that for low salt concentrations the speed of sound in water increases linearly with the concentration of the electrolyte, but the contribution of individual cations and anions is unknown. We introduce the concept of intrinsic sound speed Ai to quantify the contribution of ions to the speed of sound. We found that cations increase the speed of sound in water whereas anions decrease the speed of sound. Hydration layers around the ions play a major role. Because cations have a hydration layer thicker than that of anions, their contribution to the speed of sound is larger than that of anions. Experimental data on salts not used to determine the contribution of individual ions are in quantitative agreement with the predicted values. Our method can be applied to various systems containing small quantities of ions, molecules, or particles. With the knowledge that cations increase the speed of sound, we were able to explain previously unexplained data in the literature.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries in young children is a difficult global oral health problem. In the last decade, China has put a great deal of effort into reducing the prevalence of dental caries. This study, which is part of the China Population Chronic Disease and Nutrition Surveillance 2021, aimed to investigate the prevalence of dental caries among children aged 5 in Shanghai, China, and its associated factors. METHODS: A total of 1281 children aged 5 years from 6 districts in Shanghai were selected by a stratified sampling method. The survey consisted of an oral health questionnaire and an oral health examination. The questionnaire included questions on oral health knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours. The oral health examination used WHO standards. After screening, the data were input and analysed. Chi-square tests and logistic regression analyses were used to study the relevant factors affecting dental caries. RESULTS: The prevalence of dental caries among 1281 children was 51.0%, the dmft index score was 2.46, the Significant Caries Index (SiC) score was 6.39, and the SiC10 score was 10.35. Dental caries experience was related to the frequency of sweet drink consumption, the age of starting tooth brushing, eating habits after brushing, whether the children had received an oral examination provided by the government (p < 0.05), and the mother's education level but was not related to sex, the use of fluoride toothpaste, the frequency of brushing, whether the parents assisted brushing, or the frequency of flossing (p > 0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that the region of residence, eating after brushing and the age of starting brushing were associated with dental caries. CONCLUSIONS: Dental caries remained prevalent among 5-year-old children in Shanghai, China. Prevention strategies that target the associated factors including region of residence, eating after brushing, and the age of starting brushing should be considered.

As a common clinical disease, fracture is often accompanied by pain, swelling, bleeding as well as other symptoms and has a high disability rate, even threatening life, seriously endangering patients' physical and psychological health and quality of life. Medical practitioners take many strategies for the treatment of fracture healing, including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In the early stage of fracture healing, the local fracture is often in a state of hypoxia, accompanied by the expression of hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), which is beneficial to wound healing. Through literature mining, we thought that hypoxia, HIF-1α and downstream factors affected the mechanism of fracture healing, as well as dominated this process. Therefore, we reviewed the local characteristics and related signaling pathways involved in the fracture healing process and summarized the intervention of TCM on these mechanisms, in order to inspirit the new strategy for fracture healing, as well as elaborate on the possible principles of TCM in treating fractures based on the HIF molecular mechanism.

New anti-lung cancer therapies are urgently required to improve clinical outcomes. Since ganodermanontriol (GDNT) has been identified as a potential antineoplastic agent, its role in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is investigated in this study. Concretely, lung cancer cells were treated with GDNT and/or mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), after which MTT assay, flow cytometry and Western blot were conducted. Following bioinformatics analysis, carboxylesterase 2 (CES2) was knocked down and rescue assays were carried out in vitro. Xenograft experiment was performed on mice, followed by drug administration, measurement of tumor growth and determination of CES2, IMPDH1 and IMPDH2 expressions. As a result, the viability of lung cancer cells was reduced by GDNT or MMF. GDNT enhanced the effects of MMF on suppressing viability, promoting apoptosis and inducing cell cycle arrest in lung cancer cells. GDNT up-regulated CES2 level, and strengthened the effects of MMF on down-regulating IMPDH1 and IMPDH2 levels in the cells. IMPDH1 and IMPDH2 were highly expressed in LUAD samples. CES2 was a potential target for GDNT. CES2 knockdown reversed the synergistic effect of GDNT and MMF against lung cancer in vitro. GDNT potentiated the role of MMF in inhibiting tumor growth and expressions of CES2 and IMPDH1/2 in lung cancer in vivo. Collectively, GDNT suppresses the progression of LUAD by activating CES2 to enhance the metabolism of MMF.

OBJECTIVES: Reportedly, ganoderic acid A (GA-A) increases the sensitivity of hepatocellular carcinoma cells to cisplatin (DDP) chemotherapy. Therefore, this study aims to fathom the influence of GA-A on lung cancer cells. METHODS: After the construction of A549/DDP cells through exposure to DDP, the effects of GA-A on A549 and A549/DDP cells were revealed by cellular functional assays, western blot and quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR). The DDP-resistant lung cancer tumor was established in vivo, followed by further validation of the mechanism of GA-A. RESULTS: GA-A suppressed the viability, migration, and invasion while downregulating Beclin and autophagy marker LC3II/LC3I levels and upregulating P62 levels in A549 and A549/DDP cells. These effects were reversed by circFLNA overexpression. Also, GA-A reinforced the sensitivity of A549/DDP cells to DDP, elevated the apoptosis and regulated the circFLNA/miR-486-3p/cytochrome P450 family 1 subfamily A member 1 (CYP1A1)/X-ray repair cross-complementing 1 (XRCC1) axis. The reversal effects of circFLNA overexpression on GA-A-induced viability and apoptosis of A549/DDP cells could all be counteracted in the presence of 3MA. GA-A inhibited lung cancer tumor growth and blocked autophagy. CONCLUSION: GA-A suppresses autophagy by regulating the circFLNA/miR-486-3p/CYP1A1/XRCC1 axis to strengthen the sensitivity of lung cancer cells to DDP.

Dyslipidemia is characterized by elevated plasma levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triglycerides (TG), and TG-rich lipoprotein (TGRLs) in circulation, and is closely associated with the incidence and development of cardiovascular disease. Angiopoietin-like protein 3 (ANGPTL3) deficiency has been identified as a cause of familial combined hypolipidemia in humans, which allows it to be an important therapeutic target for reducing plasma lipids. Here, we report the discovery and characterization of a novel fully human antibody F1519-D95aA against N-terminal ANGPTL3 (NT-ANGPTL3), which potently inhibits NT-ANGPTL3 with a KD as low as 9.21 nM. In hyperlipidemic mice, F1519-D95aA shows higher apolipoprotein B (ApoB) and TG-lowering, and similar LDL-C reducing activity as compared to positive control Evinacumab (56.50% vs 26.01% decrease in serum ApoB levels, 30.84% vs 25.28% decrease in serum TG levels, 23.32% vs 22.52% decrease in serum LDLC levels, relative to vehicle group). Molecular docking and binding energy calculations reveal that the F1519-D95aA-ANGPTL3 complex (10 hydrogen bonds, -65.51 kcal/mol) is more stable than the Evinacumab-ANGPTL3 complex (4 hydrogen bonds, -63.76 kcal/mol). Importantly, F1519-D95aA binds to ANGPTL3 with different residues in ANGPTL3 from Evinacumab, suggesting that F1519-D95aA may be useful for the treatment of patients resistant to Evinacumab. In conclusion, F1519-D95aA is a novel fully human anti-NT-ANGPTL3 antibody with potent plasma ApoB, TG, and LDL-C lowering activities, which can potentially serve as a therapeutic agent for hyperlipidemia and relevant cardiovascular diseases.

Tumor recurrence and tissue regeneration are two major challenges in the postoperative treatment of cancer. Current research hotspots are focusing on developing novel scaffold materials that can simultaneously suppress tumor recurrence and promote tissue repair. Here, we propose a microfluidic 3D-printed methacrylate fish gelatin (F-GelMA@BBR) scaffold loaded with berberine (BBR) for the postoperative treatment of gastric cancer. The F-GelMA@BBR scaffold displayed a significant killing effect on gastric cancer MKN-45 cells in vitro and demonstrated excellent anti-recurrence efficiency in gastric cancer postoperative models. In vitro experiments have shown that F-GelMA@BBR exhibits significant cytotoxicity on gastric cancer cells while maintaining the cell viability of normal cells. The results of in vivo experiments show that F-GelMA@BBR can significantly suppress the tumor volume to 49.7 % of the control group. In addition, the scaffold has an ordered porous structure and good biocompatibility, which could support the attachment and proliferation of normal cells to promote tissue repair at the tumor resection site. These features indicated that such scaffold material is a promising candidate for postoperative tumor treatment in the practical application.

Salinity poses a significant threat to plant growth and development. The root microbiota plays a key role in plant adaptation to saline environments. Nevertheless, it remains poorly understood whether and how perennial grass plants accumulate specific root-derived bacteria when exposed to salinity. Here, we systematically analyzed the composition and variation of rhizosphere and endophytic bacteria, as well as root exudates in perennial ryegrass differing in salt tolerance grown in unsterilized soils with and without salt. Both salt-sensitive (P1) and salt-tolerant (P2) perennial ryegrass genotypes grew better in unsterilized soils compared to sterilized soils under salt stress. The rhizosphere and endophytic bacteria of both P1 and P2 had lower alpha-diversity under salt treatment compared to control. The reduction of alpha-diversity was more pronounced for P1 than for P2. The specific root-derived bacteria, particularly the genus Pseudomonas, were enriched in rhizosphere and endophytic bacteria under salt stress. Changes in bacterial functionality induced by salt stress differed in P1 and P2. Additionally, more root exudates were altered under salt stress in P2 than in P1. The content of important root exudates, mainly including phenylpropanoids, benzenoids, organic acids, had a significantly positive correlation with the abundance of rhizosphere and endophytic bacteria under salt stress. The results indicate that the interactions between root-derived bacteria and root exudates are crucial for the salt tolerance of perennial ryegrass, which provides a potential strategy to manipulate root microbiome for improved stress tolerance of perennial grass species.

PURPOSE: We aimed to establish a machine learning radiomics liver function model to explore how liver function affects the prognosis of patients with gastric cancer (GC). METHODS: Patients with advanced GC were retrospectively enrolled in this study. Eight machine learning radiomic models were constructed by extracting radiomic features from portal-vein-phase contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CE-CT) images. Clinicopathological features were determined using univariate and multifactorial Cox regression analyses. These features were used to construct a GC survival nomogram. RESULTS: A total of 510 patients with GC were split into training and test cohorts in an 8:2 ratio. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that patients with type I liver function had a better prognosis. Fifteen significant features were retained to establish the machine learning model. LightBGM showed the best predictive performance in the training (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve [AUC] 0.978) and test cohorts (AUC 0.714). Multivariate analysis revealed that gender, age, liver function, Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 (NRS-2002) score, tumor-lymph node-metastasis stage, tumor size, and tumor differentiation were independent risk factors for GC prognosis. The survival nomogram based on machine learning radiomics, instead of liver biochemical indicators, still had high accuracy (C-index of 0.771 vs. 0.773). CONCLUSION: The machine learning radiomics liver function model has high diagnostic value in predicting the influence of liver function on prognosis in patients with GC.

INTRODUCTION: The rising prevalence of knee osteoarthritis is placing a considerable strain on the global healthcare system. To address this issue, telemedicine-supported multicomponent exercise therapy has emerged as a promising approach. This therapy combines exercise, patient education, and health coaching to empower knee osteoarthritis patients to manage their condition from the comfort of their homes. Nevertheless, there are some existing limitations in the current research on this approach, including challenges related to patient compliance and the absence of objective evaluation methods. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Patients diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis, who have not undergone knee surgery in the past year, will be recruited for a randomized controlled trial. The trial will include an intervention group and a control group. The intervention group will receive an mHealth app-based multicomponent exercise therapy, consisting of exercise therapy, patient education, and health coaching. Meanwhile, the control group will receive usual care, involving drug therapy and patient education. The primary outcome of the trial will be the measurement of pain intensity, assessed using a visual analog scale at baseline and at 4, 8, and 12 weeks of the post-intervention. To analyze the data, a two-factor, four-level repeated measures ANOVA will be used if the assumptions of homogeneity of variance and sphericity are met. If not, a mixed effects model will be employed. DISCUSSION: The aim of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of multicomponent exercise therapy aimed at enhancing pain self-management for knee osteoarthritis patients in the comfort of their own homes. The intervention incorporate wearable devices equipped with advanced deep learning systems to monitor patients' adherence to the prescribed at-home exercise regimen, as well as to track changes in outcomes before and after the exercise sessions. The findings from this trial have the potential to enhance both the accessibility and quality of care provided to knee osteoarthritis patients, offering valuable insights for future improvements in their treatment and management. This paper describes a framework allowing intraoperative photoacoustic (PA) imaging integrated into minimally invasive surgical systems. PA is an emerging imaging modality that combines the high penetration of ultrasound (US) imaging with high optical contrast. With PA imaging, a surgical robot can provide intraoperative neurovascular guidance to the operating physician, alerting them of the presence of vital substrate anatomy invisible to the naked eye, preventing complications such as hemorrhage and paralysis. Our proposed framework is designed to work with the da Vinci surgical system: real-time PA images produced by the framework are superimposed on the endoscopic video feed with an augmented reality overlay, thus enabling intuitive three-dimensional localization of critical anatomy. To evaluate the accuracy of the proposed framework, we first conducted experimental studies in a phantom with known geometry, which revealed a volumetric reconstruction error of 1.20 ± 0.71 mm. We also conducted an ex vivo study by embedding blood-filled tubes into chicken breast, demonstrating the successful real-time PA-augmented vessel visualization onto the endoscopic view. These results suggest that the proposed framework could provide anatomical and functional feedback to surgeons and it has the potential to be incorporated into robot-assisted minimally invasive surgical procedures.

Germination of aged seeds may be associated with specific metabolic changes. The objective of this study was to examine physiological and metabolic alterations before and after germination of control and aged oat (Avena sativa) seeds. The activity of antioxidant enzymes and the level of storage compounds were measured in the embryo and endosperm at 0, 4, 16, and 32 h of imbibition for control seeds and 0, 4, 16, 32, and 60 h of imbibition for medium vigor seeds after artificially accelerated aging; metabolomic changes were determined in embryos at 16 and 32 h of seed imbibition. In aged oat seeds, superoxide dismutase activity and catalase activity increased in the late imbibition stage. The content of soluble sugars decreased significantly in the later stages of imbibition, while the content of proteins increased in 32 h of seed imbibition eventually producing mannitol and proline. The mobilization of fat in deteriorated seeds was mainly through the sphingolipid metabolic pathway generated by cell growth-promoting dihydrosphingosine-1-phosphate. Ascorbic acid, avenanthramide and proline levels increased significantly at 60 h of imbibition, playing an important role in the germination of aged oat seeds.
