RESUMEN

The combining of chemically assisted clarification with a proprietary physical separation technology has led to a high rate process for clarifying flocculated sewage and other waste streams. This hybrid physico-chemical system, known as the CDS Fine Solids Separation (FSS) System, was developed over a two year period within a sewage treatment plant environment. This paper summarises the results of a recent field trial of the system with a Victorian water authority which experiences heavy loading of sewers in a coastal town during holiday periods. The trial sought to evaluate the FSS as a tool for smoothing the load on the 11 km long sewer to the sewage treatment plant (STP). The FSS system could possibly enable the costly augmentation of the sewer to be deferred, particularly as the capacity of the existing sewer pipe is satisfactory for most of the year. Water quality parameters were determined for a range of flowrates and operational conditions over a two month period. Large reductions were achieved in TSS, TP, FC, turbidity and BOD5, with only minimal reductions in NH3 and TON. These results showed that the FSS could meet the authority's objectives for load levelling and would provide a 20-25% increase in effective sewer capacity. The data are also discussed in terms of possible use of the effluent from the FSS for water reuse applications.

Estrogen deficiency following ovariectomy or menopause results in bone loss. Although evidence strongly suggests that the immune system is involved in the pathogenesis of estrogen-deficient osteoporosis, it is not clear what role, if any, the T-lymphocyte plays in this process. Therefore, we examined the distribution of T-cell subsets in lymphoid organs and tissues, under varying estrogenic states in the rat. Six-month-old female Sprague-Dawley rats, ovariectomized (Ovx) and sham-operated, were randomized 5 d post-surgery into six groups to receive the following treatments: (A) sham/placebo; (B) sham/low-dose E2; (C) sham/high-dose E2; (D) Ovx/placebo; (E) Ovx/low-dose E2; (F) Ovx/high-dose E2. Half of the treated rats (groups A-F) were sacrificed on d 14; the remainder on d 28. Following euthanasia, mononuclear cells were isolated from the thymus, peripheral blood, spleen, lymph node and bone marrow, and were labeled for flow cytometric analysis using mouse anti-rat monoclonal antibodies directed against CD5, CD4, and CD8 antigenic markers. In the thymus, ovariectomy caused a dramatic increase and E2 treatment caused a dose-dependent decrease in weight that was proportional to the number of thymocytes. In the bone marrow, ovariectomy caused a significant reduction in the percentage of all T-cell subsets examined and this effect persisted throughout the duration of the study. Estrogen replacement therapy at the low-dose reversed the effects of ovariectomy and high-dose E2 treatment caused an increase in T-cell subsets in both the sham and Ovx groups, an effect that was more pronounced at d 14 compared with d 28. Although the percentages of some T-cell subsets in the other lymphoid organs/tissues were altered by ovariectomy or E2 treatment at d 0 and 14, all these changes had normalized by d 28 except for CD5 and CD4 cells in peripheral blood. In summary, with the exception of T-lymphocytes in the bone marrow, the effects of varying estrogenic states on T-cells were variable and transient. The influence of estrogen status on bone marrow T-lymphocytes suggests that these cells may play a role in mediating the effects of estrogen on bone turnover and warrant additional studies focusing on the functional role of T-cells in the bone marrow compartment.

CLOUDY taenite appears as a dark-etching rim that occurs at the high nickel border of taenite fields in iron meteorites and mesosiderites. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows it to consist of a foam-like association of interpenetrating single crystals of taenite and kamacite when well developed(1) with an orientation relationship between those of the Kurdjumow-Sachs and the Nishiyama(2). It occurs between compositional limits that have been reported as approximately 25-40% Ni(1) and 30-40% Ni(3). Observed taenite particle sizes range from 0.4 microm in the Estherville mesosiderite(1) to considerably less than 0.1 microm for many iron meteorites (unpublished data). The mechanism of cloudy taenite formation has not been previously explained, although it is believed(2) to be a phenomenon related to the Invar effect, which occurs in Fe-35% Ni (Invar) and several other alloy systems. Santa Catharina is a wholly taenitic anomalous iron meteorite that contains 35% Ni and 0.6% Co (ref. 4). This composition, which is very similar to that of Invar, places it well inside the range where cloudy taenite is known to form. The optical microstructure of Santa Catharina suggested that the matrix phase of the entire meteorite may consist of cloudy taenite, so I have now examined it by TEM and the results are reported here.
