RESUMEN

Although the natural niche for H. pylori (Hp) is the human stomach, for widespread infection to occur this microorganism may need to survive in the external environment. Molecular techniques such as polymerase (PCR) have revealed the presence of Hp DNA in water, indicating that this environment could act as a reservoir for this bacterium. The aim of this study was to analyse the occurrence of Hp in tap water from Cracow and to examine the relationship between 26 parameters and the presence of Hp DNA due to the lack of such information related to this issue in Poland. Additional aim of this study was to determine whether the correlation between Hp DNA detection and seasonal changes of water quality in 379 water samples collected from various water treatment plants (WTPs), could be found. Water samples were subjected to PCR for glmM and cagA genes. Ionic and organic composition of microelements were determined in accordance to Polish and ISO standards. The data obtained from tests show that 212 (55.96%) objects were Hp DNA (glmM) positive and among them 145 (68.40%) waters samples revealed expression of cagA. Linear Discriminant Analysis and Principal Component Analysis were used and provided that the selected variables (p < 0.05): colour, pH, conductivity at 25°C, chlorides, nitrites, nitrates, phosphates, chlorates, chlorites, sulphates, free chlorine, sodium, magnesium, potassium, calcium, organic carbon, trichloromethane, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloroethane, total iron, ammonium ion, and Æ©TMHs distinguished the water samples that contain Hp DNA and do not contain Hp DNA. We conclude that the ionic and organic composition of microelements in water might influence the presence of Hp. Thus, determination of the selected microelements may indirectly indicate or sometimes predict the presence of Hp in drinking water.

RESUMEN

The possible effects of disruptions in the geomagnetic field caused by different man-made constructions have been increasing considerably in recent years. These include, among others, the development of wind farms located in the sea and increased numbers of underwater cables. The objective of this study was to determine whether a magnetic field (MF) of 10 mT or a 50 Hz electromagnetic field (EMF) of 1 mT affected the developmental instability of the inner ear organ, which is responsible in fish for hearing and balance, in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) reared in a laboratory for 37 days (13 days in egg stage and 24 days in larval stage). This was done by analyzing the fluctuating asymmetry (FA) of otolith size. The MF and EMF values applied in this study are those recorded in the vicinities of underwater alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) cables, respectively. The influence of MF on otolith FA was found to be statistically significant, with the highest significance occurring in the group of youngest larvae of 5 dph (compared to larvae 15 and 23 dph). Otolith FA was also higher in larvae exposed to the EMF compared to control conditions, but the differences were not statistically significant. Thus, we can conclude that underwater constructions and cables which emit a MF of 10 mT or higher can affect living organisms that are within a distance of a few meters, especially those (as in the case of trout) in settled life stages.

RESUMEN

Conventional metal wires suffer from a significant degradation or complete failure in their electrical performance, when subjected to harsh oxidizing environments, however wires constructed from Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) have been found to actually improve in their electrical performance when subjected to these environments. These opposing reactions may provide new and interesting applications for CNT wires. Yet, before attempting to move to any real-world harsh environment applications, for the CNT wires, it is essential that this area of their operation be thoroughly examined. To investigate this, CNT wires were treated with multiple combinations of the strongest acids and halogens. The wires were then subjected to conductivity measurements, current carrying capacity tests, as well as Raman, microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis to enable the identification of both the limits of oxidative conductivity boosting and the onset of physical damage to the wires. These experiments have led to two main conclusions. Firstly, that CNT wires may operate effectively in harsh oxidizing environments where metal wires would easily fail and secondly, that the highest conductivity increase of the CNT wires can be achieved through a process of annealing, acetone and HCl purification followed by either H2O2 and HClO4 or Br2 treatment.

RESUMEN

Field trials of a series of monounsaturated straight-chain acetates, including the (Z)-5-tetradecenyl acetate, (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (pheromone blend A) and (Z)-5-decenyl acetate, (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate, (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (pheromone blend B), attracted the following species from the title family: Agrotis exclamationis (Linnaeus) and Agrotis segetum (Denis & Schiffermüller), respectively. Cutworms were monitored in the 2016-2017 season with the use of white Delta-type traps and different pheromone dispensers that contained above blends. The identified pheromone components at blend A elicited maximum trap captures when combined in a Z5-14:Ac/Z9-14:Ac-mixture ratio 100:16 at dose of 350 µg. The attractiveness of dispensers with pheromone blend B combined in a Z5-10:Ac/Z7-12:Ac/Z9-14:Ac-mixture ratio 1:1:1 at dose of 200 µg was the highest. Most kinds of the dispensers tested were similar or more active to the standard lures of the Csalomon company. Pheromone component of the A. exclamationis, (Z)-5-tetradecenyl acetate, was synthesized with a new, simple, and very efficient method in high summary yield and excellent isomeric purity.

RESUMEN

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of commonly used treatment regimens such as metformin (MET) or an oral contraceptive pill (OC) containing ethynyloestradiol and cyproterone acetate (EE-CPA) on surrogate serum CVD risk factors and markers of endothelial dysfunction (CRP, IL-6, sVCAM) in women with PCOS.This study was conducted in a crossover design in order to compare the effects of 2 different treatment regimens in the same subject and has been registered under the number NCT01798875 in the ClinicalTrials.gov registry.42 women with PCOS (age range 18-36 years, median BMI 24.9) were randomly assigned to treatment with MET (850 mg bid) or EE-CPA containing OC for 4 months. After 2 months washout period, treatments were crossed over.Treatment with and OC increased significantly serum CRP concentrations (from 0.77 mg/l [95% CI: 0.70; 2.18] to 1.70 mg/l [95% CI: 1.65; 3.69], P<0.001). Treatment with MET slightly reduced serum CRP levels, but this difference did not reach statistical significance (P=0.08). 4 months treatment with MET or EE-CPA had no effect on serum IL-6 and sVCAM-1 concentrations (P>0.05).Treatment with EE-CPA containing OC for 4 months in women with PCOS significantly raises serum CRP. Since this rise was not accompanied by the increase in serum concentrations of IL-6, which is the most potent and effective stimulant of hepatic CRP production, we can speculate that this effect is caused by the liver first-pass effect of oral oestrogen administration. If this in turn can confer, cardiovascular risk among these women warrants further -studies.

RESUMEN

The registry of donors typed for HPA-1 and HPA-3 antigens is presented. Three cases of fetal/neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (F/NAIT) transfused with typed platelets either from mother or from registered donors are discussed. All children were transfused just after delivery, one in addition in utero: they survived not having any haemorrhagic complications in central nervous system inspite of such complications in previous born siblings. In the paper the general rules of platelet transfusions in F/NAIT are discussed.

RESUMEN

In the years 1976-1980, the province of Bydgoszcz had a total of 2635 registered epileptics, or 0.37% of the entire population, over the age of 16. From these, 200 patients were randomly selected, and between 1983 and 1985 a complats clinical follow-up investigation was carried out. Among the most frequent mental disorders found were postparoxysmal twilight state (19.5%) and affective psychoses (11%), among the chronic disorders, dementia of varying intensity (26.5%). In contrast with previous investigations the present investigation made it possible to determine with precision the cause of epileptic attacks. The ratio was 61% to 31%.

RESUMEN

Trunk and limb muscles from fetal and newborn rabbits were investigated by means of light and electron microscopes. At 14 days gestation, the presumptive myoblasts migrate away from the myotome to form the anlage of the muscle of the trunk and limb. Among the population of undifferentiated cells, the myoblasts were recognized due to the presence of actin and myosin filaments. The aggregates of thin and thick filaments appear at the periphery of the cells. There is a great variety of filament assembly. The presence of Z band material appears to be essential for sarcomere formation. At 14 days of gestation the myotubes are more numerous in the limb than in the trunk. The presence of unmaturated fibrils with absence of the M line in the sarcomeres was observed. By day 18 of gestation the myotubes are wider and aggregate to form small bundles. The myofibrils were more numerous and the vesicles of the SR precursor, partly incrustated with ribosomes were dispersed among them. At day 22 of gestation the myotubes are thicker because of the myofibrils which are far more numberous. The sarcomeres were more fully developed, with the M line present. At day 28 of gestation and 3 days after delivery the already developed myofibers were present with a well organized SR system and fully developed sarcomeres.

RESUMEN

In two cases of hepatic coma following advanced liver cirrhosis exchange transfusions were applied with plasmapheresis. In both cases the general condition of patients improved and consciousness returned. After exchange transfusions with plasmapheresis the serum levels of bilirubin, urea and ammonia decreased. Using appropriately selected fluids for erythrocyte suspension it is possible to affect selectively protein depletion and depletion of plasma blood clotting factors.
