RESUMEN

Objectives: Following the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, adolescents have experienced decreased physical activity and a decline in mental health. This study analyzed the association between changes in depressed mood after the COVID-19 pandemic and physical activity among adolescents. Methods: The analysis was based on the results of the 17th Youth Health Behavior Online Survey conducted in 2021, which included 54848 middle and high school students in South Korea. Information on physical activity included low-intensity physical activity lasting >60 min/day, high-intensity physical activity, and strength training exercises. A logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the association between physical activity and changes in depression after the COVID-19 pandemic. Results: After adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics and previous depression, adolescents who performed strength training exercises more than once per week had a 0.95-fold lower risk (odds ratio [OR]=0.948, 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.905-0.994, p= 0.027) of increasing depression after the COVID-19 pandemic, while the risk of decreasing depression increased by 1.22-fold (OR=1.215, 95% CI=1.131-1.305, p<0.001). The results were not significant for low-intensity physical activity for >60 min/day and high-intensity physical activity. Conclusion: Strength-training exercises are significantly associated with the prevention of depression among adolescents following the COVID-19 pandemic.

RESUMEN

This study examined consumers' change in perception related to food delivery using big data before and after the COVID-19 crisis. This study identified words closely associated with the keyword "food delivery" based on big data from social media and investigated consumers' perceptions of and needs for food delivery and related issues before and after COVID-19. Results were derived through analysis methods such as text mining analysis, Concor analysis, and sentiment analysis. The research findings can be summarized as follows: In 2019, frequently appearing dining-related words were "dining-out," "delivery," "famous restaurant," "delivery food," "foundation," "dish," "family order," and "delicious." In 2021, these words were "delivery," "delivery food," "famous restaurant," "foundation," "COVID-19," "dish," "order," "application," and "family." The analysis results for the food delivery sentimental network based on 2019 data revealed discourses revolving around delicious, delivery food, lunch box, and Korean food. For the 2021 data, discourses revolved around delivery food, recommend, and delicious. The emotional analysis, which extracted positive and negative words from the "food delivery" search word data, demonstrated that the number of positive keywords decreased by 2.85%, while negative keywords increased at the same rate. In addition, compared to the pre-COVID-19 pandemic era, a weakening trend in positive emotions and an increasing trend in negative emotions were detected after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic; sub-emotions under the positive category (e.g., good feelings, joy, interest) decreased in 2021 compared to 2019, whereas sub-emotions under the negative category (e.g., sadness, fear, pain) increased.

RESUMEN

A global pandemic has significantly impacted the ability to conduct diagnostic evaluations for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In the wake of the coronavirus, autism centers and providers quickly needed to implement innovative diagnostic processes to adapt in order to continue serve patient needs while minimizing the spread of the virus. The International Collaborative for Diagnostic Evaluation of Autism (IDEA) is a grassroots organization that came together to discuss standards of care during the pandemic and to provide a forum wherein providers communicated decisions. This white paper is intended to provide examples of how different centers adjusted their standard approaches to conduct diagnostic evaluations for ASD during the pandemic and to provide insight to other centers as they go through similar challenges.

RESUMEN

Conductive fibers are essential building blocks for implementing various functionalities in a textile platform that is highly conformable to mechanical deformation. In this study, two major techniques were developed to fabricate silver-deposited conductive fibers. First, a droplet-coating method was adopted to coat a nylon fiber with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and silver nanowires (AgNWs). While conventional dip coating uses a large ink pool and thus wastes coating materials, droplet-coating uses minimal quantities of silver ink by translating a small ink droplet along the nylon fiber. Secondly, the silver-deposited fiber was annealed by similarly translating a tubular heater along the fiber to induce sintering of the AgNPs and AgNWs. This heat-scanning motion avoids excessive heating and subsequent thermal damage to the nylon fiber. The effects of heat-scanning time and heater power on the fiber conductance were systematically investigated. A conductive fiber with a resistance as low as ~2.8 Ω/cm (0.25 Ω/sq) can be produced. Finally, it was demonstrated that the conductive fibers can be applied in force sensors and flexible interconnectors.

RESUMEN

The design or dimension of micro-supercapacitor electrodes is an important factor that determines their performance. In this study, a microsupercapacitor was precisely fabricated on a silicon substrate by irradiating an imprinted furan micropattern with a CO2 laser beam under ambient conditions. Since furan is a carbon-abundant polymer, electrically conductive and porous carbon structures were produced by laser-induced pyrolysis. While the pyrolysis of a furan film in a general electric furnace resulted in severe cracks and delamination, the laser pyrolysis method proposed herein yielded porous carbon films without cracks or delamination. Moreover, as the imprinting process already designated the furan area for laser pyrolysis, high-precision patterning was achieved in the subsequent laser pyrolysis step. This two-step process exploited the superior resolution of imprinting for the fabrication of a laser-pyrolyzed carbon micropattern. As a result, the technical limitations of conventional laser direct writing could be overcome. The laser-pyrolyzed carbon structure was employed for microsupercapacitor electrodes. The microsupercapacitor showed a specific capacitance of 0.92 mF/cm2 at 1 mA/cm2 with a PVA-H2SO4 gel electrolyte, and retained an up to 88% capacitance after 10,000 charging/discharging cycles.

RESUMEN

Thermal management problems in high-power flexible electronics are exacerbated by the design complexity and requirement of stringent temperature control to prevent skin burns. Thus, effective heat dissipation methods applicable to flexible electronics on polymer substrates are an essential device design component. Accordingly, this study investigates the pool boiling heat transfer characteristics and potential enhancements, enabled by laser-induced graphene (LIG), which is both highly porous and bendable. Patterned LIG with a mesh spacing of 200 µm was formed on flexible polyimide substrates by laser direct writing, and the resulting surfaces exhibited enhanced heat transfer characteristics. Pool boiling experiments were conducted with an FC-72 working fluid to investigate the heat removal capability of LIG, and its performance was further improved by separating the liquid supply passages from the vapor escape routes. Overall, the inclusion of LIG resulted in a 2- to 3-fold increase in both the critical heat flux (33.6 W/cm2) and heat transfer coefficient (7.6 kW/(m2·K)), compared to pristine polyimide films.

RESUMEN

The current study examines the relationship between premature birth and the age at which caregivers first become concerned with their child's development in a sample of 84 toddlers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The participants were split into two groups: those born prematurely and those born full term. The results indicate that the age of caregiver first concern is significantly younger for those born prematurely than those born full term. The average age caregivers reported first becoming concerned about their child's development was around 7 months for participants born prematurely and around 13 months for participants born full term. Possible explanations for the results and their implications are discussed.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate differences in comorbid psychopathology rates between individuals who meet criteria of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) according to DSM-5 or the DSM-IV-TR. METHODS: Comorbid psychopathology was measured using the Autism Spectrum Disorders- Comorbid for Children. 424 individuals between the ages of 2 and 18 years of age; including children who met criteria for an ASD according to the DSM-5, the DSM-IV-TR only, and a control group that did not meet either set of criteria. RESULTS: Of the ASD participants, 36% would no longer meet criteria according to proposed DSM-5. Comorbidity rates for the ASD groups were significantly different from the control group; however, ASD groups were not significantly different in terms of total comorbid psychopathology. CONCLUSION: The results elucidate the need for further research regarding services and treatments for those individuals that will no longer meet criteria for an ASD but still have significant rates of comorbid psychopathology.

RESUMEN

Aggression is one of the most frequent and debilitating problems observed among persons with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). It is common and can be more problematic than many core symptoms of ASD. Thus, treating the behavior is a high priority. A surprisingly limited number of studies have addressed treatment when taken in the context of the vast ASD literature. This paper reviews many of these papers and describes the types of interventions that have been used and the characteristics of the people who have been studied.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the severity of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) symptomology and scores on the Battelle Developmental Inventory, Second Edition (BDI-2) in toddlers (n = 325). METHODS: Total scores on the BDI-2 and individual domain scores were examined to explore the relationship between severity of ASD and developmental quotient, impairment in personal-social skills, adaptive functioning, cognition, and communication. RESULTS: Regression analyses controlled for the impact of age and IQ on results, indicating that higher autism severity scores were associated with overall greater impairment and in the total scores and the individual domains of the BDI-2. The domains were found to be differentially affected by severity of ASD. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest severity of ASD may influence symptom presentation. Clinical implications of study findings are discussed.

RESUMEN

The present study was conducted to compare rates of tantrum behaviors in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) (n=255), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (n=40) and children with comorbid ASD and ADHD (n=47). Parents/guardians of children aged 3-16 years were surveyed about their children's behaviors using the Autism Spectrum Disorders-Comorbidity for Children (ASD-C-C). Children with ADHD alone differed from children with ASD alone and children with comorbid ASD and ADHD on rates of tantrum behaviors. Examination of individual tantrum behavior items indicated that children with comorbid ASD and ADHD have a more similar symptom presentation to children with ASD than children with ADHD. This study adds to the literature on the presentation of common co-occurring behaviors of ASD when there is comorbid ADHD. The implications of these findings may aid in the assessment and treatment of tantrum behaviors in children with comorbid ASD and ADHD.

RESUMEN

The current diagnostic criteria do not allow co-diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). As a result, there has been little research on how these two disorders co-occur in the ASD population. The current study aimed to extend the literature in this area by examining comorbid rates in three different diagnostic groups (ASD, ADHD, and comorbid ASD+ADHD) using the Autism Spectrum Disorders-Comorbidity for Children (ASD-CC). Children with comorbid ASD and ADHD evinced higher rates of comorbid symptoms than children with ASD or ADHD alone. Additionally, children with comorbid ASD and ADHD endorsed more severe comorbid symptoms. Implications regarding these findings are discussed.

RESUMEN

Identifying the function of behavior is crucial in formulating functionally-based treatment programs for people with challenging behaviors. The Questions About Behavior Function (QABF) is a well-established instrument with sound psychometric properties. The present study describes the development process for a Korean version of the QABF. The factor structure was examined in a sample of 153 QABF-K assessments, which yielded a five-factor-solution identical to the original English version. In terms of reliability, internal consistency was good with Chronbach's alpha ranging from 0.80 to 0.87 and test-retest reliability was found to be good with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.73 to 0.91. Based upon the present results, the QABF-K appears to be a promising tool for use with informants whose primary language is Korean.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the current study is to investigate challenging behavior in children who may no longer meet criteria for an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis according to the proposed fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5). METHOD: Children and adolescents (n = 459) were separated into three groups including those who met criteria for ASD according to the DSM-5 criteria (n = 219); those who will no longer qualify for an ASD diagnosis according to the DSM-5 but met criteria according to the DSM-IV-TR (n = 109); and a control group (n = 131). Scores on the Autism Spectrum Disorders - Problem Behaviors for Children (ASD-PB-C) were compared among groups. RESULTS: The DSM-5 captured a slightly more impaired population in terms of problem behavior. CONCLUSION: Implications regarding access to treatment for those no longer meeting criteria need to be taken into consideration in the coming months.
