RESUMEN

The results of day-case lateral release for resistant tennis elbow were evaluated in 20 patients after an average follow-up of 16 months. Using the outcome criteria of Verhaar et al. [4] an excellent result was obtained in 55%, a good result in 35% and a fair result in 10%, with all patients benefiting from surgery. We believe surgery should be offered at an earlier stage in the treatment of tennis elbow, with the simple and effective nature of the operation providing little justification for persisting with conservative treatment. With hindsight, three-quarters of our patients would have preferred earlier surgical referral.

RESUMEN

We compared the chevron and the Wilson metatarsal osteotomy for hallux valgus in a prospective randomised trial on 87 feet in 51 patients, reviewed at averages of 5.5 and 38 months after operation. The patients in the chevron group returned to work earlier and mobilised faster, but, at the later review, those in the Wilson group had better functional results and were more satisfied with the appearance of the foot. Correction of the hallux valgus angle was better maintained in patients in the Wilson group and they had a better range of motion at the metatarsophalangeal joint; fewer complained of metatarsalgia.

RESUMEN

A prospective study was performed to assess the effectiveness of the API 20E in the identification of 183 Yersinia isolates incubated at 28 degrees C for 18 to 24 h. The results showed an overall correct-identification rate of 90%, with positive predictive values for Yersinia enterocolitica and Yersinia frederiksenii of 94 and 92%, respectively. Yersinia intermedia results were unacceptable.

RESUMEN

Twenty-nine confirmed cases of Salmonella nima enterocolitis in Canada and four cases in the United States were traced to gold-foil wrapped chocolate coins from Belgium. Illness in Canadian cases occurred between September 1985 and October 1986 where the primary case in each of 24 affected families was a child ≤ 14 years of age. A product recall was issued on October 3, 1986 in Canada. Quantitative analysis of four composite samples of suspect chocolate by the most probable number (MPN) technique showed levels of 4.3 to 24.0 S. nima per 100 g product. These levels of contamination and consumption of approximately 25 g of chocolate by primary cases suggest that small numbers of S. nima precipitated clinical symptoms.
