RESUMEN

Cyclooctane is classified as a cycloalkane, characterized by the chemical formula C 8 H 16. It consists of a closed ring structure composed of eight carbon atoms and sixteen hydrogen atoms. A cyclooctane chain typically refers to a series of cyclooctane molecules linked together. Cyclooctane and its derivatives find various applications in chemistry, materials science, and industry. Topological indices are numerical values associated with the molecular graph of a chemical compound, predicting certain physical or chemical properties. In this study, we calculated the expected values of degree-based and neighborhood degree-based topological descriptors for random cyclooctane chains. A comparison of these topological indices' expected values is presented at the end.

The exploitation of multicomponent composites (MCCs) has become the main pathway for obtaining advanced microwave absorption materials (MAMs). Herein, a metal valence state modulation strategy is proposed to tune the electromagnetic (EM) parameters and improve microwave absorption performances. Core@shell hollow carbon microspheres@MoSe2 and hollow carbon microspheres@MoSe2/MoOx MCCs with various mixed-valence states content are well-designed and produced by a simple hydrothermal reaction or/and heat treatment process. The results reveal that the thermal treatment of hollow carbon microspheres@MoSe2 in Ar and Ar/H2 leads to the in situ formation of MoOx and multivalence state, respectively, and the enhanced content of Mo4+ in the designed MCCs greatly boosts their impedance matching characteristics, polarization, and conduction loss capacities, which lead to their evidently improved EM wave absorption properties. Amongst, the as-prepared hollow carbon microspheres@MoSe2/MoOx MCCs achieve an effective absorption bandwidth of 5.80 GHz under a matching thickness of 1.97 mm and minimum reflection loss of -21.49 dB. Therefore, this work offers a simple and universal method to fabricate core@shell hollow carbon microspheres@MoSe2/MoOx MCCs, and a novel and feasible metal valence state modulation strategy is proposed to develop high-efficiency MAMs.

Isotactic polythioesters (PTEs) that are thioester analogs to natural polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) have attracted growing attention due to their distinct properties. However, the development of chemically synthetic methods for preparing isotactic PTEs has long been an intricate endeavour. Herein, we report the successful synthesis of perfectly isotactic PTEs via stereocontrolled ring-opening polymerization. This binaphthalene-salen aluminium (SalBinam-Al) catalyst promoted a robust polymerization of rac-α-substituted-ß-propiothiolactones (rac-BTL and rac-PTL) with highly kinetic resolution, affording perfectly isotactic P(BTL) and P(PTL) with Mn up to 276 kDa. Impressively, the isotactic P(BTL) formed a supramolecular stereocomplex with improved thermal property (Tm=204 °C). Ultimately, this kinetic resolution polymerization enabled the facile isolation of enantiopure (S)-BTL, which could efficiently convert to an important pharmaceutical building block (S)-2-benzyl-3-mercapto-propanoic acid. Isotactic P(PTL) served as a tough and ductile material comparable to the commercialized polyolefins. This synthetic system allowed to access of isotactic PTEs, establishing a powerful platform for the discovery of sustainable plastics.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are a global environmental concern, causing significant economic losses in fisheries and posing risks to human health. Algicidal bacteria have been suggested as a potential solution to control HABs, but their algicidal efficacy is influenced by various factors. This study aimed to characterize a novel algicidal bacterium, Maribacter dokdonensis (P4), isolated from a Karenia mikimotoi (Hong Kong strain, KMHK) HAB and assess the impact of P4 and KMHK's doses, growth phase, and algicidal mode and the axenicity of KMHK on P4's algicidal effect. Our results demonstrated that the algicidal effect of P4 was dose-dependent, with the highest efficacy at a dose of 25% v/v. The study also determined that P4's algicidal effect was indirect, with the P4 culture and the supernatant, but not the bacterial cells, showing significant effects. The algicidal efficacy was higher when both P4 and KMHK were in the stationary phase. Furthermore, the P4 culture at the log phase could effectively kill KMHK cells at the stationary phase, with higher algicidal efficacy in the bacterial culture than that of the supernatant alone. Interestingly, P4's algicidal efficacy was significantly higher when co-culturing with xenic KMHK (~90% efficacy at day 1) than that with the axenic KMHK (~50% efficacy at day 1), suggesting the presence of other bacteria could regulate P4's algicidal effect. The bacterial strain P4 also exhibited remarkable algicidal efficacy on four other dinoflagellate species, particularly the armored species. These results provide valuable insights into the algicidal effect of M. dokdonensis on K. mikimotoi and on their interactions.

BACKGROUND: To identify reliable magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features that can differentiate confluent fibrosis (CF) from infiltrative hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on Twenty CF patients and 28 infiltrative HCC patients who underwent upper abdomen MRI scans. The imaging features of lesions were analyzed, and the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) of lesions were measured. Accuracy, sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of CF were calculated for each category individually and combined. RESULTS: Compared to infiltrative HCC, hepatic capsular retraction at the site of lesion, hepatic volume loss at the site of lesion and "nodular surround sign" were more common in patients with CF (all P < 0.001). Hepatic volume loss at the site of lesion, no or mild enhancement in arterial phase, and hyper-enhancing in delayed phase to the background parenchyma showed superior diagnostic accuracy (83.3%, 85.4%, 97.9%, respectively). When the lesion exhibited hepatic volume loss at the site of lesion or no or mild enhancement in arterial phase or hyper-enhancing in delayed phase, a sensitivity of 100.0% for the diagnosis of CF was achieved. When the lesion was positive for any two of three categories, or positive for all three categories, a specificity of 100.0% was achieved. The ADC values of CF were higher than those of infiltrative HCC (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The combination of the hepatic volume loss at the site of lesion, no or mild enhancement in arterial phase, and hyper-enhancing in delayed phase to the background parenchyma can be considered reliable MR features for the diagnosis of CF, as they allow differentiation from infiltrative HCC.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Acute variceal bleeding (AVB) is a major complication in patients with cirrhosis. Using a nationwide AVB audit, we performed a nested cohort study to determine whether full adherence to the AVB quality indicator (QI) improves clinical outcomes in patients with cirrhosis and AVB. APPROACH AND RESULTS: We assessed real-world adherence to AVB QI among patients with cirrhosis admitted for AVB in all public hospitals in Singapore between January 2015 and December 2020. Full adherence was considered when all 5 QIs were fulfilled: prophylactic antibiotics, vasoactive agents, timely endoscopy, endoscopic hemostasis during index endoscopy, and nonselective beta-blockers after AVB. We compare 6-week mortality between the full adherence and suboptimal adherence groups using a propensity-matched cohort.A total of 989 patients with AVB were included. Full adherence to all AVB QI was suboptimal (56.5%). Analysis of the propensity-matched cohort with comparable baseline characteristics showed that full adherence was associated with a lower risk of early infection (20.0% vs. 26.9%), early rebleeding (5.2% vs. 10.2%), and mortality at 6 weeks (8.2% vs. 19.7%) and 1 year (21.3% vs. 35.4%) ( p <0.05 for all). While full adherence was associated with a lower 6-week mortality regardless of the MELD score, nonadherence was associated with a higher 6-week mortality despite a lower predicted risk of 6-week mortality. Despite high adherence to the recommended process measures, patients with CTP-C remain at a higher risk of rebleeding, 6-week and 1-year mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Full adherence to the AVB QI should be the target for quality improvement in patients with cirrhosis.

Post-sepsis psychiatric disorder, encompassing anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and delirium, is a highly prevalent complication secondary to sepsis, resulting in a marked increase in long-term mortality among affected patients. Regrettably, psychiatric impairment associated with sepsis is frequently disregarded by clinicians. This review aims to summarize recent advancements in the understanding of the pathophysiology, prevention, and treatment of post-sepsis mental disorder, including coronavirus disease 2019-related psychiatric impairment. The pathophysiology of post-sepsis psychiatric disorder is complex and is known to involve blood-brain barrier disruption, overactivation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, neurotransmitter dysfunction, programmed cell death, and impaired neuroplasticity. No unified diagnostic criteria for this disorder are currently available; however, screening scales are often applied in its assessment. Modifiable risk factors for psychiatric impairment post-sepsis include the number of experienced traumatic memories, the length of ICU stay, level of albumin, the use of vasopressors or inotropes, daily activity function after sepsis, and the cumulative dose of dobutamine. To contribute to the prevention of post-sepsis psychiatric disorder, it may be beneficial to implement targeted interventions for these modifiable risk factors. Specific therapies for this condition remain scarce. Nevertheless, non-pharmacological approaches, such as comprehensive nursing care, may provide a promising avenue for treating psychiatric disorder following sepsis. In addition, although several therapeutic drugs have shown preliminary efficacy in animal models, further confirmation of their potential is required through follow-up clinical studies.

Chlorogenic acid (CGA) has incredible potential for various pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and agricultural applications. However, the traditional extraction approach from plants is time-consuming, further limiting its production. Herein, we design and construct the de novo biosynthesis pathway of CGA using modular coculture engineering in Escherichia coli, which is composed of MG09 and BD07 strains. To accomplish this, the phenylalanine-deficient MG09 strain was engineered to utilize xylose preferentially and to overproduce precursor caffeic acid, while the tyrosine-deficient BD07 strain was constructed to consume glucose exclusively to enhance another precursor quinic acid availability for the biosynthesis of CGA. Further pathway modularization and balancing in the context of syntrophic cocultures resulted in additional production improvement. The coculture strategy avoids metabolic flux competition in the biosynthesis of two CGA precursors, caffeic acid and quinic acid, and allows for production improvement by balancing module proportions. Finally, the optimized coculture based on the aforementioned efforts produced 131.31 ± 7.89 mg/L CGA. Overall, the modular coculture engineering strategy in this study provides a reference for constructing microbial cell factories that can efficiently biomanufacture complex natural products.

RESUMEN

Photocatalysis driven by plasmon-induced hot carriers has been gaining increasing attention. Recent studies have demonstrated that plasmon-induced hot carriers can directly participate in photocatalytic reactions, leading to great enhancement in solar energy conversion efficiency, by improving the catalytic activity or changing selectivity. Nevertheless, the utilization efficiency of hot carriers remains unsatisfactory. Therefore, how to correctly understand the generation and transfer process of hot carriers, as well as accurately differentiate between the possible mechanisms, have become a key point of attention. In this review, we overview the fundamental processes and mechanisms underlying hot carrier generation and transport, followed by highlighting the importance of hot carrier monitoring methods and related photocatalytic reactions. Furthermore, possible strategies for the further characterization of plasmon-induced hot carriers and boosting their utilization efficiency have been proposed. We hope that a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental behaviors of hot carriers can aid in designing more efficient photocatalysts for plasmon-induced photocatalytic reactions.

RESUMEN

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an in vivo imaging modality that provides non-invasive, high resolution and fast cross-sectional images of the optic nerve head, retina and choroid. OCT angiography (OCTA) is an emerging tool. It is a non-invasive, dye-free imaging approach of visualising the microvasculature of the retina and choroid by employing motion contrast imaging for blood flow detection and is gradually receiving attention for its potential roles in various neuro-ophthalmic and retinal conditions. We will review the clinical utility of the OCT in the management of various common neuro-ophthalmic and neurological disorders. We also review some of the OCTA research findings in these conditions. Finally, we will discuss the limitations of OCT as well as introduce other emerging technologies.

Background: Clinical appearance and high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) are indispensable for diagnosing skin diseases by providing internal and external information. However, their complex combination brings challenges for primary care physicians and dermatologists. Thus, we developed a deep multimodal fusion network (DMFN) model combining analysis of clinical close-up and HFUS images for binary and multiclass classification in skin diseases. Methods: Between Jan 10, 2017, and Dec 31, 2020, the DMFN model was trained and validated using 1269 close-ups and 11,852 HFUS images from 1351 skin lesions. The monomodal convolutional neural network (CNN) model was trained and validated with the same close-up images for comparison. Subsequently, we did a prospective and multicenter study in China. Both CNN models were tested prospectively on 422 cases from 4 hospitals and compared with the results from human raters (general practitioners, general dermatologists, and dermatologists specialized in HFUS). The performance of binary classification (benign vs. malignant) and multiclass classification (the specific diagnoses of 17 types of skin diseases) measured by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) were evaluated. This study is registered with www.chictr.org.cn (ChiCTR2300074765). Findings: The performance of the DMFN model (AUC, 0.876) was superior to that of the monomodal CNN model (AUC, 0.697) in the binary classification (P = 0.0063), which was also better than that of the general practitioner (AUC, 0.651, P = 0.0025) and general dermatologists (AUC, 0.838; P = 0.0038). By integrating close-up and HFUS images, the DMFN model attained an almost identical performance in comparison to dermatologists (AUC, 0.876 vs. AUC, 0.891; P = 0.0080). For the multiclass classification, the DMFN model (AUC, 0.707) exhibited superior prediction performance compared with general dermatologists (AUC, 0.514; P = 0.0043) and dermatologists specialized in HFUS (AUC, 0.640; P = 0.0083), respectively. Compared to dermatologists specialized in HFUS, the DMFN model showed better or comparable performance in diagnosing 9 of the 17 skin diseases. Interpretation: The DMFN model combining analysis of clinical close-up and HFUS images exhibited satisfactory performance in the binary and multiclass classification compared with the dermatologists. It may be a valuable tool for general dermatologists and primary care providers. High-tension glaucoma (HTG) is one of the most common forms of primary open angle glaucoma. The purpose of this study was to assess in HTG brain, whether the elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) had an effect on the brain morphological alterations via structural MRI. We acquired T1WI structural MRI images from 56 subjects including 36 HTG patients and 20 healthy controls. We tested whether the brain morphometry was associated with the mean IOP in HTG patients. Moreover, we conducted moderation analysis to assess the interactions between subject type (HTG - healthy controls) and IOP. In HTG group, cortical thickness was negatively correlated with the mean IOP in the left rostral middle frontal gyrus, left pars triangularis, right precentral gyrus, left postcentral gyrus, left superior temporal gyrus (p < 0.05, FDR corrected). Four of the five regions negatively correlated with mean IOP showed reduced cortical thickness in HTG group compared with healthy controls, which were the left rostral middle frontal gyrus, left pars triangularis, left postcentral gyrus and left superior temporal gyrus (p < 0.05, FDR corrected). IOP moderated the interaction between subject type and cortical thickness of the left rostral middle frontal gyrus (p = 0.0017), left pars triangularis (p = 0.0011), left postcentral gyrus (p = 0.0040) and left superior temporal gyrus (p = 0.0066). Elevated IOP may result brain morphometry alterations such as cortical thinning. The relationship between IOP and brain morphometry underlines the importance of the IOP regulation for HTG patients.

BACKGROUND: Neurologically isolated ocular motor nerve palsies often present a management dilemma. Neuroimaging is more likely to be offered to patients <50 years without coexisting ischaemic risk factors as their risk of sinister underlying causes is thought to be higher. However, populations are rapidly ageing and advanced neuroimaging is now more widely available. We thus investigated the incidence of abnormal neuroimaging outcomes in the traditionally low-risk older patient group. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of 353 patients presenting with isolated ocular motor nerve palsies to a tertiary neuro-ophthalmology service in Singapore over a four-year (2015 to 2019) period. Clinical data was obtained through manual review of case records. Common aetiologies, age-based differences in prevalence of causes and abnormal neuroimaging outcomes were statistically analysed. RESULTS: Abnormal neuroimaging outcomes were significantly greater in the younger cohort only when age segregation was performed at 60 years of age. In a multivariate analysis, acute onset rather than ischaemic risk factors were independently predictive of normal neuroimaging outcomes. After adjusting for prior cancer risk and clinical bias from presumed ischaemic palsies, abnormal neuroimaging outcomes were seen in 14.1% ≥ 50 yrs, 10.9% ≥ 60 yrs and 15.1% ≥ 70 yrs. CONCLUSIONS: In patients presenting with isolated ocular motor nerve palsies, acute onset may be a more reliable indicator of an ischaemic palsy rather than advanced age or presence of ischaemic risk factors. If onset is not acute, neuroimaging should be considered irrespective of age and coexisting ischaemic risk factors.

This study was designed to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of relevant parameters of 18F-prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-1007 PET/CT in predicting the pathological grade of primary prostate cancer. Briefly, a prospective analysis was performed on 53 patients diagnosed with prostate cancer by systematic puncture biopsy, followed by 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT examination prior to treatment within 10 d. The patients were grouped in accordance with the Gleason grading system revised by the International Association of Urology Pathology (ISUP). They were divided into high-grade group (ISUP 4-5 group) and low-grade group (ISUP 1-3 group). The differences in maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax), tumor-to-background ratio (TBR), intraprostatic PSMA-derived tumor volume (iPSMA-TV), and intraprostatic total lesion PSMA (iTL-PSMA) between the high- and low-grade group were statistically significant (p < .001). No significant difference was found for mean standardized uptake value (SUVmean) between the high- and low-grade groups (Z = -1.131, p = .258). Besides, binary multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that only iPSMA-TV and iTL-PSMA were independent predictors of the pathological grading, for which the odds ratios were 18.821 [95% confidence interval (CI): 2.040-173.614, p = .010] and 0.758 (95% CI: 0.613-0.938, p = .011), respectively. The area under the ROC of this regression model was 0.983 (95% CI: 0.958-1.00, p < .001). Only iTL-PSMA was a significant parameter for distinguishing ISUP-4 and ISUP-5 groups (Z = -2.043, p = .041). In a nutshell, 18F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT has good application value in predicting the histopathological grade of primary prostate cancer. Three-dimensional volume metabolism parameters iPSMA-TV and iTL-PSMA were found to be independent predictors for pathological grade.

Objective To investigate the health status of workers exposed to noise in a brewery in Beijing and to analyze the relationship between hearing loss and blood pressure. Methods A total of 949 noise-exposed workers in a brewery who participated in occupational health examination were selected as the investigation subjects. A survey was conducted to investigate the pure tone hearing threshold and abnormal blood pressure of the workers with different characteristics, and to analyze the relationship between the two. Results Among the noise-exposed workers, the detection rates of hearing abnormality, hypertension, and increased systolic and diastolic blood pressure were 73.55%, 52.37%, 43.84% and 46.47%, respectively. The detection rates of hearing abnormality, indicators of hypertension, high frequency hearing threshold abnormality and increased binaural high frequency hearing threshold on average in males were higher than those in females (P 0.05), the detection rates of other hearing abnormality, indicators of hypertension, speech frequency hearing threshold abnormality, high frequency hearing threshold abnormality,increased binaural high frequency hearing threshold on average and the weighted value of the better ear's hearing threshold all increased or had an increasing trend with the increase of age or working years (P< 0.05). The detection rates of hypertension in the groups with high frequency hearing threshold abnormality and increased binaural high frequency hearing threshold on average were higher than those in the normal group (P<0.05). Conclusion The noise-exposed workers in the brewery have hearing impairment, which is related to the occurrence of hypertension. It is recommended to strengthen the publicity and education on noise protection and take protective measures to reduce the occurrence of occupational noise injury.

DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective double-centre observational study of IHCA patients from January 2015 to December 2021. Data including prearrest diagnosis, clinical features of the IHCA and laboratory results after admission were collected and analysed. Logistic regression analysis was used for multivariate analyses to identify the risk factors for death. A nomogram was formulated and internally evaluated by the boot validation and the area under the curve (AUC). Performance of the nomogram was further accessed by Kaplan-Meier survival curves for patients who survived the initial IHCA. SETTING: Intensive care unit, Tongji Hospital, China. PARTICIPANTS: Adult patients (≥18 years) with IHCA after admission. Pregnant women, patients with 'do not resuscitation' order and patients treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation were excluded. INTERVENTIONS: None. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome was the death after IHCA. RESULTS: Patients (n=561) were divided into two groups: non-sustained return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) group (n=241) and sustained ROSC group (n=320). Significant differences were found in sex (p=0.006), cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) duration (p<0.001), total duration of CPR (p=0.014), rearrest (p<0.001) and length of stay (p=0.004) between two groups. Multivariate analysis identified that rearrest, duration of CPR and length of stay were independently associated with death. The nomogram including these three factors was well validated using boot calibration plot and exhibited excellent discriminative ability (AUC 0.88, 95% CI 0.83 to 0.93). The tertiles of patients in sustained ROSC group stratified by anticipated probability of death revealed significantly different survival rate (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Our proposed nomogram based on these three factors is a simple, robust prediction model to accurately predict the death after IHCA.

To understand the current quality status and rearing situation of Bombyx Batryticatus, the authors collected 102 batches of Bombyx Batryticatus from different main producing areas and five major Chinese medicine markets from 2016 to 2018, and measured the properties and quality of the silk gland, to clarify the quality status of Bombyx Batryticatus from different producing areas and markets. In addition, 35 batches of Bombyx Batryticatus from 2019 to 2022 were used to verify the silk gland after revision. Moreover, Beauveria Bassiana was inoculated in the silkworm of 4-5 instars, and standardized rearing was carried out until they die. The death rate and the quality of Bombyx Batryticatus were measured to determine the differences in Bombyx Batryticatus of different instars, and explore the rationality of the infection age of Bombyx Batryticatus in Chinese Pharmacopoeia(2020). The results revealed that in the 102 batches of Bombyx Batryticatus, the qualification rate of silk gland was low; the content of total ash far exceeded the standard; the content of beauvericin varied greatly. The qualification rate of the silk gland of the 35 batches of Bombyx Batryticatus was only 47.49%, which could be increased to 73.00% if the number of silk gland was 2 to 4. The death rate of Bombyx Batryticatus at different infection ages was quite different, with uneven quality. Generally, the yield of Bombyx Batryticatus inoculated on the first day of the fifth instar was high with good quality. Therefore, in combination with the quality and actual production of Bombyx Batryticatus, the following suggestions were proposed for revision of Bombyx Batryticatus in Chinese Pharmacopoeia(2025): The number of silk gland should be revised as 2-4 bright brown or bright black silk glands, after which, the quality of Bombyx Batryticatus could be guaranteed, and the "quality identification based on character" could also be reflected scientifically; the content determination index that the content of beauvericin shall not be less than 0.017% should be added to better control the quality of Bombyx Batryticatus; the infection age should be revised as the first day of the fifth instar to narrow the age span, which could better fit the actual production and ensure the quality of Bombyx Batryticatus.

Realizing the dual emission of fluorescence-phosphorescence in a single system is an extremely important topic in the fields of biological imaging, sensing, and information encryption. However, the phosphorescence process is usually in an inherently "dark state" at room temperature due to the involvement of spin-forbidden transition and the rapid non-radiative decay rate of the triplet state. In this work, we achieved luminescent harvesting of the dark phosphorescence processes by coupling singlet-triplet molecular emitters with a rationally designed plasmonic cavity. The achieved Purcell enhancement effect of over 1000-fold allows for overcoming the triplet forbidden transitions, enabling radiation enhancement with selectable emission wavelengths. Spectral results and theoretical simulations indicate that the fluorescence-phosphorescence peak position can be intelligently tailored in a broad range of wavelengths, from visible to near-infrared. Our study sheds new light on plasmonic tailoring of molecular emission behavior, which is crucial for advancing research on plasmon-tailored fluorescence-phosphorescence spectroscopy in optoelectronics and biomedicine.

BACKGROUND: The high individual variability in coping with stress is often attributed to genetic background differences, sustained environmental conditions, or a combination of both. However, the neural mechanisms underlying coping style variability are still poorly understood. METHODS: Here we examined the impact of a single extended emotional challenge on coping style variability and the associated involvement of the hippocampus, medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), and periaqueductal gray (PAG). Male Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 170) were trained in an extended 2-way shuttle avoidance (eTWSA) task for 7 days, and daily avoidance rates were measured. Forced swim test, elevated plus maze, or Morris water maze was tested before or after eTWSA exposure. Excitotoxic lesion of the hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG) was performed by Ibotenic infusion. Transient pharmacological blocking of DG, mPFC, or PAG was performed by muscimol or CNQX+TTX infusion. RESULTS: Exposing rats to eTWSA was found to lead to naturally developing dichotomous, not continuous, coping styles, which we termed active avoidance (AA) or reactive escape (RE). Prior emotional responses did not predict the developing coping style. AA was associated with beneficial outcomes, including reduced behavioral despair and improved spatial learning. RE led to impaired spatial retrieval. AA was abolished by lesioning or pharmacological blocking of the DG. RE was prevented by blocking mPFC or PAG. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that a single exposure to a significant emotional challenge can lead, in otherwise healthy individuals, to dichotomous development of an active or reactive coping style with distinctive neural correlates and subsequent behavioral significance.

It is challenging to recapitulate the natural extracellular matrix's hierarchical nano/microfibrous three-dimensional (3D) structure with multilevel pores, good mechanical and hydrophilic properties, and excellent bioactivity for designing and developing advanced biomimetic materials. This work reports a new facile strategy for the scalable manufacturing of such a 3D architecture. Natural polymers in an aqueous solution are interpenetrated into a 3D microfibrous matrix with arbitrary shapes and property characteristics to self-assemble in situ into a nanofibrous network. The collagen fiber-like hierarchical structure and interconnected multilevel pores are achieved by self-assembly of the formed nanofibers within the 3D matrix, triggered by a simple cross-linking treatment. The as-prepared alginate/polypropylene biomimetic matrices are bioactive and have a tunable mechanical property (compressive modulus from ∼17 to ∼24 kPa) and a tunable hydrophilicity (water contact angle from ∼94° to 63°). This facile and versatile strategy allows eco-friendly and scalable manufacturing of diverse biomimetic matrices or modification of any existing porous matrices using different polymers.
