RESUMEN

Tannins are phenolic compounds that provide benefits to ruminants due to their protein-binding affinities and antioxidant properties. However, tannins may also have negative orosensorial and postingestive effects that decrease feed intake. This study explored how lambs trade off the ingestion of crude protein (CP) with the ingestion of potentially beneficial and toxic condensed and hydrolyzable tannins, and the ensuing impacts on diet digestibility, animal performance, and blood parameters. Thirty-two lambs were housed in individual pens for 8 wk and had access to 2 isoenergetic diets that varied in the concentration of CP (High-high in protein [HP] or Low-least preferred [LP]) and the presence of a mix of condensed and hydrolyzable tannins (4% DM). Animals were assigned to 4 treatment groups (N = 8 lambs/group) and received a simultaneous offer of: HP and LP (Control); HP and LP + tannins (HP - LP+); HP+ tannins and LP (HP + LP-); and both HP and LP with tannins (HP + LP+). All lambs preferred HP over LP and they avoided tannins in the diets (P < 0.001). Dry matter and CP intake were the lowest in HP + LP- (P < 0.0001), and DMD did not differ between Control and the other groups (P > 0.05), but it was greater for HP - LP + (P < 0.0001). CP digestibility was greater for groups without tannins in HP (P < 0.0001), but average daily gain (ADG) did not differ among treatments (P > 0.05). No differences between Control and HP + LP + were found in plasma antioxidant activity, total phenolic concentration, or haptoglobin concentration (P > 0.05). Intake of tannins was HP + LP+ > HP + LP- > HP - LP + (P < 0.0001), and fecal excretion of nitrogen (N) was HP + LP+ > HP - LP+ = HP + LP- > Control (P < 0.05). In addition, intake of tannins with both diets reduced blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentration relative to Control (P < 0.05), thus suggesting a shift in the partitioning of N excretion from urine to feces. In summary, lambs prioritized the selection of HP over LP, regardless of the presence of a tannin extract in either or both diets. Nevertheless, lambs modulated their tannin consumption as a function of the specific diet where the tannin extract was added, with increasing levels of intake as tannins were present in just LP, then in just HP, and finally in both diets. Dietary tannins did not constrain ADG and resulted in a shift in the partitioning of N excretion from urine to feces. Such shifts have been found to result in reduced production of environmental pollutants such as ammonia, nitrous oxide, and nitrates.


Tannins are plant chemicals that can provide benefits to ruminants due to their antioxidant activity and positive effects on nutrient uptake. However, tannins could also promote negative (i.e., toxic) effects on herbivores. This study explored how lambs build their diets when offered between 2 diets that varied in protein concentration (low or high), both with and without tannins (4%) and the ensuing consequences on diet digestibility, animal performance, and some blood parameters indicative of antioxidant activity and inflammation. All lambs preferred the high-over the low-protein diet, regardless of the inclusion of tannins in the diets. Digestibility of dry matter did not differ between lambs that had diet choices with or without tannins, and body weight gains were not different across all treatments. No differences were found among dietary treatment groups in blood antioxidant activity or indicators of inflammation. Tannin intake promoted a shift in the fate of nitrogen excretion from urine to feces, suggesting reductions in environmental pollutants such as ammonia, nitrous oxide, and nitrates. Thus, tannins did not promote negative impacts on animal performance with potential concomitant beneficial effects on the environment.

Background: The one-bone forearm procedure has been considered as a potential treatment for severe forearm deformities. However, its primary limitation lies in the elevated risks of nonunion and infection. In order to enhance union rates, a technical modification was introduced, aiming not only to establish end-to-end radio-ulnar fixation but also to incorporate an additional overlay and fixation between the proximal and distal radius osteotomy stumps. This technique, initially applied in a heterogeneous patient population including individuals with neurological, tumoral, and congenital conditions, yielded promising results, achieving a consolidation rate of 100% and enabling supination corrections of up to 120°. Methods: In this study, we present a retrospective cohort of 28 patients, with an average age of 9 years, all afflicted by forearm supination contracture exceeding 90° secondary to neonatal brachial plexus injury. These patients underwent treatment with the modified technique. Results: The mean correction achieved in forearm rotation was 116°, and the average follow-up period extended to 43 months. Remarkably, all patients exhibited bone union within an average period of 6.6 weeks, without any complications. Conclusion: Our findings underscore the efficacy of this modified technique, which enables substantial rotational corrections, boasts a high union rate, and maintains a low incidence of complications. This approach is particularly valuable for young patients suffering from neonatal brachial plexus injury with severe fixed supination deformities. Case series Level of evidence: IV.

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide and is, in most cases, a consequence of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), ultimately resulting in the death of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Current treatments are mostly focused on normalizing IOP, but we propose the additional use of neuroprotective agents, including methylene blue (MB), to block the loss of RGCs. Wistar rats were subjected to episcleral vein cauterization (EVC) in the left eye while the right eye was sham-operated. One week later, they were divided into two groups, which were injected with either 2.0 mg/kg MB or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), twice a day, for 7 days. Fifteen days after surgery, rats were tested with scotopic electroretinography (ERG) or pattern electroretinography (PERG). After sacrifice, the number of RGCs and the thickness of the inner retina (IR) were evaluated both in the peripheral and central areas of the retina. Scotopic ERG showed a marked reduction (p < 0.0001) on the a- and b-wave amplitude and oscillatory potential (OP) complexity of the eyes subjected to EVC. These parameters were significantly (p < 0.01) restored by the application of MB. PERG indicated that EVC was responsible for a very significant decrease in N2 amplitude (p < 0.0001) and prolongation of N2 implicit time (p < 0.0001). Treatment with MB significantly restored N2 amplitude (p < 0.0001). In parallel with the ERG results, morphological analysis showed a significant loss of RGCs (p < 0.0001) and IR thickness (p < 0.0001) in both the peripheral and central retinas subjected to EVC, which was significantly prevented (p < 0.0001) by MB treatment. We have shown that MB treatment can be effective in preventing physiological and morphological hallmarks of optic neuropathy in a model of ocular hypertension, which faithfully recapitulates human open-angle glaucoma. Due to its high safety profile, this drug could therefore represent a new pharmacologic strategy to prevent vision loss in glaucoma patients.

A mass was removed surgically from the right orbit of a 1-d-old Holstein calf. Grossly, the mass filled the rostral part of an enlarged orbit and compressed the globe toward the caudal pole of the orbit. The brown, 6-cm tumor had central yellow and brown areas, and a smooth, glistening cut surface. Microscopically, the neoplasm was highly cellular and composed of spindle cells arranged in irregular, broad, interlacing streams and bundles, forming a herringbone pattern and supported by a sparse collagenous matrix. Neoplastic cells infiltrated surrounding soft tissues and compressed the globe. The neoplastic cells had positive immunolabeling for α-smooth muscle actin, desmin, and vimentin, and negative immunolabeling for factor VIII, myoglobin, cytokeratin, and skeletal muscle actin. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry results confirmed a diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma. To our knowledge, congenital periocular leiomyosarcoma has not been reported in cattle previously. This rare tumor could be included as a differential diagnosis in newborn calves with periocular masses.

Obesity is both a major risk factor for diabetes and a serious comorbidity of the condition. The twin epidemics of obesity and diabetes have spread globally over the past few decades. Treatment of obesity in patients with diabetes provides a host of clinical benefits that encompass virtually all body systems. Despite this, multiple lines of evidence suggest that the efficacy of most therapies for weight loss is significantly reduced among patients with diabetes. With this background, we summarize the evidence of a differential effect of lifestyle, pharmacological, and surgical treatments for obesity in patients with existing diabetes, and explore the potential mechanisms involved in this phenomenon. This information is then used to formulate strategies to improve weight loss outcomes for patients with diabetes.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether routinary walking activity and the derived neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio are associated with outcomes in patients with recurrent and/or metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck. METHODS: This multicenter retrospective cohort study included 64 patients diagnosed with recurrent and/or metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck and treated with immunotherapy (Programmed Death-1 and Programmed Death-ligand-1 proteins inhibitors) at two tertiary centers. We compared a group that performed uninterrupted physical activity for 1 h per day and controls who performed no activity. The derived neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio was calculated as follows: [neutrophils / (leukocytes - neutrophils)]. Progression-free survival and overall survival were evaluated. RESULTS: We included 28 (44%) and 36 (56%) patients in the activity and non-activity groups, respectively. Patient characteristics, treatment details, and tumor Programmed Death-ligand-1 expression were not associated with either progression-free survival or overall survival. Physical activity was an independent beneficial factor for progression-free survival (p < 0.001) and overall survival (p < 0.001). By contrast, a derived neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio <3.5 was an independent beneficial factor for overall survival (p = 0.013), but not for progression-free survival (p = 0.328). CONCLUSIONS: Walking one hour per day and having a high proportion of lymphocytes to neutrophiles (expressed as a low derived neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio) independently predict a better prognosis in patients with recurrent and/or metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck treated with immunotherapy. A useful approach to deepen our knowledge about the origin and evolution of venom systems in Reptilia has been exploring the vast biodiversity of this clade of vertebrates in search of orally produced proteins with toxic actions, as well as their corresponding delivery systems. The occurrence of toxins in anguimorph lizards has been demonstrated experimentally or inferred from reports of the toxic effects of the oral secretions of taxa within the Varanidae and Helodermatidae families. In the present study, we have focused on two alligator lizards of the Anguidae family, the Mexican alligator lizard, Abronia graminea, and the red-lipped arboreal alligator lizard, A. lythrochila. In addition, the fine morphology of teeth of the latter species is described. The presence of a conserved set of proteins, including B-type natriuretic peptides, cysteine-rich secretory proteins, group III phospholipase A2, and kallikrein, in submandibular gland extracts was demonstrated for both Abronia species. These proteins belong to toxin families found in oral gland secretions of venomous reptile species. This finding, along with previous demonstration of toxin-producing taxa in both paleo- and neoanguimorpha clades, provides further support for the existence of a handful of conserved toxin families in oral secretions across the 100+ million years of Anguimorpha cladogenesis.

Atypical enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (aEPEC) is a significant cause of diarrhea in low- and middle-income countries. Certain aEPEC strains, including the Brazilian representative strain of serotype O51:H40 called aEPEC 1711-4, can use flagella to attach to, invade, and persist in T84 and Caco-2 intestinal cells. It can also translocate from the gut to extraintestinal sites in a rat model. Although various aspects of the virulence of this strain were studied and the requirement of a type III secretion system for the efficiency of the invasion process was demonstrated, the expression of the locus of enterocyte effacement (LEE) genes during the invasion and intracellular persistence remains unclear. To address this question, the expression of flagella and the different LEE operons was evaluated during kinetic experiments of the interaction of aEPEC 1711-4 with enterocytes in vitro. The genome of the strain was also sequenced. The results showed that flagella expression remained unchanged, but the expression of eae and escJ increased during the early interaction and invasion of aEPEC 1711-4 into Caco-2 cells, and there was no change 24 h post-infection during the persistence period. The number of actin accumulation foci formed on HeLa cells also increased during the 6-h analysis. No known gene related to the invasion process was identified in the genome of aEPEC 1711-4, which was shown to belong to the global EPEC lineage 10. These findings suggest that the LEE components and the intimate adherence promoted by intimin are necessary for the invasion and persistence of aEPEC 1711-4, but the detailed mechanism needs further study.IMPORTANCEAtypical enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (aEPEC) is a major cause of diarrhea, especially in low- and middle-income countries, like Brazil. However, due to the genome heterogeneity of each clonal group, it is difficult to comprehend the pathogenicity of this strain fully. Among aEPEC strains, 1711-4 can invade eukaryotic cells in vitro, cross the gut barrier, and reach extraintestinal sites in animal models. By studying how different known aEPEC virulence factors are expressed during the invasion process, we can gain insight into the commonalities of this phenotype among other aEPEC strains. This will help in developing preventive measures to control infections caused by invasive strains. No known virulence-encoding genes linked to the invasion process were found. Nevertheless, additional studies are still necessary to evaluate the role of other factors in this phenotype.

This paper proposes a hybrid control framework based on internal model concepts, sliding mode control methodology, and fractional-order calculus theory. As a result, a modified Smith predictor (SP) is proposed for nonlinear systems with significant delays. The particular predictive approach enhances the sliding mode control (SMC) controller's transient responses for dead-time processes, and the SMC gives the predictive structure robustness for model mismatches by combining the previous methods with fractional order concepts; the result is a dynamical sliding mode controller. A numerical example is considered to evaluate the performance of the proposed approach, where a step change, external disturbance, and parametric uncertainty test are performed. A real application in the TCLab Arduino kit is presented; the proposed method presented good performance with a little amount of chattering, and in the disturbance rejection case, the overshoot increased with an aggressive response; in both cases, better tuning parameters can improve the process response and the controller action.

In this paper, we aim to enhance genetic algorithms (GAs) by integrating a dynamic model based on biological life cycles. This study addresses the challenge of maintaining diversity and adaptability in GAs by incorporating stages of birth, growth, reproduction, and death into the algorithm's framework. We consider an asynchronous execution of life cycle stages to individuals in the population, ensuring a steady-state evolution that preserves high-quality solutions while maintaining diversity. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed extension outperforms traditional GAs and is as good or better than other well-known and well established algorithms like PSO and EvoSpace in various benchmark problems, particularly regarding convergence speed and solution qu/ality. The study concludes that incorporating biological life-cycle dynamics into GAs enhances their robustness and efficiency, offering a promising direction for future research in evolutionary computation.

Disruptions in the food supply chain are events that affect the flow of products and can be caused by extreme weather, natural disasters, conflicts, pandemics, and political situations, among others. These events can significantly impact food products' availability, quality, and cost, creating risks to the well-being of local populations and livelihoods. The specific literature on food supply chains needs to address other approaches to risk categorisation, which allow for establishing reference frameworks focused on the general classification of types of disruption and parameters related to solution methods. In this paper, we present a literature review to analyse the disruptions in the food supply chain. We classified 74 papers according to the types of disruptions, stakeholders, response level, supply chain echelon, solution methods, goals, and related considerations. The review results showed that the most common disruptions in the food supply chain are climatic, biological and environmental, logistics and infrastructure, and supply. The results of this review allow us to suggest some new research directions.

PURPOSE: Depending on its axis, pronation varies from the radius rotation around the steady ulna to the reciprocal adduction of the radius and abduction of the ulna. While there is no question that pronator teres is a central pronation agonist, anconeus's role is not settled. The current investigation comparing palpation and ultrasonography in these two muscles during pronation along the axis capitulum-second digit evolved from a serendipitous finding in a clinical anatomy seminar. METHODS: Single-hand palpation and two-transducer ultrasonography over anconeus and pronator teres were used on ten normal subjects to investigate their contraction during pronation around the capitulum-second digit axis. These studies were done independently and blind to the results of the other. The statistical analysis between palpation and ultrasonography was performed with Cohen's kappa coefficient and the χ2 test. RESULTS: On palpation, on resisted full pronation, anconeus contracted in 8/10 subjects and pronator teres in 10/10 subjects. Without resistance, the corresponding ratios were 5/10 and 9/10. On two-transducer ultrasonography, the comparable ratios were 7/10 and 10/10, and 3/10 and 10/10. A fair concordance (Cohen's kappa = 0.21) between palpation and ultrasonography in detecting the simultaneous status of anconeus and pronator teres during resisted full pronation. Anatomic dissection illustrated the elements involved. CONCLUSIONS: Plain palpation confirmed by ultrasonography showed the simultaneous contraction of anconeus and pronator teres during resisted pronation in most of the studied subjects. The study suggests that palpation can be helpful in directly studying muscle activity during movement.

Gelatinous zooplankton constitutes a polyphyletic group with a convergent evolutionary history and poorly known biogeographical patterns. In the Gulf of Mexico, a region with complex geological, hydrological, and biotic histories, the study of this group has been limited to taxonomical and ecological aspects. In this study, we implemented a track analysis to identify distributional patterns of gelatinous zooplankton in the Gulf of Mexico and adjacent waters based on a dataset of 6067 occurrence records corresponding to Hydrozoa, Scyphozoa, Cubozoa, Ctenophora, Chaetognatha, Thaliacea, and Appendicularia. Information was compiled from the Global Biodiversity Facility Information (GBIF) and Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS) databases and peer-reviewed literature. Individual tracks were constructed by joining the minimum distance between the occurrence localities of each taxon using a minimum spanning tree algorithm. We identified generalized tracks using parsimony analysis of endemicity with progressive character elimination (PAE-PCE). The areas where different generalized tracks overlapped were considered to represent panbiogeographical nodes. Seven generalized tracks (two with nested patterns) and six panbiogeographical nodes were recognized, mainly in neritic zones. The distributional patterns of gelatinous zooplankton allowed us to identify four biogeographic areas, supporting previously proposed biogeographic schemes. Gelatinous zooplankton in the Gulf of Mexico showed a convergent spatial distribution that can be explained by vicariant and dispersal events. The historical biogeography of the gelatinous biotas of the Gulf of Mexico has been little studied compared to ecological approaches, and the lack of integrative studies considering historical patterns is evident. This type of research is fundamental to understanding the evolutionary history of natural resources from a spatial perspective, identifying sites of biodiversity and endemism, and establishing a biogeographic baseline of the region for further studies.

Background: Gasoline, a complex mixture of volatile organic compounds is classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans. Gasoline station attendants, consistently exposed to its hazardous components, may face genotoxic effects. This study aimed to assess the influence of varying work shift durations on DNA damage in gasoline station attendants. Methods: Ninety individuals from three locations in southern México were studied. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated, and DNA damage was assessed using the comet assay. Demographic, occupational, and lifestyle data were collected. Statistical analyses included t-tests, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation. Results: Significant differences in DNA damage parameters were observed between exposed and unexposed groups. The impact of tobacco, alcohol, and exercise on DNA damage was negligible. Extended work shifts (12 and 24 hours) showed heightened DNA damage compared to 8-hour shifts and the unexposed group. A novel finding revealed a modest but significant correlation between DNA damage and job seniority. Conclusion: The study highlights the intricate relationship between occupational exposure to gasoline components, DNA damage, and work shift lengths. Extended shifts correlate with heightened genotoxic effects, emphasizing the importance of personalized safety measures. The significant correlation between DNA damage and job seniority introduces occupational longevity as a determinant in the genetic health of gasoline station attendants. This discovery has implications for implementing targeted interventions and preventive strategies to safeguard workers' genetic integrity throughout their years of service. The study calls for further exploration of unconsidered factors in understanding the multifactorial nature of DNA damage in this occupational setting.

A key strategy in enhancing the efficacy of collagen-based hydrogels involves incorporating polysaccharides, which have shown great promise for wound healing. In this study, semi-interpenetrating polymeric network (semi-IPN) hydrogels comprised of collagen (Col) with the macrocyclic oligosaccharide ß-cyclodextrin (ß-CD) (20-80 wt.%) were synthesised. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the successful fabrication of these Col/ß-CD hydrogels, evidenced by the presence of characteristic absorption bands, including the urea bond band at ∼1740 cm-1, related with collagen crosslinking. Higher ß-CD content was associated with increased crosslinking, higher swelling, and faster gelation. The ß-CD content directly influenced the morphology and semi-crystallinity. All Col/ß-CD hydrogels displayed superabsorbent properties, enhanced thermal stability, and exhibited slow degradation rates. Mechanical properties were significantly improved with contents higher than ß-CD 40 wt.%. These hydrogels inhibited the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria and facilitated the controlled release of agents, such as malachite green, methylene blue, and ketorolac. The chemical composition of the Col/ß-CD hydrogels did not induce cytotoxic effects on monocytes and fibroblast cells. Instead, they actively promoted cellular metabolic activity, encouraging cell growth and proliferation. Moreover, cell signalling modulation was observed, leading to changes in the expression of TNF-α and IL-10 cytokines. In summary, the results of this research indicate that these novel hydrogels possess multifunctional characteristics, including biocompatibility, super-swelling capacity, good thermal, hydrolytic, and enzymatic degradation resistance, antibacterial activity, inflammation modulation, and the ability to be used for controlled delivery of therapeutic agents, indicating high potential for application in advanced wound dressings.

INTRODUCTION: Leveraging the nonmonolithic structure of Latin America, which represents a large variability in social determinants of health (SDoH) and high levels of genetic admixture, we aim to evaluate the relative contributions of SDoH and genetic ancestry in predicting dementia prevalence in Latin American populations. METHODS: Community-dwelling participants aged 65 and older (N = 3808) from Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Peru completed the 10/66 protocol assessments. Dementia was diagnosed using the cross-culturally validated 10/66 algorithm. Multivariate linear regression models adjusted for SDoH were used in the main analysis. This study used cross-sectional data from the 1066 population-based study. RESULTS: Individuals with higher proportions of Native American (>70%) and African American (>70%) ancestry were more likely to exhibit factors contributing to worse SDoH, such as lower educational levels (p < 0.001), lower socioeconomic status (p < 0.001), and higher frequency of vascular risk factors (p < 0.001). After adjusting for measures of SDoH, there was no association between ancestry proportion and dementia probability, and ancestry proportions no longer significantly accounted for the variance in cognitive performance (African predominant p = 0.31 [-0.19, 0.59] and Native predominant p = 0.74 [-0.24, 0.33]). DISCUSSION: The findings suggest that social and environmental factors play a more crucial role than genetic ancestry in predicting dementia prevalence in Latin American populations. This underscores the need for public health strategies and policies that address these social determinants to effectively reduce dementia risk in these communities. HIGHLIGHTS: Countries in Latin America express a large variability in social determinants of health and levels of admixture. After adjustment for downstream societal factors linked to SDoH, genetic ancestry shows no link to dementia. Population ancestry profiles alone do not influence cognitive performance. SDoH are key drivers of racial disparities in dementia and cognitive performance.

OBJECTIVE: Medical nutrition therapy provides the opportunity to compensate for muscle wasting and immune response activation during stress and trauma. The objective of this systematic review is to assess the safety and effectiveness of early enteral nutrition (EEN) in adults with sepsis or septic shock. METHODS: The MEDLINE, Embase, CENTRAL, CINAHL, ClinicalTrials.gov, and ICTRP tools were searched from inception until July 2023. Conference proceedings, the reference lists of included studies, and expert content were queried to identify additional publications. Two review authors completed the study selection, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment; disagreements were resolved through discussion. Inclusion criteria were randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-randomized studies (NRSs) comparing the administration of EEN with no or delayed enteral nutrition (DEE) in adult populations with sepsis or septic shock. RESULTS: Five RCTs (n = 442 participants) and ten NRSs (n = 3724 participants) were included. Low-certainty evidence from RCTs and NRSs suggests that patients receiving EEN could require fewer days of mechanical ventilation (MD -2.65; 95% CI, -4.44-0.86; and MD -2.94; 95% CI, -3.64--2.23, respectively) and may show lower SOFA scores during follow-up (MD -1.64 points; 95% CI, -2.60--0.68; and MD -1.08 points; 95% CI, -1.90--0.26, respectively), albeit with an increased frequency of diarrhea episodes (OR 2.23, 95% CI 1.115-4.34). Even though the patients with EEN show a lower in-hospital mortality rate both in RCTs (OR 0.69; 95% CI, 0.39-1.23) and NRSs (OR 0.89; 95% CI, 0.69-1.13), this difference does not achieve statistical significance. There were no apparent differences for other outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Low-quality evidence suggests that EEN may be a safe and effective intervention for the management of critically ill patients with sepsis or septic shock.

PURPOSE: To use computational modeling to provide a complete and logical description of the electrical and thermal behavior during stereoelectroencephalography-guided (SEEG) radiofrequency thermo-coagulation (RF-TC). METHODS: A coupled electrical-thermal model was used to obtain the temperature distributions in the tissue during RF-TC. The computer model was first validated by an ex vivo model based on liver fragments and later used to study the impact of three different factors on the coagulation zone size: 1) the difference in the tissue surrounding the electrode (gray/white matter), 2) the presence of a peri-electrode gap occupied by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and 3) the energy setting used (power-duration). RESULTS: The model built for the experimental validation was able to predict both the evolution of impedance and the short diameter of the coagulation zone (error < 0.01 mm) reasonably well but overestimated the long diameter by 2 - 3 mm. After adapting the model to clinical conditions, the simulation showed that: 1) Impedance roll-off limited the coagulation size but involved overheating (around 100 °C); 2) The type of tissue around the contacts (gray vs. white matter) had a moderate impact on the coagulation size (maximum difference 0.84 mm), and 3) the peri-electrode gap considerably altered the temperature distributions, avoided overheating, although the diameter of the coagulation zone was not very different from the no-gap case (<0.2 mm). CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that computer modeling, especially subject- and scenario-specific modeling, can be used to estimate in advance the electrical and thermal performance of the RF-TC in brain tissue.
