PURPOSE: This multicenter, retrospective cohort study aimed to compare the risk of ulnar nerve injury in pediatric supracondylar humeral fractures treated with percutaneous lateral-pins, blinded-crossed-pins, and crossed-pins with a mini-incision. METHODS: Data were collected from 1705 children treated between January 2010 and December 2023 at four orthopedic centers in Colombia. The incidence of postoperative ulnar nerve injury was compared among three fixation techniques: lateral-pin, blinded-crossed-pin, and crossed-pin with a mini-incision. RESULTS: A statistically significant difference in nerve injury rates was observed between the lateral-pin and both blinded-crossed-pin and mini-incision crossed-pin techniques (p < 0.001), with the lateral-pin technique demonstrating a significantly lower risk of injury. No significant difference was found between the blinded-crossed-pin and mini-incision crossed-pin techniques (p = 0.67). CONCLUSION: Crossed-pin fixation was associated with a higher incidence of ulnar nerve injury, regardless of the use of a mini-incision. The lateral-pin technique remains the safest option for minimizing iatrogenic nerve injury. There is insufficient evidence to support the mini-incision as a safer alternative to traditional crossed-pin fixation.

Climate change is projected to have substantial economic, social, and environmental impacts worldwide. Currently, the leading solutions for hydrogen storage are in salt caverns, and depleted natural gas reservoirs. However, the required geological formations are limited to certain regions. To increase alternatives for hydrogen storage, this paper proposes storing hydrogen in pipes filled with gravel in lakes, hydropower, and pumped hydro storage reservoirs. Hydrogen is insoluble in water, non-toxic, and does not threaten aquatic life. Results show the levelized cost of hydrogen storage to be 0.17 USD kg-1 at 200 m depth, which is competitive with other large scale hydrogen storage options. Storing hydrogen in lakes, hydropower, and pumped hydro storage reservoirs increases the alternatives for storing hydrogen and might support the development of a hydrogen economy in the future. The global potential for hydrogen storage in reservoirs and lakes is 3 and 12 PWh, respectively. Hydrogen storage in lakes and reservoirs can support the development of a hydrogen economy in the future by providing abundant and cheap hydrogen storage.

This study aimed to describe the changes produced on the occlusal plane (OP), the mandibular position and the dentoalveolar compensations of patients with distalization of the maxillary/mandibular arch assisted by mini-screws (MS). A descriptive case-series study was performed using the digital lateral cephalograms (DLC) of nine patients who underwent orthodontic treatment and required the use of MS for a complete distalization of the maxillary/mandibular arch. Records were collected at three different times (T1-T2-T3) and digitally analyzed (variables: Skeletal diagnosis; maxillary occlusal plane; position of the maxilla/mandible; and dentoalveolar changes of the distalization arch tracing the longitudinal axis of incisors/molars regarding the palatal/mandibular plane). Findings show that the OP varied from T1-T2-T3 in all cases, indicating its stepping or flattening. ODI, APDI, SNA, SNB, and ANB changed minimally in all cases, without variations in the mandibular position or in the skeletal diagnosis. Dentoalveolar measurements also showed differences between T1-T2-T3. In summary, conventional orthodontic treatment modified the OP during the first phase of treatment. Moreover, the distalization mechanics with MS changed the OP and produced dentoalveolar changes, mainly in the inclination of incisors and molars. Other measures considered in the study did not change substantially.

BACKGROUND: Wild-type transthyretin amyloid (ATTRwt) cardiomyopathy is increasingly recognized in the development of heart failure. The link between cardiac performance, hemodynamics, and mitochondrial function in disease stages of ATTRwt has not previously been studied but may provide new insights into the pathophysiology and clinical performance of the patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: The study investigated 47 patients diagnosed with ATTRwt at Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark. Patients were stratified according to the disease stages of the National Amyloidosis Centre (NAC) as NAC I with low levels of NT-proBNP (N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide) (NAC I-L, n=14), NAC I with high levels NT-proBNP (NAC I-H, n=20), and NAC II-III (n=13). Exercise testing with simultaneous right heart catheterization was performed in all patients. Endomyocardial biopsies were collected from the patients and the mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation capacity was assessed. All NAC disease groups, even in the NAC I-L group, a significant abnormal increase in biventricular filling pressures were noted during exercise while the filling pressures was normal or near normal at rest. The inotropic response to exercise was reduced with diminished increase in cardiac output which was significantly more pronounced in the NAC I-H (Diff. -2.4, 95% CI (-4.2: -0.7), P=0.00) and the NAC II-III group (Diff: -3.1 L/min, 95% CI (-5.2: -1.1), P=0.00) compared with the NAC I-L group. The pulmonary artery wedge pressure to cardiac output ratio at peak exercise was significantly different between NAC I-L and NAC II-III (Diff: 1.6 mm Hg*min/L, 95% CI (0.01:3.3, P=0.04)). Patients with ATTRwt had a reduced oxidative phosphorylation capacity which correlated to left ventricular mass but not to cardiac output capacity. CONCLUSIONS: An abnormal restrictive left ventricle and right ventricle response to exercise was demonstrated, even present in patients with early-stage ATTRwt. In more advanced disease stages a progressive impairment of the pressure-flow relationship was noted. The myocyte energetics is deranged but not associated to the contractile reserve or restrictive filling characteristics in ATTRwt.

RESUMEN El neumotórax espontáneo es una entidad poco frecuente, y es poco frecuente su asociación con los cambios electrocardiográficos. En estos casos, las anormalidades más frecuentes son la elevación del segmento ST, la inversión de la onda T y la pobre progresión de la onda R en derivaciones precordiales. Presentamos el caso de un varón de 25 años quien presentó un neumotórax espontáneo izquierdo, a su ingreso el paciente tuvo un electrocardiograma con infradesnivel en el segmento ST en derivaciones inferiores, hallazgos que resolvieron posterior al tratamiento del neumotórax con una toracotomía.


ABSTRACT Spontaneous pneumothorax is a rare entity, and its association with electrocardiographic changes is infrequent. In these cases, the most frequent abnormalities are ST-segment elevation, T-wave inversion and poor R wave progression in precordial leads. We present the case of a 25-year-old man who experienced a left spontaneous pneumothorax secondary to a subpleural bleb. Upon admission, his electrocardiogram revealed ST-segment depression in the inferior leads and aVF. These findings resolved following management of pneumothorax through thoracotomy.

La intoxicación por 3,4-metilendioximetanfetamina (MDMA), ha tenido un dramático resurgimiento desde 1980, se ha extendido por gran parte de los Estados Unidos, Europa y América, ha sido ampliamente utilizada como drogas con fines recreativos, actualmente Las catinonas sintéticas se venden como "euforizantes legales" para eludir las leyes existentes, lo que resulta en toxicidad grave y muertes. Presentamos un caso clínico de un adulto joven, quien debuto con intoxicación aguda severa MDMA, con falla multiorgánica, el cual se realizó atención y manejo agudo de la intoxicación en el servicio de urgencias, con posterior manejo de complicaciones en la unidad de cuidados intensivo y finalmente con sobrevida a pesar del mal pronóstico.

The hummingbird family (Trochilidae) includes the smallest and most metabolically active vertebrates. They have a high energy demand because of their extraordinarily high metabolic rates during hovering while looking for food. The morphology of the digestive apparatus is related to the feeding habits of the species. The anatomy and histology of the digestive apparatus in these birds have not been thoroughly described except for their tongue. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the gross anatomy and histology of the alimentary canal and adnexal glands in four species from the hummingbird family: Amazilia tzacatl (n = 2), Amazilia saucerottei (n = 1), Amazilia amabilis (n = 1) and Anthracothorax nigricollis (n = 1). The alimentary canal was found to be very short. The epithelium of the oesophagus and crop showed variable degrees of keratinization and parakeratotic areas as normal conditions. A dorsal crop was observed as a differential characteristic of these birds. Like other birds, the ventricular mucosa in hummingbirds was covered and protected by the cuticle and showed a tunica muscularis constituted by three muscle layers. There was no isthmus between the proventriculus and ventriculus. The intestine presents a well-differentiated duodenum and jejunum. However, no ileum nor caeca were identified. The intestinal villi length, base width, crypt depth and area showed differences among the specimens studied among the small and large intestines. In addition, variations in thickness were observed in the smooth muscle tunica along the intestine. In all the studied species, the liver was composed of two lobes (right and left), and no gall bladder was observed during gross inspection or in histological sections. Finally, the pancreas was observed as a diffused organ forming islets related to all the small intestines. Some anatomical differences were observed among the studied species, mainly concerning Anthracothorax nigricollis. Hummingbirds showed very interesting and distinctive morphological characteristics. Hummingbirds possess unique and intriguing morphological characteristics. Future comparative studies related to the anatomy, histology and function of the digestive apparatus of hummingbirds are required. Expanding our understanding of the digestive morphophysiology in these bird species is crucial. However, it is necessary to conduct more comprehensive studies encompassing a wider range of hummingbird species and including a larger number of individuals to obtain more conclusive findings.

BACKGROUND: Articular fractures of the base of the first metacarpal (Bennett fractures) have been studied for years to determine the best method of reduction and fixation. This study aims to show the application of the percutaneous reduction and internal fixation technique with cannulated screws and arthroscopic assistance in articular fractures of the base of the first metacarpal. METHODS: Descriptive cohort study in a series of 30 patients, the first cohort in our country and the largest series published so far, in which 8 patients presented with type 2A fracture and 19 patients with type 2B of the Torres-Becerra classification underwent the mentioned technique under direct vision and control of the articular reduction by arthroscopy evaluating the intraoperative characteristics of the articular surface, stability of de reduction and fixation. Assessment of functional and rehabilitation results with a minimum postoperative follow-up of 6 to 12 months. RESULTS: The senior author has used this technique with consistent clinical outcomes to improve reduction and fixation of intra-articular base fractures of first metacarpal bone (Bennett), reducing the articular step-off and gapping permitting an early rehabilitation progress with satisfactory functional results. CONCLUSIONS: We can suggest that this surgical method for the treatment of Bennett fractures may offer multiple advantages: adequate debridement of the trapeziometacarpal joint, direct visualization of the articular surface during reduction, achieving greater precision in fixation with minimum morbidity, imperceptible incisions and scars, shorter surgical time, and fewer associated complications.

Introducción: La criptococosis meníngea es una infección oportunista universal que presenta factores pronósticos variables, especialmente en pacientes inmunosuprimidos. Objetivo: Identificar variables clínicas y paraclínicas asociadas con el desenlace, al final de la hospitalización, en pacientes con criptococosis meníngea atendidos en un hospital de tercer nivel en Bogotá, Colombia. Materiales y métodos: Estudio observacional descriptivo. La información se obtuvo por medio de registros de historias clínicas de pacientes con diagnóstico confirmado de criptococosis meníngea durante el periodo 2016-2021. Resultados: Se analizaron 54 casos, el 85,2 % de ellos de sexo masculino, con una mediana de edad de 38 años. El síntoma principal fue cefalea (74,1 %), con un promedio de duración de 30 días antes del ingreso. El 83,3 % tenía diagnóstico de VIH, con niveles de CD4 por debajo de 50 células/mm3 y recuentos elevados de carga viral. El líquido cefalorraquídeo mostró en más del 50 % hipertensión intracraneal, pleocitosis de predominio linfocitario, hiperproteinorraquia e hipoglucorraquia. El tipo de patógeno aislado más frecuente fue C. neoformans var neoformans. Las variables más prevalentes en el grupo de pacientes que fallecieron fueron la presencia de pleocitosis en LCR (p = 0,025), cultivo para hongo positivo (p = 0,02) y aislamiento C. neoformans var neoformans (p = 0,03). Discusión: La criptococosis meníngea es una patología frecuente en hombres en la cuarta década de la vida y con infección por VIH, sin embargo, los factores relacionados con la mortalidad parecen variar dependiendo de la localización geográfica. Conclusión: En nuestro estudio los factores más prevalentes fueron la presencia de pleocitosis en LCR, cultivo positivo, aislamiento de C. neoformans var neoformans.


Introduction: Meningeal cryptococcosis is a universal opportunistic infection that presents variable prognostic factors, especially in immunosuppressed patients. Objective: To identify clinical and paraclinical variables associated with the outcome at the end of hospitalization in patients with meningeal cryptococcosis treated at a tertiary care hospital in Bogotá, Colombia. Materials and methods: Descriptive observational study. The information was obtained through records of medical records of patients with a confirmed diagnosis of meningeal cryptococcosis during the period 2016-2021. Results: 54 cases were analyzed. 85,2 % men, with a median age of 38 years. The main symptom was headache (74,1 %), with an average duration of 30 days prior to admission. 83,3 % had a diagnosis of HIV, with CD4 levels below 50 cell/mm3 and high viral load counts. The cerebrospinal fluid showed in more than 50 % intracranial hypertension, pleocytosis of lymphocyte predominance, hyperprotein- orrhachia and hypoglycorrhachia. The most frequent type of pathogen isolated was C. neoformans var neoformans. And the most prevalent variables in the group of patients who died were the presence of pleocytosis in CSF (p = 0,025), culture for positive fungus (p = 0,02) and isolation of C. neoformans var neoformans (p = 0,03). Discussion: Meningeal cryptococcosis is a frequent pathology in men, in the fourth decade of life and with HIV infection, however, the factors related to mortality seem to vary depending on the geographical location. Conclusion: In our study, the most prevalent factors were the presence of pleocytosis in CSF, positive culture, isolation of C. neoformans var neoformans.

INTRODUCTION: Fractures in children and adolescents are a public health issue. However, reliable epidemiological descriptions of the South American population must be improved. This study aims to present epidemiological data on fractures from a children's orthopedic hospital in one of the five largest cities in Latin America. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Descriptive epidemiological data from 2015 to 2019 were used to characterize children's fractures. Demographic variables, the number of fractured bones, high-energy trauma findings, fracture characteristics, fingertip injuries, and associated complications discriminated by the type of treatment are presented. Long bone fractures were classified according to the AO classification. All children less than 18 years of age were included. RESULTS: In a population of 3,616 children, 4,596 fractures were identified. More boys than girls sustain a fractured bone, with ratios as high as 6:1 around 15 years old. Distal forearm fractures were the most common (31.9%), followed by distal humerus (20.2%). Most of the complications were related to these two sites of fractures. The OR of complications between surgical and conservative management was 2.86. CONCLUSION: Epidemiological data of fractures from the authors' institution display the usual trending reported in most populations. Gender-related and age-related differences were relevant. Most fractures and complications are related to upper limb low-energy trauma. The most frequent are loss of ROM and loss of reduction. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level III - retrospective cohort study.

AIM: The current study aimed to develop enzyme-activated charge-reversal lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) as novel gene delivery systems. METHODS: Palmitic acid was covalently bound to protamine being utilised as transfection promoter to anchor it on the surfaces of LNPs. Green fluorescent protein (GFP) encoding plasmid DNA (pDNA) was ion paired with various cationic counter ions to achieve high encapsulation in LNPs. Protamine-decorated LNPs were prepared by solvent injection method followed by coating with sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) to generate a bio-inert anionic outer surface. Resulting LNPs were characterised regarding size, polydispersity, zeta potential and encapsulation efficiency. Enzyme-triggered charge-reversal of LNPs was investigated using isolated alkaline phosphatase (ALP) monitoring changes in zeta potential as well as monophosphate release. Furthermore, monophosphate release, cell viability and transfection efficiency were evaluated on a human alveolar epithelial (A549) cell line. RESULTS: Protamine-decorated and TPP-coated (Prot-pDNA/DcChol-TPP) LNPs displayed a mean size of 298.8 ± 17.4 nm and a zeta potential of -13.70 ± 0.61 mV. High pDNA encapsulation was achieved with hydrophobic ion pairs of pDNA with 3ß-[N-(N',N'-dimethylaminoethane)-carbamoyl]cholesterol hydrochloride (DcChol). Zeta potential of Prot-pDNA/DcChol-TPP LNPs reversed to positive values with a total Δ26.8 mV shift upon incubation with ALP. Conformably, a notable amount of monophosphate was released upon incubation of Prot-pDNA/DcChol-TPP LNPs with isolated as well as cell-associated ALP. A549 cells well tolerated LNPs displaying more than 95 % viability. Compared with naked pDNA, unmodified LNPs and control LNPs, Prot-pDNA/DcChol-TPP LNPs showed a significantly increased transfection efficiency. CONCLUSION: Prot-pDNA/DcChol-TPP LNPs can be regarded as promising gene delivery systems.

Below the Arctic sea ice, under the right conditions, a flux of icy brine flows down into the sea. The icy brine has a much lower fusion point and is denser than normal seawater. As a result, it sinks while freezing everything around it, forming an ice channel called a brinicle (also known as ice stalactite). In this paper, we develop a mathematical model for this phenomenon, assuming cylindrical symmetry. The fluid is considered to be viscous and quasi-stationary. The heat and salt transport are weakly coupled to the fluid motion and are modelled with the corresponding conservation equations, accounting for diffusive and convective effects. Finite-element discretization is employed to solve the coupled system of partial differential equations. We find that the model can capture the general behaviour of the physical system and generate brinicle-like structures while also recovering dendrite composition, which is a physically expected feature aligned with previous experimental results. This represents, to our knowledge, the first complete model proposed that captures the global structure of the physical phenomenon even though it has some discrepancies, such as brine accumulation.

Temperature is an essential oceanographic variable (EOV) that still today remains coarsely resolved below the surface and near the seafloor. Here, we gather evidence to confirm that Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technology can convert tens of kilometer-long seafloor fiber-optic telecommunication cables into dense arrays of temperature anomaly sensors having millikelvin (mK) sensitivity, thus allowing to monitor oceanic processes such as internal waves and upwelling with unprecedented detail. Notably, we report high-resolution observations of highly coherent near-inertial and super-inertial internal waves in the NW Mediterranean sea, offshore of Toulon, France, having spatial extents of a few kilometers and producing maximum thermal anomalies of more than 5 K at maximum absolute rates of more than 1 K/h. We validate our observations with in-situ oceanographic sensors and an alternative optical fiber sensing technology. Currently, DAS only provides temperature changes estimates, however practical solutions are outlined to obtain continuous absolute temperature measurements with DAS at the seafloor. Our observations grant key advantages to DAS over established temperature sensors, showing its transformative potential for the description of seafloor temperature fluctuations over an extended range of spatial and temporal scales, as well as for the understanding of the evolution of the ocean in a broad sense (e.g. physical and ecological). Diverse ocean-oriented fields could benefit from the potential applications of this fast-developing technology.

Introduction: Proteolytic processing of amyloid protein precursor by ß-site secretase enzyme (BACE1) is dependent on the cellular lipid composition and is affected by endomembrane trafficking in dementia and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 (SCD1) is responsible for the synthesis of fatty acid monounsaturation (MUFAs), whose accumulation is strongly associated with cognitive dysfunction. Methods: In this study, we analyzed the relationship between BACE1 and SCD1 in vivo and in vitro neurodegenerative models and their association in familial AD (FAD), sporadic AD (SAD), and cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) using microscopy, biochemical, and mass SPECT approach. Results: Our findings showed that BACE1 and SCD1 immunoreactivities were increased and colocalized in astrocytes of the hippocampus in a rat model of global cerebral ischemia (2-VO). A synergistic effect of double BACE1/SCD1 silencing on the recovery of motor and cognitive functions was obtained. This neuroprotective regulation involved the segregation of phospholipids (PLs) associated with polyunsaturated fatty acids in the hippocampus, cerebrospinal fluid, and serum. The double silencing in the sham and ischemic groups was stronger in the serum, inducing an inverse ratio between total phosphatydilcholine (PC) and lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), represented mainly by the reduction of PC 38:4 and PC 36:4 and an increase in LPC 16:0 and LPC 18:0. Furthermore, PC 38:4 and PC:36:4 levels augmented in pathological conditions in in vitro AD models. BACE1 and SCD1 increases were confirmed in the hippocampus of FAD, SAD, and CADASIL. Conclusion: Therefore, the findings suggest a novel convergence of BACE-1 and SCD1 in neurodegeneration, related to pro-inflammatory phospholipids.

RESUMEN

Gallstone ileus manifests as intestinal obstruction. It occurs due to the passage of a stone and its subsequent lodging in the lumen of the digestive tract. The diagnosis is confirmed by imaging; the gold standard is abdominal tomography. Management is based on the extraction of the intraluminal calculus in one or more surgical times, depending on the patient's condition. We present the case of a patient with multiple comorbidities who showed a picture of cholangitis complicated by gallstone ileus and successfully treated with enterolithotomy. Surgical management is controversial since the optimal approach for these patients has not been established.


El íleo biliar se manifiesta como una obstrucción intestinal, se presenta por el paso de un lito y su posterior alojamiento en el lumen del tubo digestivo. El diagnóstico se confirma mediante imagenología, el patrón de oro es la tomografía abdominal. El manejo se fundamenta en la extracción del cálculo intraluminal en uno o más tiempos quirúrgicos, según el estado del paciente. Se presenta el caso de un paciente con múltiples comorbilidades, que debuta con un cuadro de colangitis complicada por íleo biliar, tratado exitosamente con enterolitotomía. El manejo quirúrgico es controversial, ya que no se ha establecido el abordaje óptimo para estos pacientes.

Currently, cannabis is considered an attractive option for the treatment of various diseases, including pain management. Thus, developing new analgesics is paramount for improving the health of people suffering from chronic pain. Safer natural derivatives such as cannabidiol (CBD) have shown excellent potential for the treatment of these diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the analgesic effect of a CBD-rich cannabis extract (CE) encapsulated in polymeric micelles (CBD/PMs) using different pain models. The PEG-PCL polymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography and 1H-NMR spectroscopy. PMs were prepared by solvent evaporation and characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy. The analgesic activity of CBD/PMs and nonencapsulated CE rich in CBD (CE/CBD) was evaluated using mouse thermal, chemical, and mechanical pain models. The acute toxicity of the encapsulated CE was determined by oral administration in mice at a dose of 20 mg/kg for 14 days. The release of CBD from the nanoparticles was assessed in vitro using a dialysis experiment. CBD/PMs with an average hydrodynamic diameter of 63.8 nm obtained from a biocompatible polyethylene glycol-block-polycaprolactone copolymer were used as nanocarriers for the extract formulations with 9.2% CBD content, which corresponded with a high encapsulation efficiency of 99.9%. The results of the pharmacological assays indicated that orally administered CBD/PMs were safe and exerted a better analgesic effect than CE/CBD. The micelle formulation had a significant analgesic effect in a chemical pain model, reaching a percentage of analgesia of 42%. CE was successfully encapsulated in a nanocarrier, providing better stability. Moreover, it proved to be more efficient as a carrier for CBD release. The analgesic activity of CBD/PMs was higher than that of free CE, implying that encapsulation is an efficient strategy for improving stability and functionality. In conclusion, CBD/PMs could be promising therapeutics for pain management in the future.

Sexual reversal methods are commonly used in plant breeding programs, allowing male flowers from female plants or vice versa. This work evaluated sexual reversal methods in female Cannabis plants and their effect on gas exchange activity. Plants treated with 1, methyl-cyclopropene (1-MCP), and aminoetoxyvinylglycine (AVG) showed differences in net photosynthesis (A) and stomatal conductance (gs) between the periods before and after sexual reversal treatments. Quantum yield (Qy), electron transport rate (ETR), and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) did not show a relationship to the treatments, an increase in Qy and ETR, and a reduction in NPQ were observed after applying treatments. 1-MCP, AVG, and STS (silver thiosulfate) were effective in sexual reversal, while photoperiod changes did not induce the formation of male flowers. Induction of sexual reversion in Cannabis plants did not generate variations in energy dissipation mechanisms through photosystems.


Los métodos de reversión sexual se utilizan comúnmente en los programas de fitomejoramiento, permitiendo la formación de flores masculinas a partir de plantas femeninas y viceversa. Este trabajo tuvo como objetivo evaluar métodos de reversión sexual en plantas femeninas de Cannabis y su efecto sobre el intercambio de gases. Plantas tratadas con 1-metil-ciclopropano (1-MCP) y aminoetoxivinilglicina (AVG) mostraron diferencias en fotosíntesis neta (A) y conductancia estomática (gs) entre los periodos antes y después de los tratamientos de reversión sexual. El rendimiento cuántico (Qy), la tasa de transporte de electrones (ETR) y la disipación no fotoquímica (NPQ) no mostraron relación con los tratamientos, se observó un incremento en Qy y ETR y una reducción en NPQ después de la aplicación de los tratamientos. 1-MCP, AVG y STS (tiosulfato de plata) fueron efectivos en la reversión sexual, mientras que los cambios en el fotoperiodo no indujeron la formación de flores masculinas. La inducción de la reversión sexual en plantas de Cannabis no generó variaciones en los mecanismos que disipan la energía a través de los fotosistemas.

Introduction: Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease diagnosed in a productive stage of life. Patients with RA experience changes in their musculoskeletal system, overall health and quality of life. It has been identified that patients with RA do not have appropriate knowledge about their condition. Educational programs can provide new knowledge, accompaniment, and closer follow-up to improve empowerment and quality of life in patients with RA. Purpose: To describe rheumatoid arthritis patients' experiences, perceptions, and expectations when enrolling on a multicomponent educational program in a specialized RA setting. Patients and Methods: A qualitative study was done. Patients with RA who attended a specialized center and enrolled in an educational program participated in two focus groups. The focus group discussions and the interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, analyzed, and emerging themes were constructed. Results: Thirty-one participants were included in the focus groups. The median age was 60 years IQR (54-67), 92% were female. Two relevant categories emerged: first, the experience of being diagnosed with RA. Second, the program's ability to empower participants with knowledge and the possibility of transferring knowledge to other patients with the same condition. In addition, patients gave a high score to the expectations regarding the educational program. Conclusion: Understanding patients' expectations when enrolling in an educational program allows educators and clinicians to understand their motivations to create tailored programs that can contribute to acquiring empowerment in the educational process and managing their disease. Stakeholders should consider patients' expectations when implementing these interventions for patients with RA to adapt the intervention according to the patient's context and needs, which will directly affect the patient's adherence and lead to better use and allocation of resources for educational activities.
