RESUMEN

Introduction of controllable deformations into periodic materials that lead to disclinations in their structure opens novel routes for construction of higher-order topological insulators hosting topological states at disclinations. Appearance of these topological states is consistent with the bulk-disclination correspondence principle, and is due to the filling anomaly that results in fractional charges to the boundary unit cells. So far, topological disclination states were observed only in the linear regime, while the interplay between nonlinearity and topology in the systems with disclinations has been never studied experimentally. We report here on the experimental observation of the nonlinear photonic disclination states in waveguide arrays with pentagonal or heptagonal disclination cores inscribed in transparent optical medium using the fs-laser writing technique. The transition between nontopological and topological phases in such structures is controlled by the Kekulé distortion coefficient r with topological phase hosting simultaneously disclination states at the inner disclination core and spatially separated from them corner-I, corner-II, and extended edge states at the outer edge of the structure. We show that the robust nonlinear disclination states bifurcate from their linear counterparts and that location of their propagation constants in the gap and, hence, their spatial localization can be controlled by their power. Nonlinear disclination states can be efficiently excited by Gaussian input beams, but only if they are focused into the waveguides belonging to the disclination core, where such topological states reside. Our results open new prospects for investigation of nonlinear effects in topological systems with disclinations and are relevant for different areas of science, including Bose-Einstein and polariton condensates, where potentials with the disclinations can be created.

Floquet systems with periodically varying in time parameters enable realization of unconventional topological phases that do not exist in static systems with constant parameters and that are frequently accompanied by appearance of novel types of the topological states. Among such Floquet systems are the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattices with periodically-modulated couplings that can support at their edges anomalous π modes of topological origin despite the fact that the lattice spends only half of the evolution period in topologically nontrivial phase, while during other half-period it is topologically trivial. Here, using Su-Schrieffer-Heeger arrays composed from periodically oscillating waveguides inscribed in transparent nonlinear optical medium, we report experimental observation of photonic anomalous π modes residing at the edge or in the corner of the one- or two-dimensional arrays, respectively, and demonstrate a new class of topological π solitons bifurcating from such modes in the topological gap of the Floquet spectrum at high powers. π solitons reported here are strongly oscillating nonlinear Floquet states exactly reproducing their profiles after each longitudinal period of the structure. They can be dynamically stable in both one- and two-dimensional oscillating waveguide arrays, the latter ones representing the first realization of the Floquet photonic higher-order topological insulator, while localization properties of such π solitons are determined by their power.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is diagnosed many years after its onset, under a significant degradation of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic system, responsible for the regulation of motor function. This explains the low effectiveness of the treatment of patients. Therefore, one of the highest priorities in neurology is the development of the early (preclinical) diagnosis of PD. The aim of this study was to search for changes in the blood of patients at risk of developing PD, which are considered potential diagnostic biomarkers. Out of 1835 patients, 26 patients were included in the risk group and 20 patients in the control group. The primary criteria for inclusion in a risk group were the impairment of sleep behavior disorder and sense of smell, and the secondary criteria were neurological and mental disorders. In patients at risk and in controls, the composition of plasma and the expression of genes of interest in lymphocytes were assessed by 27 indicators. The main changes that we found in plasma include a decrease in the concentrations of l-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) and urates, as well as the expressions of some types of microRNA, and an increase in the total oxidative status. In turn, in the lymphocytes of patients at risk, an increase in the expression of the DA D3 receptor gene and the lymphocyte activation gene 3 (LAG3), as well as a decrease in the expression of the Protein deglycase DJ-1 gene (PARK7), were observed. The blood changes we found in patients at risk are considered candidates for diagnostic biomarkers at the prodromal stage of PD.

RESUMEN

We study temporal correlations of interfering quasi-thermal fields, obtained by scattering laser radiation on a rotating ground glass disk. We show that the Doppler effect causes oscillations in the temporal cross correlation function. Furthermore, we propose how to use Hong-Ou-Mandel interference of quasi-thermal fields in the time domain to characterize linear optical circuits.

The advanced tendencies in building materials development are related to the design of cement composites with a reduced amount of Portland cement, contributing to reduced CO2 emissions, sustainable development of used non-renewal raw materials, and decreased energy consumption. This work deals with water cured for 28 and 120 days cement composites: Sample A-reference (white Portland cement + sand + water); Sample B-white Portland cement + marble powder + water; and Sample C white Portland cement + marble powder + polycarboxylate-based water reducer + water. By powder X-ray diffraction and FTIR spectroscopy, the redistribution of CO32-, SO42-, SiO44-, AlO45-, and OH- (as O-H bond in structural OH- anions and O-H bond belonging to crystal bonded water molecules) from raw minerals to newly formed minerals have been studied, and the scheme of samples hydration has been defined. By thermal analysis, the ranges of the sample's decomposition mechanisms were distinct: dehydration, dehydroxylation, decarbonation, and desulphuration. Using mass spectroscopic analysis of evolving gases during thermal analysis, the reaction mechanism of samples thermal decomposition has been determined. These results have both practical (architecture and construction) and fundamental (study of archaeological artifacts as ancient mortars) applications.

Cerium dioxide nanoparticles have a special place among engineered nanomaterials due to the wide range of their enzyme-like activities. They possess SOD-, catalase- and peroxidase-like properties, as well as recently discovered phosphatase-, photolyase-, phospholipase- and nuclease-like properties. Advancing biomedical applications of CeO2-based nanozymes requires an understanding of the features and mechanisms of the redox activity of CeO2 nanoparticles when entering the vascular bed, especially when interacting with lipid-protein supramolecular complexes (biomembranes and lipoproteins). In this paper, CeO2 nanoparticles are shown to possess two further types of nanozyme activity, namely lipo- and phospholipoperoxidase-like activities. Compared to a strong blood prooxidant, hemoglobin, CeO2 nanoparticles act as a mild oxidising agent, since they exhibit a 106 times lower, and 20 times lower, prooxidant capacity towards linoleic acid and phosphatidylcholine hydroperoxides, respectively. Compared to the widespread pharmacological preparation of iron, Fe(iii) carboxymaltose (antianemic preparation Ferinject®), the prooxidant capacity of CeO2 nanoparticles towards lipid and phospholipid substrates has been shown to be 102 times lower, and 4 times higher, respectively. The data obtained on the mechanism of the interaction of nanodisperse CeO2 with the main components of biological membranes, lipids and phospholipids enable the substantial expansion of the scope of biomedical applications of CeO2 nanozymes.

Ion-doped crystal-based compact devices capable of beam splitting and coupling are enthralling for a broad range of classical and quantum integrated photonics applications. In this work, we report on the fabrication of depressed-cladding waveguide 2D 2 × 2, 1 × 2 and 3D 3 × 3 directional couplers in Tm 3 + :YAG crystal by femtosecond laser writing. The performances of the couplers are characterized at 810 nm, showing single-mode guidance, polarization independence, finely matched splitting ratios. These results open up new opportunities in the beneficial fabrication of 3D circuits and devices in crystals.

Charge state studies of compounds [Mo3S4(tu)8(H2O)]Cl4·4H2O (1), [Mo3S4Cl3(dbbpy)3]Cl·5H2O (2), [Mo3S4(CuCl)Cl3(dbbpy)3][CuCl2] (3), containing {Mo3S4}4+ and {Mo3CuS4}5+ cluster cores bearing terminal thiourea (tu) or 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine (dbbpy) ligands, have been performed by X-ray photoelectron and X-ray emission spectroscopies combined with quantum chemical calculations. The best agreement between theory and experiments has been obtained using the B3LYP method. According to the experimental and calculated data, the Mo atoms are in the oxidation state 4+ for all compounds. The energies and shapes of the Cu2p lines indicate formal oxidation states of Cu as 1+. The coordination of Сu(I) to the cluster {Mo3S4} in 3 does not lead to significant changes in the charge state of the molybdenum atoms and the {Mo3S4} unit can be considered as a tridentate metallothia crown ether.

BACKGROUND: To assess the impact of obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) on prognosis and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in relation to other major cardiovascular risk factors. MATERIAL/METHODS: This prospective study recruited 234 patients from an out-patient clinic. Based on the Berlin questionnaire, 147 patients (90 males, mean age 52.1 ± 10.4 years) with highly suspected sleep breathing disorders were included in the study. Based on cardiorespiratory monitoring, patients were divided into 2 groups: 42 patients without sleep breathing disorders (SBD), and 105 patients with OSAHS. Among these, 12 patients started CPAP therapy and formed the third group. RESULTS: The mean follow-up period was 46.4 ± 14.3 months. Event-free survival was lowest in the untreated OSAHS patients (log rank test 6.732, p = 0.035). In the non-adjusted regression model, OSAHS was also associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular events (OR = 8.557, 95% CI 1.142-64.131, p = 0.037). OSAHS patients demonstrated higher rates of hospitalization compared to the control group without SBD (OR 2.750, 95%CI 1.100-6.873, p = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS: OSAHS hypertensive patients, and in particular, according to our model, patients with severe OSAHS (AHI ≥ 30/h), are at higher risk of fatal and non-fatal cardiovascular events. Moreover, untreated OSAHS patients demonstrate higher rates of hospitalization caused by the onset or deterioration of cardiovascular disease.

The interaction of Al2O3 and CeO2 thin films with sulfur dioxide (2.5 mbar) or with mixtures of SO2 with O2 (5 mbar) at various temperatures (30-400 degrees C) was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The analysis of temperature-induced transformations of S2p spectra allowed us to identify sulfite and sulfate species and determine the conditions of their formation on the oxide surfaces. Sulfite ions, SO3(2-), which are characterized by the S2p(3/2) binding energy (BE) of approximately 167.5 eV, were shown to be formed during the interaction of the oxide films with pure SO2 at temperatures < or =200 degrees C, whereas sulfate ions, SO4(2-), with BE (S2p(3/2)) approximately 169 eV were produced at temperatures > or =300 degrees C. The formation of both the sulfite and sulfate species proceeds more efficiently in the case of CeO2. The addition of oxygen to SO2 suppresses the formation of the sulfite species on both oxides and facilitates the formation of the sulfate species. Again, this enhancement is more significant for the CeO2 film than for the Al2O3 one. The sulfation of the CeO2 film is accompanied by a reduction of Ce(IV) ions to Ce(III) ones, both in the absence and in the presence of oxygen. It has been concluded that the amount of the sulfates on the CeO2 surface treated with the SO2 + O2 mixture at > or =300 degrees C corresponds to the formation of a 3D phase of the Ce(III) sulfate. The sulfation of Al2O3 is limited by the surface of the oxide film.
