RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To verify if assessment of the danger zone (DZ) in the mesial root of mandibular molars is affected by field of view (FOV) and voxel sizes in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. STUDY DESIGN: Forty mandibular molars were scanned by micro-computed tomography, creating the reference standard. The teeth were then submitted for CBCT scans with FOVs of 10 × 5.5 cm and 5 × 5.5 cm and voxel sizes of 0.4, 0.2, 0.15, and 0.075 mm3. The smallest dentin thickness in the DZ from the mesiobuccal and mesiolingual canals was measured at 2, 4, and 6 mm apical to the root furcation. Descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, and intraclass correlation coefficients were used for statistical analysis with significance established at P < .05. RESULTS: All CBCT measurements overestimated the DZ dentin thickness (P < .001) compared to the reference standard. The greatest overestimation occurred in the 5 × 5.5 cm FOV with 0.4 mm3 voxels (P = .007). Dentin thickness measured with the 5 × 5.5 cm FOV and 0.075 mm3 voxels was significantly smaller and produced the best ICC value with the reference standard (0.936). CONCLUSIONS: CBCT overestimates the dentin thickness of the DZ regardless of FOV and voxel sizes. The 5 × 5.5 cm FOV showed the best performance with the 0.075 mm3 voxel size, but it performed poorly with 0.4 mm3 voxels.

BACKGROUND: In patients with periodontal disease, various symptoms are observed along with inflammation. The impact of local and systemic inflammation on periodontal tissue is well-known; however, the impact of periodontal disease on the individual's quality of life is unclear. This study aimed to assess oral health-related and general health-related quality of life in patients undergoing maintenance treatment following treatment for periodontitis (RP-CPH), patients with gingivitis (G) and patients with Stage I periodontitis (SI-P) and to compare this with individuals with clinical periodontal health (IP-CPH). METHOD: This study was comprised of cross-sectional periodontal assessment along with questionnaires. Oral health-related quality of life and general health-related quality of life were assessed using, respectively, the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) and Short-Form-36 (SF-36) questionnaires. Study participants were classified according to the classification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions established by the 2017 World Workshop. RESULTS: The OHIP-14 total scores for the 166 study participants (age range: 22-57) of the G (11.61 ± 3.21) and SI-P (13.03 ± 3.47) groups were significantly higher than the OHIP-14 total scores of the IP-CPH (1.09 ± 1.58) and RP-CPH (2.95 ± 2.58) groups. SF-36 scores were found to be significantly lower in the SI-P group in all subgroups compared to the G and IP-CPH groups. CONCLUSIONS: A correlation was found between early-stage periodontal disease and low levels of OHRQoL and GHRQoL. The health of periodontal tissues may have a positive effect on the quality of life.

Today, with rapid advances in technology, computer-based studies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) approaches are finding their place in every field, especially in the medical sector, where they attract great attention. The Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) stands as the most intricate joint within the human body, and diseases related to this joint are quite common. In this paper, we reviewed studies that utilize AI-based algorithms and computer-aided programs for investigating TMJ and TMJ-related diseases. We conducted a literature search on Google Scholar, Web of Science, and PubMed without any time constraints and exclusively selected English articles. Moreover, we examined the references to papers directly related to the topic matter. As a consequence of the survey, a total of 66 articles within the defined scope were assessed. These selected papers were distributed across various areas, with 11 focusing on segmentation, 3 on Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA), 10 on TMJ Osteoarthritis (OA), 21 on Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD), 6 on decision support systems, 10 reviews, and 5 on sound studies. The observed trend indicates a growing interest in artificial intelligence algorithms, suggesting that the number of studies in this field will likely continue to expand in the future.

Pulp canal obliteration (PCO) is a significant complication in endodontics that can occur due to various factors. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a useful diagnostic tool for identifying root canal anatomy and variations, and guided endodontics is emerging as an alternative treatment solution for teeth with partially or entirely obliterated pulpal canals. However, the accuracy of CBCT-guided 3D-printed guides on different materials and layer thicknesses is not well understood. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of guides prepared using CBCT images on 3D-printed teeth with stereolithography (SLA) using three different materials and two different layer thicknesses. This study found that 3D-printed guides were accurate and reliable for accessing 3D-manufactured obliterated teeth and reaching the apical area. No significant differences in distance or angle measurements were found when different guide materials were used, suggesting that materials can be selected based on availability and cost. These findings contribute to the knowledge base regarding the effectiveness of 3D printing technology in guided endodontics and can help to identify the most suitable materials and techniques for this application.

This literature review was conducted to analyze the capability of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to accurately identify low bone mass density in women. A systematic search of MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Google Scholar, the Cochrane Library, and Science Direct was performed to identify relevant articles, and the Cochrane risk of bias criterion was used to determine the methodological quality of the included studies. All ten included studies assessed primary research on the capacity of CBCT to accurately diagnose insufficient bone mineral density. All relevant data were extracted, and the results were summarized narratively. The results indicated that the CBCT has good sensitivity and specificity and high accuracy in predicting osteoporosis. Four of the included studies measured qualitative values, while the others concentrated on quantitative values and found lower values in osteoporosis patients compared to those of osteopenic and healthy patients. All the studies compared CBCT grayscale values with dual energy X-ray absorptiometry scores, which strengthened our confidence in the accuracy of CBCT's diagnostic capability. CBCT is considered a feasible predictive tool for detecting patients who are at risk of osteoporosis, although further research is needed to confirm the evidence and enhance its common use among health care professionals.

The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic performance of clinical visual examination (ICDAS II), digital periapical radiography (PR), near infrared light transillumination (NIR-LT), and laser fluorescence (LF) to microcomputed tomography (Micro-CT) which is the reference standard for the detection of non-cavitated occlusal enamel and dentin caries in third molar teeth. Potential participants were consecutively recruited. In this prospective study, 101 third molars of 101 patients were examined; the molars had non-cavitated occlusal caries which required extraction. ICDAS II, PR, NIR-LT and LF examinations were carried out by two blinded examiners. Reference standard was determined by micro-CT imaging seven days after extraction. Accuracy rate, sensitivity, specificity, predictive values and areas under receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves (Az) were statistically analyzed. Nonparametric variables were subjected to the Kruskal−Wallis Test. Significance level was set as p < 0.05. NIR-LT had the highest sensitivity (99.67−99.67%) and accuracy (78.22−77.23%) for the determination of occlusal enamel caries according to examiners 1 and 2, respectively. LF method had the highest sensitivity (70.83−54.17%) and accuracy (66.34−59.41%) for determining occlusal dentin caries according to examiners 1 and 2, respectively. The ROC curve (Az) value ranged between 0.524 and 0.726 for the different methods tested. Most effective methods for the diagnosis of occlusal enamel and dentin caries were determined to be NIR-LT and LF pen methods, respectively. The present prospective clinical study showed that NIR-LT and LF-Pen were a reliable modality for the detection of occlusal enamel and dentin caries without ionizing radiation.

OBJECTIVE: To compare volume and surface area measurements of the lateral pterygoid (LPM), medial pterygoid (MPM), and masseter muscles (MM) as calculated on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) based on the position of the temporomandibular joint disk, mouth position, and patient sex, and to calculate the correlations of the measurements among the muscles. STUDY DESIGN: Measurements of muscle volume and area were performed on the MRIs of 51 patients. Wilcoxon, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney U tests were used to calculate the significance of differences in measurements. The Spearman correlation coefficient calculated the correlation of measurements among the muscles. The significance of difference was established at P < .05. RESULTS: Volume and area of the left MPM in patients with disk displacement without reduction (DDWOR) were larger than in patients with normal disk position (P ≤ .040). MM volumes were smaller with DDWOR than with DD with reduction bilaterally (P ≤ .031). The volume and area of LPM and MM were significantly different between closed and open mouth positions (P < .001). Differences in volume and area between females and males were significant for all muscles in volume (P ≤ .021) and for MPM and MM in area (P ≤ .021). Significant positive correlations were found among all muscles for volume and area. CONCLUSION: Volume and area measurements of the masticatory muscles varied according to disk and mouth position and patient sex and exhibited significant positive correlations.

Purpose: In the context of COVID-19, studies evaluating the adherence of dentists and dental students to infection control are relevant due to their high occupational exposure and risk, as well as their responsibility for disseminating information and good practices. This study evaluated the adherence of dentists and dental students to infection control in the oral radiology field in the setting of the COVID-19 pandemic on different continents. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional observational study involved individuals who performed intraoral radiographic examinations during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Questionnaire on Infection Control in Oral Radiology was administered virtually using a Google Form. Participants from different continents (the Americas, Africa, Europe, Asia, and Oceania) were recruited. Data were subjected to descriptive analysis and simple and multiple binary regression (5%). Results: There were 582 valid answers, and 68.73% of the participants were from the Americas, 18.90% from Europe, and 12.37% from Asia. The median score for infection control protocols was 94 points for dental students and 104 points for dentists, and participants below the median were considered to have low adherence to infection control in oral radiology. Low access to infection control was found for 53.0% of dentists in the Americas, 34.0% from Europe, and 26.9% from Asia. Conclusion: The adherence to infection control protocols in oral radiology was low even in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. The results may help improve the awareness of students and professionals, since oral radiology routines have the potential for transmitting COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: During oral rehabilitation, dental implants in the posterior maxilla can penetrate the maxillary sinus. The aim was to evaluate the presence of maxillary sinus abnormalities in patients with dental implants in the posterior maxillary region using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study, and CBCT scans of 199 patients (459 dental implants) were evaluated. Implants were assessed according to their relative location to the maxillary sinus floor (up to 2 mm from the maxillary sinus cortex, within 2 mm to intimate contact with the maxillary sinus cortex, apical third inside the maxillary sinus, two-thirds or more inside the maxillary sinus) and bone-fixation tissue (Alveolar ridge or Bone graft). Maxillary sinus abnormalities were classified. Kappa and Weighted Kappa and the Kruskal-Wallis test were applied. RESULTS: A higher prevalence of mucosal thickening and non-specific opacification were observed in implants located within 2 mm to intimate contact with the cortex of the maxillary sinus floor. Of the 66 implants with apical thirds located inside the maxillary sinus, 31 (46.7%) were associated with sinus abnormalities and of all implants (n = 5) with two-thirds or more located inside the maxillary sinus, all of these were associated with sinus abnormalities. No association was observed in relation to implant bone-fixation tissue. CONCLUSIONS: This study found a significant association between dental implant placement near or within the sinus and sinus abnormalities, mainly mucosal thickening and non-specific opacification.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) images obtained using different voxel sizes in measuring trabecular bone microstructure in comparison to micro-CT. Materials and Methods: Twelve human skull bones containing posterior-mandibular alveolar bone regions were analyzed. CBCT images were obtained at voxel sizes of 0.075 mm (high: HI) and 0.2 mm (standard: Std), while micro-CT imaging used voxel sizes of 0.06 mm (HI) and 0.12 mm (Std). Analyses were performed using CTAn software with the standardized automatic global threshold method. Intraclass correlation coefficients were used to evaluate the consistency and agreement of paired measurements for bone volume (BV), percent bone volume (BV/TV), bone surface (BS), trabecular thickness (TbTh), trabecular separation (TbSp), trabecular number (TbN), trabecular pattern factor (TbPf), and structure model index (SMI). Results: When compared to micro-CT, CBCT images had higher BV, BV/TV, and TbTh values, while micro-CT images had lower BS, TbSp, TbN, TbPf, and SMI values (P<0.05). The BV, BV/BT, TbTh, and TbSp variables were higher with Std voxels, whereas the BS, TbPf, and SMI variables were higher with HI voxels for both imaging methods. For each imaging modality and voxel size evaluated, BV, BS, and TbTh were significantly different (P<0.05). TbN, TbPf, and SMI showed statistically significant differences between imaging methods (P<0.05). The consistency and absolute agreement between micro-CT and CBCT were excellent for all variables. Conclusion: This study demonstrated the potential of high-resolution CBCT imaging for quantitative bone morphometry assessment.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionize healthcare and dentistry. Recently, there has been much interest in the development of AI applications. Dentomaxillofacial radiology (DMFR) is within the scope of these applications due to its compatibility with image processing methods. Classification and segmentation of teeth, automatic marking of anatomical structures and cephalometric analysis, determination of early dental diseases, gingival, periodontal diseases and evaluation of risk groups, diagnosis of certain diseases, such as; osteoporosis that can be detected in jaw radiographs are among studies conducted by using radiological images. Further research in the field of AI will make great contributions to DMFR. We aim to discuss most recent AI-based studies in the field of DMFR.

Purpose: This study compared the effectiveness of complementary metal-oxide semiconductors (CMOS) and photostimulable phosphor (PSP) plates as intraoral imaging systems in terms of time efficacy, patient comfort, and subjective image quality assessment in real clinical settings. Materials and Methods: Fifty-eight patients (25 women and 33 men) were included. Patients were referred for a full-mouth radiological examination including 1 bitewing radiograph (left and right) and 8 periapical radiographs for each side (left maxilla/mandible and right maxilla/mandible). For each patient, 1 side of the dental arch was radiographed using a CMOS detector, whereas the other side was radiographed using a PSP detector, ensuring an equal number of left and right arches imaged by each detector. Clinical application time, comfort/pain, and subjective image quality were assessed for each detector. Continuous variables were summarized as mean±standard deviation. Differences between detectors were evaluated using repeated-measures analysis of variance. P<0.05 was accepted as significant. Results: The mean total time required for all imaging procedures with the CMOS detector was significantly lower than the mean total time required for imaging procedures with PSP (P<0.05). The overall mean patient comfort scores for the CMOS and PSP detectors were 4.57 and 4.48, respectively, without a statistically significant difference (P>0.05). The performance of both observers in subjectively assessing structures was significantly higher when using CMOS images than when using PSP images for all regions (P<0.05). Conclusion: The CMOS detector was found to be superior to the PSP detector in terms of clinical time efficacy and subjective image quality.

RESUMEN

3D printing is a process whereby a given material is deposited in successive layers to create a 3D object. In dentistry, this technology involves three steps: digital data acquisition using a scanner and/or CBCT, data processing and design within a software application, and manufacturing through 3D printing. The aim of the present article is to discuss the clinical application of 3D printing in endodontics through the presentation of three specific and original endodontic clinical cases. Innovative approaches were utilized in these cases for the treatment of a calcified root canal, periapical surgery, and autotransplantation. The results of all three cases were promising regarding proper case selection and in the design process. 3D-printing technology may be helpful to reduce surgical time, operator bias, and the risk of procedural errors.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated the performance of the metal artifact reduction (MAR) tool in cone-beam computed tomographic scans using different fields of view (FOVs) in the detection of a root isthmus in mandibular molars with intraradicular posts. METHODS: Twenty-eight teeth were scanned by micro-computed tomographic imaging (gold standard images). Thereafter, specimens were allocated into the following groups: gutta-percha (teeth without posts, n = 10), a prefabricated metal post (n = 9), and a fiberglass post (n = 9). Cone-beam computed tomographic scans were taken using 8 acquisition protocols, varying the size of the FOV (10 × 5.5 cm and 5 × 5.5 cm) and the MAR tool (disabled, low, normal, and high modes). A root isthmus was evaluated considering a 5-point scale. Data were analyzed considering a 5% significance level. RESULTS: Intra- and interexaminer agreement varied from moderate to substantial. The frequency of correct diagnosis varied significantly in all groups regardless of the image acquisition protocol selected (P < .05). In the gutta-percha group, there was no difference in the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity values between the tested protocols. In the metal and fiberglass post groups, the accuracy values were higher with the "disabled" and "low" modes of the MAR tool regardless of the FOV size. This was also observed for the sensitivity values in the metal post group (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: The size of the FOV did not affect the performance of the MAR tool in the diagnosis of a root isthmus in molars with intraradicular posts. Our findings suggest that the use of the tool in the "normal" and "high" modes is contraindicated for this purpose.

OBJECTIVE: To compare observer agreement between endodontists and oral and maxillofacial radiologists (OMRs) in the detection and measurement of periapical lesions as depicted in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) with 2 voxel sizes. STUDY DESIGN: In total, 256 CBCT images of maxillary molars were evaluated by 2 endodontists and 2 OMRs. Images were obtained at voxel sizes of 0.2 and 0.4 mm. Observers evaluated 64 endodontically and 64 nonendodontically treated teeth for the presence of periapical lesions using a 5-point confidence scale. Weighted κ values were calculated to determine intra- and interobserver agreement. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were calculated to assess intra- and interobserver agreement in width and height measurements of the lesions. RESULTS: Intraobserver agreement ranged from fair to almost perfect, with κ values higher for the OMRs than for the endodontists. Interobserver agreement between endodontists ranged from fair to moderate at the 0.2mm voxel size and was slight at 0.4 mm. Agreement between OMRs was almost perfect at 0.2 mm and ranged from substantial to almost perfect at 0.4 mm. ICC was excellent for all observers in all conditions. CONCLUSIONS: Intra- and interobserver reliability was affected by voxel size and specialty. Correlation for measurements exhibited no variation.

OBJECTIVES: Providing ultrasound images of periapical lesions may be problematic depending on the thickness of the overlying cortical bone. Clinically, it is crucial to determine the cut-off value of overlaying bone thickness in terms of interference with ultrasound imaging in conjunction with assessment of changes in periapical jaw bone lesions. Our aim was to determine the minimum amount of overlaying buccal bone thickness of artificial periapical lesions in order to be visible by ultrasound imaging and to compare width, height, depth, surface area and volume measurements of detectable periapical lesions obtained from ultrasound and CBCT images. METHODS: Periapical lesions were created in 16 molar teeth of sheep mandibles. Cavities were enlarged until the borders of lesions were visible on 14 MHz hockey probe ultrasound imaging. CBCT and ultrasound images were obtained simultaneously after drilling and enlarging each size of the cavities and replacing the teeth in their sockets. two observers separately assessed images twice within 2 weeks of interval. By using CBCT and ultrasound images, buccal bone thickness, maximum width, height, depth, surface area and volume of periapical lesions were measured. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was utilized and significance level was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS: The mean buccal bone thickness ranged between 1.21 mm and 1.31 mm for both imaging techniques. For the measurement of buccal bone thickness, periapical lesion width, height, depth, surface area, and volume excellent ICC values were found in terms of intrarater (ranging between 0.907 and 1) and inter-rater (ranging between 0.864 and 1) reliability for both observers and their readings. There were no statistically significant differences for both observers and for their two readings between ultrasound and CBCT measurements of buccal bone thickness, and periapical lesion width and height (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: We suggested that a buccal thickness of approximately 1.28 mm might be accepted as a cut-off value for the detection of periapical lesions with 14 MHz hockey probe ultrasound. High resolution ultrasound provided accurate information for the measurement of buccal bone thickness and lesion width and height.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the in vitro performance of high-definition (HD) US, CBCT and periapical radiography for the visibility of proximal and recurrent caries in teeth with and without restoration. METHODS: A total of 240 molar teeth were divided into eight groups each comprised of 30 teeth. Control groups consisted of teeth without caries (Group 1-4; N = 120), whereas diseased groups consisted of teeth with proximal caries (Group 5-8; N = 120 teeth). Finally, a total of four image sets were obtained as follows: i) PSP periapical radiography, ii) CBCT 0.075 mm voxel size, iii) CBCT 0.2 mm voxel size and iv) HD US images. The image sets were viewed separately by four observers by using a 5-point confidence scale. Intraclass correlation coefficients were calculated. The areas under the ROC curves were compared using chi-square tests. Significance level was set at α = 0.05. RESULTS: Intraobserver agreement for both readings for the four observers ranged between 0.848 and 0.988 for CBCT (0.075 mm) images; 0.658 and 0.952 for CBCT (0.2 mm) images; 0.555 and 0.810 for periapical images; 0.427 and 0.676 for US images. Highest AUC values were found for CBCT (0.075 mm) images and lowest for US images. Statistically significant differences were found among CBCT (0.075 mm) images and US images (p < 0.001), CBCT (0.2 mm) images and US images (p < 0.001) and periapical images and US images (p < 0.001) for the detection of proximal caries. CONCLUSION: Periapical and CBCT images outperformed HD US imaging in the detection of proximal dental caries.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and compare the accuracy of high-resolution ultrasound (US) with two different cone beam CT (CBCT) units and clinical assessment for measuring gingival soft tissue thickness in edentulous patients prior to implant placement. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The study consisted of 40 maxillary implant sites of 40 healthy patients (20 females, 20 males; mean age, 47.88 years). We prospectively evaluated labial/buccal gingival thickness in 40 implant regions (16 anterior and 24 posterior) by using limited field of view (FOV) CBCT images and US images in comparison to gold standard transgingival probing measurements. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare mean measurements obtained from CBCT (Morita and Planmeca), US, and transgingival probing. Interclass correlation coefficient (ICC) estimates were calculated based on means with two-way mixed and absolute-agreement model. Bland Altman plot was used to describe agreement between clinical vs US and CBCT measurements by constructing limits of agreement. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between methods used according to mean gingival thickness measurements obtained from the top (p = 0.519) and bottom (p = 0.346) of the alveolar process. US and CBCT measurements highly correlated with clinical measurements for both top and bottom alveolar process gingival thickness (p < 0.001). Distribution of differences between clinical measurements and both CBCT measurements showed statistically significant differences according to 0 (p < 0.05). Distribution of differences between clinical measurements and US measurements did not show statistically significant difference (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: High-resolution US provided accurate information for the measurement of gingival soft tissue thickness in edentulous patients prior to implant placement.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the effects of 3 T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on the microleakage of 5 restorative materials. METHODS: In total, 100 maxillary molars were randomly assigned to 5 groups (n = 20) for restoration with 5 different materials: amalgam, light-cured glass-ionomer cement, feldspathic porcelain fused to metal, pressed lithium disilicate glass ceramic, and composite resin. In each group, 10 specimens were subjected to MRI, and 10 specimens served as controls with no MRI exposure. Standardized class V cavities were prepared with occlusal margins terminating in enamel and gingival margins terminating in dentin. Microleakage penetration at the enamel and dentin margins was calculated for each group. A chi-square test was used for intergroup comparisons. Statistical significance was established at P < .05. RESULTS: Microleakage penetration did not differ significantly between specimens subjected to MRI and the controls for any restoration (P ≥ .362 for the enamel margin, P ≥ .067 for the dentin margin) or between specimens treated with different restorative materials (P ≥ .355). No significant differences in microleakage were discovered between the enamel and dentin margins of any of the restorative groups (P ≥ .236). CONCLUSION: MRI had no effect on the microleakage of the 5 restorative materials.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate impacted mandibular third molar tooth region and obtain linear measurements using CBCT images and to assess the relationship between the impacted third molar and the mandibular canal. METHODS: CBCT scans of 351 patients (208 females, 143 males) were assessed. Age, gender, and impaction site were recorded for each patient. The relationship of third molars with the vertical axis of second molars, 2nd molar resorption and the relationship between third molar apices and the mandibular canal were assessed. In addition, the distance between ramus and second molar, mesiodistal width of the third molar, the angle between third molar and second molar, and width of the third molar capsule were measured. Binary Logistic Regression, Chi-Square Test, and General Linear Model were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: The highest percentage of impaction was found for mesioangular followed by transversal and vertical. The transversal impacted third molars revealed a significant association with adjacent second molar root resorption (p<0.001). There was a statistical significance between the second molar resorption and distance between ramus and second molar (p<0.001). The mesioangular impacted third molars revealed significant relation with the mandibular canal (p<0.05). The most frequent variation found was the dental canal followed by the retromolar canal. In general, higher measurement values were obtained for men when compared to women (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: CBCT assessment of the third molar region provided useful information regarding impacted mandibular third molar surgery operations.
