RESUMEN

MoS2, owing to its advantages of having a sheet-like structure, high electrical conductivity, and benign environmental nature, has emerged as a candidate of choice for electrodes of next-generation supercapacitors. Its widespread use is offset, however, by its low energy density and poor durability. In this study, to overcome these limitations, flower-shaped MoS2/graphene heterostructures have been deployed as electrode materials on flexible substrates. Three-electrode measurements yielded an exceptional capacitance of 853 F g-1 at 1.0 A g-1, while device measurements on an asymmetric supercapacitor yielded 208 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 and long-term cyclic durability. Nearly 86.5% of the electrochemical capacitance was retained after 10,000 cycles at 0.5 A g-1. Moreover, a remarkable energy density of 65 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 0.33 kW kg-1 was obtained. Our MoS2/Gr heterostructure composites have great potential for the development of advanced energy storage devices.

Although the Lower-Extremity Assessment Protocol (LEAP) assesses multidimensional aspects of a patient with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, there is a need to reduce the dimensionality of LEAP items to effectively assess patients. Therefore, the present study aimed to establish the validity of LEAP and to determine associated factors and components in a relationship between LEAP and the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) questionnaire. Fifteen patients who had ACL reconstruction more than 1 year and less than 5 years earlier were recruited. Patients performed LEAP, including muscular strength, fatigue index, static balance, drop landing, and functional hopping assessment. They also completed the IKDC questionnaire and the Tegner Activity Score. Factor analysis and stepwise regression analysis were performed. The 14 components of LEAP were categorized into four factors (functional task, muscle strength, neuromuscular control, and fatigue), which accounted for 83.8% of the cumulative variance by factor analysis. In the stepwise regression analysis, the functional task (R2 = 0.43, p = 0.008) in factors and single-leg hop (R2 = 0.49, p = 0.004) in components were associated with patient-oriented outcomes, respectively. In conclusion, the functional task and single-leg hop may be used for providing valuable information about knee joints to patients and clinicians.

With the rapid increase in application of disinfectants worldwide as a method to block the spread of coronavirus, many new products are being introduced into the market without thorough verification of their impacts on human health and the environment. In the present study, we aimed to propose a screening marker for materials that can induce fibrotic lung disease using disinfectants, which had been demonstrated as causative materials of chronic inflammation and interstitial fibrosis. We first calculated the corresponding LC50 level based on results from cell viability test and exposed the LC50 level of disinfectants to human bronchial epithelial cells for 24 h. Formation of lamellar body-like structures, cleavage of the nuclear matrix, structural damage of mitochondria were found in the cytosol of the treated cells. We also dosed disinfectants by pharyngeal aspiration to mice to determine the LD0 level. The mice were sacrificed on Day 14 after a single dosing, and lamellar body-like structures were observed in the lung tissue of mice. Herein, we hypothesize that DNA damage and metabolic disturbance may play central roles in disinfectant-induced adverse health effects. Additionally, we propose that formation of lamellar bodies can be a screening marker for interstitial fibrosis.

The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical outcomes of sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) using 2 kinds of SLIT medications (LAIS and Staloral) in patients with allergic rhinitis for Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and Dermatophagoides farinae. We have evaluated the patient's characteristics, safety, and compliance in 293 patients and also analyzed the symptom score, medication score, satisfaction rate, and immunologic measurement in 84 patients who have continued the treatment over 1 year. The symptom scores were significantly improved in both treatment groups, 51% versus 44% (LAIS vs Starloral) at 1 year (P < .05). The medication score was also significantly decreased in both treatment groups (P < .05), 50.8% versus 60%. The subjective improvement score was 44.4% versus 46.1%, and satisfaction rate was 29% versus 40% (P < .05). The serum immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4) level was significantly increased in Staloral group (P < .05). The adverse events were 6.2% versus 33.3% and the compliance was 37.7% versus 25.1%. In conclusion, the improvements in symptom score and medication scores were not significant different between 2 SLIT medications at 1 year. LAIS was more compliant, less side effects and Staloral has shown increased satisfaction rate and IgG4 level.

Korean red ginseng (KRG) has been traditionally used in Korea for health improvement. However, the clinical effect of KRG intake on the symptoms in patients with allergic rhinitis remains unknown. Our study was performed to identify the clinical effects of KRG on patients with allergic rhinitis and to examine the effect of KRG on allergic inflammatory reaction. We evaluated 60 patients with allergic rhinitis. All the patients were treated for 4 weeks. The patients were divided into 3 groups, according to the medication. Twenty patients were treated with KRG, 20 patients with the placebo, and 20 patients with the antihistamine. The patients recorded their symptoms in a daily symptom diary card. The patients checked the peak nasal inspiratory flow rate 2 times a day. Total serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) and serum-specific IgE were measured by ImmunoCap method before and after 4-week medication. The Th2 cytokines interleukin-4 (IL-4), IL-5, and IL-10 were checked in the serum before and after the 4-week treatment. The eosinophil counts in the nasal smears were checked. Korean red ginseng group has shown the significant improvement in rhinorrhea, nasal itching, and eye itching. Both the antihistamine and KRG groups showed a significant decrease in total IgE level at the end of treatment. The serum IL-4 level and eosinophil counts in the nasal smears were significantly decreased both in the antihistamine and in the KRG groups. In conclusion, KRG might be a useful treatment modality for patients with allergic rhinitis.

Although cochlear venous insufficiency has been considered to cause sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL), there is insufficient clinical evidence to support this hypothesis. We sought to determine whether there is a correlation between draining patterns of the dural venous sinuses and the side of the affected ear in SSHL, as well as hearing recovery. The medical records of 109 patients diagnosed with unilateral SSHL were retrospectively reviewed. Magnetic resonance images and pure tone audiometry were performed in all patients. We measured the dominance of the inferior petrosal sinus (IPS) and transverse-sigmoid sinus (TS/SS) ipsilateral to the affected ear. Most patients were characterized by asymmetric venous drainage (IPS, 53.2%; TS/SS, 81.7%). The dominant side of the IPS or TS/SS was independent of the side of the affected ear for all patients in this study. However, in 35 patients with early recovery within 2 weeks, the dominant side of TS/SS was significantly associated with the side of the affected ear (p = 0.011). Moreover, the dominance of both the IPS and TS/SS influenced hearing outcomes at 3 months. Dominant TS/SS ipsilateral to the affected ear, particularly in the presence of ipsilateral hypoplastic IPS, is associated with a favorable hearing prognosis of SSHL.

OBJECTIVES: We hypothesize that when temporal bone fractures occur, the pneumatic cells in the temporal bone are able to absorb most of the impact force during a traumatic event. This study aims to correlate the degree of pneumatization of the temporal bone with the severity of temporal bone fracture (TBF). METHODS: Charts and computed tomography scans representing 54 TBFs, diagnosed from 2012 to 2017 at a single tertiary hospital, were retrospectively reviewed. Temporal bone pneumatization (TBP) in the petrous apex and mastoid region was evaluated using previously published classification systems. TBP classifications and fracture types were correlated with TBF complications such as sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), facial nerve palsy (FNP), and vestibular dysfunction. RESULTS: Patients with increased pneumatization of the temporal bone had significantly fewer and less severe SNHL. SNHL more strongly correlated with the degree of pneumatization in the mastoid (P = 0.005) than that in the petrous apex (P = 0.024). On the other hand, the degree of TBP correlated poorly with FNP and vestibular dysfunction. However, the mastoid hypopneumatization demonstrated significant correlation with otic-capsule violations (P = 0.002). Fractures with otic-capsule violation were 4 times more likely to have vestibular dysfunction (P = 0.043) and 3 times more likely to have SNHL (P = 0.006). FNP was not associated with otic-capsule violating fractures but was 3.5 times more common in comminuted fractures (P = 0.025). CONCLUSIONS: The degree of temporal bone pneumatization was negatively correlated to the incidence of otic-capsule violation and the severity of hearing impairment in patients with temporal bone fracture. This study substantiated the potential protective effect of temporal bone pneumatization in TBFs.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine how reduced plantar cutaneous sensation influences static postural control in individuals with and without CAI. DESIGN: A case-control study design. METHODS: Twenty-six individuals with self-reported CAI and 26 matched healthy controls participated in this study. The plantar aspect of the participants' foot was then submersed in ice water (0°C) for 10min to reduce plantar sensation. Before and after the cooling procedure, plantar cutaneous sensation thresholds and single leg balance with eyes open and closed were assessed. RESULTS: Significantly, higher scores were observed in both groups after ice water submersion (p<0.001) indicating a significant reduction in the plantar cutaneous sensitivity after the cooling procedure. In single limb balance with eyes open, there were significant intervention main effects for the TTB ML mean (p<0.001), TTB AP mean (p=0.035) and TTB ML SD (p=0.021); indicating postural control improvement in both groups post-cooling. In single limb balance with eyes closed, Group×Intervention interactions were observed for the TTB AP mean (p=0.003) and TTB AP SD (p=0.017); indicating postural control deficits in CAI group post-cooling, but no changes in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: The main finding of this study was that reduced plantar cutaneous sensation induced by an ice submersion procedure caused eyes closed postural control impairments in those with CAI but not healthy controls. The present investigation demonstrated that the ability to dynamically reweight among sensory inputs to maintain postural stability appears to be diminished in CAI patients compared to healthy controls.

Vector-borne diseases are a potential public health threat to U.S. Forces Korea (USFK). Ehrlichia and Anaplasma spp., transmitted by ticks, are only two of several diseases that may affect military readiness and operations. Rodents were collected at selected U.S. military installations and training sites in the Republic of Korea. DNA was extracted from spleen tissues and assayed by PCR methods for Ehrlichia and Anaplasma species. From rodents and mustelids collected during 1999 and 2000, a total of 196 Apodemus agrarius (striped field mouse), 2 Mustela sibirica (weasel), and 1 Cricetulus triton nestor (Korean greater long-tailed hamster) were assayed for Ehrlichia and Anaplasma species-specific DNA fragments. Rodent surveillance indicated a very high prevalence of Ehrlichia and Anaplasma spp. at selected training sites. Ehrlichia/Anaplasma DNA were identified from spleen tissue from 157 Apodemus agrarius, 1 Mustela sibirica, and 1 Cricetulus riton nestor. Species-specific DNA fragments of E. canis (45), E. ewingii (16), A. phagocytophila (5), and A. platys (62) were amplified by PCR techniques. Seventy-one striped field mice had single infections, while 24 had mixed infections of 2 (17 specimens), 3 (7 specimens), or 4 (1 specimen) pathogens. The striped field mouse plays a role as a reservoir for latent infections of various Ehrlichia or Anaplasma species.
