Introduction: The research on plant leaf morphology is of great significance for understanding the development and evolution of plant organ morphology. As a relict plant, the G. biloba leaf morphology typically exhibits bifoliate and peltate forms. However, throughout its long evolutionary history, Ginkgo leaves have undergone diverse changes. Methods: This study focuses on the distinct "trumpet" leaves and normal fan-shaped leaves of G. biloba for analysis of their phenotypes, photosynthetic activity, anatomical observations, as well as transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses. Results: The results showed that trumpet-shaped G. biloba leaves have fewer cells, significant morphological differences between dorsal and abaxial epidermal cells, leading to a significantly lower net photosynthetic rate. Additionally, this study found that endogenous plant hormones such as GA, auxin, and JA as well as metabolites such as flavonoids and phenolic acids play roles in the formation of trumpet-shaped G. biloba leaves. Moreover, the experiments revealed the regulatory mechanisms of various key biological processes and gene expressions in the trumpet-shaped leaves of G. biloba. Discussion: Differences in the dorsal and abdominal cells of G. biloba leaves can cause the leaf to curl, thus reducing the overall photosynthetic efficiency of the leaves. However, the morphology of plant leaves is determined during the primordia leaf stage. In the early stages of leaf development, the shoot apical meristem (SAM) determines the developmental morphology of dicotyledonous plant leaves. This process involves the activity of multiple gene families and small RNAs. The establishment of leaf morphology is complexly regulated by various endogenous hormones, including the effect of auxin on cell walls. Additionally, changes in intracellular ion concentrations, such as fluctuations in Ca2+ concentration, also affect cell wall rigidity, thereby influencing leaf growth morphology.

With the increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents, to actively prevent the occurrence of asthma in this population is important for reducing the burden of the disease. Lifestyle factors, including diet and exercise, are importance for overweight and obese adolescents, as well as an important modifiable factor affecting airway inflammation and asthma, whether healthy lifestyle was correlated with the risk of asthma in adolescents ≥ 12 years has not been reported. We suspected that there might be correlation between healthy lifestyle behaviors and the risk of asthma in overweight and obese adolescents. This cross-sectional study aimed to explore the association between the adherence to a healthy lifestyle behaviors and the risk of asthma in overweight and obese adolescents based on the data of 945 participants aged between 12-18 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES). Univariable and multivariable weighted Logistic regression models were applied to evaluate the association between healthy lifestyle behaviors with asthma risk in overweight and obese adolescents. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were applied as estimates. We found that the risk of asthma was reduced in overweight and obese adolescents with intermediate (OR = 0.40, 95%CI: 0.17-0.94) or good lifestyle behaviors (OR = 0.33, 95%CI: 0.13-0.86) in comparison to those with poor lifestyle behaviors. In summary, intermediate or good lifestyle behaviors was correlated with decreased risk of asthma in overweight and obese adolescents, which might provide a reference for making further prevention strategies for asthma in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Function-preserving pancreatectomy can improve the long-term quality of life of patients with benign or low-grade malignant tumors, such as intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) and mucinous cystic neoplasms. However, there is limited literature on laparoscopic spleen-preserving total pancreatectomy (L-SpTP) due to technical difficulties. CASE SUMMARY: Patient 1 was a 51-year-old male diagnosed with IPMN based on preoperative imaging, showing solid nodules in the pancreatic head and diffuse dilation of the main pancreatic duct with atrophy of the distal pancreas. We performed L-SpTP with preservation of the splenic vessels, and the postoperative pathology report revealed IPMN with invasive carcinoma. Patient 2 was a 60-year-old male with multiple cystic lesions in the pancreatic head and body. L-SpTP was performed, and intraoperatively, the splenic vein was injured and required ligation. Postoperative pathology revealed a mucinous cystic tumor of the pancreas with low-grade dysplasia. Both patients were discharged on postoperative day 7, and there were no major complications during the perioperative period. CONCLUSION: We believe that L-SpTP is a safe and feasible treatment for low-grade malignant pancreatic tumors, but more case studies are needed to evaluate its safety, efficacy, and long-term outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Necroptosis has emerged as a novel molecular pathway that can be targeted by chemotherapy agents in the treatment of cancer. OSW-1, which is derived from the bulbs of Ornithogalum saundersiae Baker, exerts a wide range of pharmacological effects. AIM: To explore whether OSW-1 can induce necroptosis in colorectal cancer (CRC) cells, thereby expanding its range of clinical applications. METHODS: We performed a sequence of functional experiments, including Cell Counting Kit-8 assays and flow cytometry analysis, to assess the inhibitory effect of OSW-1 on CRC cells. We utilized quantitative proteomics, employing tandem mass tag labeling combined with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, to analyze changes in protein expression. Subsequent bioinformatic analysis was conducted to elucidate the biological processes associated with the identified proteins. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and immunofluorescence studies were also performed to examine the effects of OSW-1 on necroptosis. Finally, western blotting, siRNA experiments, and immunoprecipitation were employed to evaluate protein interactions within CRC cells. RESULTS: The results revealed that OSW-1 exerted a strong inhibitory effect on CRC cells, and this effect was accompanied by a necroptosis-like morphology that was observable via TEM. OSW-1 was shown to trigger necroptosis via activation of the RIPK1/RIPK3/MLKL pathway. Furthermore, the accumulation of p62/SQSTM1 was shown to mediate OSW-1-induced necroptosis through its interaction with RIPK1. CONCLUSION: We propose that OSW-1 can induce necroptosis through the RIPK1/RIPK3/MLKL signaling pathway, and that this effect is mediated by the RIPK1-p62/SQSTM1 complex, in CRC cells. These results provide a theoretical foundation for the use of OSW-1 in the clinical treatment of CRC.

Introduction: The global headlines have been dominated by the sudden and widespread outbreak of monkeypox, a rare and endemic zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV). Genomic composition based machine learning (ML) methods have recently shown promise in identifying host adaptability and evolutionary patterns of virus. Our study aimed to analyze the genomic characteristics and evolutionary patterns of MPXV using ML methods. Methods: The open reading frame (ORF) regions of full-length MPXV genomes were filtered and 165 ORFs were selected as clusters with the highest homology. Unsupervised machine learning methods of t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE), Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and hierarchical clustering were performed to observe the DCR characteristics of the selected ORF clusters. Results: The results showed that MPXV sequences post-2022 showed an obvious linear adaptive evolution, indicating that it has become more adapted to the human host after accumulating mutations. For further accurate analysis, the ORF regions with larger variations were filtered out based on the ranking of homology difference to narrow down the key ORF clusters, which drew the same conclusion of linear adaptability. Then key differential protein structures were predicted by AlphaFold 2, which meant that difference in main domains might be one of the internal reasons for linear adaptive evolution. Discussion: Understanding the process of linear adaptation is critical in the constant evolutionary struggle between viruses and their hosts, playing a significant role in crafting effective measures to tackle viral diseases. Therefore, the present study provides valuable insights into the evolutionary patterns of the MPXV in 2022 from the perspective of genomic composition characteristics analysis through ML methods.

Background: This study aimed to explore the risk factors of Modic changes in lumbar spondylolisthesis. Methods: The distribution of Modic changes in different types of lumbar spondylolisthesis, degree of spondylolisthesis, and degree of intervertebral disc degeneration in patients with lumbar spondylolisthesis was observed and analyzed. Statistical analysis was conducted to assess whether intervertebral disc degeneration, local mechanical changes, etc. affect the occurrence of Modic changes. The risk factors of Modic changes in lumbar spondylolisthesis were further illustrated. Results: The age in the lumbar spondylolisthesis with Modic changes group was younger than that in the lumbar spondylolisthesis without Modic changes group, and the bone mineral density was better in the lumbar spondylolisthesis with Modic changes group than that in the lumbar spondylolisthesis without Modic changes group, P < 0.05. The two groups statistically differed in intervertebral disc height (IDH) and disc angle on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In the classification of Modic changes, the incidence of type II was the highest. The incidence of Modic changes is higher in isthmic spondylolisthesis than in degenerative spondylolisthesis. With the aggravation of lumbar spondylolisthesis and intervertebral disc degeneration, the incidence of Modic changes gradually increased. Modic changes are most commonly seen in both the upper and lower endplates. Logistic regression analysis showed that the occurrence of Modic changes in lumbar spondylolisthesis was significantly correlated with IDH, disc angle on MRI, type of spondylolisthesis, degree of spondylolisthesis, and degree of intervertebral disc degeneration, P < 0.05. Conclusions: The occurrence of Modic changes is related to the type of spondylolisthesis, the degree of spondylolisthesis, the degree of disc degeneration, the decrease of intervertebral disc height, and local stress angulation.

Benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene (BDT) and its derivatives have made important contributions to constructing high-performance polymers. However, it is difficult to clarify the real role of donor units due to the interference of strong electronegativity and crystallinity of acceptor units in the D-A copolymer. Here, we design a cyclohexane-substituted dithieno[3,2-f:2',3'-h]quinoxaline (DTQ)-based acceptor unit with successfully destroyed crystallinity and charge transport. Three donor-dominated materials PQH-BTF, PQH-BTCl, and PQH-BFCl are obtained. It is found that the materials exhibit obvious differences after destroying the crystallization and charge transport of the acceptor unit, and the real role of different two-dimensional donor units in designed polymers is confirmed. The backbone BDF exhibits much stronger intermolecular interactions compared to BDT, while the side chain ThF demonstrates a higher crystallization capacity than that of ThCl. More interestingly, it can be inferred that the molecular backbone is likely to construct miscible-phase crystallization (D-A crystal) while the side chain tends to demonstrate a capacity for pure-phase crystallization (D-D crystal) in a 2D donor system. Different crystallization leads to different exciton transport: pure-phase crystallization is conducive to the reduction of trap-assisted recombination, while miscible crystallization is beneficial to the reduction of bimolecular recombination. This work can help to choose donor units more accurately when preparing D-A copolymers.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the effect of low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) on the decidualization of stromal cells in early pregnancy and explore the effect of LMWH on pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: Recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) mouse model (CBA/J × DBA/2) and normal pregnant mouse model (CBA/J × BALB/c) were established. The female mice were checked for a mucus plug twice daily to identify a potential pregnancy. When a mucus plug was found, conception was considered to have occurred 12 h previously. The pregnant mice were divided randomly into a normal pregnancy control group, an RSA model group, and an RSA + LMWH experimental group (n = 10 mice in each group). Halfway through the 12th day of pregnancy, the embryonic loss of the mice was observed; a real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction was used to detect the messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) expressions of prolactin (PRL) and insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 1 (IGFBP1) in the decidua of the mice. Additionally, the decidual tissues of patients with RSA and those of normal women in early pregnancy who required artificial abortion were collected and divided into an RSA group and a control group. Decidual stromal cells were isolated and cultured to compare cell proliferation between the two groups, and cellular migration and invasion were detected by membrane stromal cells. Western blotting was used to detect the protein expressions of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), cyclin D1, matrix metalloproteinase- (MMP) 2, and MMP-7 in stromal cells treated with LMWH. RESULTS: Compared with the RSA group, LMWH significantly reduced the pregnancy loss rate in the RSA mice (p < 0.05). Compared with the RSA group, the LMWH + RSA group had significantly higher expression levels of PRL and IGFBP1 mRNA (p < 0.01). LMWH promoted the proliferation, migration, and invasion of human decidual stromal cells; compared with the control group, the expression levels of MMP-2, MMP-7, cyclin D1, and PCNA proteins in the decidual stromal cells of the LMWH group increased (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The use of LMWH can improve pregnancy outcomes by enhancing the proliferation and migration of stromal cells in early pregnancy and the decidualization of stromal cells.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a prevalent complication of diabetes, significantly impacting patients' quality of life due to vision loss. No pharmacological therapies are currently approved for DR, excepted the drugs to treat diabetic macular edema such as the anti-VEGF agents or steroids administered by intraocular route. Advancements in research have highlighted the crucial role of early intervention in DR for halting or delaying disease progression. This holds immense significance in enhancing patients' quality of life and alleviating the societal burden associated with medical care costs. The non-proliferative stage represents the early phase of DR. In comparison to the proliferative stage, pathological changes primarily manifest as microangiomas and hemorrhages, while at the cellular level, there is a loss of pericytes, neuronal cell death, and disruption of components and functionality within the retinal neuronal vascular unit encompassing pericytes and neurons. Both neurodegenerative and microvascular abnormalities manifest in the early stages of DR. Therefore, our focus lies on the non-proliferative stage of DR and we have initially summarized the mechanisms involved in its development, including pathways such as polyols, that revolve around the pathological changes occurring during this early stage. We also integrate cutting-edge mechanisms, including leukocyte adhesion, neutrophil extracellular traps, multiple RNA regulation, microorganisms, cell death (ferroptosis and pyroptosis), and other related mechanisms. The current status of drug therapy for early-stage DR is also discussed to provide insights for the development of pharmaceutical interventions targeting the early treatment of DR.

The postmortem interval (PMI) estimation is a key and difficult point in the practice of forensic medicine, and forensic scientists at home and abroad have been searching for objective, quantifiable and accurate methods of PMI estimation. With the development and combination of high-throughput sequencing technology and artificial intelligence technology, the establishment of PMI model based on the succession of the microbial community on corpses has become a research focus in the field of forensic medicine. This paper reviews the technical methods, research applications and influencing factors of microbial community in PMI estimation explored by using high-throughput sequencing technology, to provide a reference for the related research on the use of microbial community to estimate PMI.

Stem photosynthesis widely presents in desert plants, which increases carbon uptake capacity. In this study, we measured the photosynthetic characteristics of leaves and stems in seven desert woody plants (Populus euphratica, Populus alba var. pyramidalis, Populus pruinose, Haloxylon ammodendron, Calligonum rubicundum, Calligonum caput-medusae, Ammopiptanthus mongolicus) in the same habitat, using a portable Li-6400XT photosynthesis system combined with P-Chamber. We analyzed stem photosynthetic rate and its relationship with leaf photosynthetic rate. We measured the stem functional traits, including water content, stem dry matter content, chlorophyll content, water potential, non-structure carbohydrate (NSC), etc., to find out the main affecting factors of stem photosynthesis. The results showed that stem photosynthetic rate of seven species ranged from 0.72 to 1.71 µmol·m-2·s-1, with the largest of P. pruinose and the smallest of H. ammodendron. Stem photosynthetic rate could offset CO2 of stem respiration by 57%-83%. Leaf photosynthetic rate of the seven sepceis ranged from 12.80 to 22.54 µmol·m-2·s-1, with H. ammodendron and A. mongolicus being lower than those of the other five species. There was a significant positive correlation between leaf photosynthetic rate and stem photosynthetic rate. Stem water use efficiency was 2.2-7.7 times of the leaf. Chlorophyll content, NSC, stem respiration rate, and leaf photosynthetic rate were the main factors affecting stem photosynthesis.

OBJECTIVE: To explore nursing cooperation in surgical collection of the testis tissue from prepubertal male patients for cryopreservation. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the methods and effects of perioperative nursing in surgical collection of the testis tissue from 4 prepubertal male patients for cryopreservation in our Center of Reproductive Medicine. Before, during and after operation, we took strict measures in making sterilized ice containers, intraoperative nursing cooperation, protection of the isolated testis tissues and transferring of the samples. RESULTS: Testis tissues were successfully collected from all the 4 prepubertal males, 31, 31, 20 and 34 samples from each case respectively, well protected and subjected to slow cryopreservation after standard processing in the embryo laboratory. CONCLUSION: In surgical collection of the testis tissue for cryopreservation, preparation of sterilized ice containers, intraoperative nursing cooperation and protection and transferring of the samples are essential for standard processing and cryopreservation of the testis tissue in the embryo laboratory.

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is a common chronic complication of diabetes mellitus. One of the most common types is distal symmetric poly-neuropathy, which begins as bilateral symmetry pain and hyperesthesia and gradually progresses into hypoesthesia with nerve fibre disorder and is frequently accompanied by depression and anxiety. Notably, more than half of patients with DPN can be asymptomatic, which tends to delay early detection. Furthermore, the study of adverse outcomes showed that DPN is a prominent risk factor for foot ulceration, gangrene and nontraumatic amputation, which decreases quality of life. Thus, it is essential to develop convenient diagnostic biomarkers with high sensitivity for screening and early intervention. It has been reported that there may be common pathways for microvascular and macrovascular complications of diabetes. The pathogenesis of both disorders involves vascular endothelial dys-function. Emerging evidence indicates that traditional and novel cardiovascular-related biomarkers have the potential to characterize patients by subclinical disease status and improve risk prediction. Additionally, beyond traditional cardiovascular-related biomarkers, novel cardiovascular-related biomarkers have been linked to diabetes and its complications. In this review, we evaluate the association between major traditional and nontraditional car-diovascular-related biomarkers of DPN, such as cardiac troponin T, B-type natriuretic peptide, C-reactive protein, myeloperoxidase, and homocysteine, and assess the evidence for early risk factor-based management strategies to reduce the incidence and slow the progression of DPN.

INTRODUCTION: People with dementia often experience behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), which are a major cause of caregiver burden and institutionalization. Therefore, we conducted a double-blind, parallel-group randomized controlled trial to examine the efficacy of blue-enriched light therapy for BPSD in institutionalized older adults with dementia. METHODS: Participants were enrolled and randomly allocated into blue-enriched light therapy (N = 30) or the conventional light group (N = 30) for 60 min in 10 weeks with five sessions per week. The primary outcome was sleep quality measured by actigraphy and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The secondary outcome was overall BPSD severity (Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory [CMAI] and Neuropsychiatric Inventory [NPI-NH]). The outcome indicators were assessed at baseline, mid-test, immediate posttest, 1-month, 3-month, and 6-month follow-up. The effects of the blue-enriched light therapy were examined by the generalized estimating equation model. RESULTS: Blue-enriched light therapy revealed significant differences in the objective sleep parameters (sleep efficiency: ß = 5.81, Waldχ2 = 32.60, CI: 3.82; 7.80; sleep latency: ß = -19.82, Waldχ2 = 38.38, CI:-26.09; -13.55), subjective sleep quality (PSQI: ß = -2.07, Waldχ2 = 45.94, CI: -2.66; -1.47), and overall BPSD severity (CMAI: ß = -0.90, Waldχ2 = 14.38, CI: -1.37; -0.44) (NPI-NH: ß = -1.67, Waldχ2 = 30.61, CI: -2.26; -1.08) compared to conventional phototherapy immediate posttest, 1-month, 3-month, and 6-month follow-up. Furthermore, the effects for sleep efficiency and sleep latency lasted for up to 6 months. In the subscale analysis, the differences of the behavioral symptoms changed significantly between the groups in physical/nonaggressive (CI: -1.01; -0.26) and verbal/nonaggressive (CI: -0.97; -0.29). CONCLUSIONS: Blue-enriched light therapy is a feasible low-cost intervention that could be integrated as a comprehensive therapy program for BPSD among older adults with dementia.

Background: Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a common cause of neck pain, which is a global public health problem. Because MPS does not present morphological changes within lesioned muscles, there are no imaging diagnostic criteria for this condition. In this study, we evaluate elasticity changes in upper trapezius muscles most frequently involved in cervical MPS using real-time ultrasound shear-wave elastography, and we examine their potential diagnostic value. Methods: We consecutively enrolled 109 right posterior neck pain patients for this prospective study. Of these, 51 were diagnosed with MPS and 58 with non-MPS in the right side of their neck. Among MPS patients, 19 fell into the 1-3 range (mild pain) for pain scores on the visual analog scale (VAS), 25 fell into the 4-6 range (moderate pain), and 7 into the 7-10 range (severe pain). MPS was diagnosed by two independent clinicians using the diagnostic criteria proposed by Simons et al. Using real-time ultrasound shear-wave elastography, we measured right trapezius mean shear-wave velocity (SWVmean). The midpoint of the line between the foramen magnum and the end of the right acromion served as measuring point. Regions of interest were scaled to span 0-8.0 m/s. Results: Trapezius SWVmean was significantly higher in MPS patients compared with non-MPS patients (P<0.001). Stratified analysis of MPS patients according to pain severity revealed similar trapezius SWVmean between mild pain and non-MPS patients (P=0.324), however SWVmean was higher in moderate and severe pain MPS patients compared with non-MPS patients (P<0.001). The area under the curve (AUC) value for upper trapezius SWVmean in MPS patients was 0.791 (95% CI: 0.703-0.863). Corresponding sensitivity and specificity values were 86.27% (95% CI: 73.7-94.3%) and 62.07% (95% CI: 48.4-74.5%). Stratified analysis of MPS patients by pain severity produced the following AUC values for trapezius SWVmean in MPS patients with mild, moderate, and severe pain: 0.578 (95% CI: 0.460-0.690), 0.899 (95% CI: 0.814-0.955), and 0.983 (95% CI: 0.914-0.999), respectively. Conclusions: Elasticity changes and increased stiffness in the trapezius occur in cervical MPS patients with moderate and severe pain. The SWVmean parameter reflecting trapezius muscle elasticity may be valuable for successful screening of cervical MPS, especially in patients with moderate and severe pain.

The relationships between mixtures of multiple minerals and depression have not been explored. Therefore, we analyzed the relationship between the mixture of nine dietary minerals [calcium (Ca), phosphorus, magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), zinc, copper (Cu), sodium, potassium (K), and selenium (Se)] and depressive symptoms in the general population. We screened 20,342 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2018. We fitted the general linear regression, Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR), and Bayesian semiparametric regression models to explore associations and interactions. We obtained the relative importance of dietary minerals by calculating posterior inclusion probabilities (PIPs). The dietary intakes of minerals were obtained using the 24-h dietary recall interview, and depressive symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). The linear analysis showed that nine minerals were negatively associated with PHQ-9 scores. The BKMR analysis showed a negative association between the dietary mineral mixture and PHQ-9 scores, with Se having the largest PIP at 1.0000, followed by K (0.7784). We also observed potential interactions between Ca and Fe, Se and Fe, and K and Mg. Among them, the interaction of Ca and Fe had the largest PIP of 0.986. In addition, the overall effect was more pronounced in females than males, and Cu's PIP (0.8376) was higher in females. Two sensitivity analyses showed that our results were robust. Our study provides a basis for formulating nutritional intervention programs for depression in the future.

OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the necessity of surgical re-staging in women with borderline ovarian tumors (BOTs) and evaluated the impact of complete surgical staging, lymphadenectomy, and omentectomy on disease recurrence and survival. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with BOTs. A total of 901 patients were eligible for inclusion in the study, and we evaluated some of the variables and clinical/surgical characteristics of the cases. The effects of the type of surgical procedure, surgical staging, and complete or incomplete staging on recurrence were calculated. The rates of disease-free survival, overall survival, and recurrence were compared according to complete surgical staging. A Cox regression analysis was performed to identify potential prognostic factors, and survival curves were constructed using the Kaplan-Meier method. RESULTS: The overall recurrence rate was 13.9%, and recurrence was comparable between the complete surgical staging group and the incomplete groups (P>0.05). The performance of complete surgical staging did not show an effect on long-term survival, and complete surgical staging, omentectomy, and lymphadenectomy had no effect on recurrence. In multivariate analyses, only radical surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy were risk factors for the recurrence of BOTs. Furthermore, we found that omentectomy led to a relatively low recurrence rate in patients with International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage > I (P=0.022). CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that complete surgical staging should be considered a standard treatment for patients with advanced stage BOTs but not for those at FIGO stage I. It might be safe to reduce the scope of surgical procedures in patients with early-stage BOTs. However, it is not necessary to perform re-staging operations for BOTs with a macroscopically normal extra-ovarian appearance.

BACKGROUND: Lymph node metastasis (LNM) is a critical prognostic factor in resectable pancreatic cancer (PC) patients, determining treatment strategies. This study aimed to develop a clinical model to adequately and accurately predict the risk of LNM in PC patients. METHODS: 13,200 resectable PC patients were enrolled from the SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results) database, and randomly divided into a training group and an internal validation group at a ratio of 7:3. An independent group (n = 62) obtained from The First Affiliated Hospital of Xinxiang Medical University was enrolled as the external validation group. The univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to screen independent risk factors for LNM. The minimum Akaike's information criterion (AIC) was performed to select the optimal model parameters and construct a nomogram for assessing the risk of LNM. The performance of the nomogram was assessed by the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve, calibration plot, and decision curve analysis (DCA). In addition, an online web calculator was designed to assess the risk of LNM. RESULT: A total of six risk predictors (including age at diagnosis, race, primary site, grade, histology, and T-stage) were identified and included in the nomogram. The areas under the curves (AUCs) [95% confidential interval (CI)] were 0.711 (95%CI: 0.700-0.722), 0.700 (95%CI: 0.683-0.717), and 0.845 (95%CI: 0.749-0.942) in the training, internal validation and external validation groups, respectively. The calibration curves showed satisfied consistency between nomogram-predicted LNM and actual observed LNM. The concordance indexes (C-indexes) in the training, internal, and external validation sets were 0.689, 0.686, and 0.752, respectively. The DCA curves of the nomogram demonstrated good clinical utility. CONCLUSION: We constructed a nomogram model for predicting LNM in pancreatic cancer patients, which may help oncologists and surgeons to choose more individualized clinical treatment strategies and make better clinical decisions.

Secondary trunk Ginkgo biloba is one of the specific germplasms of G. biloba. In this study, paraffin sectioning, high-performance liquid chromatography and transcriptome sequencing technology were used to study the development of the secondary trunk of G. biloba from the morphological, physiological and molecular levels. The results showed that the secondary trunk of G. biloba originated from the latent buds in the stem cortex at the junction of the root and stem of the main trunk. The development process of secondary trunk was divided into 4 periods: the dormancy period of the secondary trunk buds, the differentiation period, the formation period of transport tissue, and the budding period. Transcriptome sequencing was performed by comparing the germination period and elongation growth period of the secondary trunk with the normal parts of the same period where no secondary trunks occurred. Differential genes involved in phytohormone signal transduction, phenylpropane biosynthesis, phenylalanine metabolism, glycolysis and other pathways can regulate not only the inhibition of early dormant buds but also the later development of the secondary trunk. Genes related to IAA synthesis are upregulated and indole-3-acetic acid content is increased, leading to the up-regulated expression of IAA intracellular vector genes. The IAA response gene (SAUR) receives and responds to IAA signals to promote the development of the secondary trunk. Through the enrichment of differential genes and functional annotations, a key regulatory pathway map for the occurrence of the secondary trunk of G. biloba was sorted out.

AIMS: The prediction of outcomes in convulsive status epilepticus (CSE) remains a constant challenge. The Encephalitis-Nonconvulsive Status Epilepticus-Diazepam Resistance-Image Abnormalities-Tracheal Intubation (END-IT) score was a useful tool for predicting the functional outcomes of CSE patients, excluding cerebral hypoxia patients. With further understanding of CSE, and in view of the deficiencies of END-IT itself, we consider it necessary to modify the prediction tool. METHODS: The prediction model was designed from a cohort of CSE patients from Xijing Hospital (China), between 2008 and 2020. The enrolled subjects were randomly divided into training cohort and validation cohort as a ratio of 2:1. The logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the predictors and construct the nomogram. The performance of the nomogram was assessed by calculating the concordance index, and creating calibration plots to check the consistency between the predicted probabilities of poor prognosis and the actual outcomes of CSE. RESULTS: The training cohort included 131 patients and validation cohort included 66 patients. Variables included in the nomogram were age, etiology of CSE, non-convulsive SE, mechanical ventilation, abnormal albumin level at CSE onset. The concordance index of the nomogram in the training and validation cohorts was 0.853 (95% CI, 0.787-0.920) and 0.806 (95% CI, 0.683-0.923), respectively. The calibration plots showed an adequate consistency between the reported and predicted unfavorable outcomes of patients with CSE at 3 months after discharge. CONCLUSIONS: A nomogram for predicting the individualized risks of poor functional outcomes in CSE was constructed and validated, which has been an important modification of END-IT score.
