RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Differential diagnosis between the normocalcemic primary hyperparathyroidism (nPHPT) and secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) due to hypercalciuria remains a challenge. AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate the capability of short test with hydrochlorothiazide for the differential diagnosis of nPHPT and SHPT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted with the participation of 28 patients who underwent a functional test with thiazide diuretics during hospitalization in the Department of parathyroid glands pathology and mineral disorders of the Endocrinology Research Centre, Russia. Parameters of mineral metabolism were evaluated before and 3-5 days after taking hydrochlorothiazide 50 mg/day. RESULTS: According to baseline and dynamic biochemical evaluation patients were divided into 3 groups. Group 1 (n=21) included patients with confirmed PHPT, who reached hypercalcemia accompanying with an elevated level of iPTH (n=19) or an increased level of iPTH accompanying with normocalcemia (n=2). In group 1, baseline Caadj. was 2.48 mmol/l [2.47; 2.52], iPTH 107.5 pg/ml [86.8; 133.0], after short test - 2.63 mmol/l [2.59; 2.66] and 102.1 pg/ml [95,7; 124,1]. Group 2 included only one who was diagnosed with SHPT, a normal value of iPTH with concomitant normocalcemia was achieved after 4 days of hydrochlorothiazide therapy (baseline Caadj. 2.35 mmol/l, iPTH 74.5 pg/ml vs at 2.27 mmol/l and 50.7 pg/ml respectively). Patients with doubtful results of the test entered in group 3 (n=6), they did not achieve significant changes in the calcium and iPTH levels, so it was recommended to continue the test on an outpatient basis (baseline Caadj. 2.39 mmol/l [2.33;2.45], iPTH 97.0 pg/ml [83.1;117.0]); after short test - 2.47 mmol/l [2.42; 2.48] and 91.3 pg/ml [86.9; 124.0] respectively). Groups with PHPT and SHPT and doubtful results significantly differed from each other in Caadj (р=0.003, U-test, Bonferroni correction Р0=0.006), but not in iPTH, daily calciuria, eGFR, and phosphorus. There were no significant differences in the incidence of classical complications of PHPT. CONCLUSION: The diagnosis of PHPT was confirmed in 21/28 patients 3-5 days after taking hydrochlorothiazide 50 mg/day. The obtained results are significant for the differential diagnosis in hospitalized patients with an unspecified genesis of hyperparathyroidism.

RESUMEN

The effect of water isotopic composition on concentration of oil-oxidizing actinobacteria Rhodococcus erythropolis VKM Ac-2017D cellular biomass is observed during cultivation in liquid nutrient media. The value for the effect was determined by experimental conditions, including consecutive use of hydrophilic and hydrophobic nutritious substrates--saccharose and hexadecane. It is shown, that when Rhodococcus erythropolis VKM Ac-2017D cells, cultivated in media with sucrose and 71 and 98 ppm deuterium content in water were inoculated into the similar in mineral and isotopic composition media with hexadecane, a considerable increase in cellular biomass production is observed if compared to a control sample in which water with 150 ppm deuterium concentration was used.

RESUMEN

The genes IE175, IE63, IE68, IE12, UL29 and UL19 of herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 were cloned. Fragments of these genes were cloned into open reading frame expression vector pEX1-3. Recombinant proteins containing amino acid sequences of ICP4, ICP27, ICP22, ICP47, major DNA-binding protein and major capsid protein were expressed in E. coli cells by fusion with cro-beta-galactosidase proteins.

RESUMEN

Complete genes IE12, IE63, IE68, IE175, UL19, UL29 of herpes simplex virus type I or their fragments have been cloned in Escherichia coli cells. The peptides expressed were shown to be fused with cro-beta-galactosidase proteins. The recombinant proteins containing amino acid sequences of ICP4, ICP27 and ICP47, major capsid protein, and major DNA-binding protein react in immunoblotting with the anti-HSVI serum from hyperimmune rabbit. The recombinant proteins can be used for creation of diagnosticums and other scientific and practical purposes. The immunological properties of the recombinant proteins are being investigated.

RESUMEN

The structural and nonstructural recombinant proteins of HSV type 1 and type 2 were expressed in E. coli by fusion with cro-beta-galactosidase proteins. These proteins containing amino acid sequences of ICP4, ICP27, ICP47, ICP22, major capsid protein and major DNA-binding proteins of HSV types 1 and 2 reacted in immunoblotting with the corresponding anti-HSV sera from hyperimmune rabbits. The nonstructural recombinant proteins can be used for enzyme immunoassay detection of HSV1 or HSV2 type-specific antibodies in sera from patients with acute HSV infection.

RESUMEN

OFFthe rice fields of the Krasnodar Territory the intensive epizootic of leptospirosis icterohemorrhagica can be observed in the population of Norway rats (995 animals have been examined and 102 cultures obtained) the whole year round. The highest intensity of the epizootic process is known to fall on the end of summer and the beginning of autumn (45-50% of Leptospira carriers). The natural focus of leptospirosis on the rice-growing complex is epidemiologically dangerous. The epizootic process can be suppressed by reducing the population of rats by means of poisoned baits. The alternate use of different poisons ( rotindan , brodifacum ) given in the form of paraffined briquettes has proved to be most expedient.

RESUMEN

The mass radioisotope (32P) labelling of all tundra voles excreting Zeptospira, infected urine was carried out over the area of 1 ha, and the results of the experiment analyzed by the method of planar coherent graphs, showed the irregular (spotted) distribution of "infected spots", i. e. soil patches contaminated by Zeptospira. The borders of individual small foci of infection did not coincide with the outlines of soil and vegetational divisions of the area. The spatial structure of the "extraorganismic" part of the Zeptospira population was originally formed by the carriers and thus determined by their mobility, their manner of using the territory. Later this structure was changed by selective elimination under the influence of living conditions for Zeptospira in the soil. The "infected spots", subjected to such selection, seem to be capable of constantly sustaining Zeptospira; the presence of these organisms is also due to the fact that they are regularly added into the soil with urine excreted by the carriers visiting the same spots of their territory.

RESUMEN

In the natural focus of leptospirosis at the lake Nero (Yaroslav region, USSR) 630 samples of soil were investigated for the presence of leptospires. Seven cultures of leptospires were isolated from the soil; five of them were pathogenic (four belonged to the serogroup Grippotyphosa and one to the serogroup Hebdomadis) and two were saprophytic. Among the cultures of pathogenic leptospires isolated from the soil there was observed the same quantitative ratio of serogroups as among cultures obtained from rodents, which suggests that the leptospires circulate from mammals to soil and vice versa.
