RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is an important tool in rat models of cerebrovascular disease. Although MRA has long been used in rodents, the image quality is typically not as high as that observed in clinical practice. Moreover, studies on MRA image quality in rats are limited. This study aimed to develop a practical high-spatial-resolution MRA protocol for imaging cerebral arteries in rats. NEW METHOD: We used the "half position method" regarding coil placement and modified the imaging parameters and image reconstruction method. We applied this new imaging method to measure maturation-related signal changes on rat MRAs. RESULTS: The new practical high-spatial-resolution MRA imaging protocol obtained a signal intensity up to 3.5 times that obtained using a basic coil system, simply by modifying the coil placement method. This method allowed the detection of a gradual decrease in the signal in cerebral vessels with maturation. COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHODS: A high-spatial-resolution MRA for rats was obtained with an imaging time of approximately 100 min. Comparable resolution and image quality were obtained using the new protocol with an imaging time of 30 min CONCLUSIONS: The new practical high-spatial-resolution MRA protocol can be implemented simply and successfully to achieve high image quality with an imaging time of approximately 30 min. This protocol will benefit researchers performing MRA imaging in cerebral artery studies in rats.

PURPOSE: We developed a novel digital phantom-creation tool that will help formulate the standard shooting method for a three-phase dynamic liver study. Here, we present data demonstrating the usefulness of this tool in the assessment of low-contrast detectability and visibility. METHODS: We performed a visual evaluation by adding a spherical digital phantom with a diameter of 8 mm and a computed tomography (CT) value difference of 10 Hounsfield unit (HU) to images taken using filtered back projection and seven types of adaptive iterative dose reduction 3D (Weak, Mild, eMild, Standard, eStandard, Strong, and eStrong). We also examined the partial-volume effect by drawing a profile curve using a digital phantom with a CT value difference of 30 HU and a diameter of 5 mm. Furthermore, a digital phantom with two kinds of filters (smoothing and Gaussian) was added to the image of the home-made simulated tumor phantom to visual valuate its visibility in the phantom's low-contrast module and the digital phantom. RESULTS: Detection sensitivity was significantly decreased in Standard, eStandard, Strong, and eStrong, and the area under the curve also decreased in a similar fashion. We confirmed that the partial-volume effect was due to the different maximum CT values in the profile curve at 4 and 5 mm thickness. The visibility of the low-contrast module and digital phantom was most consistent when using the Gaussian filter. CONCLUSION: This tool can be used for low-contrast detection ability evaluation.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: We developed software to calculate the pixels of interest in the area between the hepatic and heart curves (ABC) of (99m)Tc-galactosyl human serum albumin (GSA) scintigraphy. The aim of this study was to examine the accuracy of the ABC to evaluate liver function before hepatectomy. METHODS: Between January 2005 and December 2010, 205 consecutive patients who underwent initial hepatectomy were enrolled in this study. The ABC was calculated using original computer software. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was calculated for evaluation of Child-Pugh score grade B (Child B), pathological chronic hepatitis (CH), and liver cirrhosis (LC). RESULTS: The AUC of any indicator for Child B was more than 0.900 except bilirubin. The AUC of ABC for CH and LC (AUC 0.734 each) was comparable to those of HH15 (clearance index; AUC 0.704 and 0.700, respectively) and LHL15 (receptor index; AUC 0.703 and 0.706, respectively) in multiple receiver operating characteristic comparison. CONCLUSIONS: We have developed a novel liver function indicator, the ABC, to count radioactivity in sequence. The ABC reflects liver function according to pathological deterioration of the liver. Although the ABC gave no significant advantage compared to HH15 and LHL15, it improved the AUC evaluation by 0.028-0.034.

To plan stent-grafting for thoracic aortic aneurysm with complicated morphology, we created a virtual stent-grafting program [Semi Automatic Virtual Stent (SAVS) designer] using three-dimensional CT data. The usefulness of the SAVS designer was evaluated by measurement of transformed anatomical and straight stents. Curved model images (source, multi-planer reconstruction and volume rendering) were created, and a hollow virtual stent was produced by the SAVS designer. A straight Nitinol stent was transformed to match the curved configuration of the virtual stent. The accuracy of the anatomical stent was evaluated by experimental strain phantom studies in comparison with the straight stent. Mean separation length was 0 mm in the anatomical stent [22 mm outer diameter (OD)] and 5 mm in the straight stent (22 mm OD). The straight stent strain voltage was four times that of the anatomical stent at the stent end. The anatomical stent is useful because it fits the curved structure of the aorta and reduces the strain force compared to the straight stent. The SAVS designer can help to design and produce the anatomical stent.
