RESUMEN

We report the first observation of the spin Hall conductivity spectrum in GaAs at room temperature. Our terahertz polarimetry with a precision of several µrads resolves the Faraday rotation of terahertz pulses arising from the inverse spin Hall effect of optically injected spin-polarized electrons. The obtained spin Hall conductivity spectrum exhibits an excellent quantitative agreement with theory, demonstrating a crossover in the dominant origin from impurity scattering in the dc regime to the intrinsic Berry-curvature mechanism in the terahertz regime. Our spectroscopic technique opens a new pathway to analyze anomalous transports related to spin, valley, or orbital degrees of freedom.

PURPOSE: With the current study, we aimed to reveal the similarities and differences in sensory profiles between Williams syndrome (WS) and autism spectrum disorder. METHODS: Using the sensory profile questionnaire completed by the caregivers, we analyzed the WS (n = 60, 3.4-19.8 years) and autistic (n = 39, 4.2-14.0 years) groups. RESULTS: The Severity Analysis revealed a significant group difference in Sensory Sensitivity but not in Low Registration, Sensation Seeking, and Sensation Avoiding subscales. Age can modulate the subscale scores differently across groups. For Sensation Seeking, the scores of both groups decreased with development. However, the scores of Sensory Sensitivity decreased with age in the autistic group but not in the WS group. Sensation Avoiding scores increased with development in the WS group but not in the autistic group. No significant developmental changes were observed in Low Registration. CONCLUSION: This study highlights the cross-syndrome similarities and differences in sensory profiles and developmental changes in autistic individuals and individuals with WS.

Generative design is a system that automates part of the design process, but it cannot evaluate psychological issues related to shapes, such as "beauty" and "liking". Designers therefore evaluate and choose the generated shapes based on their experience. Among the design features, "complexity" is considered to influence "aesthetic preference". Although feature descriptors calculated from curvature can be used to quantify "complexity", the selection guidelines for curvature and feature descriptors have not been adequately discussed. Therefore, this study aimed to conduct a systematic classification of curvature and a feature descriptor of 3D shapes and to apply the results to the "complexity" quantification. First, we surveyed the literature on curvature and feature descriptors and conducted a systematic classification. To quantify "complexity", we used five curvatures (Gaussian curvature, mean curvature, Casorati curvature, shape index, and curvature index) and a feature descriptor (entropy of occurrence probability) obtained from the classification and compared them with the sensory evaluation values of "complexity". The results showed that the determination coefficient between the quantified and sensory evaluation values of "complexity" was highest when the mean curvature was used. In addition, the Casorati curvature tended to show the highest signal-to-noise ratio (i.e., a high determination coefficient irrespective of the parameters set in the entropy calculation). These results will foster the development of generative design of 3D shapes using psychological evaluation.

The detection of elementary carriers in transport phenomena is one of the most important keys to understand nontrivial properties of strongly correlated quantum matter. Here, we propose a method to identify the tunneling current carrier in strongly interacting fermions from nonequilibrium noise in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer to Bose-Einstein condensate crossover. The noise-to-current ratio, the Fano factor, can be a crucial probe for the current carrier. Bringing strongly correlated fermions into contact with a dilute reservoir produces a tunneling current in between. The associated Fano factor increases from one to two as the interaction becomes stronger, reflecting the fact that the dominant conduction channel changes from the quasiparticle tunneling to the pair tunneling.

During myocardial infarction (MI), cardiac cells at the infarcted area undergo cell death. In response, cardiac myofibroblasts, which are mainly differentiated from resident fibroblasts upon inflammation, produce extracellular matrix proteins such as collagen to fill the damaged areas of the heart to prevent cardiac rupture. In this study, we identified a cardioprotective role of G-protein-coupled receptor kinase 5 (GRK5) in MI. GRK5 expression was found to increase in the mouse heart after MI and was highly expressed in cardiac fibroblasts/myofibroblasts. In fibroblasts/myofibroblasts, GRK5 promoted the expression of inflammation-related genes through nuclear factor-κB activation, leading to an increase in the expression levels of fibrosis-related genes. Bone marrow transfer experiments confirmed that GRK5 in fibroblasts/myofibroblasts, but not in infiltrated macrophages in the infarcted area, is mainly responsible for GRK5-mediated inflammation in infarcted hearts. In addition, inflammation and fibrosis at the infarcted area were significantly suppressed in GRK5 knockout mice, resulting in increased mortality compared with that in wild-type mice. These data indicate that GRK5 in cardiac fibroblasts/myofibroblasts promotes inflammation and fibrosis to ameliorate the damage after MI.

An appropriate level of arousal induces positive emotions, and a high arousal potential may provoke negative emotions. To explain the effect of arousal on emotional valence, we propose a novel mathematical framework of arousal potential variations in the dual process of human cognition: automatic and controlled. A suitable mathematical formulation to explain the emotions in the dual process is still absent. Our model associates free energy with arousal potential and its variations to explain emotional valence. Decreasing and increasing free energy consequently induce positive and negative emotions, respectively. We formalize a transition from the automatic to the controlled process in the dual process as a change of Bayesian prior. Further, we model emotional valence using free energy increase (FI) when one tries changing one's Bayesian prior and its reduction (FR) when one succeeds in recognizing the same stimuli with a changed prior and define three emotions: "interest," "confusion," and "boredom" using the variations. The results of our mathematical analysis comparing various Gaussian model parameters reveals the following: (1) prediction error (PR) increases FR (representing "interest") when the first prior variance is greater than the second prior variance, (2) PR decreases FR when the first prior variance is less than the second prior variance, and (3) the distance between priors' means always increases FR. We also discuss the association of the outcomes with emotions in the controlled process. The proposed mathematical model provides a general framework for predicting and controlling emotional valence in the dual process that varies with viewpoint and stimuli, as well as for understanding the contradictions in the effects of arousal on the valence.

OBJECTIVE: We previously investigated the preclinical state of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH): asymptomatic ventriculomegaly with features of iNPH on magnetic resonance imaging (AVIM) found in community inhabitants. The aim of the study was to determine how iNPH develops longitudinally. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A previous longitudinal prospective community-based cohort study was initiated in 2000. The 271 70 year-old participants were followed up in 2016 at the age of 86 years. At this time, 104 participants could be reached for clinical examinations and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). iNPH in this study was diagnosed if the participant had more than one symptom in the clinical triad and disproportionately enlarged subarachnoid space hydrocephalus (DESH) on MRI, fulfilling at least an Evans index >0.3 (ventricular enlargement, VE) and a narrowing of the subarachnoid space at the high convexity (tight high convexity, THC). Asymptomatic VE (AVE) plus THC were considered AVIM. RESULTS: Longitudinally throughout 16 years, 11 patients with iNPH were found. The hospital consultation rate was only 9%. Five of the eight patients with AVIM (62.5%) and six of 30 with AVE (20.0%) developed iNPH. Cross-sectionally, eight patients had iNPH (8/104, 7.7% prevalence at the age of 86) in 2016. Disease development was classified into THC-preceding and VE-preceding iNPH. One VE-preceding iNPH case was considered a comorbidity of Alzheimer's dementia. CONCLUSION: Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus had a high prevalence among octogenarians in the evaluated community. iNPH developed not only via AVIM but also via AVE, the latter was also frequent in the elderly.

This study examined the similarities/differences between the social phenotypes of Williams syndrome (WS) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). As cultural norms may affect symptom evaluation, this study administered the Social Responsiveness Scale-2 to Japanese individuals with WS (n = 78, 4.4-44.0 years) and ASD (n = 75, 4.7-55.4 years). The scores for Social Motivation and Social Communication were significantly more severe in the ASD than WS group. Overall, the similarities and differences between the social phenotypes of the syndromes were consistent with the findings of a recent study conducted in the UK, except for the social awareness subscale score. This highlights the importance of cross-cultural investigations of WS and ASD.

Atypical sensory features are frequently observed in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as uncontrollable and less predictable sensory stimuli are thought to be stressful for them. To quantify distal indicators of cardiac vagus nerve activity, which is associated with top-down self-regulatory capacity, during sensory tasks as a stress state in children with ASD, we conducted an exploratory study to measure phasic high-frequency components of heart rate variability (phasic HF-HRV) during less controllable tactile/auditory sensory tasks in 37 children with ASD (aged 6-12 years) and 37 typically developing (TD) children. Only children with ASD showed increased HF-HRV values from the resting state to the task (i.e., phasic HF-HRV augmentation) during both less controllable tactile/auditory sensory tasks. In TD children, decreased phasic HF-HRV values were observed to cope with the task demand during the less-controllable-tactile task. These findings suggest that increased phasic HF-HRV values in response to less controllable sensory stimuli may reflect atypical physiological regulation during sensory stimulation in children with ASD.

Little is known about the trajectory patterns and sex differences in adaptive behaviors in the general population. We examined the trajectory classes of adaptive behaviors using a representative sample and examined whether the class structure and trajectory patterns differed between females and males. We further explored sex differences in neurodevelopmental traits in each latent class. Participants (n = 994) were children in the Hamamatsu Birth Cohort for Mothers and Children (HBC Study)-a prospective birth cohort study. Adaptive behaviors in each domain of communication, daily living skills, and socialization were evaluated at five time points when participants were 2.7, 3.5, 4.5, 6, and 9 years old using the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales-Second Edition. Parallel process multigroup latent class growth analysis extracted sex-specific trajectory classes. Neurodevelopmental traits of children at age 9, autistic traits, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) traits, and cognitive ability were examined for females and males in each identified class. A 4-class model demonstrated the best fit. Moreover, a 4-class model that allowed for differences in class probabilities and means of growth parameters between females and males provided a better fit than a model assuming no sex differences. In the communication domain, females scored higher than their male counterparts in all four classes. In the daily living skills and socialization domains, the two higher adaptive classes (Class 1: females, 18.6%; males, 17.8%; Class 2: females, 48.8%; males, 49.8%) had similar trajectories for males and females, whereas in the two lower adaptive behavior classes (Class 3: females, 27.5%; males, 29.4%; Class 4: females, 5.1%; males, 3.0%), females had higher adaptive scores than their male counterparts. In Class 4, females were more likely to have autistic and ADHD traits exceeding the cutoffs, while males were more likely to have below-average IQ. Different trajectories in females and males suggest that adaptive skills may require adjustment based on the sex of the child, when standardizing scores, in order to achieve better early detection of skill impairment.

It is unclear whether neurodevelopmental progress from infancy to early childhood remains stable. Moreover, little is known about the risk factors, if any, affecting neurodevelopmental descending transition patterns and the relationship between these patterns and later childhood adaptive behaviours. We used data of 875 children from the Hamamatsu Birth Cohort Study in Japan. Children's neurodevelopment at 18 and 32 months and adaptive behaviours at 40 months were evaluated. Perinatal factors and infant overweight status at 18 months were investigated to identify descending-transition-associated risk factors. In the latent transition analysis, ultimately, three classes were identified for each time-point, resulting in nine transition patterns; among them, 10.4% of children showed descending class shifts (normal to delayed class). Such decelerated growth was predicted by maternal pre-pregnancy overweight status (odds ratio [OR] 2.49; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.23, 5.02), low maternal educational history (OR 1.20; 95% CI 1.04, 1.36), and infant overweight status at 18 months (OR 5.89; 95% CI 1.26, 27.45). Children with descending transition showed poor functioning in adaptive behaviours at the age of 40 months. To prevent subsequent poor adaptive functioning, it may be necessary to consider that a certain percentage of children show decelerated growth.

BACKGROUND: Surgery to prevent aspiration has complications related to tracheostomy tube, such as the trachea-brachiocephalic artery fistula. Glottic closure procedure makes tracheostoma at a position higher than the first ring of the trachea and theoretically has a potential to prevent such complications owing to a longer distance between the tip of tracheostomy tube and the tracheal membrane adjacent to the brachiocephalic artery. Our aim is to evaluate the safety of glottic closure in neurologically impaired patients by comparing outcomes with laryngotracheal separation. METHODS: This study is a single-center retrospective study from 2004 to 2019, using data of 15 and 12 patients who underwent glottic closure (GC) and laryngotracheal separation (LTS). The primary outcome was the incidence of postoperative complications induced by tracheostomy tube placement and adjustment of the tracheostomy tube position to prevent these complications, such as by converting to a length-adjustable tube and/or placing gauze between the skin and tube flange. Additionally, we analyzed the anatomical relationship between the tracheostomy tube tip and brachiocephalic artery and measured the distance between them using postoperative CT images. RESULTS: No patients in either group had trachea-brachiocephalic artery fistula. Erosion or granuloma formation occurred in 1 patient (7%) and 4 patients (33%) in the GC and LTS groups, respectively. Adjustment of the tracheostomy tube was needed in 2 patients (13%) and 6 patients (50%) in the GC and LTS groups. CT revealed a higher proportion of patients with the tracheostomy tube tip superior to the brachiocephalic artery in GC than LTS group. The mean tracheostoma-brachiocephalic artery distance was 40.8 and 32.4 mm in the GC and LTS groups. CONCLUSIONS: Glottic closure reduces the risk of postoperative complications related to a tracheostomy tube. This may be due to the higher position of the tracheostoma at the level of the cricoid cartilage, increasing the distance between the tracheostoma and brachiocephalic artery.

The present study investigated the therapeutic effects of the curcumin derivative 3-[(1E)-2-(1H-indol-6-yl)ethenyl]-5-[(1E)-2-[2-methoxy-4-(2-pyridylmethoxy)phenyl]ethenyl]-1H-pyrazole (GT863) in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The inhibitory effect of GT863 on superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) aggregation was evaluated in cell-free assays. GT863 interfered with the conformational changes of the SOD1 protein and later, oligomeric aggregation. Furthermore, its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects were evaluated in cell-free and cultured cell assays. GT863 inhibited H2O2- and glutamate-induced cytotoxicity and activated an antioxidant responsive element pathway. Additionally, in vivo effects of GT863 in the ALS mice model were evaluated by its oral administration to H46R mutant SOD1 transgenic mice. Rotarod test showed that GT863 administration significantly slowed the progression of motor dysfunction in the mice. In addition, GT863 substantially reduced highly-aggregated SOD1, further preserving large neurons in the spinal cord of GT863-treated mice. Collectively, these results indicated that GT863 could be a viable therapeutic agent with multiple vital actions for the treatment of ALS.

The beneficial effect of moderate physical activity (PA) on morbidity and mortality has been observed in the general population. However, the ideal intensity of PA for improving cardiovascular longevity in Japanese general population is uncertain. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the PA and cardiovascular mortality in the general population. This longitudinal cohort study included 1,826 apparently healthy subjects who participated in a community-based health checkup. There were 31 cardiovascular deaths during 10-year follow-up. Subjects were divided into 4 groups based on the quartiles of PA (low, mild, moderate and high). Kaplan-Meier analysis and multivariate Cox proportional hazard analysis demonstrated that the most favorable cardiovascular prognosis was observed in subjects with moderate PA followed by those with mild PA. High PA as well as low PA were associated with higher cardiovascular mortality compared with mild and moderate PA. Noteworthy, in subjects with high PA, Cox hazard analysis revealed that previous cardiovascular disease, smoking, brain natriuretic peptide levels, and Framingham risk score were associated with cardiovascular mortality. The results suggest a U-shaped association between cardiovascular mortality and PA. Mild to moderate PA was associated with favorable cardiovascular outcomes in the Japanese general population. High PA might be associated with poor cardiovascular outcomes in subjects with a history of heart disease and high coronary risk factors.

Cell-to-cell transmission of α-synuclein (α-syn) pathology is considered to underlie the spread of neurodegeneration in Parkinson's disease (PD). Previous studies have demonstrated that α-syn is secreted under physiological conditions in neuronal cell lines and primary neurons. However, the molecular mechanisms that regulate extracellular α-syn secretion remain unclear. In this study, we found that inhibition of monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) enzymatic activity facilitated α-syn secretion in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells. Both inhibition of MAO-B by selegiline or rasagiline and siRNA-mediated knock-down of MAO-B facilitated α-syn secretion. However, TVP-1022, the S-isomer of rasagiline that is 1000 times less active, failed to facilitate α-syn secretion. Additionally, the MAO-B inhibition-induced increase in α-syn secretion was unaffected by brefeldin A, which inhibits endoplasmic reticulum (ER)/Golgi transport, but was blocked by probenecid and glyburide, which inhibit ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter function. MAO-B inhibition preferentially facilitated the secretion of detergent-insoluble α-syn protein and decreased its intracellular accumulation under chloroquine-induced lysosomal dysfunction. Moreover, in a rat model (male Sprague Dawley rats) generated by injecting recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV)-A53T α-syn, subcutaneous administration of selegiline delayed the striatal formation of Ser129-phosphorylated α-syn aggregates, and mitigated loss of nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons. Selegiline also delayed α-syn aggregation and dopaminergic neuronal loss in a cell-to-cell transmission rat model (male Sprague Dawley rats) generated by injecting rAAV-wild-type α-syn and externally inoculating α-syn fibrils into the striatum. These findings suggest that MAO-B inhibition modulates the intracellular clearance of detergent-insoluble α-syn via the ABC transporter-mediated non-classical secretion pathway, and temporarily suppresses the formation and transmission of α-syn aggregates.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT The identification of a neuroprotective agent that slows or stops the progression of motor impairments is required to treat Parkinson's disease (PD). The process of α-synuclein (α-syn) aggregation is thought to underlie neurodegeneration in PD. Here, we demonstrated that pharmacological inhibition or knock-down of monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) in SH-SY5Y cells facilitated α-syn secretion via a non-classical pathway involving an ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter. MAO-B inhibition preferentially facilitated secretion of detergent-insoluble α-syn protein and reduced its intracellular accumulation under chloroquine-induced lysosomal dysfunction. Additionally, MAO-B inhibition by selegiline protected A53T α-syn-induced nigrostriatal dopaminergic neuronal loss and suppressed the formation and cell-to-cell transmission of α-syn aggregates in rat models. We therefore propose a new function of MAO-B inhibition that modulates α-syn secretion and aggregation.

We investigate heat transport through an assembly consisting of a two-level system coupled between two harmonic oscillators, which is described by the quantum Rabi model, as a prototype of nanoscale heat devices using controllable multi-level systems. Using the noninteracting-blip approximation, we find that the linear thermal conductance shows a characteristic temperature dependence with a two-peak structure. We also show that heat transport is sensitive to model parameters for weak system-bath coupling and strong hybridization between the two-level system and the harmonic oscillators. This property characteristic of the multi-level system is advantageous for applications such as a heat transistor, and can be examined in superconducting circuits.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the associations between psychopathological characteristics of children and adolescents with primary headache, as measured by the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), and treatment outcomes. METHODS: A cohort study was conducted on 124 pediatric patients with primary headache. At the first consultation, the SDQ was completed by the parents. The analysis of treatment efficacy was conducted on 90 patients with a follow-up period of at least one year. Treatment responders were defined as those who showed 50% reduction in the headache frequency. First, an analysis of the SDQ total scores and five subscales, among the migraine and tension-type headache groups, was conducted for 124 participants. Second, the association between the SDQ scores and treatment outcomes in the groups with periods of improvement of less than three months and three months or more were analyzed in 90 patients. RESULTS: Migraine patients displayed more difficulties than strengths in terms of the total score (p = .004) and in the emotional symptoms subscale (p = .012) compared with tension-type headache patients. Migraine patients who required more than three months to show improvement displayed more peer problems (p = .020), while tension-type headache patients who required more than three months to show improvement displayed fewer conduct problems (p = .007). CONCLUSION: Evaluation of patient characteristics using the SDQ at first consultation can predict the treatment outcome. Moreover, it can help provide appropriate initial treatment and improve outcome of primary headache in children.
