RESUMEN

More than 80% of the Japanese population had received the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination by the end of April 2023; however, this vaccination rate continues to decline along with the need for booster shots. Further, the vaccines may not permanently be available free of charge. This study conducted a survey to determine the public's willingness to pay for the COVID-19 vaccine in Japan. Using an internet research panel, the questionnaire collected data on various sociodemographic variables and the respondents' willingness to pay for COVID-19 vaccines. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression analysis were used to evaluate the respondents' answers. The results showed that of 1100 respondents, 55.2% would not want to receive the vaccine if it was paid for. A total of 44.8% respondents expressed willingness to pay, with most (170 respondents) willing to pay for 1000-1999 JPY (7.1-14.2 USD). Logistic regression analysis revealed that age, educational status, history of contracting COVID-19, and COVID-19 vaccination frequency were significantly associated with those who were willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccine if it was free (p < 0.05). These findings provide valuable insights for the Japanese government in determining appropriate pricing strategies to promote COVID-19 vaccination effectively.

Chronic stress induces psychological and physiological changes that may have negative sequelae for health and well-being. In this study, the skeletal muscles of male C57BL/6 mice subjected to repetitive water-immersion restraint stress to model chronic stress were examined. In chronically stressed mice, serum corticosterone levels significantly increased, whereas thymus volume and bone mineral density decreased. Further, body weight, skeletal muscle mass, and grip strength were significantly decreased. Histochemical analysis of the soleus muscles revealed a significant decrease in the cross-sectional area of type 2b muscle fibers. Although type 2a fibers also tended to decrease, chronic stress had no impact on type 1 muscle fibers. Chronic stress increased the expression of REDD1, FoxO1, FoxO3, KLF15, Atrogin1, and FKBP5, but did not affect the expression of myostatin or myogenin. In contrast, chronic stress resulted in a decrease in p-S6 and p-4E-BP1 levels in the soleus muscle. Taken together, these results indicate that chronic stress promotes muscle atrophy by inhibiting mammalian targets of rapamycin complex 1 activity due to the upregulation of its inhibitor, REDD1.

Despite considerable interest in the Japanese population in receiving the vaccine for COVID-19 when it first became available, a sizable percentage of people remain unwilling or hesitant to be vaccinated. Concerns among both the vaccinated and the unwilling center on the vaccine's efficacy and its safety. Thus, this study aimed to identify whether the willingness to receive COVID-19 vaccination is related to the sources of information people use to learn about the vaccine. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 800 participants registered in an Internet research panel across Japan who completed a questionnaire on their sources of information about the vaccine, demographics, and vaccination status. Vaccine willingness/hesitancy and refusal were set as dependent variables in the logistic regression analysis, with sources of vaccine information and other socio-demographic variables set as independent variables. The results of the analysis found that the information sources significantly associated with willingness to vaccinate were TV (AOR 2.44 vs. vaccine refusal/hesitation), summary websites of COVID-19 by non-experts (AOR 0.21, vs. vaccine refusal/hesitation), Internet video sites (AOR 0.33, vs. vaccine refusal/hesitation), and the personal websites of doctors (AOR 0.16, vs. vaccine refusal/hesitation). Given the likelihood of misinformation in non-traditional sources of information, it is important that health communications be accurate and persuasive.

Introduction Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine hesitancy has become a global problem. Therefore, we aimed to determine the relationship between the information sources on vaccines and the willingness of people to be vaccinated in Thailand. Methods A sample of 500 respondents was drawn from an Internet research panel, and a questionnaire survey was administered to evaluate respondents' willingness to be vaccinated by sex, age group, educational background, occupation, and presence of chronic diseases, as well as their information sources on COVID-19 vaccines. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression analysis were employed to assess the relationship between vaccine hesitancy/refusal and other variables. Results Our results demonstrated that 90.2% of the participants were either willing to vaccinate or were already vaccinated. By contrast, 6.0% were hesitant and 3.8% did not want to be vaccinated. Females, people with education less than master's/bachelor's degree or high school, day laborers, housewives, and unemployed were significantly related to vaccine hesitation/refusal. Furthermore, they were less likely than the vaccine willingness group to use information resources from the Ministry of Health, public health centers, or medical associations. Conclusions As vaccine hesitancy and refusal ratio were found to be substantially lower than in a previous study for Thailand and other countries, public authorities should poll the public to identify vaccine-hesitant populations and their reasoning and provide appropriate information directly to the general public.

Given the urgent global need for vaccinating individuals of all ages against the COVID-19 pandemic, understanding the extent and reasons for parents' willingness to get their children vaccinated is important. This study used an internet-based questionnaire survey to determine parents' willingness to get their children (0 to 15 years) vaccinated in Japan and was conducted in April 2021 before COVID-19 vaccination for children began. Socio-demographic information, information about parents' willingness to get children vaccinated, reasons for their responses, and parents' willingness to get themselves vaccinated were obtained. Descriptive statistics were used to evaluate parents' willingness to get children vaccinated based on the other variables. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify the characteristics of parents who indicated willingness to get their children vaccinated and to identify the reasons for vaccine willingness. Of the 1100 respondents, 472 were willing to get children vaccinated, 470 were not sure, and 158 did not want to get children vaccinated. Considerable differences were found in the willingness to get children vaccinated across gender, age groups, occupation, annual income, respondent's academic background, and respondent's willingness to get COVID-19 vaccination for themselves. Reasons for being unsure about the vaccination included the vaccine's potential side effects (84.9%), uncertainty about vaccine safety (54.7%), and not trusting vaccine efficiency (25.7%). Parents' willingness to get the COVID-19 vaccine for themselves was a significant factor for their willingness to get children vaccinated after adjusting all other factors. The study recommends disseminating more and correct information to the public to increase vaccine willingness.

BACKGROUND: The number of adults aged over 65 years is rapidly increasing in several Southeast Asian countries. Muscle mass decreases with age, leading to sarcopenia. The primary objective of this study was to determine whether differences exist in the body composition and physical strength, according to ethnicity, among community-dwelling Japanese and Thai older adults living in Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. METHODS: A survey was conducted in February and March 2019. Japanese and Thai adults aged ≥ 60 years living in Chiang Mai Province were recruited through community clubs. Participants completed a self-administered questionnaire that enabled collection of data on age, sex, educational background, marital status, annual income, current medical conditions, smoking and alcohol consumption, and exercise habits. Measurements were collected on height, weight, body composition, blood pressure, hand grip, and walking speed for 6 m. Body composition was measured using a standing-posture 8-electrode multifrequency bioimpedance analysis analyzer. Hand grip of each hand was measured with the patient in the standing position using a digital grip dynamometer. Multivariable logistic regression was used to determine factors associated with skeletal muscle mass index (SMI). RESULTS: Of the total 119 participants, 47 were Japanese (26 men, 21 women) and 72 were Thai (16 men, 56 women). The prevalence of a low SMI was 3/26 (12%), 1/21 (5%), 6/16 (38%), and 5/56 (9%) among Japanese men, Japanese women, Thai men, and Thai women, respectively. The prevalence of low muscle strength was 2/26 (8%), 2/21 (10%), 3/16 (19%), and 13/56 (23%) among Japanese men, Japanese women, Thai men, and Thai women, respectively. There were significant differences between ethnic groups in body mass index for both sexes, percentage body fat in women, SMI in men, and average grip strength in men. Ethnic group, sex, age, and body mass index were independent predictors of SMI. CONCLUSIONS: Ethnicity had a clinically important effect on body composition and physical strength among older Japanese and Thai adults living in a similar environment.

This study aimed to establish the quality of life and mental health status among older Japanese people living in Chiang Mai, Thailand. We conducted a questionnaire survey among Japanese retired people aged 50 years or over who had been living in Thailand. The questionnaire covered socio-demographic variables including health status and ability to communicate in Thai. We measured mental health status using the Japanese version of the General Health Questionnaire-28 (GHQ-28) and quality of life using the Japanese version of EuroQOL-5D-3L. We explored the factors associated with poor mental health and quality of life using logistic regression analysis. In total, 96 (89.7%)participants provided complete responses. Overall, quality of life was generally good, although those with one or more chronic diseases reported significantly lower quality of life. Having one or more chronic diseases and being aged 70-79 were significantly associated with poorer mental health. In total, 21 (21.8%) respondents had a possible neurosis, which was defined as a total GHQ-28 score of more than 6. The logistic regression analysis showed a significant association between possible neurosis and the presence of chronic diseases (adjusted odds ratio: 11.7 1). Quality of life among older Japanese people living in Chiang Mai was generally good, but there was a high level of possible neurosis, especially among those with one or more chronic diseases.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccines are being developed by many countries for the safety of their population. However, people of various nations have revealed hesitancy towards being vaccinated, citing reasons such as side effects, safety, a lack of trust in vaccine effectiveness, etc. This study aimed to explore the willingness of people in Japan to be vaccinated or not be vaccinated and the reasons for either decision. A sample of 1100 respondents was drawn from an internet research panel, and a questionnaire survey was administered to evaluate their willingness to be vaccinated by gender, age group, place of living, and underlying illness history. After using descriptive statistics and the chi-squared test to evaluate categorical variables, 65.7% of the participants indicated a willingness to be vaccinated; among them were older age groups, those in rural areas, and those with underlying medical conditions. In addition, males showed less hesitancy towards being vaccinated. Although selectivity bias exists, this study is the first to examine the willingness of Japanese people to be vaccinated. Since vaccine hesitancy and refusal ratio were found to be higher in Japan than in other countries, policy efforts are needed to make the country's vaccination program viable.

The aging population is rapidly increasing worldwide. Sarcopenia is a common and important health problem among older people. The prevalence of sarcopenia among older Thai adults is increasing. Exercise intervention for sarcopenia prevention may significantly improve muscle strength, body balance, and muscle mass. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of a simple resistance intervention (SRI) program in preventing sarcopenia on physiological outcomes among community-dwelling older Thai adults. This study was a 12-week randomized controlled trial, which included 80 community-dwelling older adults in Chiang Mai, Thailand, who were randomly assigned into control (40 participants who performed usual exercise) and intervention (40 participants who performed the SRI program) groups. The SRI program was a home-based program consisting of 30 min of resistance exercise three times/week for 12 weeks, health education on sarcopenia. After 12 weeks, all physiological outcomes were measured and were significantly improved in the intervention group compared with baseline; hand grip, skeletal muscle mass index, and walking speed were significantly improved in the intervention group compared with the control group. Based on our results, the SRI program may prevent muscle weakness in community-dwelling older people in Thailand.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccination is recommended for health-care professionals because of their frequent contact with blood. At one medical school, new students undergo HBV antibody tests upon admission, and antibody-negative individuals receive the HBV vaccine. We aimed to characterize individuals who remained antibody negative after HBV vaccination. Between 2009 and 2017, we enrolled 1064 first-year students from a medical school where their HBV antibody test and vaccination records remained. We analyzed data regarding the hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs) test record during admission, vaccination record for antibody-negative participants, anti-HBs test result after completing the three vaccination doses, drug name of the vaccine used, sex, body mass index (BMI), and age. We calculated the yearly percentage of antibody-negative individuals and analyzed the characteristics of vaccine-refractory cases by logistic regression analysis. Of the 1064 participants, 999 were initially antibody negative. They were vaccinated with HBV thrice and tested for antibodies after vaccination. The average age of participants was 20.1 y, with 677 males. Although the type of vaccine has been changed since 2016, the average rate of refractoriness from 2009 to 2015 was 6.9% per year and 18.6% after 2016. Logistic regression analyses showed that sex (male vs. female; OR, 1.787), BMI (OR. 1.171), and vaccine type (genotype A vs. genotype C: OR, 3.144) were significant factors associated with antibody-negative individuals. Vaccine type differences altered the proportion of antibody-refractory individuals, with no association with age. The data on vaccine refractoriness will be continuously analyzed in the future while considering other factors.

The Wnt/ß-catenin signaling and TGFß signaling pathways play a key role in osteoblast differentiation. The miRNAs play important roles in regulating gene expression at the post-transcriptional level through fine-tuning of protein-encoding gene expression. However, involvement of miRNAs is not established for Wnt3a and TGFß signaling pathways in osteoblast differentiation. Here, we examined the role of miRNAs expressed differentially after Wnt3a expression during osteoblast differentiation. Over-expression of the Wnt3a gene increased ALP transcription, but decreased Col1, Runx2, and OCN transcription in osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells. Expression profiling and quantitative PCR for miRNAs showed that miR-140-3p decreased in Wnt3a-over-expressing osteoblastic cells. Wnt3a over-expression increased TGFß3 expression, whereas transfection of the miR-140-3p mimic into MC3T3-E1 cells significantly inhibited TGFß3 expression. Luciferase assay for the TGFß3 transcript showed that TGFß3 was a direct target of miR-140-3p. miR-140-3p mimic transfection resulted in significantly increased OCN transcription, but did not affect ALP, Col1, and Runx2 transcription in MC3T3-E1 cells. rTGFß3 treatment decreased OCN transcription in MC3T3-E1 cells. These results suggest that the miR-140-3p is involved in osteoblast differentiation as a critical regulatory factor between Wnt3a and TGFß3 signaling pathways.

BACKGROUND: A man-made chemical disaster occurred in the Amur River, leading to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the Nanai people indigenous to the river's surrounding area. PTSD severity measured by the total scores of Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) (Total-I) and Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS) (Total-C) were not always identical in terms of demographic and ethnocultural characters. It is possible that the results derived using the Total-I and Total-C may differ for persons with different backgrounds and/or individual characteristics. In this study, the associations between PTSD severity and personal characteristics were evaluated. METHODS: The study was a field-type survey including 187 randomly selected participants (75 males and 112 females). In addition to Total-I/Total-C, scores for each IES-R/CAPS item, Intrusion, Avoidance, and Hyperarousal, and Ego Structure Test by Ammon (ISTA) score were examined to evaluate their personal characteristics. RESULTS: No specific trends in ISTA score were obvious among four groups defined according to Total-I/Total-C. The results of principal component analysis showed that all IES-R/CAPS items contributed positively to the 1st axis but to the 2nd axis in a different manner. ISTA items did not always show correlations to each other, but principal component analysis suggested that Construct contributed positively and Destruct and Deficient (with the exception of Destruct sexuality) contributed negatively. High IES-R scores were associated with Construct Aggression and Deficient Inner demarcation, but high CAPS score was less likely to exhibit Construct Narcissism. CONCLUSION: To avoid the misdiagnosis of PTSD, usage of both IES-R/CAPS may be required. Simultaneous application of personality/ego tests may be helpful, but appropriate numbers of their questions would be important.

The aim of the present study was to determine the molecular basis of the beneficial effects of genistein and/or menaquinone­4 (MK­4) on bone quality. Initially, 1 µM genistein was applied to MC3T3­E1 cells for 24 h and the upregulated mRNAs that were detected by microarray were selected for further examination by reverse transcription­quantitative­polymerase chain reaction. Among them, alterations were observed in the level of GATA­binding protein 6 (GATA6), Notch gene homolog 2 (NOTCH2), Wnt family member 5A (WNT5A), bone γ­carboxyglutamate protein (BGLAP), chondroadherin (CHAD), dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4), ectonucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase 2 (ENPP2), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) 3 and ATPase phospholipid­transporting 11A (ATP11A) in response to treatment with 0.1 µM 17­ß­estradiol, 1 µM genistein, and/or 1 µM MK­4. GATA6, NOTCH2 and WNT5A are considered to be associated with osteoclast, but not osteoblast, function; however, increases in osteoblastic mRNAs, including BGLAP and CHAD, were observed in each of the treatment groups at 48 h. Immunocytochemical analysis confirmed an increase in CHAD and DPP4 proteins following the administration of genistein + MK­4. Furthermore, genistein + MK­4 led to alterations in cell morphology to spindle or oval shapes, and increased the intensity of ALP staining. Although the level of ALP mRNA was not consistently altered in response to the treatments, a marked increase in ALP activity was observed following 96 h treatment with genistein + MK­4. Therefore, the simultaneous intake of genistein and MK­4 appears to be beneficial for the maintenance of bone quality.

Vitamin K2 (VK2) has been used as a therapeutic agent for osteoporosis, since it has been suggested to be able to reduce the frequency of fractures by improving bone quality; however, bone turnover is strictly regulated by various cytokines and hormones. In the present study, the effect of menaquinone-4 (MK-4) on bone turnover was investigated using the senescence-accelerated mouse prone 6 (SAMP6) strain. Since water-immersion restraint stress (WRS) causes a significant decrease in bone mineral density (BMD), WRS was used as the bone resorption model in the SAMP6 strain. Six-week-old SAMP6 male mice were divided into the following three groups: Control, WRS and WRS + MK-4. WRS was performed for 6 h per day, 5 times a week, for 4 weeks. Following WRS, MK-4 (30 mg/kg) was injected subcutaneously 3 times a week for 4 weeks. No growth retardation was observed in the WRS groups as compared with the control group. In the WRS groups, the BMD was significantly lower than that in the control group. The levels of bone formation and resorption markers were increased in the WRS groups, indicating that WRS reduced the BMD by promoting high bone turnover. A bone histomorphometrical examination showed that the trabecular (Tb) bone mass in the secondary spongiosa at the distal femur was significantly reduced in the WRS mice, and this reduction was abrogated by MK-4 treatment. Specifically, the Tb bone reduction was caused by the activation of osteoclasts (Ocs), and Oc activity was suppressed by MK-4. The number of osteoblasts and the mineral apposition rate were significantly increased in the WRS and WRS + MK-4 mice, suggesting that WRS triggered a significantly higher mineral apposition rate. These results indicate that MK-4 can induce recovery from the bone mineral loss caused by WRS treatment. Further studies are required to clarify the association between bone quality and MK-4.

OBJECTIVES: Indonesia is ranked as the 4th highest contributor to tuberculosis (TB) in the world. Semarang District in Central Java displays extremely low case detection rate (CDR), possibly contributing to the local prevalence of TB. METHODS: A case-control study was performed to explore the factors that cause such low CDR. We recruited 129 TB cases and 83 controls that visited the same centers and were not diagnosed with TB. RESULTS: The cases had 7.5 ± 2.3 symptoms/person on average, indicating the delay in diagnosis because the controls only displayed 1.0 ± 1.7. The multiple logistic regression analysis comparing the cases/controls extracted following factors as a risk to have TB: farmer, close contact with TB patients, ignorance of whether Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) was accepted or no, smoking, low income, a lot of people living in the same room, irregular hand wash before meals, not wash hands after blow, soil floor, and no sunlight and no ventilation in the house. CONCLUSIONS: Neither the cases nor the controls knew the symptoms and how to avoid TB infection, which probably caused the delay in diagnosis. It is difficult to change the current living conditions. Thus, the amendment of the community-based education program of TB seems to be required.

INTRODUCTION: Female sexual function changes considerably during pregnancy and the postpartum period. In addition, women's physical and mental health, endocrine secretion, and internal and external genitalia vary during these times. However, there are limited studies on the relationship between delivery and sexual function. AIM: The present study aimed to demonstrate the association between sexual function and delivery mode. METHODS: Mothers who delivered a single baby at term were recruited for the study, and 435 mothers were analyzed. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The Female Sexual Function Questionnaire (SFQ28) scores and mothers' backgrounds were assessed at 6 months after delivery. RESULTS: The delivery mode affected the SFQ28 partner domain. Episiotomy affected the arousal (sensation) domain. Multiple regression analysis revealed that maternal age and cesarean section were significantly associated with several SHQ28 domains. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that routine episiotomies at delivery should be avoided to improve postpartum maternal sexual function. Maternal age and cesarean section were found to affect postpartum sexual health.

OBJECTIVES: Serine protease inhibitor Kazal type-5 (SPINK5) plays a crucial role in deciding the timing of desquamation of the skin. Its gene expression is limited at the very surface of the stratum granulosum (SG), whereas expression of kallikreins (KLKs) encoding proteases is usually found throughout the stratum spinosum and SG. METHODS: To explore the difference in expression regulation of these proteases/inhibitors, the function of SPINK5 promoter was examined using luciferase assay. RESULTS: Luciferase assay targeting the SPINK5 promoters (nucleotide -676/-532 and -318/-146 from the major transcription start site) showed high intensity in NHEK human keratinocyte. These two sites had neither common cis-elements nor GATA3 element but electrophoretic mobility shift assay showed similar retardation bands. Moreover, DNA footprinting did not display specific protected bands. Thus, we could not identify cis-element(s) that controlled these elements. Differentiation induced by high Ca(2+) medium failed to alter their luciferase activities. Transfection of GATA3 expressing vector significantly but slightly increased them and that of vector expressing its dominant negative form decreased. CONCLUSIONS: Although GATA3 is reportedly important for inhibition of proliferation and induction of differentiation of keratinocytes, its effect on SPINK5 expression was indirect and GATA3 alone was insufficient for final differentiation of keratinocytes where full SPINK5 expression was observed.

There is a close relationship between the central nervous system activity and bone metabolism. Therefore, methamphetamine (METH), which stimulates the central nervous system, is expected to affect bone turnover. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of METH in bone metabolism. Mice were divided into 3 groups, the control group receiving saline injections, and the 5 and 10mg/kg METH groups (n=6 in each group). All groups received an injection of saline or METH every other day for 8 weeks. Bone mineral density (BMD) was assessed by X-ray computed tomography. We examined biochemical markers and histomorphometric changes in the second cancellous bone of the left femoral distal end. The animals that were administered 5mg/kg METH showed an increased locomotor activity, whereas those receiving 10mg/kg displayed an abnormal and stereotyped behavior. Serum calcium and phosphorus concentrations were normal compared to the controls, whereas the serum protein concentration was lower in the METH groups. BMD was unchanged in all groups. Bone formation markers such as alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin significantly increased in the 5mg/kg METH group, but not in the 10mg/kg METH group. In contrast, bone resorption markers such as C-terminal telopeptides of type I collagen and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b did not change in any of the METH groups. Histomorphometric analyses were consistent with the biochemical markers data. A significant increase in osteoblasts, especially in type III osteoblasts, was observed in the 5mg/kg METH group, whereas other parameters of bone resorption and mineralization remained unchanged. These results indicate that bone remodeling in this group was unbalanced. In contrast, in the 10mg/kg METH group, some parameters of bone formation were significantly or slightly decreased, suggesting a low turnover metabolism. Taken together, our results suggest that METH had distinct dose-dependent effects on bone turnover and that METH might induce adverse effects, leading to osteoporosis.

Methamphetamine (METH) is a powerful and toxic psychostimulant that is abused worldwide. Although many studies of its toxic functions have been done on animals and humans, the mechanism is still poorly understood. In addition, the doses of METH examined have often been low. Here, we investigated the effects of intoxication due to administration of 20 mg/kg METH on neuronal activity. The mice showed hyperthermia and stereotyped behavior during 60 min after injection. We examined plasma stress hormone levels, which indicated that exposure to METH stimulated the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and caused release of stress hormones soon after injection. The maximum levels of adrenocorticotropic hormone and corticosterone occurred 10 and 60 min, respectively, after injection. We examined c-Fos protein in 16 different brain regions at 60 min post injection to identify potential brain regions subject to the stimulant effect. Nine regions, including the anterior hypothalamic area, medial preoptic area, lateral hypothalamic area, paraventricular thalamic nucleus, lateral anterior hypothalamic nucleus, lateral septum, striatum, nucleus accumbens, and amygdala, showed a significant increase in c-Fos expression, while the other seven regions did not. These results indicate that responsive neurons in the regions containing c-Fos immunoreactivity (Fos-IR) may undergo cellular reaction to high-dose METH administration. The present study provides support for a relationship among hyperthermia, the HPA axis and neuronal activities in limited brain regions on exposure to 20 mg/kg METH.

OBJECTIVES: Chemical pollution of the Amur River has seriously damaged traditions and caused posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among the Nanai, the indigenous people living along this river. This study was performed to clarify the ethnographic characteristics of PTSD in this unique population. METHODS: The study group consisted of 75 male and 112 female randomly selected volunteers. PTSD severity measured using scores of the Impact of Event Scale--Revised (Total-I) and Clinical-Administered PTSD Scale (Total-C) was estimated according to demographic and ethnocultural backgrounds, clinical status, and ethnopsychological attitudes toward the Amur River. RESULTS: The differences in averages of Total-I and Total-C were not always the same in the groups divided by ethnographic information. Logistic regression analysis with a dependent variable, possibly without PTSD (Total-I <34 and Total-C <40)/possibly with PTSD (either Total-I ≥34 or Total-C ≥40), and categorical independent variables using ethnographic information extracted a low score when 'priority values' and 'the Amur River for me is' was "profession" and a high score when 'dominant role in spousal relationship' was "self," when 'predominant forms of response in stressful situations' was "try to organize," when 'preferred method of medical treatment' was specific for the Nanai, when "rely on something mystical" was manifested, and when the Amur River was believed to be "sacred". CONCLUSION: Those with a pragmatic attitude were less likely to have PTSD. However, those who were required to make decisions within close relationships and were intimate with the Nanai tradition and the Amur River had increased likelihood of PTSD.
