RESUMEN

Muonic helium atom hyperfine structure (HFS) measurements are a sensitive tool to test the three-body atomic system and bound-state quantum electrodynamics theory, and determine fundamental constants of the negative muon magnetic moment and mass. The world's most intense pulsed negative muon beam at the Muon Science Facility of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex allows improvement of previous measurements and testing further CPT invariance by comparing the magnetic moments and masses of positive and negative muons (second-generation leptons). We report new ground-state HFS measurements of muonic helium-4 atoms at a near-zero magnetic field, performed for the first time using a small admixture of CH_{4} as an electron donor to form neutral muonic helium atoms efficiently. Our analysis gives Δν=4464.980(20) MHz (4.5 ppm), which is more precise than both previous measurements at weak and high fields. The muonium ground-state HFS was also measured under the same conditions to investigate the isotopic effect on the frequency shift due to the gas density dependence in He with CH_{4} admixture and compared with previous studies. Muonium and muonic helium can be regarded as light and heavy hydrogen isotopes with an isotopic mass ratio of 36. No isotopic effect was observed within the current experimental precision.

RESUMEN

The dimerized quantum magnet BaCuSi_{2}O_{6} was proposed as an example of "dimensional reduction" arising near the magnetic-field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) due to perfect geometrical frustration of its interbilayer interactions. We demonstrate by high-resolution neutron spectroscopy experiments that the effective intrabilayer interactions are ferromagnetic, thereby excluding frustration. We explain the apparent dimensional reduction by establishing the presence of three magnetically inequivalent bilayers, with ratios 3∶2∶1, whose differing interaction parameters create an extra field-temperature scaling regime near the QCP with a nontrivial but nonuniversal exponent. We demonstrate by detailed quantum Monte Carlo simulations that the magnetic interaction parameters we deduce can account for all the measured properties of BaCuSi_{2}O_{6}, opening the way to a quantitative understanding of nonuniversal scaling in any modulated layered system.

We report neutron scattering measurements of single-crystalline YFe_{2}Ge_{2} in the normal state, which has the same crystal structure as the 122 family of iron pnictide superconductors. YFe_{2}Ge_{2} does not exhibit long-range magnetic order but exhibits strong spin fluctuations. Like the iron pnictides, YFe_{2}Ge_{2} displays anisotropic stripe-type antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations at (π, 0, π). More interesting, however, is the observation of strong spin fluctuations at the in-plane ferromagnetic wave vector (0, 0, π). These ferromagnetic spin fluctuations are isotropic in the (H, K) plane, whose intensity exceeds that of stripe spin fluctuations. Both the ferromagnetic and stripe spin fluctuations remain gapless down to the lowest measured energies. Our results naturally explain the absence of magnetic order in YFe_{2}Ge_{2} and also imply that the ferromagnetic correlations may be a key ingredient for iron-based materials.

Many plants use colour to attract pollinators, which often possess colour vision systems well-suited for detecting flowers. Yet, to isolate the role of colour is difficult, as flowers also produce other cues. The study of florivory by Neotropical primates possessing polymorphic colour vision provides an opportunity to investigate the importance of colour directly. Here we determine whether differences in colour vision within a mixed population of wild dichromatic and trichromatic white-faced capuchins (Cebus capucinus imitator) affect flower foraging behaviours. We collected reflectance data for flower foods and modelled their chromatic properties to capuchin colour vision phenotypes. We collected behavioural data over 22 months spanning four years, determined the colour vision phenotype of each monkey based on amino acid variation of the L/M opsin gene from fecal DNA, and compared foraging behaviours of dichromats and trichromats. Most flowers were more conspicuous to trichromats, and trichromats foraged in small flower patches significantly more often. These data demonstrate a difference in wild primate foraging patterns based on colour vision differences, supporting the hypothesis that trichromacy enhances detection of small, ephemeral resources. This advantage, which may also extend to other foods, likely contributes to the maintenance of colour vision polymorphism in Neotropical monkeys.

Quantum key distribution's (QKD's) central and unique claim is information theoretic security. However there is an increasing understanding that the security of a QKD system relies not only on theoretical security proofs, but also on how closely the physical system matches the theoretical models and prevents attacks due to discrepancies. These side channel or hacking attacks exploit physical devices which do not necessarily behave precisely as the theory expects. As such there is a need for QKD systems to be demonstrated to provide security both in the theoretical and physical implementation. We report here a QKD system designed with this goal in mind, providing a more resilient target against possible hacking attacks including Trojan horse, detector blinding, phase randomisation and photon number splitting attacks. The QKD system was installed into a 45 km link of a metropolitan telecom network for a 2.5 month period, during which time the system operated continuously and distributed 1.33 Tbits of secure key data with a stable secure key rate over 200 kbit/s. In addition security is demonstrated against coherent attacks that are more general than the collective class of attacks usually considered.

J-PARC, Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex provides short pulse proton beam at a repetition rate 25Hz and the maximum power is expected to be 1MW. Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) has 23 neutron beam ports and 21 instruments have already been operated or under construction/commissioning. There are 6 inelastic/quasi-elastic neutron scattering spectrometers and the complementary use of these spectrometers will open new insight for life science. RESUMEN

Securing information in communication networks is an important challenge in today's world. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) can provide unique capabilities towards achieving this security, allowing intrusions to be detected and information leakage avoided. We report here a record high bit rate prototype QKD system providing a total of 878 Gbit of secure key data over a 34 day period corresponding to a sustained key rate of around 300 kbit/s. The system was deployed over a standard 45 km link of an installed metropolitan telecommunication fibre network in central Tokyo. The prototype QKD system is compact, robust and automatically stabilised, enabling key distribution during diverse weather conditions. The security analysis includes an efficient protocol, finite key size effects and decoy states, with a quantified key failure probability of ε = 10⁻¹°.

BACKGROUND: The significance of lymphovascular invasion (LVI) remains controversial, and the association of LVI with biochemical relapse was investigated in men treated with radical prostatectomy according to pathological results. METHODS: Data from 1268 patients undergoing radical prostatectomy between 2000 and 2009 were retrospectively reviewed. Clinicopathological variables were compared between LVI-negative and LVI-positive patients. Multivariate analyses by Cox proportional hazard model and Kaplan-Meier method were performed to identify risk factors for biochemical relapse in all patients, patients with pT2N0 and pT2N0 negative resection margin (RM). RESULTS: LVI information was available in 1160 cases, and LVI was seen in 121 cases (10.4%). Clinicopathological variables were significantly worse in LVI-positive patients than in LVI-negative patients. On multivariate analyses, PSA⩾10 ng ml(-1), pathological Gleason score ⩾8, pathological T stage ⩾3, lymph node metastasis, positive RM and LVI were independent predictors for biochemical relapse in all patients. In patients with pT2N0, PSA⩾10 ng ml(-1), pathological Gleason score ⩾8, positive RM and LVI were independent predictors for biochemical relapse. In patients with pT2N0 negative RM, LVI and pathological Gleason score ⩾8 were independent predictors for biochemical relapse (LVI; hazard ratio 3.809, 95% confidence interval 1.900-7.635, P-value<0.001, Gleason score ⩾8; hazard ratio 2.189, 95% confidence interval 1.199-3.999, P-value=0.011). With a median follow-up of 50 months, 5-year biochemical relapse-free survival in patients with pT2N0 negative RM was 95.7% in those with negative LVI in comparison to 85.3% in those with positive LVI (P<0.001, log rank). CONCLUSIONS: LVI was consistently a significant predictor for biochemical relapse after radical prostatectomy in not only all patients but also in patients with pT2N0 and pT2N0 negative RM. These results strongly support the significance of LVI as a predictor for biochemical relapse.

Spin fluctuations were studied over a wide momentum (ℏQ) and energy (E) space in the frustrated d-electron heavy-fermion metal LiV_{2}O_{4} by time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering. We observed the overall Q-E evolutions near the characteristic Q=0.6 Å^{-1} peak and found another weak broad magnetic peak around 2.4 Å^{-1}. The data are described by a simple response function, a partially delocalized magnetic form factor, and antiferromagnetic short-range spatial correlations, indicating that heavy-fermion formation is attributable to spin-orbit fluctuations with orbital hybridization.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) experiments were conducted on two hydrated DNA dodecamers with distinct deformability: 5'CGCG[under AATT]̲CGCG3' and 5'CGCG[under TTAA]̲CGCG3'. The former is known to be rigid and the latter to be flexible. The mean-square displacements of DNA dodecamers exhibit so-called dynamical transition around 200-240 K for both sequences. To investigate the DNA-sequence-dependent dynamics, the dynamics of DNA and hydration water above the transition temperature were examined using both MD simulations and QENS experiments. The fluctuation amplitude of the AATT central tetramer is smaller, and its relaxation time is longer, than that observed in TTAA, suggesting that the AT step is kinetically more stable than TA. The sequence-dependent local base pair step dynamics correlates with the kinetics of breaking the hydrogen bond between DNA and hydration water. The sequence-dependent DNA base pair step fluctuations appear above the dynamical transition temperature. Together with these results, we conclude that DNA deformability is related to the local dynamics of the base pair steps, themselves coupled to hydration water in the minor groove.

We demonstrate the existence of the spin-nematic interactions in an easy-plane type antiferromagnet Ba2CoGe2O7 by exploring the magnetic anisotropy and spin dynamics. The combination of neutron scattering and magnetic susceptibility measurements reveals that the origin of the in-plane anisotropy is an antiferro-type interaction of the spin-nematic operator. The relation between the nematic operator and the electric polarization in the ligand symmetry of this compound is presented. The introduction of the spin-nematic interaction is useful to understand the physics of spin and electric dipole in multiferroic compounds.

The guppy is known to exhibit remarkable interindividual variations in spectral sensitivity of middle to long wavelength-sensitive (M/LWS) cone photoreceptor cells. The guppy has four M/LWS-type opsin genes (LWS-1, LWS-2, LWS-3 and LWS-4) that are considered to be responsible for this sensory variation. However, the allelic variation of the opsin genes, particularly in terms of their absorption spectrum, has not been explored in wild populations. Thus, we examined nucleotide variations in the four M/LWS opsin genes as well as blue-sensitive SWS2-B and ultraviolet-sensitive SWS1 opsin genes for comparison and seven non-opsin nuclear loci as reference genes in 10 guppy populations from various light environments in Trinidad and Tobago. For the first time, we discovered a potential spectral variation (180 Ser/Ala) in LWS-1 that differed at an amino acid site known to affect the absorption spectra of opsins. Based on a coalescent simulation of the nucleotide variation of the reference genes, we showed that the interpopulation genetic differentiation of two opsin genes was significantly larger than the neutral expectation. Furthermore, this genetic differentiation was significantly related to differences in dissolved oxygen (DO) level, and it was not explained by the spatial distance between populations. The DO levels are correlated with eutrophication that possibly affects the color of aquatic environments. These results suggest that the population diversity of opsin genes is significantly driven by natural selection and that the guppy could adapt to various light environments through color vision changes.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence suggests that obesity is associated with tumor progression in prostate cancer (PCa) patients after radical prostatectomy (RP). We conducted a retrospective multicenter study to determine the effect of body mass index (BMI) on the clinicopathological characteristics and biochemical recurrence of PCa in Japanese men who underwent RP. METHODS: The medical records of 1257 men with PCa treated by RP without neoadjuvant therapy at four medical institutes between 2001 and 2009 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were categorized into four groups using the World Health Organization (WHO) BMI classification and BMI quartiles. Associations of the various BMI categories with clinicopathological characteristics and biochemical recurrences were statistically evaluated. Biochemical recurrence was defined as a PSA level of >0.2 ng ml(-1). RESULTS: Of the 1257 patients, 230 (18.3%) experienced biochemical recurrence during the median follow-up period of 49 months. The median BMI was 23.8 kg m(-2), and 1.4% patients were underweight, 65.4% were of normal weight, 30.9% were overweight and 2.4% were obese (WHO classification). Preoperative PSA levels and PSA density (PSAD) tended to decrease as BMI increased. Pathological characteristics did not differ significantly among BMI categories. As per the WHO classification and quartile categories, biochemical recurrence rate was comparable among the BMI groups. After adjusting for other pre- and postoperative covariables, multivariate Cox proportional hazards analysis revealed that a high BMI did not have an independent impact on biochemical recurrence-free survival. CONCLUSIONS: Underweight Japanese PCa patients treated by RP had higher preoperative PSA levels and PSAD. High BMI was not associated with adverse pathological findings or increased biochemical recurrence rate in Japanese PCa patients treated with RP. Racial differences may exist in the relationship between obesity and outcomes of RP in PCa patients.

Prostate cancers generally become androgen-independent and resistant to hormone therapy with progression. To understand the underlying mechanisms and facilitate the development of novel treatments for androgen-independent prostate cancer, we have investigated plasma membrane-associated sialidase (NEU3), the key enzyme for ganglioside hydrolysis participating in transmembrane signaling. We have discovered NEU3 to be upregulated in human prostate cancer compared with non-cancerous tissue, correlating with the Gleason score. NEU3 silencing with siRNA in prostate cancer PC-3 and LNCaP cells resulted in increased expression of differentiation markers and in cell apoptosis, but decrease in Bcl-2 as well as a progression-related transcription factor, early growth response gene (EGR-1). In androgen-sensitive LNCaP cells, forced overexpression of NEU3 significantly induced expression of EGR-1, androgen receptor (AR) and PSA both with and without androgen, the cells becoming sensitive to androgen. The NEU3-mediated induction was abrogated by inhibitors for PI-3 kinase and MAP kinase and more specifically by their silencing in the absence of androgen, being confirmed by increased phosphorylation of AKT and ERK1/2 in NEU3 overexpressing cells. NEU3 siRNA introduction caused reduction of cell growth of an androgen-independent PC-3 cells in culture and of transplanted tumors in nude mice. These data suggest that NEU3 regulates tumor progression through AR signaling, and thus be a potential tool for diagnosis and therapy of androgen-independent prostate cancer.

A quantum spin-liquid phase is an intriguing possibility for a system of strongly interacting magnetic units in which the usual magnetically ordered ground state is avoided owing to strong quantum fluctuations. It was first predicted theoretically for a triangular-lattice model with antiferromagnetically coupled S = 1/2 spins. Recently, materials have become available showing persuasive experimental evidence for such a state. Although many studies show that the ideal triangular lattice of S = 1/2 Heisenberg spins actually orders magnetically into a three-sublattice, non-collinear 120° arrangement, quantum fluctuations significantly reduce the size of the ordered moment. This residual ordering can be completely suppressed when higher-order ring-exchange magnetic interactions are significant, as found in nearly metallic Mott insulators. The layered molecular system κ-(BEDT-TTF)(2)Cu(2)(CN)(3) is a Mott insulator with an almost isotropic, triangular magnetic lattice of spin-1/2 BEDT-TTF dimers that provides a prime example of a spin liquid formed in this way. Despite a high-temperature exchange coupling, J, of 250 K (ref. 6), no obvious signature of conventional magnetic ordering is seen down to 20 mK (refs 7, 8). Here we show, using muon spin rotation, that applying a small magnetic field to this system produces a quantum phase transition between the spin-liquid phase and an antiferromagnetic phase with a strongly suppressed moment. This can be described as Bose-Einstein condensation of spin excitations with an extremely small spin gap. At higher fields, a second transition is found that suggests a threshold for deconfinement of the spin excitations. Our studies reveal the low-temperature magnetic phase diagram and enable us to measure characteristic critical properties. We compare our results closely with current theoretical models, and this gives some further insight into the nature of the spin-liquid phase.

To investigate the roles of G-protein receptor kinases (GRKs) in the light responses of vertebrate photoreceptors, we generated transgenic zebrafish lines, the rods of which express either cone GRK (GRK7) or rod GRK (GRK1) in addition to the endogenous GRK1, and we then measured the electrophysiological characteristics of single-cell responses and the behavioural responses of intact animals. Our study establishes the zebrafish expression system as a convenient platform for the investigation of specific components of the phototransduction cascade. The addition of GRK1 led to minor changes in rod responses. However, exogenous GRK7 in GRK7-tg animals led to lowered rod sensitivity, as occurs in cones, but surprisingly to slower response kinetics. Examination of responses to long series of very dim flashes suggested the possibility that the GRK7-tg rods generated two classes of single-photon response, perhaps corresponding to the interaction of activated rhodopsin with GRK1 (giving a standard response) or with GRK7(giving a very small response). Behavioural measurement of optokinetic responses (OKR) in intact GRK7-tg zebrafish larvae showed that the overall rod visual pathway was less sensitive, in accord with the lowered sensitivity of the rods. These results help provide an understanding for the molecular basis of the electrophysiological differences between cones and rods.

The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of combination chemotherapy with weekly paclitaxel and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) as first-line treatment in patients with advanced or recurrent gastric carcinoma. A total of 65 patients were treated with the following regimen, administered every 28 days; 5-FU 600 mg/m2 by 24-hour continuous infusion from days 1 through 5, and weekly paclitaxel 80 mg/m2 by 3-hour intravenous infusion on days 8, 14, and 21. A total of 272 cycles were conducted with a median of 4 (2-13) cycles per case. Out of 57 patients with measurable disease by RECIST criteria, there were 2 complete responses (3.5%), 20 partial responses (35.1%) and 25 cases with stable disease (43.9%). The overall response rate was 38.6% (95%CI: 26.0-51.2%). The median survival time and 1-year survival rates were 329 days and 47.4%, respectively. Both hematologic and non-hematologic toxicities were well tolerated.

RESUMEN

Quantitative PCR can be an effective method for identifying the bacteria causing mastitis. However, PCR detection is hampered by the presence of inflammatory somatic cells. To eliminate this problem, we attempted to establish methods that allow the effective separation of bacterial cells from somatic cells in mastitis milk with amino-silica. Somatic cells and Staphylococcus aureus cells have different sizes, surface structures, and overall electrical charges; therefore, their adsorption and desorption behavior on amino-silica was also different. We found that although amino-silica could efficiently adsorb both somatic cells and Staph. aureus, somatic cells were adsorbed much more strongly than bacterial cells. We identified conditions under which most of the somatic cells adsorbed and only Staph. aureus desorbed from amino-silica upon addition of a desorption solution. We demonstrated that this procedure effectively eliminated somatic cells in heavily contaminated milk samples, which resulted in improved clarity of the PCR band. These results indicate that pretreatment of the samples with amino-silica made the PCR-based strategy for identifying and quantifying disease-causing bacteria applicable for all milk samples.

AIM: Improvement of the bony incorporation of a soft-tissue graft after ACL reconstruction by local administration of Osteoprotegerin between the bone and tendon graft. METHOD: Fifteen New Zealand White rabbits underwent unilateral anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction using an autologous semitendinosis tendon graft. We compared the effect of three OPG doses (5 microg, 50 microg, or 100 microg) at the tendon-bone interface to the controls (OPG carrier) and ACL reconstruction only. Specimens were analyzed at 3 weeks using radiology, histology and histomorphometry to investigate the effect of OPG on the bony incorporation of the tendon graft. RESULTS: Animals treated with OPG 100 microg had a significant (p = 0.007) increase in newly-formed bone around the graft compared to the control group (0.16 +/- 0.01 mm(2); 0.06 +/- 0.02 mm(2)). No significant differences were found between the controls and the other groups (tendon graft only, OPG 5 microg, and 50 microg) (p > 0.05). Bone mineral density, measured in image-pixel brightness (IPB; reference range: 0-255), along the edge of the bone tunnel was greater in the OPG 100 microg group (169.5 +/- 5.9 IPB) compared to the control group (150.3 +/- 4.3 IPB) but this was not statistically significant (p = 0.083). There was a significant decrease in the number of osteoclasts per high-power microscopic fields (HPF) lining the bone tunnel in the OPG 100 microg group compared to the control group (4.4 +/- 2.5 cells/HPF; 6.4 +/- 1.8 cells/HPF) (p = 0.022). No significant differences were found between the control group and the other groups in osteoclast numbers (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Since tendon-bone healing requires new bone formation and bone ingrowth around a tendon graft, OPG may improve biologic graft fixation. A potential implication could be earlier return to function or better conditions in revision surgery.
