RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Despite its significant roles in the functions of the platysma and lower lip, the cervical branch of the facial nerve is often overlooked compared to other branches, a consideration critical for ensuring the safety of neck surgeries. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to clarify the anatomical discrepancies associated with the cervical branch of the facial nerve to enhance surgical safety. METHODS: The study utilized twenty fresh-frozen hemiheads. A two-stage surgical procedure was employed, beginning with an initial deep-plane facelift including extensive neck dissection, followed by a superficial parotidectomy on fresh frozen cadavers. This approach allowed for a thorough exploration and mapping of the cervical nerve in relation to its surrounding anatomical structures. RESULTS: Upon exiting the parotid gland, the cervical nerve consistently traveled beneath the investing layer of the deep cervical fascia for a brief distance, traversing the deep fascia to travel within the areolar connective tissue before terminating anteriorly in the platysma muscle. Single branch was observed in two cases, while two branches were noted in eighteen cases. CONCLUSIONS: The cervical nerve's relatively deeper position below the mandible's angle facilitates a safer subplatysmal dissection via a lateral approach for the release of the cervical retaining ligaments. Due to the absence of a protective barrier, the nerve is more susceptible to injuries from direct trauma or thermal damage caused by electrocautery, especially during median approaches.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE(S): Our aim is to investigate the effects of the submucoperichondrial application of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) on nasal mucosal healing after septoplasty surgery. METHOD(S): This prospective randomized observational study was conducted between July 2019 and February 2021, with 40 patients aged 18-60 years who underwent closed the only septoplasty operation for similar septal deviations. Patient divided into two group; 21 patients were placed in PRP group to which PRP was applied on all mucosal surface and submucoperichondrial area of septum and 19 patients were placed in control group to which saline solution was applied on same regions. Nasal obstruction score, mucociliary clearance time, presence of nasal crusting, and bleeding time were evaluated on 5th, 10th, 15th day after surgery and compared between groups. RESULTS: Intranasal crusting on day 10 was found to be lower in the PRP group (n:13 68.4 %) than control group (n:7 33.3 %) with a statistically significant difference (p = 0.028). The nasal obstruction score on day 10 and 15 were found to be lower in the PRP group (3,33 ± 2,75, 2,07 ± 2,20) (than the control group (5,44 ± 2,26, 3,37 ± 1,92) with a statistically significant difference (p = 0,003,p = 0,009). The mucociliary clearance rate was found to be higher and the bleeding time was found to be lower in the PRP group, but a statistically significant difference was not observed. CONCLUSIONS: Application of submucoperichondrial PRP could have beneficial effects on nasal mucosal repair, nasal crusting, and congestion after septoplasty surgery.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) are widespread metalloenzymes with the core function of catalyzing the interconversion of CO2 and HCO3-. Targeting these enzymes using selective inhibitors has emerged as a promising approach for the development of novel therapeutic agents against multiple diseases. METHOD: A series of novel thiosemicarbazones-containing derivatives were synthesized, characterized, and tested for their inhibitory activity against pharmaceutically important human CA I (hCA I), II (hCA II), IX (hCA IX), and XII (hCA XII) using the single tail approach. RESULT: The compounds generally inhibited the isoenzymes at low nanomolar concentrations, with compound 6b having Ki values of 7.16, 0.31, 92.5, and 375 nM against hCA I, II, IX and XII, respectively. Compound 6e exhibited Ki values of 27.6, 0.34, 872, and 94.5 nM against hCA I, II, IX and XII, respectively. CONCLUSION: To rationalize the inhibition data, molecular docking studies were conducted, providing insight into the binding mechanisms, molecular interactions, and selectivity of the compounds towards the isoenzymes.

RESUMEN

Easy-to-synthesize aminoquinoline (AQ) appended naphthoquinone (NQ)-based colorimetric and ratiometric probe (AQNQ) was successfully synthesized in one step with high yield and low cost, and was utilized to supply an effective solution to critical shortcomings encountered in Cu2+ analysis. The structure of AQNQ and its interaction with Cu2+ forming an unusual AQNQ-Cu complex were enlightened with single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and different spectroscopic methods. AQNQ-Cu complex is the first Cu2+ containing dinuclear crystal where the octahedral coordination sphere is fulfilled through the coordination of a NQ oxygen atom. AQNQ exhibited long-term stability (more than 1 month), superior probe ability toward Cu2+ with quite fast response (30 s), high selectivity among many ions, and limit of detection of 12.13 ppb that is significantly below the highest amount of Cu2+ allowed in drinking water established by both WHO and EPA. Ratiometric determination of Cu2+ using AQNQ was performed with high recovery and low RSD values for drinking water, tap water, lake water, cherry, and watermelon samples. Colorimetric on-site determination including smartphone and paper strip applications, IMPLICATION, and INHIBIT logic gate applications were successfully carried out. The reversibility and reusability of the response to Cu2+ ions with the paper strip application were examined for the first time.

RESUMEN

A novel method based on light-induced fabrication of a poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-polycaprolactone (PEDOT-PCL) scaffold using phenacyl bromide (PAB) as a single-component photoinitiator is presented. HBr released from the step-growth polymerization of EDOT is utilized as an in situ catalyst for the chain-growth polymerization of ε-caprolactone. Detailed investigations disclose the formation of a self-assembled nanoporous electroconductive scaffold (1.2 mS cm-1 ). Fluorescence emission spectra of the fabricated scaffold exhibit a mixed solvatochromic behavior, indicating specific interactions between the self-assembled scaffold and solvents with varying polarities, as evidenced by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Moreover, the same light-induced technique can also be applied for bulk photopolymerization showcasing the versatility and wide-ranging scope of the originated method. In brief, this study introduces a novel approach for light-induced polymerization reactions that is merging step-growth and chain-growth mechanisms. This innovative approach is promising to facilitate in situ polymerization of monomers possessing diverse functionalities.

RESUMEN

Stimuli-responsive materials with reversible supramolecular networks controlled by a change in temperature are of interest in medicine, biomedicine and analytical chemistry. For these materials to become more impactful, the development of greener synthetic practices with more sustainable solvents, lower energy consumption and a reduction in metallic catalysts is needed. In this work, we investigate the polymerisation of N-acryloyl glycinamide monomer by single-electron transfer reversible-deactivation radical polymerisation and its effect on the cloud point of the resulting PNAGA polymers. We accomplished 80% conversion within 5 min in water media using a copper wire catalyst. The material exhibited a sharp upper critical solution temperature (UCST) phase transition (10-80% transition within 6 K). These results indicate that UCST-exhibiting PNAGA can be synthesized at ambient temperatures and under non-inert conditions, eliminating the cost- and energy-consuming deoxygenation step. The choice of copper wire as the catalyst allows the possibility of catalyst recycling. Furthermore, we show that the reaction is feasible in a simple vial which would facilitate upscaling.

RESUMEN

A novel Schiff base namely 3,5-di-tert-butyl-6-((2-(perfluorophenyl)hydrazono)methyl)phenol was successfully synthesized and characterized using FT-IR and 1 H-NMR, 13 C-NMR, and 19 F-NMR. The crystal structure analysis of the Schiff base compound was also characterized with single crystal X-ray diffraction studies and supported the spectroscopic results. The cytotoxicity, anti-bacterial properties, and enzyme inhibition of the compound were also investigated. The molecular docking studies were performed in order to explain the interactions of the synthesized compound with target enzymes. The newly synthesized hydrazone derivative Schiff base compound showed high cellular toxicity on MCF-7 and PC-3 cells. Also, this compound caused low antibacterial effect on E. coli and S. aureus. Besides, the compound exhibited the inhibitory effect against pancreatic cholesterol esterase and carbonic anhydrase isoenzyme I, II with IC50 values 63, 99, and 188 µM, respectively. Consequently, it has been determined that the prepared Schiff base is an active compound in terms of cytotoxicity, enzyme inhibition, and anti-bacterial properties. These results provide preliminary information for some biological features of the compound and can play a major role in drug applications of the Schiff base compound.

RESUMEN

Base-mediated rearrangement of 1,3-dithianyl-substituted propargylamines in DMF via expansion of the dithiane ring has been reported. The rearrangement provided 9-membered amino-functionalized sulfur-containing heterocycles (dithionine derivatives) in good yields under mild conditions. Propargylamines bearing 5-membered 1,3-dithiolane and 7-membered 1,3-dithiepane rings rearranged in a similar manner yielding 8- and 10-membered S,S-heterocycles, respectively.

RESUMEN

Detection of bisulfite (HSO3-) in food and beverages has vital importance because the excessive amount leads to ill effects on the human body. Colorimetric and fluorometric chromenylium-cyanine-based chemosensor CyR was synthesized and applied for high selective and sensitive analysis of HSO3- in red wine, rose wine and, granulated sugar with high recovery ranges and very fast response time without any interference from other competitive species. The limits of detection (LOD) for the UV-Vis and fluorescence titrations were found as 11.5 µM and 3.77 µM, respectively. The on-site and very rapid methods based on paper strips and smartphone which depend on the color changes from yellow to green have been successfully developed to analyze HSO3- concentration (10-5-10-1 M for paper strip and 163-1205 µM for smartphone). CyR and the bisulfite-adduct formed in the nucleophilic addition reaction with HSO3- were verified by FT-IR, 1H NMR, and MALDI-TOF results as well as Single-Crystal X-Ray Crystallography for CyR.

RESUMEN

In recent years, tridentate nitrogen donor ligands have played a vital role in inorganic chemistry. The ease of synthesis, readily modifiable structure and high stability of 1,3-bis(2-pyridylimino)isoindole (BPIs) compounds make them suitable candidates for many potential applications. In this study, a 1,3-bis(2-pyridylimino)isoindoline derivative bearing a naphthoxy unit and its palladium complex (PdBPI) were synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, NMR, FT-IR, UV-Vis, and mass spectroscopic methods. The BPI- or PdBPI-modified pencil graphite electrodes were clarified via cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), EDX, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy. The efficiency of these substances in a vanadium redox flow battery (VRB) system was investigated for the first time. The behaviors of the BPI-modified carbon felt electrode (BPI-CF) and PdBPI-modified carbon felt electrode (PdBPI-CF) were investigated in the redox flow battery (RFB) applications. These modified electrodes were obtained by the electrodeposition method. The respective charge potentials of BPI-CF and PdBPI-CF reached 1.63 V and 1.88 V, respectively. The discharge capacity maxima obtained were ∼301 mA h (1204 mA h L-1) and ∼303 mA h (1212 mA h L-1) for BPI-CF and PdBPI-CF at the VRB system under a charge current density of 4.0 mA cm-2 and discharge current density of 0.4 mA cm-2, respectively.

RESUMEN

A new dual-channel probe based on rhodamine B derivative (MSB) was successfully designed, synthesized, characterized by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer (FTIR), Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and Single Crystal X-rayDiffraction, and the sensing abilities toward Fe3+ cation have been demonstrated and the probe was successfully utilized for fluorescence imaging of Fe3+ in living cells. The probe demonstrated quite fast, sensitive, and selective response to Fe3+ by causing an extreme enhancement in UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy techniques in the buffered aqueous media which makes MSB a dual-channel probe. While the color of MSB solution was initially light yellow, it turned pink in the presence of Fe3+, which provided highly selective naked-eye determination among several ions as alkaline, alkaline-earth, and transition metal ions. After that, the probe was easily applied to paper strips and real samples such as drinking waters and supplementary iron tablets for sensing Fe3+ in an aqueous solution. The detection limit (LOD) and the response time of the probe were determined as 4.85x10-9 M and 4 min, respectively, which are quite lower compared with other rhodamine based Fe3+ sensors in the literature. According to Job's plot, 1H NMR titration, MALDI-TOF MS, XPS, and DFT study techniques, the complexation ratio between MSB and Fe3+ was found as 1:1. Moreover, the spectral response was reversible with alternately addition of Fe3+ or Na2EDTA to the MSB solution. In addition, fluorescence imaging in NIH/3T3 mouse fibroblast cells and studies in real samples with a quite high recovery rate exhibited that the probe is qualified for detection of Fe3+ ion with multiple practical usages.

RESUMEN

Magnetopolymers are of interest in smart material applications; however, changing their magnetic properties post synthesis is complicated. In this study, we introduce easily programmable polymer magnetic composites comprising 2D lattices of droplets of solid-liquid phase change material, with each droplet containing a single magnetic dipole particle. These composites are ferromagnetic with a Curie temperature defined by the rotational freedom of the particles above the droplet melting point. We demonstrate magnetopolymers combining high remanence characteristics with Curie temperatures below the composite degradation temperature. We easily reprogram the material between four states: (1) a superparamagnetic state above the melting point which, in the absence of an external magnetic field, spontaneously collapses to; (2) an artificial spin ice state, which after cooling forms either; (3) a spin glass state with low bulk remanence, or; (4) a ferromagnetic state with high bulk remanence when cooled in the presence of an external magnetic field. We observe the spontaneous emergence of 2D magnetic vortices in the spin ice and elucidate the correlation of these vortex structures with the external bulk remanence. We also demonstrate the easy programming of magnetically latching structures.

RESUMEN

A straightforward method for the synthesis of a two-dimensional (2D) new copper(I) coordination polymer, namely Cu(bzpdc), containing the ligand benzophenone 4,4'-dicarboxylate, and its effective use as catalyst for the azide-alkyne click chemistry at room temperature is reported. Zig-zag formation caused by cuprophilic interactions resulted in an unprecedented crystal structure with a very high copper content (45.5% by weight). The catalyst was stable up until 300 °C and tolerant to various solvents, including water. Cu(bzpdc) showed excellent catalytic activity for click reactions of several organic azides and alkynes having different functional groups at room temperature and is comparable to its homogenous analogues. The recyclability of Cu(bzpdc) was also tested and proven to be effective.

RESUMEN

The synthesis of step-growth polymers by photoinduced methods is a challenging issue in synthetic chemistry. Here, we report a single component near UV responsive photopolymerization system for step-growth polymerization of N-methylpyrrole (MPyr) and N-methylindole (MIn) by using phenacyl bromide (PAB). The obtained high molecular weight conjugated polymers were characterized by spectral and chromatographic methods. Detailed laser flash photolysis and spectroscopic studies revealed that polymerization proceeds by successive photoinduced cleavage of PAB followed by electron transfer, proton release and coupling processes. After photolysis, chain growth continues also in daylight or dark by acidic oxidation. The structural features of the polymers were investigated. PAB single component photoinitiator enables an efficient, rapid, room temperature step-growth polymerization process of MPyr and MIn that can be applied to other conjugated monomers.

RESUMEN

Facelift techniques can be classified according to the depth and extent of the dissection applied. Imbrication and plication of the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) referred to as "SMAS lifts" or "classical facelifts" are the most commonly used techniques. Plication techniques involve in-folding of the SMAS and suture suspension without any SMAS incision whereas imbrication techniques involve a SMAS incision with a portion of the SMAS either removed or transposed with or without limited sub-SMAS dissection. Aging changes in the lower face and neck can be successfully treated with SMAS lift techniques. However, there is no lifting effect at midface level or improvement in the nasolabial folds since the retaining (zygomatic cutaneous and masseteric cutaneous) ligaments that prevent the transmission of traction to the malar portion of the facelift dissection are not released. Extended facelift techniques involve surgical release of these ligaments, and produce combined, balanced, and harmonious rejuvenation of the midface, cheek, and lower face without requiring a separate midface lift procedure. There are different techniques having similar extended midface dissections with some variations: The extended SMAS technique involves a long skin flap and a distinct SMAS flap dissected and pulled separately. The high SMAS technique has a similar dissection but involves a higher SMAS flap along the superior border of the zygomatic arch. The deep plane facelift involves undermining of skin-SMAS flap as a single unit following a more limited subcutaneous dissection. In the composite plane facelift, in addition to deep plane facelift dissection, the lower part of the orbicularis oculi muscle is also dissected and included in the flap. As they have a single unit, deep and composite flap facelifts allow excellent blood supply to the overlying skin. In this article, various facelift techniques are discussed in detail in line with the relevant surgical anatomy.

RESUMEN

A series of new spirothiazolidinone derivatives with a mandelic acid moiety were synthesized and subsequently tested in growth inhibition assays against Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain H37Rv. Compound 16 displayed the highest inhibition value of 98% at lower than 6.25 µg/mL concentration. A single crystal X-ray analysis was conducted on this compound to confirm the structure and determine its absolute configuration. Afterwards, reverse docking and molecular dynamics simulations of this specific stereoisomer were performed against a selection of 10 putative targets of M. tuberculosis to suggest possible mechanisms of action. Our results suggest HadAB, Pks13, DprE1, FadD32 and InhA as possible target proteins for the observed antimycobacterial activity of compound 16.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Rhinolithiasis is a rare condition which results from deposition of salt around a endogenous or exogenous nidus. In the literature, most of the reports are single case studies. In this study, we aimed to present the characteristics, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment methods of 31 rhinolithiasis cases and to focus on the current literature. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 31 rhinolithiasis cases which have been diagnosed and treated in a tertiary care center between January 2014 and December 2018. Patient characteristics, presenting symptoms, concomitant sinonasal disorders, and type of surgery were noted. Descriptive statistics were carried out. RESULTS: Mean age was 25.4±15.7. The cases were comprised 14 female patients (45.2%) and 17 male patients (54.8%). The most common presenting symptom was nasal obstruction (71%). Malodorous unilateral rhinorrhea was present in 17 patients (54.8%). Epistaxis snoring and sleep apnea were other rare symptoms. In 21 of the cases (67.7%), rhinolith was located between inferior turbinate and septum which was the most common location seen in our series. The number of patients who were under the age of 18 was 13, in 2 of them, rhinolith was found to be formed around a plastic bead, and in 2 of them, fruit seeds were the nidus. The most common concomitant sinonasal pathology was septal deviation which was detected in 20 of the patients (64.5%), adenoid vegetation and nasal polyposis were other disorders. In 20 of the patients (64.5%), simple removal of the rhinolith using a forceps with the help of a rigid nasal endoscope was performed. Eight of the 17 patients had severe deviation and septoplasty was performed at the same time, which was the most common concomitant surgical intervention (25.8%). In 3 patients (9.6%), functional endoscopic sinus surgery was performed at the same time. CONCLUSION: Our series is one of the largest series in the literature. The most common presenting symptom was nasal obstruction followed by malodorous rhinorrhea. Accompanying sinonasal disorders should be addressed to improve the outcome. Rigid or flexible endoscopic examination should be used to detect a rhinolith. Computed tomography scan can diagnose a hidden rhinolith in a patient with nasal obstruction.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to reveal clinical features of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) through comparing idiopathic BPPV and BPPV secondary to vestibular neuritis (VN). The clinical data of the 189 BPPV patients admitted to our tertiary care hospital including otolaryngological, audiological, vestibular, neurological, and radiological evaluations were reviewed. Patients diagnosed with idiopathic BPPV (n = 145) and BPPV secondary to VN (n = 44) were grouped as I and II, respectively. The clinical data of 2 groups were compared. The findings of the study showed that the patients with secondary BPPV due to VN are much younger, have symptoms of only posterior semicircular canal involvement, and require more treatments compared to patients with idiopathic BPPV. The clinical features of patients with BPPV secondary to VN and idiopathic BPPV differ on several aspects. More extensive studies are needed to investigate the underlying etiology in patients with BPPV encountered after VN.
