RESUMEN

Formation of a habit plane during martensitic transformation is related to an invariant plane strain transformation, which involves dislocation glide and twins. In the current work, the Phenomenological Theory of Martensitic Transformation (PTMT) is employed to study the crystallographic features while the phase field simulation is used to study the microstructure evolution for martensitic transformation of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Results show that mechanical constraints play a key role in the microstructure evolution. It is shown that a twinned structure with very small twinned variants is geometrically difficult to form due to the lattice parameters of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. It is concluded that the predicted habit plane from the PTMT is consistent with results of the micro-elastic theory. The formation of a triangular morphology is favored geometrically and elastically.

RESUMEN

This article details the ESAFORM Benchmark 2021. The deep drawing cup of a 1 mm thick, AA 6016-T4 sheet with a strong cube texture was simulated by 11 teams relying on phenomenological or crystal plasticity approaches, using commercial or self-developed Finite Element (FE) codes, with solid, continuum or classical shell elements and different contact models. The material characterization (tensile tests, biaxial tensile tests, monotonic and reverse shear tests, EBSD measurements) and the cup forming steps were performed with care (redundancy of measurements). The Benchmark organizers identified some constitutive laws but each team could perform its own identification. The methodology to reach material data is systematically described as well as the final data set. The ability of the constitutive law and of the FE model to predict Lankford and yield stress in different directions is verified. Then, the simulation results such as the earing (number and average height and amplitude), the punch force evolution and thickness in the cup wall are evaluated and analysed. The CPU time, the manpower for each step as well as the required tests versus the final prediction accuracy of more than 20 FE simulations are commented. The article aims to guide students and engineers in their choice of a constitutive law (yield locus, hardening law or plasticity approach) and data set used in the identification, without neglecting the other FE features, such as software, explicit or implicit strategy, element type and contact model.

Two of the microstructural parameters most influential in the properties of polycrystalline materials are grain size and crystallographic texture. Although both properties have been extensively studied and there are a wide range of analysis tools available, they are generally considered independently, without taking into account the possible correlations between them. However, there are reasons to assume that grain size and orientation are correlated microstructural state variables, as they are the result of single microstructural formation mechanisms occurring during material processing. In this work, the grain size distribution and orientation distribution functions are combined in a single multivariate grain size orientation distribution function (GSODF). In addition to the derivation of the function, several examples of practical applications to low carbon steels are presented, in which it is shown how the GSODF can be used in the analysis of 2D and 3D electron backscatter diffraction data, as well as in the generation of representative volume elements for full-field models and as input in simulations using mean-field methods.

Compacted graphite iron is the material of choice for engine cylinder heads of heavy-duty trucks. Compacted graphite iron provides the best possible compromise between optimum mechanical properties, compared to flake graphite iron, and optimum thermal conductivity, compared to spheroidal graphite iron. The vermicular-shaped graphite particles, however, act as stress concentrators, and, as a result of delamination from the metal matrix, they are responsible for crack initiation during the thermomechanical fatigue cycles occurring through engine startup and shutdown cycles. Scratch tests driven over the matrix and into the graphite particles were performed in order to characterize the strength of the metal⁻graphite interface. Samples extracted from a cylinder head in as-cast condition were compared to samples subjected to a heat-treatment at 700 °C for 60 h. The former samples were composed of a primarily pearlitic matrix and graphite particles (~11.5 vol %), whereas, after annealing, a certain pearlite fraction decomposed into Fe and C, producing a microstructure with graphite⁻ferrite interfaces, exhibiting a partially spiky morphology. The scratch test revealed that the ferrite⁻graphite interfaces with spiky nature exhibited a stronger resistance to delamination compared to the ferrite⁻graphite interfaces with smooth morphology. One reason for the high interface strength is the mechanical interlocking between graphite spikes and ferrite, increasing the contact area between the two phases.
