This study aimed to investigate the airborne exposure to aerosols according to the particle size distribution of three different spray types (nano-nozzled spray gun, low-temperature steam spray, and fogger) and compare the concentrations of inhaled aerosols between children and adults. Airborne aerosols released from three products were observed using size-segregated particle measurements, and particle concentrations deposited in the respiratory tracts of adults and children were estimated using multi-path particle dosimetry lung deposition models. All types of sprayers generated the most nanoparticles (~100 nm). Due to their higher respiratory rate than adults, a larger number of particles <1.0 µm deposited in the children's respiratory tracts was higher. The sequences of the total number of particles in the respiratory regions after spraying nano-nozzled spray gun and fogger were alveolar (AL)>tracheobronchial (TB)>head airway (HA) in adults and AL>HA>TB in children. Meanwhile, the trend of low-temperature steam spray was AL>TB>HA in adults and AL>TB>HA in children.

PURPOSE: Evidence suggests that long-term air pollution exposures may induce depression; however, the influence of physical activity on this effect is unclear. We investigated modification of the associations between air pollution exposures and depression by the intensity of physical activity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 1454 Korean adults. Depression was defined as a Geriatric Depression Scale score ≥8. Concentrations of particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5: diameter ≤10 µm and ≤2.5 µm, respectively) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) level at each participant's residential address were estimated. Based on metabolic equivalents, physical activity intensity was categorized as inactive, minimally active, or health-enhancing physical activity (HEPA). RESULTS: Each 1-part per billion (ppb) NO2 concentration increase was significantly associated with a 6% [95% confidence interval (CI), 4%-8%] increase in depression risk. In older adults (≥65 years), a 1-ppb NO2 increase was associated (95% CI) with a 4% (1%-7%), 9% (5%-13%), and 21% (9%-33%) increase in depression risk in the inactive, minimally active, and HEPA groups, respectively. Compared with the inactive group, the minimally active (p=0.039) and HEPA groups (p=0.004) had higher NO2 exposure-associated depression risk. Associations of PM10 and PM2.5 with depression did not significantly differ by the intensity of physical activity. CONCLUSION: We suggest that older adults who vigorously exercise outdoors may be susceptible to air pollution-related depression.

Around 8% of the global carbon dioxide emissions, are generated during cement manufacturing, which also involves significant use of raw materials, leading to adverse environmental effects. Consequently, extensive research is being conducted worldwide to explore the feasibility of utilizing different industrial waste by-products as alternatives to cement in concrete production. Fly ash (FA), Metakaolin (MK), Silica fume (SF), and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) are potential industrial materials that can serve as cement substitutes in pervious concrete. However, there exist conflicting findings in the literature regarding the impact of industrial supplementary cementitious materials (ISCMs) as partial cement replacements on the physical, mechanical, and durability properties of pervious concrete. The aim of this review is to investigate the feasibility and potential benefits of using ISCMs and compare them as partial cement replacements in the production of pervious concrete. The analysis primarily examines the effect of ISCMs as partial cement replacements on cementitious properties, including properties of ISMCs, mechanical properties, and durability of pervious concrete. The influence of ISCMs primarily stems from their pozzolanic reaction and filler characteristics. SF has the highest reactivity due to its high surface area and amorphous structure, resulting in a rapid pozzolanic reaction. GGBS and FA have moderate reactivity, while MK has relatively low reactivity due to its crystalline structure. Results from various studies indicate that the addition of FA, SF, and MK up to approximately 20% leads to a reduction in porosity and permeability while improving compressive strength and durability due to the filler effect of SF and MK. Incorporating GGBS increases permeability slightly while causing a slight decrease in compressive strength. The range of permeability and compressive strength for pervious concrete incorporating FA, SF, GGBS and MK were 0.17-1.46 cm/s and 4-35 MPa, 0.56-2.28 cm/s and 3.1-35 MPa, 0.19-0.64 cm/s and 8-42 MPa, 0.10-1.28 cm/s and 5.5-41 MPa, respectively, which are in the acceptable range for non-structural application of pervious concrete. In conclusion, it is possible to produce sustainable pervious concrete by substituting up to 20% of cement with FA, SF, GGBS, and MK, thereby reducing cement consumption, carbon footprint, energy usage, and air pollution associated with conventional cement production. However, further research is required to systematically assess the durability properties, long-term behavior, and, develop models for analyzing CO2 emissions and cost considerations of pervious concrete containing ISMCs.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have demonstrated that long-term exposure to particulate matter (PM) is associated with poor sleep quality. However, no studies have linked PM constituents, particularly heavy metals, to sleep quality. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the association between exposure to heavy metals in PM and sleep quality. METHODS: We obtained nationwide data from the Korean Community Health Survey conducted in 2018 among adults aged 19-80 years. Sleep quality was evaluated using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Poor sleep quality was defined as PSQI ≥5. One-year and three-month average concentrations of heavy metals (lead, manganese, cadmium, and aluminum) in PM with diameter ≤10 µm were obtained from nationwide air quality monitoring data and linked to the survey data based on individual district-level residential addresses. Logistic regression analyses were performed after adjusting for age, gender, education level, marital status, smoking status, alcohol consumption, history of hypertension, and history of diabetes mellitus. RESULTS: Of 32,050 participants, 17,082 (53.3%) reported poor sleep quality. Increases in log-transformed one-year average lead (odds ratio, 1.14; 95% confidence interval, 1.08-1.20), manganese (1.31; 1.25-1.37), cadmium (1.03; 1.00-1.05), and aluminum concentrations (1.17; 1.10-1.25) were associated with poor sleep quality. Increases in log-transformed three-month average manganese (odds ratio, 1.13; 95% confidence interval, 1.09-1.17) and aluminum concentrations (1.28; 1.21-1.35) were associated with poor sleep quality. CONCLUSION: We showed for the first time that exposure to airborne lead, manganese, cadmium, and aluminum were associated with poor sleep quality. This study may be limited by self-reported sleep quality and district-level exposure data.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution can cause various respiratory and neurological diseases and continuous exposure can lead to death. Previous studies have reported that particulate matter (PM) exposure increases the risk of depression, suicidal thoughts, and suicidal death; however, the results are inconsistent and limited. This study aimed to examine the relationship between short-term PM exposure and suicide deaths, as well as investigate the short-term effects of PM on suicide death within vulnerable groups based on factors such as sex, age group, suicide-related information (note, method, and cause), psychiatric disorders, and physical diseases. METHODS: Data on a total of 28,670 suicide deaths from 2013 to 2017, provided by the Korea Foundation for Suicide Prevention, were analyzed. The study design employed a time-series analysis with a two-stage approach. In the first step, a generalized additive model combined with a distributed lag nonlinear model was used to estimate the short-term effect of PM exposure on suicide risk specific to each city. In the second step, the estimated results from each city were pooled through a meta-analysis to derive the overall effect. We determined the effects of single lag, cumulative lag, and moving average PM concentrations from days 0-7 before suicide. RESULTS: We confirmed an association between exposure to PM10 (≤ 10 µm in diameter) and deaths due to suicide. In particular, among individuals with psychiatric disorders and those who employed non-violent suicide methods, increased exposure to PM10 was associated with a higher risk of death by suicide, with percentage changes of 5.92 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.95-7.92) and 11.47 (95% CI: 7.95-15.11), respectively. Furthermore, in the group with psychiatric disorders, there was an observed tendency of increasing suicide risk as PM10 levels increased up to 120 µg/m3, whereas in the group with non-violent suicide deaths, there was a pronounced trend of rapid increase in suicide risk with an increase in PM10 up to 100 µg/m3. CONCLUSIONS: These results show an association between short-term exposure to PM and suicide. Our study adds evidence for the benefits of reducing PM in preventing diseases and improving mental health.

We prioritized injury prevention and management programs, and research and development (R&D) projects using the Delphi method and analytic hierarchy process (AHP) for national plan. We summarized 21 programs and 31 R&D projects based on opinions collected in the opinion survey and brainstorming. Expert panel evaluated program and project relevance in the two Delphi rounds to make consensus. Total scores were calculated by adding criterion weights calculated through the AHP multiplied by the average of scores for each program and project. The top three programs were "Integrated Management System for Injury Data," "Comprehensive Injury Surveillance System," and "Transport System Improvement Program for Major Trauma." The top three R&D projects were researches on "Identification of Vulnerable Workers Injuries to Strengthen Protections," "Data Integration on Injury and Disability," and "Using Public Health Big Data to Identify Injury Status and Risk Factors." Experts highly rated the programs to improve injury surveillance system.

Pumilio (Pum) is an RNA-binding protein and translational repressor important to diverse biological processes. In the Drosophila ovary, Pum is expressed in female germline stem cells (GSCs), wherein it acts as an intrinsic stem cell maintenance factor via repressing target mRNAs that are as yet mostly unknown. Pum recognizes the Pum binding sequence (PBS) in the mRNA 3'UTR through its C-terminus Puf domain. Translational repression is mediated through its N-terminal domain, but the molecular mechanism remains largely unknown. We previously showed that Bag-of-marbles, a critical differentiation-promoting factor of female GSCs, physically interacts with the N-terminus of Pum. We further showed that this interaction is critical to Bam inhibition of Pum repressive action in cultured cells, but the physiological relevance was not addressed. Here we design an in vivo GFP translational reporter bearing the PBS in its 3'UTR and show that GFP expression is reduced in cells wherein Pum is known to be active. Furthermore, we demonstrate in pum mutant ovary that this GFP repression requires Pum, and also that the sensor faithfully monitors Pum activity. Finally, we show that forced expression of Bam inhibits Pum-mediated repression, validating that Bam inhibits Pum activity in vivo.

Agastache rugosa, also known as Korean mint, is a perennial plant from the Lamiaceae family that is traditionally used for various ailments and contains antioxidant and antibacterial phenolic compounds. Molecular breeding of A. rugosa can enhance secondary metabolite production and improve agricultural traits, but progress in this field has been delayed due to the lack of chromosome-scale genome information. Herein, we constructed a chromosome-level reference genome using Nanopore sequencing and Hi-C technology, resulting in a final genome assembly with a scaffold N50 of 52.15 Mbp and a total size of 410.67 Mbp. Nine pseudochromosomes accounted for 89.1% of the predicted genome. The BUSCO analysis indicated a high level of completeness in the assembly. Repeat annotation revealed 561,061 repeat elements, accounting for 61.65% of the genome, with Copia and Gypsy long terminal repeats being the most abundant. A total of 26,430 protein-coding genes were predicted, with an average length of 1,184 bp. The availability of this chromosome-scale genome will advance our understanding of A. rugosa's genetic makeup and its potential applications in various industries.

We examined long-term response (2008-2017) of the macrobenthos to the Hebei Spirit oil spill that occurred around the Taean coast, Korea, in December 2007. Oil concentrations were below the Korea/US environmental standards as of January 2008. Organic matter, chlorophyll-a, and zooplankton abundance dominated by Noctiluca scintillans were higher after the spill. Macrobenthic diversity recovered to pre-incident (2007) level in 2011. Biomass exceeded that level in 2011 and the increase prolonged for 5 years. Cross-correlation and regression analyses showed that chlorophyll-a at year t and zooplankton abundance at t-2 had a significant relationship with macrobenthic biomass at t (p < 0.05 for both), suggesting the transfer of increased organic matter (transformed from crude oil within the pelagic ecosystem) into the benthic ecosystem. Coastal wetlands around the incident area, vulnerable to oil pollution and slowly remobilizing accumulated oil, seemed to affect pelagic ecosystem processes and the unexpectedly increased and sustained biomass.

The dataset currently available comprises data on the removal rates of heavy metals (Ba, Se, Cr, Fe, Cd, As, and Co) through the incorporation of seashells and palm oil kernel shells into pervious concrete for stormwater treatment. Stormwater runoff was collected from commercial areas in Taman University, Skudai, Johor, Malaysia. The stormwater samples underwent filtration and were preserved in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) bottles at a temperature of 4 °C for use as incoming water. The outgoing water, referred to as effluent, was obtained from tests performed on pervious concrete samples after a curing period of 28 days. The pervious concrete mixes were created with a water-to-binder ratio (w/b ratio) of 32% and a sand ratio of 10%. Three different levels of palm oil kernel shell and seashell content were used as coarse aggregate replacements: 0%, 25%, and 50%. Two single-size group were considered for both palm oil kernel shell and seashell: (6.3-9.5 mm) and (4.75-6.3 mm). Heavy metal analyses were conducted on the influent and effluent using a PerkinElmer ELAN 6100 Series Inductively Coupled Plasma- Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS). The available datasets consist of both raw and analyzed data.

Comparison of the bleeding risk for long-term oral anticoagulation (OAC) in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (AF) with and without cancers has been inconsistent. This study aimed to clarify the differences in the bleeding risk in patients with AF with cancers and those without cancers during the long-term OAC.The CODE-AF prospective registry enrolled 5,902 consecutive patients treated for AF at 10 tertiary referral centers in Korea. Of the enrolled patients, 464 (7.8%) were diagnosed with cancers and were followed for all stroke and bleeding events (net composite events).The age, CHA2DS2-VASC, and HAS-BLED scores were similar between AF patients with and without cancers. Male population greatly comprised patients with AF with cancers. They were equally prescribed with direct OAC compared to those without cancers. The incidence rate for clinically relevant nonmajor (CRNM) bleeding events was higher in the patients with AF with cancers than in those without cancers (4.4 per 100 person-years versus 2.8 per 100 person-years, P = 0.023), and net composite events were also more frequent in patients with AF with cancers than in those without cancers (6.4 per 100 person-years versus 4.0 per 100 person-years, P = 0.004). Patients with AF with cancers showed a significantly higher rate of CRNM bleeding (hazard ratio [HR] 1.54, confidence interval [CI] 1.05-2.25, P = 0.002) than those without cancers.Based on the AF cohort, AF with cancers could face a significantly higher risk for CRNM bleeding events in the long-term OAC than those without cancers.

BACKGROUND: Higher concentrations of particulate matter (PM) have been shown to cause deterioration of the symptoms of respiratory and cardiovascular disease in several regional studies. Here, we aimed to investigate the healthcare utilization of lung cancer patients associated with short-term exposure to PM at the national level in Korea. METHODS: We extracted the data of 210 558 subjects over a period of 3 years (2015-2017), who were diagnosed with lung cancer before 2015 and benefited from the National Health Insurance Sharing Service. We performed the interpolation method using the geographic information system to calculate the estimated mean PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations by regions and classified three groups as high (upper 10%), intermediate (10%-90%), and low (bottom 10%) based on the mean PM mass concentrations of the month. RESULTS: The monthly average number of outpatient visits was significantly increased in high PM2.5 urban areas (46.296 vs. 50.646, p = 0.015). In high PM2.5 nationwide regions, the monthly average number of emergency admission was significantly increased (0.528 vs. 0.785, p = 0.001). The outpatient visits tended to change with PM2.5 concentration and correlated with PM10 /PM2.5 concentrations in urban and nationwide areas. In high PM2.5 urban regions, there was a significant increase in bronchodilator prescriptions (3.102 vs. 3.758, p = 0.008). Concerning high PM2.5 nationwide regions, there were significantly increased prescriptions of antibiotics, steroids, bronchodilators, antihistamines, and mucolytics. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that exposure to PM2.5 is significantly associated with hospital utilization and drug prescription in lung cancer patients.

Chlorophyll biosynthesis is a crucial biological process in plants, and chlorophyll content is one of the most important traits in rice breeding programs. In this study, we identified a lethal, chlorophyll-deficient, yellow seedling (YS) phenotype segregating in progeny of CR5055-21, an F2 plant derived from a backcross between Korean japonica variety 'Hwaseong' (Oryza sativa) and CR5029, which is mostly Hwaseong with a small amount of Oryza grandiglumis chromosome segments. The segregation of the mutant phenotype was consistent with a single gene recessive mutation. Light microscopy of YS leaf cross-sections revealed loosely arranged mesophyll cells and sparse parenchyma in contrast to wildtype. In addition, transmission electron microscopy showed that chloroplasts did not develop in the mesophyll cells of the YS mutant. Quantitative trait loci (QTL)-seq analysis did not detect any significant QTL, however, examination of the individual delta-SNP index identified a 2-bp deletion (AG) in the OsCHLI gene, a magnesium (Mg)-chelatase subunit. A dCAPs marker was designed and genotyping of a segregating population (n = 275) showed that the mutant phenotype co-segregated with the marker. The 2-bp deletion was predicted to result in a frameshift mutation generating a premature termination. The truncated protein likely affects formation and function of Mg-chelatase, which consists of three different subunits that together catalyze the first committed step of chlorophyll biosynthesis. Transcriptome analysis showed that photosynthesis and carbohydrate metabolism pathways were significantly altered although expression of OsCHLI was not. Chlorophyll- and carotenoid-related genes were also differentially expressed in the YS mutant. Our findings demonstrated that OsCHLI plays an important role in leaf pigment biosynthesis and leaf structure development in rice.

BACKGROUND: Genome editing tools derived from clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) systems have been developed for generating targeted mutations in plants. Although these tools hold promise for rapid crop improvement, target-specific guide RNAs exhibit variable activity. To improve genome editing, a rapid and precise method for evaluating their efficiency is necessary. RESULTS: Here we report an efficient system for screening single guide RNAs (sgRNAs) for genome editing in sorghum using a transient protoplast transfection assay. Protoplasts were isolated from leaves from sorghum plants cultivated under three different conditions. Cultivation for three days of continuous darkness following seven days with a 16-h light and 8-h dark photoperiod resulted in the highest yield of viable protoplasts and the highest protoplast transfection efficiency. We tested both plasmid-mediated and ribonucleoprotein-based delivery to protoplasts, via polyethylene glycol-mediated transfection, of CRISPR components targeting the sorghum genome. The frequencies of small insertions and deletions induced by a set of sgRNAs targeting four endogenous sorghum genes were analyzed via targeted deep sequencing. Our screening system induced indels in sorghum protoplasts at frequencies of up to 77.8% (plasmid) and 18.5% (RNP). The entire screening system was completed within 16 days. CONCLUSIONS: The screening system optimized in this study for predicting sgRNA activity for genome editing in sorghum is efficient and straightforward. This system will reduce the time and effort needed for sorghum genome editing.

This study aimed to identify the relationship between blood lead and Cadmium (Cd) concentrations and metabolic syndromes (MetS), including its components (central obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, low high-density lioioritein, hypertension, and hyperglycemia) among Korean firefighters. A total of 965 firefighters of the Enhancement of Safety and Health cohort were analyzed in this study. MetS was defined according to the 2005 revised National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel III criteria and the Korean Society for the Study of Obesity criteria for waist circumference. The collected data were analyzed using a logistic regression model. Of the 965 participants, 190 (19.7%) had MetS. After adjusting for age, body mass index, smoking, drinking, exercise, shift duty, and main duty position, the Cd level was significantly associated with an increased risk of MetS in the Korean firefighter population (odds ratio [OR] = 1.62, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.07, 2.46). This association was significant among non-smokers and ex-smokers (OR = 1.58, 95% CI 1.03, 2.43), non-drinkers and ex-drinkers (OR = 1.77, 95% CI 1.06, 2.94), firefighters aged 40 year or older (OR = 1.77, 95% CI 1.10, 2.86), and office administrators (OR = 3.85, 95% CI 1.42, 10.39). Sorghum bicolor L. is a vital cereal crop for global food security. Its adaptability to diverse climates make it economically, socially, and environmentally valuable. However, soil salinization caused by climate extremes poses a threat to sorghum. This study aimed to identify candidate salt-tolerant genes and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) by performing a comparative transcriptome analysis on a mutant sorghum line and its wild type. The mutant line was generated through gamma ray exposure and selection for salt tolerance. Phenotypic measurements were taken, followed by mRNA sequencing and variant calling. In this study, potential genes and non-synonymous SNPs associated with salt tolerance were inferred, including LOC8071970, LOC8067721, LOC110430887, LOC8070256, and LOC8056880. These genes demonstrated notable differences in nsSNPs in comparison to the wild type, suggesting their potential roles in salt tolerance. Additionally, LOC8060874 (cyanohydrin beta-glucosyltransferase) was suggested as a key gene involved in salt tolerance due to its possible role in dhurrin biosynthesis under salt stress. In upcoming research, additional reverse genetics studies will be necessary in order to verify the function of those candidate genes in relation to salt stress. In conclusion, this study underscores the significance of investigating salt tolerance mechanisms and the potential key genes associated with salt tolerance in sorghum. Our findings may provide insights for future breeding strategies aimed at enhancing salinity tolerance and crop productivity.

To improve resolution to small genomic regions and sensitivity to small-effect loci in the identification of genetic factors conferring the enlarged inflorescence and other traits of cauliflower while also expediting further genetic dissection, 104 near-isogenic introgression lines (NIILs) covering 78.56% of the cauliflower genome, were selected from an advanced backcross population using cauliflower [Brassica oleracea var. botrytis L., mutant for Orange gene (ORG)] as the donor parent and a rapid cycling line (TO1434) as recurrent parent. Subsets of the advanced backcross population and NIILs were planted in the field for 8 seasons, finding 141 marker-trait associations for 15 leaf-, stem-, and flower-traits. Exemplifying the usefulness of these lines, we delineated the previously known flower color gene to a 4.5 MB interval on C3; a gene for small plant size to a 3.4 MB region on C8; and a gene for large plant size and flowering time to a 6.1 MB region on C9. This approach unmasked closely linked QTL alleles with opposing effects (on chr. 8) and revealed both alleles with expected phenotypic effects and effects opposite the parental phenotypes. Selected B. oleracea NIILs with short generation time add new value to widely used research and teaching materials.

Although several epidemiological studies have suggested that exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) may induce brain atrophy, no longitudinal study has investigated the effect of PAH exposure on brain structural changes. This study examined the longitudinal associations between urinary PAH metabolites and brain cortical thickness. We obtained urinary concentrations of PAH metabolites and brain magnetic resonance images from 327 adults (≥50 years of age) without dementia at baseline and 3-year follow-up. We obtained whole-brain and regional cortical thicknesses, as well as an Alzheimer's disease (AD)-specific marker for cortical atrophy (a higher score indicated a greater similarity to patients with AD) at baseline and follow-up. We built a linear mixed-effect model including each of urinary PAH metabolites as the time-varying exposure variable of interest. We found that increases in urinary concentrations of 1-hydroxypyrene (ß = -0.004; 95% CI, -0.008 to -0.001) and 2-hydroxyfluorene (ß = -0.011; 95% CI, -0.015 to -0.006) were significantly associated with a reduced whole-brain cortical thickness. A urinary concentration of 2-hydroxyfluorene was significantly associated with an increased AD-specific cortical atrophy score (ß = 2.031; 95% CI, 0.512 to 3.550). The specific brain regions showing the association of urinary concentrations of 1-hydroxypyrene, 2-naphthol, 1-hydroxyphenanthrene, or 2-hydroxyfluorene with cortical thinning were the frontal, parietal, temporal, and cingulate lobes. These findings suggested that exposure to PAHs may reduce brain cortical thickness and increase the similarity to AD-specific cortical atrophy patterns in adults.

Although firefighters are at an increased risk of occupational exposure to chemicals, such as flame retardants, research on the exposure of Korean firefighters to organophosphate esters (OPEs)-a group of emerging flame retardants-remains limited. Therefore, in the present study, OPE metabolite concentrations in the urine samples of 149 former and current Korean firefighters were measured. Based on the data obtained, the estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of OPEs were calculated. Subsequently, the association between the urinary concentrations of OPE metabolites and the potential determinants of OPE exposure and health outcomes (e.g., obesity and serum lipids) was investigated. We found that bis(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (BCIPP) and bis(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (BCEP) were the most prevalent urinary OPE metabolites, with median concentrations of 2.33 and 1.80 ng/mL, respectively; these concentrations were higher than those reported previously in other countries, such as the USA and China. Moreover, their parent compounds-tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCIPP) and tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP)-exhibited EDIs of 126 and 94.8 ng/kg bw/day, respectively. Unlike the high detection rate of bis(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (BDCIPP) in other populations, its detection rate in this study was low (6.7%), suggesting regional differences in the exposure pattern of OPEs among countries. Furthermore, occupational characteristics, such as recent participation in firefighting activity, were identified as determinants of the urinary concentrations of OPE metabolites. Total OPE metabolites were inversely associated with body mass index and positively associated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Overall, our findings demonstrate that Korean firefighters are highly exposed to several occupation-related OPEs. Further prospective studies will help elucidate the potential health implications of occupational exposure to OPEs among firefighters.
