RESUMEN

Red sea bream iridovirus (RSIV) is a highly contagious viral infection that affects various fish species and poses a significant threat to the global aquaculture industry. Thus, accurate and timely diagnosis is paramount for sustainable management of fish health. This study rigorously evaluated the diagnostic efficacy of various polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays, focusing on those recommended by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) and the assays newly proposed by WOAH's Aquatic Animals Health Standards Commission. Specifically, this study assessed conventional PCR, nested PCR, modified 1-F/1-R, and real-time PCR assays using a 95% limit of detection (LoD95%), as well as diagnostic sensitivity (DSe) and specificity (DSp) tests across different RSIV severity grades (G0-G4). In previous studies, the LoD95% for the 1-F/1-R and 4-F/4-R conventional assays were 225.81 and 328.7 copies/reaction, respectively. The modified 1-F/1-R exhibited a lower LoD95% of 51.32 copies/reaction. Notably, the nested PCR had an LoD95% of 11.23 copies/reaction, and the real-time PCR assay had an LoD95% of 12.02 copies/reaction. The DSe varied across RSIV severity grades, especially in the lower G0-G2 grades. The nested PCR and modified 1-F/1-R assays displayed the highest DSe, making them particularly useful for early-stage screening and detection of asymptomatic carriers. In addition, the PCR assays did not cross-react with any other aquatic pathogens except RSIV. Our findings significantly advanced the diagnostic capabilities of RSIVD by suggesting that nested PCR and modified 1-F/1-R assays are particularly promising for early detection. We propose their inclusion in future WOAH guidelines for a more comprehensive diagnostic framework.

The transmission and pathogenesis of highly contagious fatal respiratory viruses are increasing, and the need for an on-site diagnostic platform has arisen as an issue worldwide. Furthermore, as the spread of respiratory viruses continues, different variants have become the dominant circulating strains. To prevent virus transmission, the development of highly sensitive and accurate on-site diagnostic assays is urgently needed. Herein, a facile diagnostic device is presented for multi-detection based on the results of detailed receptor-ligand dynamics simulations for the screening of various viral strains. The novel bioreceptor-treated electronics (receptonics) device consists of a multichannel graphene transistor and cell-entry receptors conjugated to N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC). An ultrasensitive multi-detection performance is achieved without the need for sample pretreatment, which will enable rapid diagnosis and prevent the spread of pathogens. This platform can be applied for the diagnosis of variants of concern in clinical respiratory virus samples and primate models. This multi-screening platform can be used to enhance surveillance and discriminate emerging virus variants before they become a severe threat to public health.

INTRODUCTION: In growing children with transverse malocclusion problems, various types of rapid maxillary expanders (RMEs) have been effectively used in skeletal and dental expansions. We evaluated 3-dimensional dentopalatal changes in growing children who underwent maxillary expansion using RMEs and bonded RMEs. METHODS: We investigated dentopalatal changes in 20 patients treated with bonded RMEs, 19 with RMEs, and 38 control patients. Dental plaster models before and after expansion were scanned 3-dimensionally and superimposed to evaluate transverse expansion, expansion ratio, angular expansion, and palatal expansion height ratio. RESULTS: Using bonded RMEs, similar anterior and posterior dental expansions were achieved with an efficiency of 69%-76% (expansion ratio), and palatal soft-tissue expansion occurred more apically in the posterior area (palatal expansion height ratio, 1.00) than in the anterior area (palatal expansion height ratio, 0.64). Using RMEs, a larger posterior dental expansion was achieved, with an efficiency of 106%-117% (expansion ratio), than anterior dental expansion (55%-60%), and palatal soft-tissue expansion occurred more apically in the posterior area (palatal expansion height ratio, 0.99) than anterior area (palatal expansion height ratio, 0.23). CONCLUSIONS: Dental expansions in the anterior and posterior areas were similar using bonded RMEs, whereas the posterior dental expansions were larger than those of the anterior area using RMEs. The entire palatal soft-tissue slope expanded in the posterior area, whereas the occlusal part expanded in the anterior area using RMEs and bonded RMEs.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to investigate changes in bite force (BF) and occlusal contact area after anterior open-bite (AOB) treatment and compare the changes in surgical vs nonsurgical treatment. METHODS: This retrospective study included patients with AOB compared with normal occlusion. AOB was corrected by either intrusion of the maxillary molars (intrusion group, n = 19) or orthognathic surgery (surgery group, n = 37). The control group (n = 35) had a normal overbite relationship. Records of lateral cephalograms, BF, and occlusal contact area taken before (T0), immediately after (T1), and 2 years after (T2) orthodontic treatment were compared within and among the 3 groups. RESULTS: The open-bite group, including intrusion and surgery groups, had a lower BF and less occlusal contact area than the control group at T0 and T1 (P <0.001). However, there were no significant differences among the 3 groups at T2 (P >0.05). The intrusion and surgery groups showed no significant differences throughout the observation period extending from T0 to T2 (P >0.05). Although BF and occlusal contact area decreased at T1 compared with T0, they increased during retention and showed higher values at T2 than at T0. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment of AOB improved BF and occlusal contact area 2 years posttreatment. Orthognathic surgery and molar intrusion using orthodontic miniscrews can improve occlusal function similarly. Orthodontists can select either method depending on malocclusion severity and patient demand.

RESUMEN

We developed a novel strategy for discriminative detection of SARS-CoV-2 variants based on the plasmonic photothermal effect of gold nanofilms and digital polymerase chain reaction (dPCR) technology. This method consists of the gold nanofilm-based dPCR chip fabrication for ultrafast heating and cooling cycles by the plasmonic photothermal effect, the LED quencher immobilization through the interfacing compound on the surface of the gold nanofilm to prevent photoquenching of PCR signaling dye, and the discriminative detection of the variant viruses from the COVID-19 clinical samples by photothermal cycles with fabricated dPCR chips and a portable plasmonic PCR device. Compared to conventional sequencing or RT-qPCR-based variant detection methods, this technology can be effectively applied to point-of-care testing by enabling ultrafast quantitative analysis with a small device. With this method, we successfully detected the delta variant and the omicron variant with a high sensitivity of 10 copies from COVID-19 patients' clinical samples within 25 min, including reverse transcription. This method can be applied universally to rapid and accurate point-of-care testing for various pandemic viruses as well as the coronavirus.

INTRODUCTION: In this study, we compared the dentitional changes after Invisalign and conventional orthodontic treatment with 4 first premolar extractions. METHODS: This retrospective study included 57 patients whose orthodontic treatment involved the extraction of 4 first premolars because of bialveolar protrusion. A total of 27 patients were treated with Invisalign (mean age, 25.5 ± 5.2 years) and 30 patients with the fixed appliance (mean age, 24.4 ± 5.8 years). The angular and linear changes of the maxillary and mandibular central incisors, second premolars, first molars, and second molars were measured from the recordings on the basis of the lateral cephalograms taken before and after treatment. The angular changes of the canines and second premolars were measured using panoramic radiographs. RESULTS: The overbite and interincisal angle increased significantly in the Invisalign group compared with in the conventional fixed appliance group (P <0.05). The maxillary central incisors showed increased lingual tipping in the Invisalign group (P <0.05), whereas there was no statistically significant difference in the angular change of the mandibular incisors between groups (P >0.05). The maxillary first and second molars showed mesial tipping in the Invisalign group (P <0.05). The maxillary second premolars, first and second molars, and the mandibular second molars showed mesial movement in the Invisalign group (P <0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The Invisalign group showed more statistically significant lingual tipping of the maxillary central incisors, distal tipping of the maxillary canines, and mesial tipping of the maxillary first and second molars after maximum retraction of the anterior teeth compared with the fixed appliance group.

γ-Hydroxybutyrate (GHB), a date-rape drug, causes certain symptoms, such as amnesia, confusion, ataxia, and unconsciousness, when dissolved in beverages and consumed by a victim. Commonly, assailants use GHB in secret for the crime of drug-facilitated sexual assault because it is tasteless, odorless, and colorless when dissolved in beverages. Generally, GHB detection methods are difficult to use promptly and secretly in situ and in real life because of the necessary detection equipment and low selectivity. To overcome this problem, we have developed a fast, simple, and easy-to-use second skin platform as a confidential self-protection platform that can detect GHB in situ or in real life without equipment. The second skin platform for naked-eye detection of GHB is fabricated with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), polyurethane (PU), and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) included in the chemical receptor 2-(3-bromo-4-hydroxystyryl)-3-ethylbenzothiazol-3-ium iodide (BHEI). PAN conjugated with BHEI nanofibers (PB NFs) has various characteristics, such as ease of use, high sensitivity, and fast color change. PB NFs rapidly detected GHB at 0.01 mg/mL. Furthermore, the second-skin platform attached to the fingertip and wrist detected both 1 and 0.1 mg/mL GHB in solution within 50 s. The color changes caused by the interaction of GHB and the second skin platform cannot be stopped due to strong chemical reactions. In addition, a second skin platform can be secretly utilized in real life because it can recognize fingerprints and object temperatures. Therefore, the second skin platform can be used to aid daily life and prevent drug-facilitated sexual assault crime when attached to the skin because it can be exposed anytime and anywhere.

Surgical techniques are gaining attention for treating physical diseases in aquaculture and aquarium fish. Sturgeon is a suitable species for surgical experiments due to its industrial significance. Maintaining homeostasis is crucial during surgical procedures, and the liver plays a major role in immune regulation. High temperature is suggested to improve physiological activity and wound healing. This study investigated differences in hepatectomy sturgeons' tolerance and histopathological responses of internal organs. Moreover, this study investigated the effects of high temperatures on wound healing and hematopoietic recovery in fish undergoing surgical procedures. The liver condition was found to play a pivotal role in the analysis, and cortisol levels were affected by anesthesia. The results showed that high temperature facilitated hematopoietic recovery and wound healing, but excessive induction of physiological activity caused damage. Managing high temperatures and liver conditions induced a remarkable improvement in wound healing. However, anesthesia itself can be a significant stressor for fish, and wound healing requires a greater amount of energy. Further research is needed to understand the stress factors caused by surgical procedures and anesthesia and to promote animal welfare in fishery products.

This in vitro study evaluated comprehensively the performances of zirconia brackets with varying yttria proportions in manufacturing advanced orthodontic brackets. Three experimental groups of zirconia brackets were fabricated using yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) materials with different yttria proportions-3 mol% yttria (3Y-YSZ), 4 mol% yttria (4Y-YSZ), and 5 mol% yttria (5Y-YSZ) (Tosoh Ceramic, Japan). A polycrystalline alumina ceramic bracket (3M™ Clarity™ Advanced, MBT 0.022-in. slot) was employed as the control group. Morphological properties, including slot surface structure and dimensions, were examined using scanning electron microscopy and surface profiler analysis. Manufacturing accuracy was assessed with root mean square calculations of trueness and precision. Mechanical properties were tested, encompassing static and kinetic frictional resistance (FR) and fracture strength. Optical stability was evaluated through 20,000 cycles of thermocycling and a 7-day immersion in various coloring agents. Within the limitations of this study, zirconia brackets containing 3 to 5 mol% YSZ presented enhanced reliability in terms of dimensional accuracy and demonstrated favorable optical stability. Notably, owing to its advantageous mechanical properties, the 3Y-YSZ variant showed remarkable potential as an advanced material for fabricating orthodontic brackets.

Aquaculture, a crucial sector of the global food industry, faces a myriad of issues due to parasitic invasions. One such parasite, Microcotyle sebastis, which afflicts Korean rockfish in South Korea, has a significant economic impact. The impending danger of resistance to traditional anthelmintics necessitates the exploration of new antiparasitic candidates. Although the efficacy of salinomycin against aquatic parasites such as ciliates and sporozoans is known, its influence on monogeneans has yet to be studied. Therefore, this study investigated the efficacy and safety of salinomycin for the treatment of M. sebastis infections, presenting the first exploration of salinomycin's therapeutic potential against monogeneans. In vitro examinations revealed a minimum effective concentration of salinomycin of 5 mg/kg, which led to necrosis of the haptor upon dislodging from the gill filaments. The one-time oral administration of the drug at concentrations of 5 mg/kg and 10 mg/kg showed a significant dose-dependent reduction in parasite counts, with no apparent behavioral side effects in Korean rockfish. Biochemical analyses monitored the liver, heart, and kidney enzymes, specifically aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and creatine kinase-myocardial band (CK-MB). At both 20 °C and 13 °C, no significant differences were observed in the levels of AST and ALT. However, at 20 °C, alterations in BUN levels were evident on Day 14, a deviation not observed at 13 °C. The CK-MB analysis revealed elevated enzyme levels at both temperatures when compared to the control group, reflecting the similar changes observed in terrestrial animals administered salinomycin. The biochemical data suggest that the oral administration of salinomycin is potentially more favorable at 13 °C than at 20 °C. Although our findings warrant further comprehensive studies, including on the long-term and potential effects on nontarget species and water quality, they also suggest that salinomycin could be considered as an alternative or adjunctive treatment if resistance to the currently used praziquantel against M. sebastis is confirmed.

This study detected two potential pathogens, Vibro parahaemolyticus, which causes acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND), and white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), in fishing bait in South Korea. However, their infectious nature was not confirmed, possibly due to the degradation caused by freezing/thawing or prolonged storage under frozen conditions. While infectivity was not confirmed in this study, there is still a significant risk of exposure to these aquatic products. Furthermore, fishing bait and feed should be handled with caution as they are directly exposed to water, increasing the risk of disease transmission. In Australia, cases of WSSV infection caused by imported shrimp intended for human consumption have occurred, highlighting the need for preventive measures. While freezing/thawing is a method for inactivating pathogens, there are still regulatory and realistic issues to be addressed.

Antibody sensor to detect viruses has been widely used but has problems such as the difficulty of right direction control of the receptor site on solid substrate, and long time and high cost for design and production of antibodies to new emerging viruses. The virus detection sensor with a recombinant protein embedded liposome (R/Li) was newly developed to solve the above problems, in which R/Li was assembled on AuNPs (Au@R/Li) to increase the sensitivity using localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) method. Recombinant angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE2) was used as host receptors of SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2, and the direction of enzyme active site for virus attachment could be controlled by the integration with liposome. The recombinant protein embedded liposomes were assembled on AuNPs, and LSPR method was used for detection. With the sensor platform S1 protein of both viruses was detected with detection limit of 10 pg/ml and SARS-CoV-2 in clinical samples was detected with 10 ~ 35 Ct values. In the selectivity test, MERS-CoV did not show a signal due to no binding with Au@R/Li. The proposed sensor platform can be used as promising detection method with high sensitivity and selectivity for the early and simple diagnosis of new emerging viruses.

Parasitic infections pose significant challenges in aquaculture, and the increasing resistance to conventional anthelmintics necessitates the exploration of alternative treatments. Levamisole hydrochloride (HCl) has demonstrated efficacy against monogenean infections in various fish species; however, research focused on Microcotyle sebastis infections in Korean rockfish (Sebastes schlegelii) remains limited. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of levamisole HCl against M. sebastis infections in Korean rockfish with the goal of optimizing anthelmintic usage in aquaculture. In this study, we first assessed the susceptibility of M. sebastis to levamisole HCl in vitro. Subsequently, in vivo evaluations were conducted to assess the drug's efficacy, safety, and to identify optimal administration methods. In vitro experiments revealed concentration-dependent sensitivity of M. sebastis to levamisole HCl, with a minimum effective concentration (MEC) of 100 mg/L. In vivo experiments employed oral administration, intraperitoneal injection, and immersion treatments based on the MEC. Oral administration proved to be a safe method, yielding efficacy rates of 27.3% and 41.6% for 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg doses, respectively, in contrast to the immersion and injection methods, which induced symptoms of abnormal swimming, vomiting, and death. Biochemical analyses conducted to assess the safety of levamisole HCl revealed a transient, statistically significant elevation in the levels of glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) and glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) on day three post-administration at 20 °C. Following this, no substantial differences were observed. However, at 13 °C, the enzyme levels remained relatively consistent, emphasizing the role of water temperature conditions in influencing the action of levamisole HCl. Our research findings substantiate the efficacy of levamisole HCl against M. sebastis in Korean rockfish, underscoring its potential for safe oral administration. These results provide valuable insights for developing parasite control strategies involving levamisole HCl in Korean rockfish populations while minimizing adverse impacts on fish health and the environment. However, this study bears limitations due to its controlled setting and narrow focus. Future research should expand on these findings by testing levamisole HCl in diverse environments, exploring different administration protocols, and examining wider temperature ranges.

In this study, the starry flounder L1 cell adhesion molecule (L1CAM) sequence was obtained using next-generation sequencing, and the integrity of the sequence was verified by cloning and sequencing. First, the amino acid sequence was predicted using the cDNA sequence, and the gene was then identified through multiple sequence alignment analysis with related sequences and phylogenetic analysis. Thus, homogeneity was confirmed. The expression level of PsL1CAM (Platichthys stellatus L1CAM) mRNA in healthy starry flounder was detected in all tissues used in the experiment, and tissue- and gene-specific expression levels were confirmed. In addition, as a result of mRNA expression analysis after artificial infection with viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV) and Streptococcus parauberis PH0710, significant expression changes and characteristics were confirmed following infection with VHSV and S. parauberis PH0710. After artificial infection with VHSV, the expression level of PsL1CAM mRNA was significantly upregulated in almost all major tissues of the starry flounder, whereas it was significantly downregulated in mucosal-associated lymphoid tissues, such as the gills and intestine. Infection with S. parauberis PH0710 significantly upregulated the expression of PsL1CAM mRNA in almost all major tissues of the starry flounder, whereas it was significantly downregulated in the heart after infection. Our results indicate that PsL1CAM may be involved in the host immune response to starry flounders.

We aimed to evaluate root parallelism and the dehiscence or fenestrations of virtual teeth setup using roots isolated from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. Sixteen patients undergoing non-extraction orthodontic treatment with molar distalization were selected. Composite teeth were created by merging CBCT-isolated roots with intraoral scan-derived crowns. Three setups were performed sequentially: crown setup considering only the crowns, root setup-1 considering root alignment, and root setup-2 considering the roots and surrounding alveolar bone. We evaluated the parallelism and exposure of the roots and compared the American Board of Orthodontics Objective Grading System (ABO-OGS) scores using three-dimensionally printed models among the setups. The mean angulation differences between adjacent teeth in root setups-1 and -2 were significantly smaller than in the crown setup, except for some posterior teeth (p < 0.05). The amount of root exposure was significantly smaller in root setup-2 compared to crown setup and root setup-1 except when the mean exposure was less than 0.6 mm (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in ABO-OGS scores among the setups. Thus, virtual setup considering the roots and alveolar bone can improve root parallelism and reduce the risk of root exposure without compromising occlusion quality.

Infestations of parasites, particularly those caused by copepods and monogeneans, are a major hindrance to aquaculture and have a big negative economic impact. Sebastes schlegelii, a farmed Korean rockfish, is particularly prone to copepods and monogeneans. This study comprehended how parasitic copepods and rockfish from a farm in Tongyeong-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea, are related to the monogenean trematode Microcotyle sebastis. Our research revealed that monogeneans predominated, with a rate of 98.4% and an average infection intensity of 7 per infected fish. With an average infection intensity of 4 per sick fish, the infection rate for parasitic copepods was equally considerable, coming in at 91.7%. The high co-infection rate of both parasite families, at 90.8%, is noteworthy. Furthermore, Lepeophtheirus elegans and Peniculus truncatus, 2 parasitic copepod species, were discovered to have M. sebastis eggs attached to their bodies. This demonstrates a connection between parasitic copepod infestations in farmed Korean rockfish and the monogenean trematode M. sebastis. This paper describes a basic study on the measurement of return loss and change in Smith chart using a microstrip patch antenna (MPA) with concentration transition to perform non-invasive blood glucose measurements. To evaluate blood glucose level changes in the human body, the concentration of measurements was changed 10 times to an equivalent of 100 mg/dL in a range of 0-1000 mg/dL to reflect a concentration of 400 mg/dL, which is the fatal level of diabetes. Five types of MPAs were fabricated that formed resonant frequencies in the 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 GHz bands, and were used in the experiment. Each MPA constituted a sharp narrow band characteristic and induced a large change in return loss. By measuring the return loss and Smith chart to evaluate the concentration change at resonant frequencies, the return loss was observed to change by an average of 0.058 dB for every 100 mg/dL change, and the impedance magnitudes and phase angles analyzed through the Smith chart were observed to have a certain tendency, which confirmed that they were changed. This study shows that for performing non-invasive measurements of blood sugar level, measuring the change in return loss can provide a more stable and reliable measurement compared to the two methods that are simultaneously used to view the samples.

OBJECTIVES: Masticatory function, including masticatory muscle activity and occlusal function, can be affected by craniofacial morphology. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between craniofacial morphology and masticatory function in participants who had completed orthodontic treatment at least two years before and had stable occlusion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fourty-two healthy participants were prospectively enrolled and divided into three vertical cephalometric groups according to the mandibular plane angle. Masticatory muscle activity (MMA) in the masseter and anterior temporalis muscles was assessed using surface electromyography. The occlusal contact area (OCA) and occlusal force (OF), defined as occlusal function in this study, were evaluated using occlusal pressure mapping system. Masticatory muscle efficiency (MME) was calculated by dividing MMA by OF. The craniofacial morphology was analyzed using a lateral cephalogram. The masticatory function was compared using one-way analysis of variance. Pearson correlations were used to assess relationships between craniofacial morphology and masticatory function. RESULTS: The hypodivergent group had the lowest MMAand the highest MME in the masseter (167.32 ± 74.92 µV and 0.14 ± 0.06 µV/N, respectively) and anterior temporalis muscles (0.18 ± 0.08 µV/N, p < 0.05). MMA in the masseter showed a positive relationship with mandibular plane angle (r = 0.358), whereas OCA (r = -0.422) and OF (r = -0.383) demonstrated a negative relationship (p < 0.05). The anterior temporalis muscle activity negatively correlated with ramus height (r = -0.364, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Vertical craniofacial morphology was related to masticatory function. Hypodivergent individuals may have low MMA and high occlusal function, resulting in good masticatory muscle efficiency. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Hypodivergent individuals require careful consideration in orthodontic diagnosis and prosthetic treatment planning.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated the occlusal status of the maxillary third molars that erupted spontaneously after extraction of the maxillary second molars and investigated the factors that influenced the occlusal status of the maxillary third molars. METHODS: We assessed 136 maxillary third molars in 87 patients. Alignment, marginal ridge discrepancy, occlusal contact, interproximal contact, and buccal overjet were used to score the occlusal status. Occlusal status was classified as good (G group), acceptable (A group), and poor (P group) for the maxillary third molar at its full eruption (T1). The Nolla's stage, long axis angle, the vertical and horizontal position of the maxillary third molar, and the maxillary tuberosity space were assessed at the time of maxillary second molar extraction (T0) and T1 to identify factors influencing the eruption of the maxillary third molar. RESULTS: G, A, and P groups comprised 47.8%, 17.6,% and 34.6% of the sample, respectively. Age was the lowest in the G group at both T0 and T1. The maxillary tuberosity space at T1 and the amount of the change of maxillary tuberosity space were the largest in the G group. There was a significant difference in the distribution of the Nolla's stage at T0. The proportions of the G group were 60.0% in stage 4, 46.8% in stages 5 and 6, 70.4% in stage 7, and 15.0% in stages 8-10. According to multiple logistic regression analysis, stages 8-10 for the maxillary third molar at T0 and the amount of the change of maxillary tuberosity were negatively associated with the G group. CONCLUSIONS: Good-to-acceptable occlusion was seen in 65.4% of the maxillary third molars after maxillary second molar extraction. Insufficient increase in the maxillary tuberosity space and Nolla stage 8 or higher at T0 negatively influenced the maxillary third molar eruption.

Graphene and related 2D material (GRM) thin films consist of 3D assembly of billions of 2D nanosheets randomly distributed and interacting via van der Waals forces. Their complexity and the multiscale nature yield a wide variety of electrical characteristics ranging from doped semiconductor to glassy metals depending on the crystalline quality of the nanosheets, their specific structural organization ant the operating temperature. Here, the charge transport (CT) mechanisms are studied that are occurring in GRM thin films near the metal-insulator transition (MIT) highlighting the role of defect density and local arrangement of the nanosheets. Two prototypical nanosheet types are compared, i.e., 2D reduced graphene oxide and few-layer-thick electrochemically exfoliated graphene flakes, forming thin films with comparable composition, morphology and room temperature conductivity, but different defect density and crystallinity. By investigating their structure, morphology, and the dependence of their electrical conductivity on temperature, noise and magnetic-field, a general model is developed describing the multiscale nature of CT in GRM thin films in terms of hopping among mesoscopic bricks, i.e., grains. The results suggest a general approach to describe disordered van der Waals thin films.
