RESUMEN

Angiomyolipoma (AML) is a rare benign mesenchymal tumor in the liver, which is composed of blood vessels, smooth muscle, and adipose cells. The proportion of each component varies, making a diagnosis difficult. This paper reports a case of AML in the liver without adipose tissue, mimicking a hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which was diagnosed by a surgical tissue biopsy. A 65-year-old woman was admitted for an evaluation of a hepatic mass that had been detected by ultrasonography. The serologic markers of viral hepatitis B and C were negative. The liver function tests and alpha fetoprotein level were within the normal limits. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 1.9 cm sized mass in segment 6 of the liver with early arterial enhancement and washout on the delayed phase accompanied by a rim-like enhancement, which is similar to the imaging findings of HCC. A frozen section examination during surgery indicated a hepatocellular neoplasm and suggested the possibility of HCC. On the other hand, the final pathologic diagnosis was epithelioid myoid type of AML with no adipose tissue component. The tumor cells were positive for human melanocyte B-45 and negative for cytokeratin and hepatocyte paraffin 1. This paper reports a very rare case of AML without adipose tissue in the liver mimicking HCC that was diagnosed by a surgical tissue biopsy.

RESUMEN

Design and synthesis of a new series of 5,6-diarylimidazo[2,1-b]thiazole derivatives possessing terminal aryl sulfonamide moiety are described. Their in vitro antiproliferative activities against a panel of 57 human cancer cell lines of nine different cancer types were tested at the NCI. Compounds 8a, 8b, 8n, 8q, 8t, and 8u showed the highest mean % inhibition values over the 57 cell line panel at 10 µM, and they were further tested in 5-dose testing mode to determine their IC50 values. Among the six compounds, compound 8u possessing terminal para-hydroxybenzenesulfonamido moiety and ethylene linker showed the highest potency. It demonstrated superior potency than Sorafenib against eight different cell lines, and was equipotent to Sorafenib against COLO 205 colon cancer cell line. Its IC50 values over NCI-H460 non-small cell lung cancer cell line and MCF7 breast cancer cell line were 0.845 µM and 0.476 µM, respectively. Compounds 8a, 8b, 8q, 8t, and 8u showed high selectivity indices towards cancer cells over L132 normal lung cell line. Compound 8u showed potential inhibitory effects over the components of ERK pathway. Its IC50 value over V600E-B-RAF and C-RAF kinases were 39.9 nM and 19.0 nM, respectively.

RESUMEN

On March 11, 2011, as a result of the Great East Japan Earthquake, severe damage to the Fukushima nuclear power plant caused the release of radioactive materials. We conducted radioactive contamination monitoring for Korean residents in Japan and Korean travelers to East Japan after the accident. More than 800 members of the Korean public were surveyed for personal monitoring. Measured levels of external and internal contamination were within the screening levels for each monitoring method.
