RESUMEN

Acupuncture is a non-pharmacological traditional Chinese medical technique that has been used for various types of gastrointestinal (GI) diseases in Eastern medicine. However, the specific mechanisms underlying acupuncture treatment in the GI tract have not yet been elucidated. In this study, we searched the electronic databases PUBMED, EMBASE, and MEDLINE and identified 30 eligible studies that were summarized in this review. This review demonstrates that treatments, including both manual and electroacupuncture, have therapeutic mechanisms in diverse GI diseases. The underlying mechanisms are broadly divided into the following: changes in gene expression in the gastric mucosa or nuclei of the solitary tract, metabolic change induction, regulation of anti-inflammatory substances, vagal activity increase, change in functional connectivity between brain regions, and control of the number of neurons related to GI diseases. Although this study is limited in that it does not represent all types of GI diseases with different acupuncture methods, this study identified acupuncture as effective for GI diseases through various biological mechanisms. We hope that our study will reveal various mechanisms of acupuncture in GI diseases and play an important role in the therapy and treatment of GI diseases, thus advancing the field of study.

2-Functionalised pyrroles exhibit considerable synthetic utility. Herein, the synthesis and reactivity of 2-thionoester (-C(S)OR) pyrroles is reported. 2-Thionoester pyrroles were synthesised using a Knorr-type approach from aliphatic starting materials. 2-Thionoester pyrroles were reduced to the corresponding 2-formyl pyrroles, or the deuterated formyl variant, in one step using RANEY® nickel, thereby removing the need for the much-utilised hydrolysis/decarboxylation/formylation steps that are typically required to convert Knorr-type 2-carboxylate pyrroles into 2-formyl pyrroles. 2-Thionoester pyrroles proved tolerant of typical functional group interconversions for which the parent 2-carboxylate pyrroles have become known.

Multimodal biometrics are promising for providing a strong security level for personal authentication, yet the implementation of a multimodal biometric system for practical usage need to meet such criteria that multimodal biometric signals should be easy to acquire but not easily compromised. We developed a wearable wrist band integrated with multispectral skin photomatrix (MSP) and electrocardiogram (ECG) sensors to improve the issues of collectability, performance and circumvention of multimodal biometric authentication. The band was designed to ensure collectability by sensing both MSP and ECG easily and to achieve high authentication performance with low computation, efficient memory usage, and relatively fast response. Acquisition of MSP and ECG using contact-based sensors could also prevent remote access to personal data. Personal authentication with multimodal biometrics using the integrated wearable wrist band was evaluated in 150 subjects and resulted in 0.2% equal error rate ( EER ) and 100% detection probability at 1% FAR (false acceptance rate) ( PD . 1 ), which is comparable to other state-of-the-art multimodal biometrics. An additional investigation with a separate MSP sensor, which enhanced contact with the skin, along with ECG reached 0.1% EER and 100% PD . 1 , showing a great potential of our in-house wearable band for practical applications. The results of this study demonstrate that our newly developed wearable wrist band may provide a reliable and easy-to-use multimodal biometric solution for personal authentication.

Paclitaxel, a chemotherapeutic drug, induces severe peripheral neuropathy. Gabapentin (GBT) is a first line agent used to treat neuropathic pain, and its effect is mediated by spinal noradrenergic and muscarinic cholinergic receptors. Electro-acupuncture (EA) is used for treating various types of pain via its action through spinal opioidergic and noradrenergic receptors. Here, we investigated whether combined treatment of these two agents could exert a synergistic effect on paclitaxel-induced cold and mechanical allodynia, which were assessed by the acetone drop test and von Frey filament assay, respectively. Significant signs of allodynia were observed after four paclitaxel injections (a cumulative dose of 8 mg/kg, i.p.). GBT (3, 30, and 100 mg/kg, i.p.) or EA (ST36, Zusanli) alone produced dose-dependent anti-allodynic effects. The medium and highest doses of GBT (30 and 100 mg/kg) provided a strong analgesic effect, but they induced motor dysfunction in Rota-rod tests. On the contrary, the lowest dose of GBT (3 mg/kg) did not induce motor weakness, but it provided a brief analgesic effect. The combination of the lowest dose of GBT and EA resulted in a greater and longer effect, without inducing motor dysfunction. This effect on mechanical allodynia was blocked by spinal opioidergic (naloxone, 20 µg), or noradrenergic (idazoxan, 10 µg) receptor antagonist, whereas on cold allodynia, only opioidergic receptor antagonist blocked the effect. In conclusion, the combination of the lowest dose of GBT and EA has a robust and enduring analgesic action against paclitaxel-induced neuropathic pain, and it should be considered as an alternative treatment method.

Oxaliplatin, a chemotherapeutic drug for colorectal cancer, induces severe peripheral neuropathy. Bee venom acupuncture (BVA) has been used to attenuate pain, and its effect is known to be mediated by spinal noradrenergic and serotonergic receptors. Morphine is a well-known opioid used to treat different types of pain. Here, we investigated whether treatment with a combination of these two agents has an additive effect on oxaliplatin-induced neuropathic pain in mice. To assess cold and mechanical allodynia, acetone and von Frey filament tests were used, respectively. Significant allodynia signs were observed three days after an oxaliplatin injection (6 mg/kg, i.p.). BVA (0.25, 1, and 2.5 mg/kg, s.c., ST36) or morphine (0.5, 2, and 5 mg/kg, i.p.) alone showed dose-dependent anti-allodynic effects. The combination of BVA and morphine at intermediate doses showed a greater and longer effect than either BVA or morphine alone at the highest dose. Intrathecal pretreatment with the opioidergic (naloxone, 20 µg) or 5-HT3 (MDL-72222, 15 µg) receptor antagonist, but not with α2 adrenergic (idazoxan, 10 µg) receptor antagonist, blocked this additive effect. Therefore, we suggest that the combination effect of BVA and morphine is mediated by spinal opioidergic and 5-HT3 receptors and this combination has a robust and enduring analgesic action against oxaliplatin-induced neuropathic pain.

Oxaliplatin, a platinum-based chemotherapy drug, often induces acute neuropathic pain, especially cold allodynia, even after a single administration. Subcutaneous injection of diluted bee venom (BV) into acupoints has been used to treat various pain symptoms in traditional oriental medicine. Although we previously demonstrated the suppressive effect of BV injection on oxaliplatin-induced cold allodynia in rats, its neurochemical mechanism remained unclear. This study investigates whether and how the cholinergic system mediates the relieving effect of BV injection on cold allodynia in oxaliplatin-administered rats. The behavioral signs of cold allodynia induced by an oxaliplatin administration (6 mg/kg, intraperitoneally (i.p.)) were evaluated by a tail immersion test in cold water (4°C). BV (0.25 mg/kg, subcutaneously (s.c.)) injection into the Yaoyangguan acupoint, located between the spinous processes of the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae, significantly alleviated the cold allodynia. This relieving effect of BV injection on oxaliplatin-induced cold allodynia was blocked by a pretreatment with mecamylamine (a non-selective nicotinic receptor antagonist, 2 mg/kg, i.p.), but not by atropine (a non-selective muscarinic receptor antagonist, 1 mg/kg, i.p.). Further, dihydro-ß-erythroidinehydrobromide (DHßE, an α4ß2 nicotinic antagonist, 5 mg/kg, i.p.) prevented the anti-allodynic effect of BV, whereas methyllycaconitine (an α7 nicotinic antagonist, 6 mg/kg, i.p.) did not. Finally, intrathecal administration of DHßE (10 nM) blocked the BV-induced anti-allodynic effect. These results suggest that nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, especially spinal α4ß2 receptors, but not muscarinic receptors, mediate the suppressive effect of BV injection on oxaliplatin-induced acute cold allodynia in rats.

A voltammetric diagnosis of a chromium (VI) ion was investigated using a fluorine-doped graphite pencil electrode. Square wave (SW) stripping working conditions were attained at a high range of 0.051-0.45 mg L(-1) and a microrange of 0.05-0.4 microg L(-1) in a 0.1 M NH(4)H(2)PO(4) electrolyte solution, at a relative standard deviation of 1.68% (RSD, n=15), using 10.0 microg L(-1) Cr(VI). A fast experimental time was used only for the 120 sec SW accumulation time. An analytical detection-limit (DL) of 0.008 microg L(-1) was attained. DL appeared to be more sensitive than common voltammetric and spectrophotometric assays. The developed sensor was applied to tap water and the urine of a smoker. It was found that the methods can be applicable for in vivo fluid or medicinal diagnosis.

This paper presents a motion artifact reduction algorithm for a real-time, wireless and wearable photoplethysmography (PPG) device for measuring heart beats. A wearable finger band PPG device consists of a 3-axis accelerometer, infrared LED, photo diode, a microprocessor and wireless module. Sources of the motion artifacts were investigated from the hand motions, through computing the correlations between the three directional finger motions and distorted PPG signals. A two-dimensional active noise cancellation algorithm was applied to compensate the distorted signals by motions, using the directional accelerometer data. NLMS (Normalized Least Mean Square) adaptive filter (4th order) was employed in the algorithm. As a result, the signals' distortion rates were reduced from 52.34% to 3.53%, at frequencies between 1 and 2.5 Hz, which representing daily motions such walking and jogging. The wearable health monitoring device equipped with the motion artifact reduction algorithm can be integrated as a terminal in a so-called ubiquitous healthcare system, which provides a continuous health monitoring without interrupting a daily life.
