RESUMEN

The Korean National Health Insurance Service provided the Health Screening Cohort Database. To investigate the cumulative effect of statins on cancer development, we defined statin users as those who used statins during 2002 to 2003 at baseline. Statin users were divided into high and low users. Statin nonusers were defined as individuals who had never used statins during the entire period of 2002 to 2015, despite having hypercholesterolemia. In total, 17 737 statin users and 13 412 statin nonusers were included in the final analyses. The median follow-up duration was 12.6 years. Compared with nonusers, the hazard ratios (95% confidential intervals) for any cancer incidence of low users and high users were 1.047 (0.941-1.164) and 0.663 (0.589-0.747) in men and 1.057 (0.938-1.190) and 0.592 (0.517-0.678) in women, respectively, after fully adjusting for possible confounding factors. An inverse association between statin use and any cancer incidence in individuals with hypercholesterolemia was observed.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: The New York University (NYU) impactor and the Infinite Horizon (IH) impactor are used to create spinal cord injury (SCI) models. However, the parameters of these two devices that yield equivalent SCI severity remain unclear. PURPOSE: To identify equivalent parameters, rats with SCIs induced by either device set at various parameters were subjected to behavioral and histologic analyses. STUDY DESIGN: This is an animal laboratory study. METHODS: Groups of eight rats acquired SCIs by dropping a 10 g rod from a height of 25 mm or 50 mm by using the NYU device or by delivering a force of 150 kdyn, 175 kdyn, 200 kdyn, or 250 kdyn by using the IH impactor. All injured rats were tested weekly for 8 weeks by using the Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan (BBB) test and the ladder rung test. On the 10th week, the lesion volume of each group was measured by using a 9.4 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and the spinal cords were subjected to histologic analysis using anterograde biotinylated dextran amine (BDA) tracing and immunofluorescence staining with an anti-protein kinase C-gamma (PKC-γ) antibody. RESULTS: Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan test scores between the 25 mm and the 200 kdyn groups as well as between the 50 mm and and 250 kdyn groups were very similar. Although it was not statistically significant, the mean scores of the ladder rung test in the 200 kdyn group were higher than the 25 mm group at all assessment time points. There was a significantly different cavity volume only between the 50 mm and the 200 kdyn groups. Midline sagittal images of the spinal cord on the MRI revealed that the 25 mm group predominantly had dorsal injuries, whereas the 200 kdyn group had deeper injuries. Anterograde tracing with BDA showed that in the 200 kdyn group, the dorsal corticospinal tract of the caudal area of the lesion was labeled. Similar labeling was not observed in the 25 mm group. Immunofluorescence staining of PKC-γ also revealed strong staining of the dorsal corticospinal tract in the 200 kdyn group but not in the 25 mm group. CONCLUSIONS: The 25 mm injuries generated by the NYU impactor are generally equivalent to the 200 kdyn injuries generated by using the IH impactor. However, differences in the ladder rung test scores, MRI images, BDA traces, and PKC-γ staining demonstrate that the two devices exert qualitatively different impacts on the spinal cord.

AIM: To review the surgical outcomes in terms of the surgical indications and relevant prognostic factors. METHODS: Sixteen patients underwent therapeutic lung surgery between March 1999 and May 2006. The observation period was terminated on May 31, 2007. The surgical outcomes and the clinicopathological factors were compared. RESULTS: There was no mortality or major morbidity encountered in this study. The mean follow-up period after metastasectomy was 26.7 +/- 28.2 (range: 1-99 mo), and the median survival time was 20 mo. The 1- and 5-year survival rates were 56% and 26%, respectively. At the end of the follow-up, 1 patient died from hepatic failure without recurrence, 6 died from hepatic failure with a recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and 4 died from recurrent HCC with cachexia. Among several clinical factors, Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that liver transplantation as a treatment for the primary lesion, grade of cell differentiation, and negative evidence HBV infection were independent predictive factors. On Cox's proportional hazard model, there were no significant factors affecting survival after pulmonary metastasectomy in patients with HCC. CONCLUSION: A metastasectomy should be performed before other treatments in selected patients. Although not significant, patients with liver transplantation of a primary HCC survived longer. Liver transplantation might be the most beneficial modality that can offer patients better survival. A multi-institutional and collaborative study would be needed for identifying clinical prognostic factors predicting survival in patients with HCC and lung metastasis.

Root colonization by a plant-beneficial rhizobacterium, Pseudomonas chlororaphis O6, induces disease resistance in tobacco against leaf pathogens Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora SCC1, causing soft-rot, and Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci, causing wildfire. In order to identify the bacterial determinants involved in induced systemic resistance against plant diseases, extracellular components produced by the bacterium were fractionated and purified. Factors in the culture filtrate inducing systemic resistance were retained in the aqueous fraction rather than being partitioned into ethyl acetate. Fractionation on high-performance liquid chromatography followed by nuclear magnetic resonance mass spectrometry analysis identified the active compound as 2R, 3R-butanediol. 2R, 3R butanediol induced systemic resistance in tobacco to E. carotovora subsp. carotovora SCC1, but not to P. syringae pv. tabaci. Treatment of tobacco with the volatile 2R, 3R-butanediol enhanced aerial growth, a phenomenon also seen in plants colonized by P. chlororaphis O6. The isomeric form of the butanediol was important because 2S, 3S-butandiol did not affect the plant. The global sensor kinase, GacS, of P. chlororaphis O6 was a key regulator for induced systemic resistance against E. carotovora through regulation of 2R, 3R-butanediol production. This is the first report of the production of these assumed fermentation products by a pseudomonad and the role of the sensor kinase GacS in production of 2R, 3R-butanediol.

Diafenthiuron, 1-tert-butyl-3-(2,6-di-isopropyl-4-phenoxyphenyl)thiourea, is an effective insecticide and acaricide. Sunlight degradation of diafenthiuron in various aqueous solutions and pure hexane yielded two major identified products: 1-tert-butyl-3-(2,6-di-isopropyl-4-phenoxyphenyl)-carbodiimide (CGA-140,408) and 1-tert-butyl-3-(2,6-di-isopropyl-4-phenoxy-phenyl)urea (CGA-177,960). CGA-140,408 was further photo-transformed into CGA-177,960 by sunlight. Direct photolysis appeared to be a major photolysis pathway of diafenthiuron in the environment. Photodegradation of CGA-140,408 and CGA-177,960 was enhanced in humic acid water, paddy water and aqueous acetone solutions, and followed first-order kinetics. Isopropanol (a radical quencher) and de-aeration strongly inhibited the photolysis of these chemicals, which suggested oxygen radical-mediated reactions.
