RESUMEN

This study investigated the carbonate system and air-sea CO2 exchange in the inshore waters along South Korea's western coastline in 2020. Overlooking these waters might introduce significant errors in estimating air-sea CO2 fluxes of the southeastern Yellow Sea, given their interaction with land, offshore regions, and sediments. During periods other than summer, seasonal variations in seawater CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) could be generally explained by thermal effects. Tidal mixing and shallow depths resulted in weaker stratification-induced carbon export compared to offshore regions. However, during summer, inshore waters exhibited high spatial variability in pCO2, ranging from approximately 185 to 1000 µatm. In contrast to offshore waters that modestly absorbed CO2, inshore waters shallower than 20 m emitted ∼100 Gg C yr-1 to the atmosphere. However, considering the high heterogeneity of the study area, additional observations with high spatial and temporal resolution are required to refine estimates of air-sea CO2 exchange.

RESUMEN

The Arctic is severely affected by climate change and various forms of environmental pollution. Enriched with nutrients and light-absorbing compounds, the wildfire plume has the potential to affect biological carbon fixation and sequestration within the Arctic Ocean. In this study, we utilized satellite-derived oceanic data (phytoplankton and sea ice) and atmospheric reanalysis products (black carbon, BC, indicative of wildfire impact) to evaluate the effect of the pronounced increase in wildfires from 2019 to 2021 on the East Siberian Sea. During these years, chlorophyll-a levels rose by ∼213 % compared to the previous decadal average, which had notably lower wildfire activities. This increase in chlorophyll-a is attributable to the deposition of nitrogen from the wildfire plume. Concurrently, the period required for sea ice concentration to decrease by 25 % was on average âˆ¼ 10 days shorter than usual. This suggests that BC-induced acceleration of sea ice melting might extend the growing season for phytoplankton.

Accurately constraining the natural variability of the carbonate system is essential for evaluating long-term changes in coastal areas, which result from the absorption of anthropogenic CO2. This is particularly important given the significant variation in physical and biological processes in these regions. In this regard, the analysis of surface carbonate chemistry in the Yellow Sea was conducted using discrete seawater samples obtained from the Socheongcho Ocean Research Station (37.423°N, 124.738°E) between 2017 and 2022. Our bottle data and sensor pH measurements revealed considerable seasonal variations of aragonite saturation state (ΩAR), typically ranging from 1.6 to 3.9. These variations are particularly pronounced during the summer and early winter. Our dataset serves as a baseline for understanding the long-term changes in ocean acidification in the Yellow Sea, the complex biogeochemical processes in coastal areas, and their impact on ocean acidification.

Atmospheric deposition of nitrogen is one of the most important external nutrient sources. We investigated the concentrations of NO3- and NH4+ in airborne particles at both an offshore and an inshore site in the Yellow Sea. At the offshore site, devoid of local sources and located downwind from the highly developed areas of Korea and China, the concentrations of atmospheric particulate NO3- and NH4+ were ∼88 ± 101 nmol m-3 and ∼102 ± 102 nmol m-3, respectively, likely due to the transboundary long-range transport of pollutants. The inshore site showed a concentration ∼2 times higher than the offshore site. Considering not only dry inorganic nitrogen deposition but also wet and organic material deposition, the total atmospheric nitrogen deposition was estimated to contribute roughly 10 % to the new production in the Yellow Sea.

Our understanding of the impact of atmospheric acid deposition on marine carbonate system remains limited, largely due to a lack of data regarding acidity present in atmospheric particles and precipitation. Previous research has relied on the electroneutrality-based ion balance method for indirect estimation of atmospheric acidity. In this study, atmospheric samples collected at a coastal site of South Korea were mixed with seawater to measure the change in seawater total alkalinity (ΔTAAPL) associated with atmospheric proton loading. For the precipitation samples, the measured ΔTAAPL and electroneutrality-based estimates showed a significant correlation. However, we did not observe similar results for the atmospheric particle samples. Furthermore, the decrease in oceanic TA due to ΔTAAPL was substantially smaller than that in dissolved inorganic carbon from concurrent nitrogen fertilization. Consequently, the adverse impact of acid deposition on ocean acidification or air-sea exchange of CO2 appears to be insignificant on a short-term scale.

RESUMEN

Aggregation and fibrillization of transthyretin (TTR) is a fatal pathogenic process that can cause cardiomyopathic and polyneuropathic diseases in humans. Although several therapeutic strategies have been designed to prevent and treat related pathological events, there is still an urgent need to develop better strategies to improve potency and wider applicability. Here, we present our study demonstrating that 3-iodothyronamine (T1AM) and selected thyronamine-like compounds can effectively prevent TTR aggregation. T1AM is one of the thyroid hormone (TH) metabolites, and T1AM and its analogs, such as SG2, SG6, and SG12, are notable molecules for their beneficial activities against metabolic disorders and neurodegeneration. Using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and biochemical analysis, we confirmed that T1AM analogs could bind to and suppress acid-induced aggregation of TTR. In addition, we employed computational approaches to further understand the detailed mechanisms of the interaction between T1AM analogs and TTR. This study demonstrates that T1AM analogs, whose beneficial effects against several pathological processes have already been proven, may have additional benefits against TTR aggregation and fibrillization. Moreover, we believe that our work provides invaluable insights to enhance the pleiotropic activity of T1AM and structurally related analogs, relevant for their therapeutic potential, with particular reference to the ability to prevent TTR aggregation.

Two air-stable organic radicals derived from oxalyl chloride and cAAC were synthesized, resulting in the unexpected formation of a known (amino)(carboxy) radical cation ([2]BF4) and the oxidative formation of a 1,2-dicarbonyl radical cation ([3]BF4) from a neutral 3-oxetanone compound (4). The highly strained and newly discovered 4 was obtained by a single-electron reduction of [3]BF4 with a mild reducing agent. This result differs from the generation of NHC-based 1,2-dicarbonyl radicals, indicating the uniqueness of cAAC.

Among the diverse platforms of quantum light sources, epitaxially grown semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are one of the most attractive workhorses for realizing quantum photonic technologies owing to their outstanding brightness and scalability. However, the spatial and spectral randomness of most QDs severely hinders the construction of large-scale photonic platforms. In this work, a methodology is presented to deterministically integrate single QDs with tailor-made photonic structures. A nondestructive luminescence picking method termed as nanoscale-focus pinspot (NFP) is applied using helium-ion microscopy to reduce the luminous QD density while retaining the surrounding medium. A single QD emission is only extracted out of the high-density ensemble QDs. Then the tailor-made photonic structure of a circular Bragg reflector (CBR) is designed and deterministically integrated with the selected QD. Given that the microscopy can image with nanoscale resolution and apply NFP in situ, photonic devices can be deterministically fabricated on target QDs. The extraction efficiency of the NFP-selected QD emission is improved by 25 times after the CBR integration. Since the NFP method only controls the luminescence without destroying the medium, it is applicable to various photonic structures such as photonic waveguides or photonic crystal cavities regardless of materials.

Zn(II), Pd(II), and Cd(II) complexes, [L TH MCl 2 ] (M = Zn, Pd; X = Br, Cl) and [L TH Cd(µ-X)X] n (X = Cl, Br; n = n, 2), supported by the (E)-N 1,N 1-dimethyl-N 2-(thiophen-2-ylmethylene)ethane-1,2-diamine (L TH ) ligand are synthesized and structurally characterized. Density functional theory (DFT) electronic structure calculations and variable-temperature NMR support the presence of two conformers and a dynamic interconversion process of the minor conformer to the major one in solution. It is found that the existence of two relevant complex conformers and their respective ratios in solution depend on the central metal ions and counter ions, either Cl- or Br-. Among the two relevant conformers, a single conformer is crystallized and X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a distorted tetrahedral geometry for Zn(II) complexes, and a distorted square planar and square pyramidal geometry for Pd(II) and Cd(II) complexes, respectively. It is shown that [L TH MCl 2 ]/LiO i Pr (M = Zn, Pd) and [L TH Cd(µ-Cl)Cl] n /LiO i Pr can effectively catalyze the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) reaction of rac-lactide (rac-LA) with 94% conversion within 30 s with [L TH ZnCl 2 ]/LiO i Pr at 0 °C. Overall, hetero-enriched poly(lactic acid)s (PLAs) were provided by these catalytic systems with [L TH ZnCl 2 ]/LiO i Pr producing PLA with higher heterotactic bias (P r up to 0.74 at 0 °C).

GaAs-on-Si templates with two different dislocation filter layers (DFLs) were grown at 550 °C low-temperature (LT)-DFL and 660 °C high-temperature (HT)-DFL using metal organic vapor-phase epitaxy and the effects of the growth temperature were studied. The threading dislocation density (TDD) values of LT-DFL and HT-DFL were 5.2 × 107 cm-2 and 1.5 × 107 cm-2, respectively. The 1.5 × 107 cm-2 of TDD in HT-DFL is reduced by almost one order compared to the 1.2 × 108 cm-2 of that in the control sample without DFLs. The annihilation process was mainly observed in the HT-DFL by a transmission electron microscope, resulting in a lower TDD. The 500-nm-thick GaAs bulk layer and InAs QDs were regrown on GaAs-on-Si templates and the optical properties were also evaluated by photoluminescence (PL). The highest PL peak intensity of the HT-DFL indicates that less non-radiative recombination in both the GaAs bulk and QDs occurred due to the reduced TDD. The GaAs p-i-n diodes were also fabricated to analyze the bulk leakage (JB) and the surface leakage current. The JB of HT-DFL shows the lowest value of 3.625 × 10-7 A/cm-2 at applied bias voltage of 1 V, which is 20 times lower than the JB of the control sample without DFLs. This supports that the high-temperature growth of DFL can make a good performance GaAs device on Si.

The copper molten marks at a fire site provide important clues for determining the causes of fire. Four factors have been presented to quantitatively discriminate copper molten marks, namely the fraction of (001) component perpendicular to the demarcation line, the grain aspect ratio, the fraction of Σ3 boundaries, and the fraction of maximum grain size. However, only laboratory-level results of these parameters have been presented, and their applicability in actual fires is yet to be verified. In this study, a fire reproduction experimental system was configured to generate molten marks similar to those in actual fire sites. The molten marks were measured by electron backscatter diffraction and applied to the four discriminant factors. The results obtained similar characteristics to those of the laboratory unit, confirming the applicability of the four discriminant factors. Discriminant equations and processes that can distinguish the primary and secondary arc beads were derived using the molten marks generated in the laboratory and reproduction experiments. Furthermore, a probabilistic discrimination method and classification model developed by machine learning were proposed. Therefore, the use of the discriminants in actual fires can improve the reliability of the statistics and prevent the recurrence of similar fires.

This study evaluated interannual variation in the subsurface aragonite undersaturation zone (ΩAr<1 layer) in the Pacific Arctic Ocean, using data from the 2016-2019 period. The upper boundary (DEPΩ<1UB) of the ΩAr<1 layer generally formed at a depth where the contribution of corrosive Pacific water was approximately 98 %. The intensity of the Beaufort Gyre associated with freshwater accumulation mainly determined interannual variation in DEPΩ<1UB, but the direction of its effect was opposite west and east of ~166°W. The lower boundary (DEPΩ<1LB) of the ΩAr<1 layer was generally found at a depth range where equal contributions of Pacific and Atlantic water were expected. An Atlantic-origin cold saline water intrusion event in 2017 caused by an anomalous atmospheric circulation pattern significantly lifted the DEPΩ<1LB, thus the thickness of the ΩAr<1 layer decreased.

The microstructure of molten marks changes according to ambient temperatures, when a short circuit occurs. Investigation of microstructural changes is important for understanding the properties of copper and examining the cause of a fire. In this study, the boundary characteristics and grain-size distribution of molten marks-primary-arc beads (PABs), which short-circuited at room temperature (25 °C), and secondary-arc beads (SABs), which short-circuited at high temperatures (600 °C, 900 °C)-were compared using electron backscatter diffraction. The distribution of Σ3 boundaries was compared, and it was found that SABs have a higher fraction of Σ3 boundaries than PABs. Moreover, it was confirmed that the ratio of maximum grain size (area) to the total area of the molten mark in SABs is larger than that in PABs. Thus, reliable discriminant factors were suggested, such as the fraction of Σ3 boundaries and normalized maximum grain size, which can distinguish PABs and SABs. The four discriminant factors, such as the (001)//LD, GAR, fraction of Σ3 boundaries, and fraction of maximum grain size to the total molten-mark area, were verified using the machine learning of t-SNE and Pearson correlation analyses.

Surface carbonate chemistry in the Yellow Sea was investigated based on discrete seawater samples collected from 2017 to 2020 at the Socheongcho Ocean Research Station (S-ORS; 37.423°N, 124.738°E). Records of carbon parameters, including seawater CO2 partial pressure (pCO2), revealed considerable seasonal variations, with amplitudes comparable to those observed across the western part of the Yellow Sea. The study site acted as a modest sink (-0.13 mol C m-2 yr-1) for atmospheric CO2. Biological processes (primary production and respiration) and physical conditions (temperature and degree of stratification) determined seawater pCO2, which fluctuated on an intraseasonal timescale between oversaturated and undersaturated with respect to atmospheric pCO2. Variation in pCO2 was significant in summer, depending on the biological carbon drawdown and tidal mixing-induced upwelling (increased pCO2 up to ~1000 µatm). The intraseasonal variability in seawater pCO2 may bias estimated air-sea CO2 fluxes, if measurements with a coarser (seasonal) time resolution are used.

Aggregation of amyloidogenic proteins causing neurodegenerative diseases is an uncontrollable and contagious process that is often associated with lipid membranes in a highly complex physiological environment. Although several approaches using natural cells and membrane models have been reported, systematic investigations focusing on the association with the membranes are highly challenging, mostly because of the lack of proper molecular tools. Here, we report a new supramolecular approach using a synthetic cell system capable of controlling the initiation of protein aggregation and mimicking various conditions of lipid membranes, thereby enabling systematic investigations of membrane-dependent effects on protein aggregation by visualization. Extending this strategy through concurrent use of synthetic cells and natural cells, we demonstrate the potential of this approach for systematic and in-depth studies on interrogating inter- and intracellularly transmittable protein aggregation. Thus, this new approach offers opportunities for gaining insights into the pathological implications of contagious protein aggregation associated with membranes for neurotoxicity.

A rationally designed supramolecular FRET pair consisting of cyanine3-cucurbit[7]uril (Cy3-CB[7]) and boron-dipyrromethene 630/650-adamantylammonium (BDP-AdA) can be used to visualize organelle-specific autophagy events. The intracellular accumulations of Cy3-CB[7] in lysosomes and BDP-AdA in lipid droplets (LDs) and the formation of an intracellular host-guest complex between Cy3-CB[7] and BDP-AdA resulting in FRET signals allow us to visualize the fusion of LDs with lysosomes, namely, lipophagy. This study demonstrates the potential of supramolecular imaging based on bio-orthogonal host-guest interactions in the investigation of selective autophagy events.

Here, we report the synthesis of a truncated cone-shaped triangular porphyrinic macrocycle, P3 L3 , via a single step imine condensation of a cis-diaminophenylporphyrin and a bent dialdehyde-based linker as building units. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the truncated cone-shaped P3 L3 molecules are stacked on top of each other by π⋯π and CH⋯π interactions, to form 1.7 nm wide hollow columns in the solid state. The formation of the triangular macrocycle is corroborated by quantum chemical calculations. The permanent porosity of the P3 L3 crystals is demonstrated by several gas sorption experiments and powder X-ray diffraction analysis.

One of the challenging issues in free-space quantum key distribution (QKD) is the requirement of active compensation of the reference frame between the transmitter and receiver. Reference frame independent (RFI) QKD removes active compensation, but it requires more quantum states. A recent proposal can effectively reduce the required quantum states, but this can be achieved assuming the correlations defined in RFI QKD are symmetric. In a real QKD system, such symmetric correlations cannot always be satisfied owing to the device imperfections and optical misalignment. We theoretically analyze the effect of asymmetric correlations. Consequently, we report that the asymmetry causes security loopholes and provide a countermeasure to prevent them. Furthermore, we provide the experimental results of a free-space RFI QKD system to verify the countermeasure for the aforementioned problem. In conclusion, our work provides feasibility of the practical RFI QKD system with fewer quantum states by effectively preventing the security loophole.

We evaluated the potential impacts of atmospheric deposition on marine productivity and inorganic carbon chemistry in the northwestern Pacific Ocean (8-39°N, 125-157°E). The nutrient concentration in atmospheric total suspended particles decreased exponentially with increasing distance from the closest land-mass (Asia), clearly revealing anthropogenic and terrestrial contributions. The predicted mean depositional fluxes of inorganic nitrogen were approximately 34 and 15 µmol m-2 d-1 to the west and east of 140°E, respectively, which were at least two orders of magnitude greater than the inorganic phosphorus flux. On average, atmospheric particulate deposition would support 3-4% of the net primary production along the surveyed tracks, which is equivalent to ~2% of the dissolved carbon increment caused by the penetration of anthropogenic CO2. Our observations generally fell within the ranges observed over the past 18 years, despite an increasing trend of atmospheric pollution in the source regions during the same period, which implies high temporal and spatial variabilities of atmospheric nutrient concentration in the study area. Continued atmospheric anthropogenic nitrogen deposition may alter the relative abundances of nitrogen and phosphorus.

Thyromimetics, whose physicochemical characteristics are analog to thyroid hormones (THs) and their derivatives, are promising candidates as novel therapeutics for neurodegenerative and metabolic pathologies. In particular, sobetirome (GC-1), one of the initial halogen-free thyromimetics, and newly synthesized IS25 and TG68, with optimized ADME-Tox profile, have recently attracted attention owing to their superior therapeutic benefits, selectivity, and enhanced permeability. Here, we further explored the functional capabilities of these thyromimetics to inhibit transthyretin (TTR) amyloidosis. TTR is a homotetrameric transporter protein for THs, yet it is also responsible for severe amyloid fibril formation, which is facilitated by tetramer dissociation into non-native monomers. By combining nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, computational simulation, and biochemical assays, we found that GC-1 and newly designed diphenyl-methane-based thyromimetics, namely IS25 and TG68, are TTR stabilizers and efficient suppressors of TTR aggregation. Based on these observations, we propose the novel potential of thyromimetics as a multi-functional therapeutic molecule for TTR-related pathologies, including neurodegenerative diseases.
