RESUMEN

Ecological macroalgal succession in glacier-free areas has remained at the pioneer seral stage despite six decades of glacial retreat at Marian Cove, King George Island, Antarctica. With the rapid melting of glaciers in the West Antarctic Peninsula owing to global warming, a massive amount of meltwater is flowing into the coast, creating marine environmental gradients such as turbidity, water temperature, and salinity. This study examined the spatial and vertical distributions (up to a depth of 25 m) of macroalgal assemblages from nine sites in Maxwell Bay and Marian Cove. The macroalgal assemblages were analyzed for six sites located 0.2, 0.8, 1.2, 2.2, 3.6, and 4.1 km away from the glacier, including three sites where the glacial retreat history of Marian Cove could be estimated. To investigate the effects of meltwater, differences in the coastal environment were analyzed based on data collected from five stations located 0.4, 0.9, 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0 km away from the glacier. The macroalgal assemblages and marine environment were divided into two groups-inside and outside the cove-based on the region 2-3 km away from the glacier, which has been ice-free since 1956 and shows significant differences. In the three sites near the glacier front, Palmaria decipiens was dominant, and three to four species were distributed, whereas in the two sites outside the cove, nine and 14 species appeared, respectively, similar to the assemblage of the other three sites in Maxwell Bay. Palmaria decipiens, a representative opportunistic pioneer species in Antarctica, is dominant because of its physiological adaptation despite the high turbidity and low water temperature of the glacier front. This study shows that macroalgal assemblages in Antarctic fjord-like coves respond to glacial retreat and are valuable in understanding the macroalgal succession in Antarctica.

The intestine and skin provide crucial protection against the external environment. Strengthening the epithelial barrier function of these organs is critical for maintaining homeostasis against inflammatory stimuli. Recent studies suggest that polar marine algae are a promising bioactive resource because of their adaptation to extreme environments. To investigate the bioactive properties of polar marine algae on epithelial cells of the intestine and skin, we created extracts of the Antarctic macroalgae Himantothallus grandifolius, Plocamium cartilagineum, Phaeurus antarcticus, and Kallymenia antarctica, analyzed the compound profiles of the extracts using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and tested the protective activities of the extracts on human intestinal and keratinocyte cell lines by measuring cell viability and reactive oxygen species scavenging. In addition, we assessed immune responses modulated by the extracts by real-time polymerase chain reaction, and we monitored the barrier-protective activities of the extracts on intestinal and keratinocyte cell lines by measuring transepithelial electrical resistance and fluorescence-labeled dextran flux, respectively. We identified bioactive compounds, including several fatty acids and lipid compounds, in the extracts, and found that the extracts perform antioxidant activities that remove intracellular reactive oxygen species and scavenge specific radicals. Furthermore, the Antarctic marine algae extracts increased cell viability, protected cells against inflammatory stimulation, and increased the barrier integrity of cells damaged by lipopolysaccharide or ultraviolet radiation. These results suggest that Antarctic marine algae have optimized their composition for polar environments, and furthermore, that the bioactive properties of compounds produced by Antarctic marine algae can potentially be used to develop therapeutics to promote the protective barrier function of the intestine and skin.

Oral-facial-digital syndrome type 1 (OFD1), first described by Papillon-Léage in 1954, is transmitted as an X-linked dominant condition and is characterized by a combination of malformations in the face, oral cavity, and digits. Malformations of the brain and polycystic kidney disease are also commonly associated with OFD1. An 11-month-old female presented with multiple tiny whitish papules on her face that had been present since birth. The histopathologic examination was consistent with milium. She also had congenital anomalies, including incomplete cleft palate, bifid tongue, short frenulum, anomalous deformities of both toes, and clino-brachy-syndactyly. Based on the characteristic dysmorphic features of her face, mouth, and hands, a clinical diagnosis of OFD1 was made. Herein, we report a rare case of OFD1 featuring congenital milia, which has not been previously reported in the Korean literature.

A new type of remote red quantum-dot (QD) component was designed and fabricated to improve the color-rendering properties of conventional white LED (light-emitting diode) lightings. Based on an optical simulation, the rectangular cavity-type QD cap was designed with an opening window on the top surface. Red QD caps were fabricated using a typical injection molding technique and CdSe/ZnS QDs with a core/shell structure whose average size was ~6 nm. Red QD caps were applied to conventional 6-inch, 15-W white LED downlighting consisting of 72 LEDs arrayed concentrically. The red QD caps placed over white LEDs enhanced the red components in the long-wavelength range resulting in the increase of the color rendering index (CRI) from 82.9 to 94.5. The correlated color temperature was tuned easily in a wide range by adopting various configurations consisting of different QD caps. The spatial and angular homogeneities were secured on the emitting area because QD caps placed over the white LEDs did not exhibit any substantial optical path length difference. The present study demonstrates that adopting QD caps in conventional LED lightings provides a flexible and efficient method to realize a high color-rendering property and to adjust correlated color temperature appropriately for a specific application.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Antarctic fairy shrimp Branchinectagaini Daday, 1910 was sequenced, assembled and annotated using next-generation sequencing technology. The mitogenome of B.gaini is circular at 15,536 bp in length, consisting of 13 protein-coding genes, 23 tRNAs, two rRNAs and two major non-coding regions. In particular, there are two tRNAGly genes and one non-coding region between these two tRNAGly genes. A phylogenetic tree was constructed using concatenated amino acid sequences of 13 protein-coding genes. It reveals that B.gaini is clustered with the Anostraca group within the Branchiopoda clade. This study helps us understand the evolution of Anostraca.

A long-term change of a subtidal macroalgal assemblage has been investigated in Maxwell Bay, King George Island (KGI) of the Antarctic coast by a revisit survey after 30 years. Field surveys were done by SCUBA diving at six sites in 2016-2018 to directly compare with the previous survey conducted in 1988-1993 at the same sites. The total number of macroalgal species was similar between the previous and the present survey, 25 and 27 species respectively. However, the macroalgal assemblage changed substantially with the average similarity of 48.2% between the two surveys. Also, the species-level abundance showed a high variability between surveys. On the other hand, over the 30 years interval there was little overall change at the between-site level hierarchical structure in the subtidal communities of Maxwell Bay. The sites near the penguin rookery consistently showed the highest biodiversity, indicating the importance of land-based nutrients input in Antarctic coastal habitats. A noticeable pattern change over 30 years was the increase of Desmarestia complex and Plocamium cartilagineum and the decrease of Himantothallus grandifolius. Both groups are still dominant, but the shift from Himantothallus to Desmarestia-Plocamium may reflects temperature rise on the Maxwell Bay coast compared to the past.

The community structure and assemblages of marine benthic organisms were investigated in coastal areas near the Jang Bogo Antarctic Research Station in Terra Nova Bay during the 2012-2018 summer seasons. We also examined the recovery pattern of marine benthic organisms following disturbance due to the construction of the Jang Bogo Station. A total of 26 taxa were identified in the study area during the experimental period. Species number and diversity indices (richness, evenness, and diversity) were relatively low compared to data previously reported from Terra Nova Bay. Sphaerotylus antarcticus, Clavularia frankliniana, Hydractinia sp., Iridaea cordata, Fragilariopsis spp., Alcyonium antarcticum, and Metalaeospira pixelli were the dominant species in this area. Of these, the diatom Fragilariopsis spp. were the most abundant species, indicating their key role in maintaining the marine benthic community and controlling biogeochemical cycling. During the construction of the Jang Bogo Station, sediment coverage increased and diatoms declined due to the release of sediment into the coastal area. In February 2014, one month after the disturbance due to cyclone, the diatom coverage increased dramatically and thereby species number, richness index, and diversity index steadily rose from 2015 to 2018. However, non-metric multidimensional scaling ordination analysis of species similarities among sampling times showed that community structure had not completely recovered by 2018. Thus, long-term monitoring is required to elucidate the post-disturbance settlement mechanisms of marine benthic organisms at the study area in Terra Nova Bay.

BACKGROUND: Cordyceps militarys water extract (CME) has been reported to exert antitumor and immunomodulatory activities in vivo and in vitro. However, the therapeutic mechanism has not yet been elucidated. In this study, we examined the effects of CME on the antigen presenting function of antigen presenting cells (APCs). METHODS: Dendritic cells (DCs) were cultured in the presence of CME, and then allowed to phagocytose microspheres containing ovalbumin (OVA). After washing and fixing the efficacy of OVA, peptide presentation by DCs were evaluated using CD8 and CD4 T cells. Also, we confirmed the protein levels of proinflammatory cytokines through western blot analysis. RESULTS: CME enhanced both MHC class I and class II-restricted presentation of OVA in DCs. In addition, the expression of both MHC class I and II molecules was enhanced, but there was no changes in the phagocytic activity of exogenous OVA. Furthermore, CME induced the protein levels of iNOS, COX-2, proinflammatory cytokines, and nuclear p65 in a concentration-dependent manner, as determined by western blot. CONCLUSION: These results provide an understanding of the mechanism of the immuno-enhancing activity of CME on the induction of MHC-restricted antigen presentation in relation to their actions on APCs.
