RESUMEN

The study aimed to identify the innovative leadership qualities of Generation X and Y nurses and explore factors affecting these qualities in both generations. This cross-sectional study was conducted with 324 teaching and research hospital nurses. Data were gathered using a Personal Information Form and the Innovative Leadership Scale from October 2021 to March 2022. Descriptive statistics were applied, followed by Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis H tests, and multiple linear regression. Of the nurses, 34% were Generation X, while 66% were Generation Y. Both Generation X and Y nurses exhibited high scores of innovative leadership, with no significant difference in their overall scale scores. Generation X nurses scored higher on average in the subscales of being entrepreneur, motivating others, and being energetic. In contrast, Generation Y nurses excelled in being open to new ideas and being a changemaker. The factors influencing nurses' innovative leadership qualities included their educational level, position, work clinic, clinical experience, shift type, and perception of themselves as leaders. These results suggest that nurses from both generations manifest differing innovative leadership qualities.

BACKGROUND: Work alienation in nursing can create various problems that affect the quality of work life of nurses, which should be addressed from different perspectives. AIMS: This study investigated the relationship between work alienation and the quality of work life, aiming to determine the factors affecting nurses' quality of work life. DESIGN: This is a descriptive and cross-sectional study that used the STROBE guidelines to prepare this study report. METHODS: The study was conducted between March and June 2022 in Turkey with 303 nurses. It used an online questionnaire with a simple random sampling. Data were collected using a descriptive characteristics form, the Work Alienation Scale, and the Quality of Nursing Work Life Scale. The data were analyzed with Pearson correlation and multiple regression analysis. RESULTS: There was a significant negative correlation between work alienation and the quality of work life. Four independent variables with 58.2% impact on the nurses' quality of work life were identified, including participation in the decision-making process, the ability to use initiative during the production of the service, the significance of the work for the individual, and the type of institution. CONCLUSIONS: The nurses' work alienation score was moderate, and their quality of work life score was high. An increase in the feeling of work alienation statistically decreased the quality of work life. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY: Nurses who experience work alienation may face a decline in their quality of work life that may have an adverse effect on their work performance and work satisfaction.

BACKGROUND: Nucleic acid-based assays provide an opportunity to screen for genetically encoded diseases like spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), before the onset of symptoms. Nowadays, such assays could be easily utilized as high-throughputs in SMA to detect a homozygous deletion of exon 7 of the survival motor neuron 1 gene (SMN1) that is responsible for >95% of SMA patients. METHODS: We developed a new line method (NLM) as a direct real time PCR test procedure without nucleic acid extraction in dried blood spots (DBS) to screen for homozygous deletion of exon 7 of the SMN1 gene. Performance of this setup was evaluated on 580 DBS newborn samples and air dried 50 DBS from whole blood including 20 samples for homozygous deletion of the SMN1 gene detected earlier with MLPA. RESULTS: We found all 580 newborn DBS samples as wild type. DBS prepared from 50 whole blood samples also including 20 affected people were correctly identified as homozygous deletions and 30 wild types of exon 7 of SMN1 as before with MLPA. When the MLPA method was taken as the gold standard, the sensitivity and specificity of the NLM test were found 100% for the detection of SMN1 exon 7 homozygous deletion. CONCLUSION: In the NLM, the total test duration has been reduced to less than 75 min without requiring any extra process such as DNA extraction step and sample plate preparation after the punching step. Thereby, newborn SMA screening with the NLM has gained an environmentally friendly feature with not requiring additional tedious steps.

AIMS: To determine whether nurses' personality traits impact their levels of compassion fatigue. BACKGROUNDS: Compassion fatigue has become one of nursing literature's most discussed and investigated topics. Although some nurses working in the same environment and under similar conditions are more resistant to compassion fatigue, some are at risk of it. METHODS: This descriptive study was conducted with 451 nurses selected using a simple random sampling method in Turkey. Data were collected using web-based online survey forms between February and April 2022. A questionnaire form regarding personal traits and professional characteristics, the Compassion Fatigue-Short Scale, and Basic Personality Traits Inventory were used to collect the data. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, Pearson correlation, and multiple linear regression analysis. RESULTS: The nurses' compassion fatigue was moderate, and personality traits were found to be agreeableness, conscientiousness, and extraversion, respectively. There was a negative correlation between compassion fatigue and personality traits of extraversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and openness to experience, yet a positive correlation with neuroticism and negative valence. According to the regression analysis, nurses' personality traits were effective on compassion fatigue by 21.9%. The personality trait of extraversion had a negative impact on compassion fatigue, and neuroticism had a positive impact. CONCLUSION: This study identified a correlation between nurses' personality traits and compassion fatigue, suggesting that certain personality traits can be predictive factors of compassion fatigue. The limited number of studies discussing personality traits and compassion fatigue together increases the importance of the current study, which may shed light on future studies to be conducted on similar topics. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND OTHER POLICIES: This study has important implications for nurse managers. Nurse managers can predict whether they may experience compassion fatigue based on their personality traits.

AIM: This study conducted a bibliometric analysis of nursing publications on the COVID-19 between 1 January 2020, and 24 October 2021. BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has been a hot research topic that has attracted many researchers from various disciplines. One of the ways to combat the COVID-19 pandemic is to produce knowledge and present it with a holistic approach. Therefore, it is crucial to make bibliometric and content analyses of scientific publications. Scientific data should be evaluated to keep up with the developments in the nursing profession and practices during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Data were collected from the Web of Science database. The sample consisted of 1280 publications that met the inclusion criteria. The data were analysed using descriptive content and bibliometric analysis. The VOSviewer, a mapping and visualization software program, was used for bibliometric analysis. RESULTS: The United States is one of the countries with the highest number of publications, citations and international cooperation during the pandemic. Of all these publications, 1183 (92.42%) are original articles. The Journal of Nursing Management has the highest number of publications and citations. The publications focus primarily on the topics of COVID-19, pandemic, nursing, coronavirus and nurses. The current topics that the publications address are online education, online learning, practice, nursing student, perceived stress, stress, fear, quality of life and experience to determine the impacts of the pandemic on mental health nursing education. CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic has an impact on nursing, and the number of publications is increasing worldwide. In the early days of the pandemic, researchers focused on the topics of coronavirus infections, infection control, global health, health policy and nursing policy. Afterward, they addressed current topics, such as education and the psychological effects of the pandemic. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: Our results will help nurse managers identify issues related to COVID-19 that have not been researched yet and have not been adequately explained in their own institutions. They will also help them choose appropriate journals to get their studies published, appropriate countries to cooperate with and access information about the studies on the subject matter. Our results will also help them make evidence-based decisions about mental health and nursing education.

BACKGROUND: Data on the long-term effects of neonatal acute kidney injury (AKI) are limited. METHODS: We invited 302 children who had neonatal AKI and survived to hospital discharge; out of 95 patients who agreed to participate in the study, 23 cases were excluded due to primary kidney, cardiac, or metabolic diseases. KDIGO definition was used to define AKI. When a newborn had no previous serum creatinine, AKI was defined as serum creatinine above the mean plus two standard deviations (SD) (or above 97.5th percentile) according to gestational age, weight, and postnatal age. Clinical and laboratory features in the neonatal AKI period were recorded for 72 cases; at long-term evaluation (2-12 years), kidney function tests with glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) by the Schwartz formula, microalbuminuria, office and 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM), and kidney ultrasonography were performed. RESULTS: Forty-two patients (58%) had stage I AKI during the neonatal period. Mean age at long-term evaluation was 6.8 ± 2.9 years (range: 2.3-12.0); mean eGFR was 152.3 ± 26.5 ml/min/1.73 m2. Office hypertension (systolic and/or diastolic BP ≥ 95th percentile), microalbuminuria (> 30 mg/g creatinine), and hyperfiltration (> 187 ml/min/1.73 m2) were present in 13.0%, 12.7%, and 9.7% of patients, respectively. ABPM was performed on 27 patients, 18.5% had hypertension, and 40.7% were non-dippers; 48.1% had abnormal findings. Female sex was associated with microalbuminuria; low birth weight (< 1,500 g) and low gestational age (< 32 weeks) were associated with hypertension by ABPM. Twenty-three patients (33.8%) had at least one sign of microalbuminuria, office hypertension, or hyperfiltration. Among 27 patients who had ABPM, 16 (59.3%) had at least one sign of microalbuminuria, abnormal ABPM (hypertension and/or non-dipping), or hyperfiltration. CONCLUSION: Even children who experienced stage 1 and 2 neonatal AKI are at risk for subclinical kidney dysfunction. Non-dipping is seen in four out of 10 children. Long-term follow-up of these patients is necessary.

OBJECTIVE: To introduce the effect of a single course of betamethasone for pregnant women at risk of preterm delivery (PTD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, a single course of 12 mg Bethamethasone was administered twice in 24 h (between 24-34 gestational weeks) for antenatal corticosteroid prophylaxis. Four hundred ninety-three neonates fulfilled the inclusion criteria and they were categorized (259 singletons, 192 twins and 42 triplets who met the inclusion criteria) into two groups according to the utilization of antenatal corticosteroid as control (n = 202) and study (n = 291) groups. We used respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), congenital pneumonia, intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), neonatal sepsis, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) as primary outcomes for the evaluation of neonatal morbidity. RESULTS: Study and control groups were similar in terms of clinical characteristics. RDS, congenital pneumonia, neonatal sepsis, and BPD rates were significantly higher in the study group (betamethasone) (p = .05, p = .007, 0.003, and 0.004, respectively) between 24-34 gestational weeks (when the neonates of multiple pregnancies were excluded from the analysis, we have demonstrated that congenital pneumonia (p = .033) and neonatal sepsis (p = .030) were still significantly higher in the betamethasone group). The neonates of 24-28 gestational weeks were compared separately and we demonstrated that RDS (p = .012), congenital pneumonia (p = .022), IVH (p = .044), neonatal sepsis (p = .023), and BPD (0.001) were also more frequent in the study group. When the 28-32 gestational week data were compared, IVH (p = .020) and neonatal sepsis (p = .017) were more frequent in the single course betamethasone users. However, we could not demonstrate a significant difference between the control and study groups between 32-34 gestational weeks in terms of the primary neonatal outcomes used in this study. CONCLUSION: Single course antenatal betamethasone administration may be ineffective on the respiratory complications of preterm and very preterm infants while it may be unfavorable for extremely preterm infants. WHAT IS NEW ABOUT THE PAPER, WHAT COULD ADD TO THE CURRENT KNOWLEDGE: Pregnant women at risk for preterm labor must be under intensive antenatal care programs, and if possible, necessary precautions must be undertaken to prevent fetal hypoxia together with etiology specific treatments. This approach might contribute to better perinatal outcomes than just administering antenatal corticosteroid therapy.

Introduction: The exact definition of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infant is still controversial among clinicians. In this study, we aimed to understand which definition is better in terms of establishing both early postnatal problems and growth. In this way, we compared early neonatal problems and infancy growth of term infants with birth weight (BW) < -2 SDS and with BW between 10th percentile (-1.28 SDS) and -2 SDS. Methods: A single center retrospective cohort study was conducted. Preterm infants, multiple gestations and newborns with any congenital anomalies were excluded from the study. Study group was defined as Group 1 (n = 37), infants BW < -2.00 SDS; Group 2 (n = 129), between -1.28 and -2.00 SDS; and Group 3 (n = 137), randomly selected newborns with optimal-for-gestational-age (BW between -0.67 and +0.67 SDS) as a control group. Results: The incidence of severe hypoglycemia was highest in Group 1 (%10.8) and Group 2 and 3 had similar rates of severe hypoglycemia (0.8 and 0.7%, respectively). The incidence of polycythemia was 5.4% in Group 1 and was significantly higher than Group 3 (0.0%) while it was 2.3% in Group 2. Short stature (length < -2 SDS) ratio at the age of 1 and 2 years were similar in each group. Overweight/obesity ratio at the age of 1 were 9.5, 20.8 and 16.7% in each group, respectively (p = 0.509). Conclusion: This study was planned as a pilot study to determine potential differences in the problems of hypoglycemia, polycythemia, and growth according to the differences in definition. Short term disturbances such as hypoglycemia and polycythemia are found to be higher in infants with a BW SDS below -2. From this point of view, of course, it will not be possible to change the routine applications immediately, however this study will be an initiative for discussions by making long-term studies.

[Ni0.4Cu0.2Zn0.4](Fe2-x Dy x )O4 spinel ferrite nanoparticles with different Dy3+ concentrations (0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.04) were prepared by a citrate sol-gel auto-combustion technique. A strong correlation among Dy concentration, structural parameters, and magnetic, electrical, and microwave properties was established. An increase in the Dy3+ concentration is the reason for a rise in the crystal structure parameters (due to different ionic radii of Fe and Dy ions) and a slight increase in the average particle size with a minor reduction in the specific surface area. It was observed that Dy3+ ions prefer to occupy the octahedral B site due to their large ionic radius (0.91 Å). The explanation of the electrical and magnetic properties was given in terms of the features of Dy3+-O2--Fe3+ dysprosium-oxygen-iron indirect exchange. The occurrence of the intensive changes in amplitude-frequency characteristics was observed from 1.6 to 2.7 GHz. The explanation of electromagnetic absorption was given in terms of the peculiarities of the microstructure (resonance of domain boundaries). The results open perspectives in the utilization of [Ni0.4Cu0.2Zn0.4](Fe2-x Dy x )O4 spinel ferrite nanoparticles as functional materials for targeted drug delivery and hyperthermia applications.

Introduction: Restricted or enhanced intrauterine growth is associated with elevated risks of early and late metabolic problems in humans. Metabolomics based on amino acid and carnitine/acylcarnitine profile may have a role in fetal and early postnatal energy metabolism. In this study, the relationship between intrauterine growth status and early metabolomics profile was evaluated. Materials and Methods: A single-center retrospective cohort study was conducted. Three hundred and sixty-one newborn infants were enrolled into the study, and they were grouped according to their birth weight percentile as small for gestational age (SGA, n = 69), appropriate for gestational age (AGA, n = 168), and large for gestational age (LGA, n = 124) infants. In all infants, amino acid and carnitine/acylcarnitine profiles with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) were recorded and compared between groups. Results: LGA infants had higher levels of glutamic acid and lower levels of ornithine, alanine, and glycine (p < 0.05) when compared with AGA infants. SGA infants had higher levels of alanine and glycine levels when compared with AGA and LGA infants. Total carnitine, C0, C2, C4, C5, C10:1, C18:1, C18:2, C14-OH, and C18:2-OH levels were significantly higher and C3 and C6-DC levels were lower in SGA infants (p < 0.05). LGA infants had higher C3 and C5:1 levels and lower C18:2 and C16:1-OH levels (p < 0.05). There were positive correlations between free carnitine and phenylalanine, arginine, methionine, alanine, and glycine levels (p < 0.05). Also, a positive correlation between ponderal index and C3, C5-DC, C14, and C14:1 and a negative correlation between ponderal index and ornithine, alanine, glycine, C16:1-OH, and C18:2 were shown. Conclusion: We demonstrated differences in metabolomics possibly reflecting the energy metabolism in newborn infants with intrauterine growth problems in the early postnatal period. These differences might be the footprints of metabolic disturbances in future adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication of congenital heart diseases (CHDs) after cardiac surgery. This study aimed to define the frequency and critical course, risk factors and short-term outcomes of AKI in postoperative CHD neonates. METHODS: Postoperatively followed term CHD newborn infants were enrolled in the study. Infants with congenital anomalies of the urinary tract and other major congenital anomalies were excluded. Neonatal modified KDIGO criteria were used to assess AKI. RESULTS: A total of 199 postoperatively followed newborn infants were included in the study. Acute kidney injury was detected in 71 (35.6%) patients. Of these patients, 24 (33.8%) were in stage 1, 14 (19.7%) in stage 2, and 33 (46.5%) in stage 3. Acute kidney injury occurred within the first week (median 1 day [IQR 1-2 days]) of cardiac surgery in 93% of the patients. The duration of invasive respiratory support and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and mortality were significantly higher in stage 3 patients. Higher vasoactive-inotropic score (OR, 1.02; 95% CI, 1.0-1.04; p = 0.008) and receiving ECMO (OR, 7.9; 95% CI, 2.6-24.4; p = 0.001) were associated with risk for the development of AKI. The mortality rate was 52.1% in the AKI (+) patients, and having AKI (OR 7.1; 95% CI, 3.5-14.18) was significantly associated with mortality. CONCLUSION: Acute kidney injury, a common early complication after critical neonatal CHD cardiac surgery, is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Stage 3 AKI is associated with significantly higher mortality rates.

This study investigates the impact of an engineered magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) on a crop plant. For this purpose, a sonochemical synthetic approach was utilized in order to dope magnetic elements (Co and Nd) into technologically important iron oxide NPs. After being characterized by using TEM, SEM, and XRD instruments, the MNPs were hydroponically applied to barley plants with varying doses (from 125 to 1000 mg/L) both in germination (4 days) and early growing stages (3 weeks). Physiological responses, as well as expression of photosystem marker genes, were assessed. Compared to the untreated control, MNP treatment enhanced germination rate (~ 31%), tissue growth (8% in roots, 16% in shoots), biomass (~ 21%), and chlorophyll (a, b) (~ 20%), and carotenoids (~ 22%) pigments. In general, plants showed the highest growth enhancement at 125 or 250 mg/L treatment. However, higher doses diminished the growth indices. Compared to the control, the catalase activity was significantly reduced in the leaves (~ 33%, p < 0.005) but stimulated in the roots (~ 46%, p < 0.005). All tested photosystem marker genes (BCA, psbA, and psaA) were overexpressed in MNP-treated leaves than non-treated control. Moreover, the gene expressions were found to be proportionally increased with increasing MNP doses, indicating a positive correlation between MNPs and the photosynthetic machinery, which could contribute to the enhancement of plant growth.

We aimed to investigate the role of hypoxia-ischemia in the pathophysiology of early NEC/NEC like disease (ENEC) and classic NEC/NEC like disease (CNEC) in preterm infants. In this pilot study, preterm infants who developed the clinical symptoms and signs of NEC/NEC like disease were divided into two groups as early (≤ 7 days, ENEC) or late (> 7 days, CNEC) groups. Beside clinical variables, serum L-lactate, endothelin-1 (ET-1), platelet activating factor (PAF), and intestinal fatty acid binding protein (I-FABP) levels were measured from umbilical/peripheric venous blood in the first hour of life and during the clinical presentation in all groups. A total of 86 preterm infants were enrolled in the study. In the ENEC group, the incidences of fetal umbilical artery Doppler velocimetry abnormalities, IUGR, and delayed passage of first meconium were higher. In addition, mean levels of L-lactate, ET-1, PAF, and I-FABP were higher in the first hour of life.Conclusion: Our study firstly showed that the dominant pathophysiological factor of ENEC is prenatal hypoxic-ischemic event where intestinal injury and inflammation begin in-utero and become clinically apparent in the first week of life. Therefore, we propose a new term "Hypoxic-Ischemic Enterocolitis (HIEnt)" for the definition of ENEC in preterm infants with prenatal hemodynamic disturbances and IUGR. In this study, calcium and magnesium substituted strontium nano-hexaferrites (Sr0.96Mg0.02Ca0.02Fe12O19, SrMgCa nano-HF) were synthesized by the sol-gel auto-combustion method and their impact on the nutrient uptake, magnetic character and physiology of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), a crop plant, was investigated. Structural, microstructural, and magnetic properties of nano-HF were evaluated by using vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) along with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) and elemental mapping techniques. Plants were hydroponically exposed to nano-HF (ranging from 125 to 1000 mg/L) for three weeks. Results showed that the SrMgCa nano-HF application enhanced germination rate (about 20%), tissue growth (about 38%), biomass (about 20%), soluble protein content (about 41%), and chlorophyll pigments (about 33-42%) when compared to the untreated control. In general, the plants showed the highest growth achievement at 125 or 250 mg/L of nano-HF treatment. However, higher doses diminished the growth parameters. Element concentrations and magnetic behavior analyses of plant parts proved that SrMgCa nano-HF with a size of 42.4 nm are up-taken by the plant roots and lead to increase in iron, calcium, magnesium, and strontium contents of leaves, which were about 20, 18, 3, and 60 times higher in 500 mg/L nano-HF-treated leaves than those of control, respectively. Overall, this study shows for the first time that the four elements have been internalized into the plant body through the application of substituted nano-HF. These findings suggest that mineral-substituted nanoparticles can be incorporated into plant breeding programs for the i) enhancement of seed germination and ii) treatment of plants by fighting with mineral deficiencies.

Cancer-related mortality is a leading cause of death among both men and women around the world. Target-specific therapeutic drugs, early diagnosis, and treatment are crucial to reducing the mortality rate. One of the recent trends in modern medicine is "Theranostics," a combination of therapeutics and diagnosis. Extensive interest in magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) has been increasing due to their biocompatibility, superparamagnetism, less-toxicity, enhanced programmed cell death, and auto-phagocytosis on cancer cells. MNPs act as a multifunctional, noninvasive, ligand conjugated nano-imaging vehicle in targeted drug delivery and diagnosis. In this review, we primarily discuss the significance of the crystal structure, magnetic properties, and the most common method for synthesis of the smaller sized MNPs and their limitations. Next, the recent applications of MNPs in cancer therapy and theranostics are discussed, with certain preclinical and clinical experiments. The focus is on implementation and understanding of the mechanism of action of MNPs in cancer therapy through passive and active targeting drug delivery (magnetic drug targeting and targeting ligand conjugated MNPs). In addition, the theranostic application of MNPs with a dual and multimodal imaging system for early diagnosis and treatment of various cancer types including breast, cervical, glioblastoma, and lung cancer is reviewed. In the near future, the theranostic potential of MNPs with multimodality imaging techniques may enhance the acuity of personalized medicine in the diagnosis and treatment of individual patients.

This study investigates the effect of SPIONs (superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles, ∼12.5 nm in size) on summer squash plant (Cucurbita pepo) in the presence and absence of supplementary iron (Fe(II)-EDTA). The plants were grown in nutrient solution with different iron sources: (i) Fe(II)-EDTA, (ii) without Fe(II)-EDTA (iii) SPIONs only, and (iv) Fe(II)-EDTA with SPIONs. Plant growth and development were assessed after 20 days of soaking by measuring phenological parameters such as plant biomass, chlorophyll content, amount of carotenoids, and the catalase enzyme activity. Transmission electron microscopy, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and vibrating sample magnetometer methods were used to detect uptake and translocation of SPIONs in plant tissues. Our results showed that SPIONs treatment (without Fe(II)-EDTA) caused growth retardation and decreased the plant biomass and chlorophyll content. Hence, they are not efficient sources to compensate for iron demand of squash plant. Electron microscopy observations, magnetization and elemental analyses revealed that SPIONs are taken-up by plant roots but not translocate to upper organs. In roots, SPIONs use a symplastic route for intercellular transfer. These findings suggest that as an iron source, SPIONs alone are not efficient for plant growth, but can contribute it together with Fe(II)-EDTA.

The incidences of maternal obesity and obesity-related maternal, fetal and neonatal complications have increased considerably. Obese people may have lower, normal or increased fat mass independent from their body mass index. We aimed to investigate the relationships between antenatal steroid therapy and maternal body fat ratio for the risk of Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in preterm infants. Pregnant women and their newborn infants between 24-34 weeks of gestation, who received a full course of antenatal steroid therapy were included in the study. Mother`s body weight, body mass index (BMI), and body compositions (muscle, fat, water) were calculated using the bioelectrical impedance method 5 days after giving birth. Neonatal characteristics and respiratory outcomes were noted. A total of 42 mothers and their single premature infants were included in the study. Nineteen (45.2%) infants developed RDS (Group 1) while 23 (54.8%) infants did not develop RDS (Group 2). The mean body fat mass (kg), fat ratio (%), truncal fat mass (kg), and truncal fat ratio (%) were statistically significantly higher in Group 1 than in Group 2. The incidence of RDS was significantly higher in the group of mothers with a body fat ratio > 30.0% (n=15/24, 62.5%) when compared with the group of mothers with a body fat ratio ≤ 30% (n=4/18, 22.2%) (p=0.013). Maternal adipose tissue plays an important role and should be taken into consideration especially in obese women, before giving antenatal steroids to achieve positive effects of the therapy in preterm infants.
