RESUMEN

The study covered 534 cases of work-related injuries of upper extremities among workers of the Szczecin Shipyard, registered during the years 1989-93. Some factors influencing the rate and structure of accidents (age, kind of work, section of the plant, occupational exposure and work experience) were analysed. The study showed that hand injuries were the most common effect of work-related accidents involving upper extremities among males employed in the shipyard.

RESUMEN

Stainless steel welders are not potential occupational risk of geno- and cytotoxic exposure to chemical mutagens and carcinogens contained in welding fumes. The studies of biological activity of welding fumes evidence their cytotoxicity which depends on chromium and nickel content. In 20 stainless steel welders exposed to chromium and nickel contained in welding fumes, kinetics of cell division was assessed in the culture of peripheral blood lymphocytes. No significant differences were found in the cell division rates between the group of exposed welders and the controls. In welders who smoke, the number of cells present after 70 hrs in the third mitotic division, was reduced in comparison to smokers in the control group what may be considered as a symptom of cytotoxic effect of a combined exposure to welding fumes and tobacco smoke.

RESUMEN

In order to detect the genotoxic effects of nickel (Ni) and chromium (Cr) contained in welding fumes on humans, sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs) frequency in lymphocytes was determined in the blood samples derived from 39 stainless steel welders and compared with the data obtained from 22 sex and age matched unexposed controls. The frequency of SCEs was higher in the welders than in the controls. Smoking proved to be a significant, positive predictor for SCE frequency in the controls but not in the welders. Significant correlation between SCE and chromium concentrations in urine of smoking welders was found. A possible synergism between chromium exposure and smoking is discussed. Neither age and urine nickel concentrations nor duration of exposure was a significant predictor for SCE frequency.

RESUMEN

In a five-year follow-up study (1989-93), 1317 work-related accidents and their relation to occupational exposure among male workers employed at the Szczecin Shipyard were analysed. The highest rates of accidents were found among welders, fitters, electrical mechanics and platers. The role of the age, duration of employment, type of the job performed and its contribution to the rate and pattern of accidents, were also investigated.

RESUMEN

Imprint preparations were taken by Eifinger's method from the labial surfaces of upper incisors from 65 workers working at least since 10 years at the production of phosphate fertilizers, and from 33 subjects without occupational exposure to any industrial harmful agents, at least in the last 10 years. Differences were noted in the dental imprints in subjects exposed to fluorides in relation to controls in microscopic examinations.

RESUMEN

Presented are the results of examination of 75 men, workers of the Chemical Works in Police, in whom in the scheme of complex clinical examinations detailed ophthalmological examinations have been carried out. The period of a professional contact with fluor amounted 6-15 years. The examined persons showed a variety of changes; the most important were opacities of the lens capsule, attenuation of the retinal arteries and a pathological record of the ERG.

RESUMEN

62 men producing artificial fibres were administered for 2 years an artichoke extract as a preparation called Cynarex, produced by the Herbs Plant, Herbapol" in Wroclaw. The spontaneous and ADP-induced platelets aggregation was examined by the method of Holdrinet et al. The platelets ability to aggregate, whether spontaneously or by induction was found to be statistically significantly reduced. The spontaneous aggregation after two years of Cynarex administration was reduced on average by 51%.

RESUMEN

The literature data indicating nonspecific pathologic symptoms of the circulatory system in those occupationally exposed to caprolactam and diphenyl inspired the authors to evaluate the circulatory system in a group of 495 workers of a Chemical Plant producing polyamide fibres. The anamnestic data, family inquiry and subjective changes indicate that any hints of the significant effects of the technological process on circulatory diseases in this professional group are unwarranted. The percentage values of the latent circulatory failure (1-2% of subjects), coronary insufficiency (6.6% of subjects), arterial hypertension (5.7% of subjects) did not show any significant differences, as compared to the control group and normal Polish population. The obtained results of ECG test evaluated according to the Minnesota-Code criterion did not significantly differ from 100 controls composed of those in whom no changes in the circulatory system were found, whereas clear differences were found related to 50 persons with documented heart ischemia.

RESUMEN

In 48 men occupationally exposed to CS2 the following glycoproteins were estimated in blood serum, using radial immunodiffusion on M-Partigen plates: alpha1-acid glycoprotein, alpha1-antitrypsin, alpha2-HS-glycoprotein, alpha2-macroglobulin, Gc glycoprotein, hemopexin, haptoglobin, ceruluplasmin and beta2-glycoprotein I. The studies indicated a highly statistically significant increase of: alpha1-acid--glycoprotein and Gc glycoprotein, and decrease of: alpha1-antitrypsins, alpha2-HS--glycoprotein and beta2-glycoprotein. The level of the remaining glycoproteins was normal.

RESUMEN

The study included controls and those exposed to fluorine compounds. In the exposed group a highly statistically significant increase in calcium concentration was found, as compared to the control group. On the other hand, the level of magnesium was the same in both groups.

RESUMEN

The effect of lipiodol injected into the pulmonary artery on blood pressure in pulmonary artery and thoracic aorta in dogs. Acta Physiol. Pol. 1977, 28 (2): 143--151. The purpose of the experiments, carried out on 10 anaesthetized dogs, was to trace changes in pressure in aorta and pulmonary artery within 2 hours after injection of lipiodol Ultra-Fluide into the pulmonary artery of dogs. In individual experiments a gradual fall, rise or maintenance of normal pressure was found in the aorta. Pressure changes in the pulmonary artery were similar. Statistical analysis failed to demonstrate any significant correlation between the pressure in the aorta or in the pulmonary artery and the time of measurements of these pressures during the two-hour experiment.
