RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To determine the clinical and analytical accuracy of a new veterinary-calibrated portable blood glucose monitor (PBGM) compared to a reference laboratory analyzer. ANIMALS: Client-owned dogs (n = 77) and cats (n = 64). METHODS: Peripheral and paired capillary whole-blood glucose concentrations measured via PBGM were compared to plasma glucose concentrations measured via a Cobas c501 reference analyzer (Roche). Analytical accuracy was evaluated with the Spearman rank correlation coefficient, Bland-Altman difference plot analysis, and Deming regression. Clinical accuracy was evaluated with Parkes error grid analysis. Paired peripheral and capillary blood samples were compared with the Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-rank test. RESULTS: There was a high correlation between PBGM and reference analyzer readings in dogs and cats. Human quality assurance standards (International Organization for Standardization 15197:2013 guidelines) for analytical accuracy were met for 95% of feline peripheral blood samples and 89% of canine samples. Similar veterinary standards (American Society of Veterinary Clinical Pathology guidelines) were met for 89% of canine and 92% of feline peripheral blood glucose measurements. Error grid analysis showed that all peripheral canine and 97% of feline measurements were clinically accurate (zone A). Any altered clinical decision for the remaining feline measurements was expected to minimally impact outcome (zone B). No significant difference was found between peripheral and capillary blood glucose measurements in either species. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The PBGM produced clinically accurate results and is suitable for use in veterinary and home settings to measure blood glucose.

The spectroscopic properties of Eu3+-doped Bi12SiO20 (BSO) were investigated and compared with that of Eu3+-doped Bi12GeO20 (BGO). The emission properties and the absorption spectra have been measured at 10 K as well as at 300 K (room temperature). Luminescence was detected due to the direct excitation of the 5D0 level of Eu3+, as well as through the excitation of the 5D1 level. The Judd-Ofelt theoretical framework was used to compute the radiative lifetimes (τ) and the omega parameters (Ωλ). The electric dipole transition probabilities, asymmetry ratios (R), along with the branching ratios (ß) were also determined based on the obtained experimental data. The strongest detected luminescence belongs to the 5D0 → 7F0 transition observed at 578 nm, similar to the BGO sillenite. Reasons for the major presence of the 5D0 → 7F0 emission, theoretically forbidden by the Judd-Ofelt Theory, were investigated and compared with that of the BGO sillenite. Obtained results showed that the strong 5D0 → 7F0 line is also present in Eu:BSO, indicating that this is a feature of the entire sillenite family and not just Eu:BGO.

Most special vehicles on public roads and off-road are equipped with various suspension systems. The suspensions used in trucks are designed to absorb the energy that results from overcoming uneven ground. These suspensions are divided into dependent and independent ones. Knowledge of the loads that occur while driving a vehicle, mainly off-road, is critical from the point of view of the adhesion and fatigue life of the suspension system. In the case of four-axle cars with 2 + 2 axles, in which the first two axles are equipped with a dependent suspension based on leaf springs, only one axle may carry the load. This paper attempts to analyze the results of experimental tests carried out on a vehicle in the conditions of roads with an unstable surface such as dirt roads, gravel roads, and roadless tracks. An analysis of fatigue life estimation is presented using equivalent stress values. It was also determined how the use of front axles load equalizing elements in the tested car influences their fatigue life.

RESUMEN

In this paper, we present a time domain method for extracting coefficients of nonlinear Volterra-series kernels for white light-emitting diodes (LED) used both for illumination and visible light communications. We show that this method may have several advantages over the thus far more popular frequency domain method. We successfully apply the measured kernel coefficients up to the 3rd order for the modeling of nonlinear distortion impact on advanced modulation formats: pulse amplitude modulation, carrierless amplitude phase and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing. The impact of blue filtering on dynamic nonlinearity is also presented.

RESUMEN

The addition of an N-heterocyclic carbene to the carbonyl group of an α,ß,γ,δ-unsaturated enol ester affords a hemiacetal azolium intermediate that enables a cascade olefin isomerization/Diels-Alder reaction, for which mechanistic studies implicate Lewis base catalysis. Preliminary studies into the utility of the products have been undertaken with reductive and oxidative cleavage, giving materials for potential use in complex-target synthesis.

Iodobenzene-catalyzed 1,2-olefin functionalization via C-C and C-O bond formation has been achieved with electron rich aromatic groups and vinylogous esters acting as independent nucleophiles. The reaction provides oxabicyclo[3.2.1]octanes and [4.2.1]nonanes from commercially available 3-alkoxy cycohexen-2-ones in three steps.

RESUMEN

Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are extremely useful in treating a wide range of diseases and have a variety of useful research applications. However, the routinely generated low in vitro concentrations of HSCs from current bioreactor manufacturing systems has been a hindrance to the full-scale application of these essential cellular materials. This has made the search for novel bioreactor systems for high-concentration HSC production a major research endeavour. This review addresses process challenges in relation to bioreactor development and optimisation for high-density HSC production under effective monitoring of essential culture parameters, such as pH, dissolved oxygen and nutrient uptake. It discusses different process strategies and bioreactor configurations for HSCs production from a commercial viability perspective, and also discusses recent advances in the field.
