Comparative studies reliant on single personality surveys to rate wild primates are scarce yet remain critical for developing a holistic comparative understanding of personality. Differences in survey design, item exclusion, and factor selection impede cross-study comparisons. To address these challenges, we used consistently collected data to assess personality trait structures in wild rhesus (Macaca mulatta), bonnet (M. radiata), and long-tailed (M. fascicularis) macaques that varied in their degree of phylogenetic closeness, species-typical social styles, and anthropogenic exposure in urban or urban-rural environments. We administered 51-item personality surveys to familiar raters, and, after reliability and structure screenings, isolated 4-5 factor solutions among the species. Four consistent factors emerged: Confident, Sociable, Active, and Irritable/Equable. This latter factor had differential expression across species. Item composition of the Irritable/Equable factor was consistent with their anticipated differences in social styles, but confounded by cross-site anthropogenic variation. We also administered a 43-item survey confined to human-primate situations which paralleled our findings of social style variation, while also exhibiting variation that aligned with population differences in human density. Our findings indicate that macaque personality trait structures may be emergent outcomes of evolutionary and/or socioecological processes, but further research is needed to parse these processes' relative contributions.

Introduction: Environmental conditions play a prime role in the growth and development of plant species, exerting a significant influence on their reproductive capacity. Soybean is sensitive to high temperatures during flowering and seed developmental stages. Little is known about the combined environmental effect of temperature and CO2 on seed yield and quality and its future generation. Methods: A study was conducted to examine the effect of temperature (22/14°C (low), 30/22°C (optimum), and 38/30°C (high)), and CO2 (420 ppm (ambient; aCO2) and 720 ppm (elevated; eCO2)) on seed yield, quality, and transgenerational seedling vigor traits of soybean cultivars (DS25-1 and DS31-243) using Soil-Plant-Atmospheric-Research facility. Results: A significant temperature effect was recorded among yield and quality attributes. At high-temperature, the 100-seed weights of DS25-1 and DS31-243 declined by 40% and 24%, respectively, over the optimum temperature at aCO2. The harvest index of varieties reduced by 70% when exposed to high temperature under both aCO2 and eCO2, compared to the optimum temperature at aCO2. The seed oil (- 2%) and protein (8%) content altered when developed under high temperature under aCO2. Maximum sucrose (7.5%) and stachyose (3.8%) accumulation in seeds were observed when developed under low temperatures and eCO2. When the growing temperature increased from optimum to high, the seed oleic acids increased (63%), while linoleic and linolenic acids decreased (- 28% and - 43%, respectively). Significant temperature and CO2 effects were observed in progenies with the highest maximum seedling emergence (80%), lesser time to 50% emergence (5.5 days), and higher seedling vigor from parents grown at low-temperature treatment under eCO2. Discussion: Exposure of plants to 38/30°C was detrimental to soybean seed yield, and eCO2 levels did not compensate for this yield loss. The high temperature during seed developmental stages altered the chemical composition of the seed, leading to an increased content of monounsaturated fatty acids. The findings suggest that parental stress can significantly impact the development of offspring, indicating that epigenetic regulation or memory repose may be at play.

Understanding how internal states like satiety are connected to animal behavior is a fundamental question in neuroscience. Hydra vulgaris, a freshwater cnidarian with only twelve neuronal cell types, serves as a tractable model system for studying state-dependent behaviors. We find that starved Hydra consistently move towards light, while fed Hydra do not. By modeling this behavior as a set of three sequences of head orientation, jump distance, and jump rate, we demonstrate that the satiety state only affects the rate of the animal jumping to a new position, while the orientation and jump distance are unaffected. These findings yield insights into how internal states in a simple organism, Hydra, affect specific elements of a behavior, and offer general principles for studying the relationship between state-dependent behaviors and their underlying molecular mechanisms.

Nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) can form diverse secondary structures ranging from hairpins to duplex, triplex, G4-tetraplex and C4-i-motifs. Many of the DNA analogues designed as antisense oligonucleotides (ASO) are also adept at embracing such folded structures, although to different extents with altered stabilities. One such analogue, peptide nucleic acid (PNA), which is uncharged and achiral, forms hybrids with complementary DNA/RNA with greater stability and specificity than DNA:DNA/RNA hybrids. Like DNAs, these single-stranded PNAs can form PNA:DNA/RNA duplexes, PNA:DNA:PNA triplexes, PNA-G4 tetraplexes and PNA-C4-i-motifs. We have recently designed Janus-like bimodal PNAs endowed with two different nucleobase sequences on either side of a single aminoethylglycyl (aeg) PNA backbone and shown that these can simultaneously bind to two complementary DNA sequences from both faces of PNA. This leads to the formation of supramolecular polyplexes such as double duplexes, triple duplexes and triplexes of double duplexes with appropriate complementary DNA/RNA. Herein, we demonstrate that Janus/bimodal PNA with a poly G-sequence on the triazole side of the PNA backbone and mixed bases on the t-amide side, templates the initial formation of a (PNA-G5)4 tetraplex (triazole side), followed by the formation of a PNA:DNA duplex (t-amide side). Such a polyplex shows synergistic overall stabilisation compared to the isolated duplexes/quadruplex. The assembly of polyplexes with a shared backbone for duplexes and tetraplexes is programmable and may have potential applications in the self-assembly of nucleic acid nano- and origami structures. It is also shown that Janus PNAs enter the cells better than the standard aeg-PNA oligomers, and hence have implications for in vivo applications as well.

In animal social groups, the extent to which individuals consistently win agonistic interactions and their ability to monopolize resources represent 2 core aspects of their competitive regime. However, whether these two aspects are closely correlated within groups has rarely been studied. Here, we tested the hypothesis that hierarchy steepness, which is generally used to represent power differentials between group members, predicts the variation in the distribution of fitness-related benefits (i.e. fecundity, infant survival, mating success, and feeding success) in relation to individual dominance ranks. We tested this hypothesis in primate groups using comparative phylogenetic meta-analytical techniques. Specifically, we reviewed published and unpublished studies to extract data on individual dominance ranks, their access to fitness-related benefits, and hierarchy steepness. We collected and included in our analysis a total of 153 data points, representing 27 species (including 2 chimpanzee sub-species). From these, we used 4 common methods to measure individual dominance ranks and hierarchy steepness, i.e. D ij -based normalized David's scores, randomized Elo-ratings, and David's scores and Elo-ratings estimated in Bayesian frameworks. We found that hierarchy steepness had no effect on the strength of the relationship between dominance rank and access to fitness-related benefits. Our results suggest that hierarchy steepness does not reflect between-group variation in the extent to which individual dominance affects the acquisition of fitness-related benefits in primates. Although the ability to win agonistic encounters is essential, we speculate that other behavioral strategies adopted by individuals may play crucial roles in resource acquisition in animal competitive regimes.

Peptide nucleic acids (PNAs) are charge-neutral synthetic DNA/RNA analogues. In many aspects of biology and biotechnology, the details of DNA and PNA melting reaction coordinates are crucial, and their associative/dissociative details remain inadequately understood. In the current study, we have attempted to gain insights into comparative melting pathways and binding affinity of iso-sequences of an 18-mer PNA-DNA-PNA triplex and the analogous DNA-DNA-DNA triplex, and DNA-DNA and PNA-DNA duplexes. It is intriguing that while the DNA-DNA-DNA triplex melts in two sequential steps, the PNA-DNA-PNA triplex melts in a single step and the mechanistic aspects for this difference are still not clear. We report an all-atom molecular dynamics simulation of both complexes in the temperature range of 300 to 500 K with 20 K intervals. Based on the trajectory analysis, we provide evidence that the association and dissociation are dictated by the differences in fraying-peeling effects from either terminus to the center in a zipper pattern among the PNA-DNA-PNA triplex and DNA-DNA-DNA triplexes. These are shown to be governed by the different characteristics of H-bonding, RMSD, and Free Energy Landscape (FEL) as analyzed by PCA, leading to the DNA-DNA-DNA triplex exhibiting sequential melting, while the PNA-DNA-PNA triplex shows cooperative melting of the whole fragment in a single-step. The PNA-DNA-PNA triplex base pairs are thermodynamically more stable than the DNA-DNA-DNA triplex, with the binding affinity of PNA-TFO to the PNA : DNA duplex being higher than that of DNA-TFO to the DNA : DNA duplex. The investigation of the association/dissociation of PNA-TFO to the PNA-DNA duplex has relevance and importance in the emerging effective applications of oligonucleotide therapy.

Introduction: The longevity of an endodontically treated tooth depends on fracture resistance by preserving more remaining dentin thickness. The aim of this study is to determine which file system preserves more remaining dentin thickness. Materials and Methods: Protaper universal, M-two, Protaper Next, Trunatomy, I-Race and mandibular first premolar. The removed dentin thickness during instrumentation of each file system was noted by taking the difference of RDT of pre-instrumentation and post-instrumentation with the aid of CBCT. Results and Discussion: TRN [Group-4] shows the least aggressive cutting with maximal preservation of remaining dentin thickness at 3 mm and 6 mm from the apex at both mesiodistal and buccolingual dimensions. M-two [Group-2] shows maximum removed dentin thickness at 3 mm from the apex both mesiodistal dimension and buccolingual dimension. PTU [Group-1] shows maximum removed dentin thickness at 6 mm from the apex at mesiodistal dimension. M-two [Group-2] shows maximum removed dentin thickness at 6 mm from the apex at the buccolingual dimension. Conclusion: In this study, it is concluded that the Trunatomy file system preserves more remaining dentin thickness both mesiodistally and buccolingually both 3 mm and 6 mm from the apex.

Women with high mammographic density have an increased risk of breast cancer. They may be offered contrast-enhanced mammography to improve breast cancer screening performance. Using a cohort of women receiving contrast-enhanced mammography, we evaluated whether conventional and modified mammographic density measures were associated with breast cancer. Sixty-six patients with newly diagnosed unilateral breast cancer were frequency matched on the basis of age to 133 cancer-free control individuals. On low-energy craniocaudal contrast-enhanced mammograms (equivalent to standard mammograms), we measured quantitative mammographic density using CUMULUS software at the conventional intensity threshold ("Cumulus") and higher-than-conventional thresholds ("Altocumulus," "Cirrocumulus"). The measures were standardized to enable estimation of odds ratio per adjusted standard deviation (OPERA). In multivariable logistic regression of case-control status, only the highest-intensity measure (Cirrocumulus) was statistically significantly associated with breast cancer (OPERA = 1.40, 95% confidence interval = 1.04 to 1.89). Conventional Cumulus did not contribute to model fit. For women receiving contrast-enhanced mammography, Cirrocumulus mammographic density may better predict breast cancer than conventional quantitative mammographic density.

Background: With the capability to render prediagnoses, consumer wearables have the potential to affect subsequent diagnoses and the level of care in the health care delivery setting. Despite this, postmarket surveillance of consumer wearables has been hindered by the lack of codified terms in electronic health records (EHRs) to capture wearable use. Objective: We sought to develop a weak supervision-based approach to demonstrate the feasibility and efficacy of EHR-based postmarket surveillance on consumer wearables that render atrial fibrillation (AF) prediagnoses. Methods: We applied data programming, where labeling heuristics are expressed as code-based labeling functions, to detect incidents of AF prediagnoses. A labeler model was then derived from the predictions of the labeling functions using the Snorkel framework. The labeler model was applied to clinical notes to probabilistically label them, and the labeled notes were then used as a training set to fine-tune a classifier called Clinical-Longformer. The resulting classifier identified patients with an AF prediagnosis. A retrospective cohort study was conducted, where the baseline characteristics and subsequent care patterns of patients identified by the classifier were compared against those who did not receive a prediagnosis. Results: The labeler model derived from the labeling functions showed high accuracy (0.92; F1-score=0.77) on the training set. The classifier trained on the probabilistically labeled notes accurately identified patients with an AF prediagnosis (0.95; F1-score=0.83). The cohort study conducted using the constructed system carried enough statistical power to verify the key findings of the Apple Heart Study, which enrolled a much larger number of participants, where patients who received a prediagnosis tended to be older, male, and White with higher CHA2DS2-VASc (congestive heart failure, hypertension, age ≥75 years, diabetes, stroke, vascular disease, age 65-74 years, sex category) scores (P<.001). We also made a novel discovery that patients with a prediagnosis were more likely to use anticoagulants (525/1037, 50.63% vs 5936/16,560, 35.85%) and have an eventual AF diagnosis (305/1037, 29.41% vs 262/16,560, 1.58%). At the index diagnosis, the existence of a prediagnosis did not distinguish patients based on clinical characteristics, but did correlate with anticoagulant prescription (P=.004 for apixaban and P=.01 for rivaroxaban). Conclusions: Our work establishes the feasibility and efficacy of an EHR-based surveillance system for consumer wearables that render AF prediagnoses. Further work is necessary to generalize these findings for patient populations at other sites.

Sequestration of small molecule guests in the cavity of a water-soluble deep cavitand host has a variety of effects on their NMR properties. The effects of encapsulation on the longitudinal (T1) and transverse (T2) relaxation times of the protons in variably sized guest molecules are analyzed here, using inversion recovery and spin-echo experiments. Sequestration of neutral organic species from the bulk solvent reduces the overall proton relaxation times, but the magnitude of this effect on different protons in the same molecule has a variety of contributors, from the motion of the guest when bound, to the position of the protons in the cavity and the magnetic anisotropy induced by the aromatic walls of the host. These subtle effects can have large consequences on the environment experienced by the bound guest, and this sheds light on the nature of small molecules in enclosed environments.

The liver is a common site for the development of metastases in colorectal cancer. Treatment selection for patients with colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) is difficult; although hepatic resection will cure a minority of CRLM patients, recurrence is common. Reliable preoperative prediction of recurrence could therefore be a valuable tool for physicians in selecting the best candidates for hepatic resection in the treatment of CRLM. It has been hypothesized that evidence for recurrence could be found via quantitative image analysis on preoperative CT imaging of the future liver remnant before resection. To investigate this hypothesis, we have collected preoperative hepatic CT scans, clinicopathologic data, and recurrence/survival data, from a large, single-institution series of patients (n = 197) who underwent hepatic resection of CRLM. For each patient, we also created segmentations of the liver, vessels, tumors, and future liver remnant. The largest of its kind, this dataset is a resource that may aid in the development of quantitative imaging biomarkers and machine learning models for the prediction of post-resection hepatic recurrence of CRLM.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease, which requires optimal glycemic control to prevent its ensuing vascular complications. Pathway to optimal glycemic control in T2DM has a complex socio-behavioral construct, especially in vulnerable populations, like slum dwellers, who have reduced health-care access and lower prioritization of health needs. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to map trajectories of glycemic control amongst individuals with T2DM living in urban slums and identify key determinants associated with unfavourable glycaemic trajectory. METHODS: This study was a community-based longitudinal study conducted in an urban slum of Bhopal in Central India. Adult patients diagnosed with T2DM and on treatment for more than one year were included. All 326 eligible participants underwent a baseline interview, which captured sociodemographic, personal behavior, medication adherence, morbidity profile, treatment modality, anthropometric and biochemical measurements (HbA1c). Another 6-month follow-up interview was conducted to record anthropometric measurements, HbA1c and treatment modality. Four mixed effect logistic regression models (through theory-driven variable selections) were created with glycemic status as dependent variable and usage of insulin was considered as random effect. RESULTS: A total of 231 (70.9%) individuals had unfavorable glycemic control trajectory (UGCT), and only 95 (29.1%) had a favorable trajectory. Individuals with UGCT were more likely to be women, with lower educational status, non-vegetarian food preference, consumed tobacco, had poor drug adherence, and were on insulin. The most parsimonious model identified female gender (2.44,1.33-4.37), tobacco use (3.80,1.92 to 7.54), and non-vegetarian food preference (2.29,1.27 to 4.13) to be associated with UGCT. Individuals with good medication adherence (0.35,0.13 to 0.95) and higher education status (0.37,0.16 to 0.86) were found to be protective in nature. CONCLUSION: Unfavorable glycemic control trajectory seems to be an inescapable consequence in vulnerable settings. The identified predictors through this longitudinal study may offer a cue for recognizing a rational response at societal level and adopting strategy formulation thereof.

Social network analysis (SNA) is a powerful, quantitative tool to measure animals' direct and indirect social connectedness in the context of social groups. However, the extent to which behavioural sampling methods influence SNA metrics remains unclear. To fill this gap, here we compare network indices of grooming, huddling, and aggression calculated from data collected from three macaque species through two sampling methods: focal animal sampling (FAS) and all-occurrences behaviour sampling (ABS). We found that measures of direct connectedness (degree centrality, and network density) were correlated between FAS and ABS for all social behaviours. Eigenvector and betweenness centralities were correlated for grooming and aggression networks across all species. By contrast, for huddling, we found a correlation only for betweenness centrality while eigenvector centralities were correlated only for the tolerant bonnet macaque but not so for the despotic rhesus macaque. Grooming and huddling network modularity and centralization were correlated between FAS and ABS for all but three of the eight groups. By contrast, for aggression network, we found a correlation for network centralization but not modularity between the sampling methodologies. We discuss how our findings provide researchers with new guidelines regarding choosing the appropriate sampling method to estimate social network metrics.

Corn seedling emergence is a critical factor affecting crop yields. Accurately predicting emergence is crucial for precise crop growth and development simulation in process-based crop models. While various experimental studies have investigated the relationship between corn seedling emergence and temperature, there remains a scarcity of studies focused on newer corn hybrids. In the present study, statistical models (linear and quadratic functional relationships) are developed based on the seedling emergence of ten current corn hybrids, considering soil and air temperatures as influencing factors. The data used for model development are obtained from controlled soil plant atmospheric research chamber experiments focused on corn seedling emergence at five different temperatures. Upon evaluating the developed models, the quadratic model relating the air temperature with time to emergence was found more accurate for all corn hybrids (coefficient of determination (R2): 0.97, root mean square error (RMSE): 0.42 day) followed by the quadratic model based on soil temperature (R2: 0.96, RMSE: 1.42 days), linear model based on air (R2: 0.94, RMSE: 0.53 day) and soil temperature (R2: 0.94, RMSE: 0.70 day). A growing degree day (GDD)-based model was also developed for the newer hybrids. When comparing the developed GDD-based model with the existing GDD models (based on old hybrids), it was observed that the GDD required for emergence was 16% higher than the GDD used in the current models. This showed that the existing GDD-based models need to be revisited when adopted for newer hybrids and adapted to corn crop simulation models. The developed seedling emergence model, integrated into a process-based corn crop simulation model, can benefit farmers and researchers in corn crop management. It can aid in optimizing planting schedules, supporting management decisions, and predicting corn crop growth, development, and it yields more accurately.

Climate change poses a significant threat to agriculture. However, climatic trends and their impact on Mississippi (MS) maize (Zea mays L.) are unknown. The objectives were to: (i) analyze trends in climatic variables (1970 to 2020) using Mann-Kendall and Sen slope method, (ii) quantify the impact of climate change on maize yield in short and long run using the auto-regressive distributive lag (ARDL) model, and (iii) categorize the critical months for maize-climate link using Pearson's correlation matrix. The climatic variables considered were maximum temperature (Tmax), minimum temperature (Tmin), diurnal temperature range (DTR), precipitation (PT), relative humidity (RH), and carbon emissions (CO2). The pre-analysis, post-analysis, and model robustness statistical tests were verified, and all conditions were met. A significant upward trend in Tmax (0.13 °C/decade), Tmin (0.27 °C/decade), and CO2 (5.1 units/decade), and a downward trend in DTR ( - 0.15 °C/decade) were noted. The PT and RH insignificantly increased by 4.32 mm and 0.11% per decade, respectively. The ARDL model explained 76.6% of the total variations in maize yield. Notably, the maize yield had a negative correlation with Tmax for June, and July, with PT in August, and with DTR for June, July, and August, whereas a positive correlation was noted with Tmin in June, July, and August. Overall, a unit change in Tmax reduced the maize yield by 7.39% and 26.33%, and a unit change in PT reduced it by 0.65% and 2.69% in the short and long run, respectively. However, a unit change in Tmin, and CO2 emissions increased maize yield by 20.68% and 0.63% in the long run with no short run effect. Overall, it is imperative to reassess the agronomic management strategies, developing and testing cultivars adaptable to the revealed climatic trend, with ability to withstand severe weather conditions in ensuring sustainable maize production.

BACKGROUND: The enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) program established improved clinical outcomes in elective surgery; however, its role in emergencies is uncertain. This study was designed to assess the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of a tailored-ERAS (t-ERAS) protocol in patients undergoing modified Graham's patch closure for gastro-duodenal perforation. METHODS: A single-centre, prospective, parallel-arm, open-label, randomized controlled trial was conducted from February 2021 to December 2021. Patients with gastroduodenal perforation undergoing modified Graham's patch were randomly assigned to either conventional care or the t-ERAS pathway. Patients with refractory septic shock, psychiatric or neurological disorders, pregnancy, multiple perforations, sealed-off perforations, and perforation sizes greater than 1.5 cm were excluded. The primary outcome was to compare the length of hospitalization (LOH). Functional recovery parameters and morbidity were compared in secondary outcomes. RESULTS: Twenty-five patients each were included in conventional care and the t-ERAS group. In the t-ERAS group, LOH was significantly shorter (6.3 SD2.15 days versus 9.56 SD4.33 days, p = 0.001). Patients in the t-ERAS group had significantly early functional recovery (days) with time to first bowel sound (1.8 SD0.41; p 0.002), first flatus (2.52 SD0.65; p = 0.026), first stool (3.04 SD0.68; p < 0.001), first liquid diet (2.24 SD0.60; p = 0.002), and duration of ileus (2.64 SD0.86; p = 0.038). There was no significant difference in morbidity such as post-operative nausea and vomiting, SSI, or pulmonary complications between the two groups. CONCLUSION: Tailored ERAS pathways are safe and effective in reducing the LOH and promoting early functional recovery in patients undergoing emergency closure of gastro-duodenal perforation.

Studying historical response of crops to weather conditions at a finer scale is essential for devising agricultural strategies tailored to expected climate changes. However, determining the relationship between crop and climate in Mississippi (MS) remains elusive. Therefore, this research attempted to i) estimate climate trends between 1970 and 2020 in MS during the soybean growing season (SGS) using the Mann-Kendall and Sen slope method, ii) calculate the impact of climate change on soybean yield using an auto-regressive distributive lag (ARDL) econometric model, and iii) identify the most critical months from a crop-climate perspective by generating a correlation between the detrended yield and the monthly average for each climatic variable. Specific variables considered were maximum temperature (Tmax), minimum temperature (Tmin), diurnal temperature range (DTR), precipitation (PT), carbon dioxide emissions (CO2), and relative humidity (RH). All required diagnostic-tests i.e., pre-analysis, post-analysis, model-sensitivity, and assessing the models' goodness-of-fit were performed and statistical standards were met. A positive trend in Tmin (+0.25 °C/decade), and a negative trend in DTR (-0.18 °C/decade) was found. Although Tmax, PT, and RH showed non-significant trends, numerical changes were noted as +0.11 °C/decade, +3.03 mm/decade, and -0.06 %/decade, respectively. Furthermore, soybean yield was positively correlated with Tmin (in June and September), PT (in July and August), and RH (in July), but negatively correlated with Tmax (in July and August) and DTR (in June, July, and August). Soybean yield was observed to be significantly reduced by 18.11 % over the long-term and by 5.51 % over the short-term for every 1 °C increase in Tmax. With every unit increase in Tmin and CO2 emissions, the yield of soybeans increased significantly by 7.76 % and 3.04 %, respectively. Altogether, soybeans in MS exhibited variable sensitivity to short- and long-terms climatic changes. The results highlight the importance of testing climate-resilient agronomic practices and cultivars that encompass asymmetric sensitivities in response to climatic conditions of MS.
