RESUMEN

Strawberries are highly consumed around the world; however, the post-harvest shelf life is a market challenge to mitigate. It is necessary to guarantee the taste, color, and nutritional value of the fruit for a prolonged period of time. In this work, a nanocoating based on chitosan and ZnO nanoparticles for the preservation of strawberries was developed and examined. The chitosan was obtained from residual shrimp skeletons using the chemical method, and the ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized by the close-spaced sublimation method. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, electron dispersion analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and infrared spectroscopy were used to characterize the hybrid coating. The spaghetti-like ZnO nanoparticles presented the typical wurtzite structure, which was uniformly distributed into the chitosan matrix, as observed by the elemental mapping. Measurements of color, texture, pH, titratable acidity, humidity content, and microbiological tests were performed for the strawberries coated with the Chitosan/ZnO hybrid coating, which was uniformly impregnated on the strawberries' surface. After eight days of storage, the fruit maintained a fresh appearance. The microbial load was reduced because of the synergistic effect between chitosan and ZnO nanoparticles. Global results confirm that coated strawberries are suitable for human consumption.

RESUMEN

Bioactive compounds can be protected from degradation through encapsulation, increasing their bioavailability and shelf life. Spray drying is an advanced encapsulation technique mainly used for the processing of food-based bioactives. In this study, Box-Behnken design (BBD)-based response surface methodology (RSM) was used to study the effects of combined polysaccharide carrier agents and other spray drying parameters on encapsulating date fruit sugars obtained from a supercritical assisted aqueous extraction. The spray drying parameters were set at various levels: Air inlet temperature (150-170 °C), feed flow rate (3-5 mL/min), and carrier agent concentration (30-50 %). Under the optimized conditions (inlet temperature of 170 °C, the feed flow rate of 3 mL/min, and carrier agent concentration of 44 %), a maximum sugar powder yield of 38.62 % with 3.5 % moisture, 18.2 % hygroscopicity and 91.3 % solubility was obtained. The tapped density and particle density of the dried date sugar were estimated as 0.575 g cm-3 and 1.81 g cm-3, respectively, showing its potential for easy storage. In addition, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed better microstructural stability of the fruit sugar product, which is essential for commercial applications. Thus, the hybrid carrier agent system (maltodextrin and gum arabic) can be considered a potential carrier agent for producing stable date sugar powder with longer shelf-life and desirable characteristics in the food industry.

RESUMEN

Although ultrafiltration is a reliable method for separating oily wastewater, the process is limited by problems of low flux and membrane fouling. In this study, for the first time, commercial TiO2/ZrO2 ceramic membranes modified with silver-functionalized copper oxide (Ag-CuO) nanoparticles are reported for the improved separation performance of emulsified oil. Ag-CuO nanoparticles were synthesized via hydrothermal technique and dip-coated onto commercial membranes at varying concentrations (0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 wt.%). The prepared membranes were further examined to understand the improvements in oil-water separation due to Ag-CuO coating. All modified ceramic membranes exhibited higher hydrophilicity and decreased porosity. Additionally, the permeate flux, oil rejection, and antifouling performance of the Ag-CuO-coated membranes were more significantly improved than the pristine commercial membrane. The 0.5 wt.% modified membrane exhibited a 30% higher water flux (303.63 L m-2 h-1) and better oil rejection efficiency (97.8%) for oil/water separation among the modified membranes. After several separation cycles, the 0.5 wt.% Ag-CuO-modified membranes showed a constant permeate flux with an excellent oil rejection of >95% compared with the unmodified membrane. Moreover, the corrosion resistance of the coated membrane against acid, alkali, actual seawater, and oily wastewater was remarkable. Thus, the Ag-CuO-modified ceramic membranes are promising for oil separation applications due to their high flux, enhanced oil rejection, better antifouling characteristics, and good stability.

RESUMEN

Alternative sweeteners to white sugar with a lower calorie content and glycemic index obtained through date palm fruits is of great interest to the food industry. In this study, ultrasound-assisted extraction of nutritive sugar from date fruit powder was investigated through Box-Behnken design. A maximum total sugar content (TSC) of 812 mg glucose eq./g of DFP was obtained with a sugar extraction yield (SEY) of 81.40 ± 0.27 % under the following optimal extraction conditions: extraction temperature of 60 °C, extraction time of 30 min, and L/S ratio of 7.6 mL/g. Various modern techniques were used to characterize the obtained extracts and associated residues. The results showed that the extract contained fructose, glucose, and sucrose and had good thermal stability. Furthermore, SEM and TSC analysis revealed that ultrasonic treatment of the biomass improved mass transfer diffusion due to acoustic or ultrasonic cavitation, resulting in a higher sugar yield.

RESUMEN

Nanomodification of ultrafiltration (UF) membranes has been shown to be a simple and efficient technique for the preparation of high-performance membranes. In this work, an iron oxide functionalized halloysite nanoclay (Fe-HNC) nanocomposite was prepared and used as a nanofiller for polyethersulfone (PES) membranes. The effect of Fe-HNC concentration on the filtration performance of the membrane was investigated by varying the nanocomposite dosage (0-0.5 wt %) in the casting dope. Various characterization studies showed that the incorporation of Fe-HNC nanocomposites improved the membrane morphology and enhanced the surface properties, thermal stability, mechanical strength, hydrophilicity, and porosity. The permeability to pure water and filtration of humic acid (HA) were significantly improved by incorporating Fe-HNC into the PES membranes. The membrane with Fe-HNC loading of 0.1 wt % exhibited the highest pure water permeability (174.3 L/(m2 h bar)) and removal of HA (90.1 %), which were 1.8 times and 29 % higher, respectively than the pristine PES membrane. Moreover, fouling studies showed the enhanced antifouling ability of the Fe-HNC nanocomposites modified PES membranes, especially against irreversible fouling. Continuous membrane regeneration-based fouling removal studies from HA showed that the PES/0.1 wt % Fe-HNC membrane exhibited a high fouling recovery of 70.4 % with very low reversible and irreversible fouling resistance of 9.61 % and 14.78 %, respectively, compared to the pristine PES membrane (fouling recovery: 40.4 %; reversible fouling: 21.7 %; irreversible fouling: 20.1 %). Overall, the Fe-HNC nanocomposite proved to be an effective nanomodifier for improving the permeability of PES membranes and the antifouling ability to treat HA polluted aqueous streams.

RESUMEN

In recent years, bimetallic oxide nanoparticles have garnered significant attention owing to their salient advantages over monometallic nanoparticles. In this study, Fe2O3-Mn2O3 nanoparticles were synthesized and used as nanomodifiers for polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration membranes. A NIPS was used to fabricate asymmetric membranes. The effect of nanoparticle concentration (0-1 wt.%) on the morphology, roughness, wettability, porosity, permeability, and protein filtration performance of the membranes was investigated. The membrane containing 0.25 wt% nanoparticles exhibited the lowest water contact angle (67°) and surface roughness (10.4 ± 2.8 nm) compared to the other membranes. Moreover, this membrane exhibited the highest porosity (74%) and the highest pure water flux (398 L/m2 h), which was 16% and 1.9 times higher than that of the pristine PES membrane. The modified PES membranes showed an improved antifouling ability, especially against irreversible fouling. Bovine serum albumin protein-based dynamic five-cycle filtration tests showed a maximum flux recovery ratio of 77% (cycle-1), 67% (cycle-2), and 65.8% (cycle-5) for the PES membrane containing 0.25 wt% nanoparticles. Overall, the biphasic Fe2O3-Mn2O3 nanoparticles were found to be an effective nanomodifier for improving the permeability and antifouling ability of PES membranes in protein separation and water treatment applications.

RESUMEN

Liquid biphasic flotation (LBF), an integrated process of liquid biphasic system (LBS) and adsorptive bubbles flotation, was used for the purification of C-phycocyanin from S. platensis microalgae. Various experimental parameters such as type of phase forming polymer and salt, concentration of phase forming components, system pH, volume ratio, air flotation time and crude extract concentration were evaluated to maximise the C-phycocyanin recovery yield and purity. The optimal conditions for the LBF system achieving C-phycocyanin purification fold of 3.49 compared to 2.43 from the initial LBF conditions was in polyethylene glycol (PEG) 4000 and potassium phosphate combination, with 250 g/L of polymer and salt concentration each, volume ratio of 1:0.85, system pH of 7.0, air flotation duration of 7 min and phycocyanin crude extract concentration of 0.625 %w/w. The LBF has effectively enhanced the purification of C-phycocyanin in a cost effective and simple processing.

RESUMEN

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), a family of biodegradable and renewable biopolymers show a huge potential as an alternative to conventional plastics. Extractive bioconversion (in situ product recovery) is a technique that integrates upstream fermentation and downstream purification. In this study, extractive bioconversion of PHAs from Cupriavidus necator H16 was performed via a thermo-separating aqueous two-phase system to reduce the cost and environmental impacts of PHAs production. Key operating parameters, such as polymer concentration, temperature, and pH, were optimized. The strategy achieved a yield and PF of 97.6% and 1.36-fold, respectively at 5% EOPO 3900 concentration, 30 °C fermentation temperature and pH 6. The PHAs production process was also successfully scaled up in a 2 L bioreactor. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on extractive fermentation of PHAs from Cupriavidus necator utilizing a thermo-separation system to achieve a better productivity and purity of the target product.

RESUMEN

Phosphoric acid impregnated activated carbon from date pits (DPAC) was prepared through single step activation. Prepared DPAC was studied for its structural, elemental, chemical, surface and crystal nature. Adsorption ability of the DPAC was assessed through divalent lead ions separation studies. Effect of adsorbent dosage, contact time, pH, operating temperature and initial feed concentration on lead removal by DPAC was studied. Maximum Pb(II) adsorption capacity of 101.35 mg/g was attained for a contact time of 30 min and pH of 6 at 30°C. Increase in initial feed concentration enhanced the adsorption ability of DPAC and the rise in adsorbent dosage resulted in improved Pb(II) removal efficiency. Thermodynamic studies revealed that the lead adsorption on DPAC was exothermic and instantaneous in nature. Kinetic and equilibrium studies confirmed the suitability of pseudo-second order and Langmuir isotherm for divalent lead ions binding on DPAC. Reusability studies showed that HCl was the effective regeneration medium and the DPAC could be reused for a maximum of 4 times with slight reduction in Pb(II) removal efficiency (<10%). Results indicated the promising use of date pits biomass as a low cost and efficient starting material to prepare activated carbon for divalent lead ions removal.
