RESUMEN

Results of measurements of radon around of the Black Sea are shown. Radon stations in zones of active faults were placed. Simultaneous hourly measurements of soil radon in 2005 were carried out in the Sivrice Fault Zone that is a segment of East Anatolian Fault System, in the town of Tbilisi (Georgia) and in the South Russia. In 2008 simultaneously hourly measurements of soil radon were carried out in the Western Caucasus (Russia) and in the Mytilene Island (Greece). In 2013 radon in underground waters simultaneously in midday was measuring in Crete (Greece), in the Pamukkale geothermal region (Southwest Turkey) and in the Western Caucasus. Measurements of radon concentration in the points located around of the Black Sea have shown identical regularities in changes of the data. Influence of meteorological, tidal and solar factors on changes of water radon concentrations and soil radon concentrations was observed in all researches points. But this influence was insignificant. Seismological application of observed results also was considered. Various mathematical methods of definition of anomaly in the radon data during earthquakes were considered. During researches in the Black Sea region basically earthquakes with M from 2.0 up to 5.0 and in a depth about 10 km were occurred. For these earthquakes method of daily subtraction of the data of the next and previous day was used. This method has allowed solving a problem with a choice of average value. Probability up to 0.69 (number of earthquakes with radon anomalies/total number of earthquakes) of detection of radon anomalies before earthquakes was achieved applying this method. Changes of radon maps before regional earthquakes were also observed. The frequency analysis of variations of the radon data on the basis of the Wavelet analysis was carried out. Occurrence of the short periods (about 2 days) was observed during regional earthquakes.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings including diffusion-weighted MRI of nonfunctional pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PanNETs) and their hepatic metastases, and investigate the relationships between MRI features and histopathological findings for each grade of PanNETs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 30 patients were included. There were 14 men and 16 women with a mean age of 61.60±11 (SD) years (range: 31-81years). PanNET lesions were analyzed qualitatively (signal intensities, contrast enhancement, lesion margins, presence of metastasis and characteristics of metastases) and quantitatively (signal intensity ratios, contrast enhancement indices and normalized apparent diffusion coefficient [ADC]). The relationships between MRI findings and histopathological findings were evaluated. RESULTS: Among 30 nonfunctional PanNETs, 11 were high-grade tumors, 10 were intermediate and 9 were low-grade tumors. All high grade PanNETs showed low to intermediate signal on T2-weighted images and ill-defined borders. All intermediate grade PanNETs had intermediate and 6 low grade PanNETs have high signal on T2-weighted images. Patients with hepatic metastases from high grade PanNETs had cystic component in 8/10 (80%) and wash-out in 7/10 (70%) whereas intermediate grade PanNETs had none (P<0.05). The normalized ADC values of high grade PanNETs was lower than those of intermediate and low grade PanNETs (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The presence of cystic component or contrast wash-out in hepatic metastases correlates with high grade PanNETs. The pre-operative MRI combined with DWI has an important role in grading and surgical planning of PanNETs.

RESUMEN

Iron deficiency (ID) is a global health problem. We aimed to determine the prevalence of ID at the first year of life in infants who were hospitalized in our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and investigate the effects of various factors on iron status. One year follow-up data of 219 infants who were discharged from NICU was retrospectively evaluated. ID anemia and ID without anemia were detected in fifteen infants (6.8%) and five (2.3%) infants, respectively. We concluded that, due to prophylactic iron treatment and close follow-up, hospitalization in neonatal period did not have any adverse effect on iron status at first year of life.

RESUMEN

Floating-Harbor syndrome is a rare disorder which is clinically characterized by short stature, retarded speech development, delayed bone ages, triangular face, bulbous nose and thin lips. We described two cases with Floating-Harbor syndrome and briefly reviewed the relevant literature.
