RESUMEN

The widespread utilization of personal protective equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 pandemic has been crucial for reducing transmission risk among healthcare workers (HCWs) and the public. However, the extensive use of PPE has brought about potential adverse reactions, particularly among HCWs. This study aims to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of adverse skin reactions associated with PPE use among different categories of HCWs, including faculty, residents, and nursing officers (NOs), in a dedicated tertiary care COVID-19 hospital. The study design was a hospital-based cross-sectional analytical study conducted over one month, involving a total of 240 participants. The participants were required to complete a pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire that covered demographic information, PPE-related data, preventive measures, observed reactions, and self-management strategies. Results indicated that adverse skin reactions were common among HCWs, with reactions reported by all participants. The most commonly used PPE included N95 masks, goggles, gloves, face shields, isolation gowns, and medical protective clothing. Excessive sweating (60% residents, 21.1% NOs, and 16.25% faculties), facial rash, dry palms (>70% of HCWs), and itching were among the most prevalent adverse reactions. Urticarial lesions (28.5% among NOs), pressure marks and pain (100% on the cheek among all HCWs), fungal infections (18.5% among residents at the web space of fingers), and skin breakdown were also reported. Factors such as age, gender, pre-existing skin problems, and oily/acne-prone skin history were found to be significantly associated with adverse skin reactions. In conclusion, the findings highlight the common adverse reactions reported by HCWs during the use of different PPEs. Certain steps taken by HCWs for the prevention of adverse reactions due to PPE emphasize the importance of tailored preventive measures and strategies to mitigate these adverse reactions, such as proper PPE selection, well-fitting equipment, regular breaks, and appropriate skincare practices. These insights contribute to the development of guidelines for optimal PPE usage and support the well-being of HCWs in their essential roles.

A robust "on-off" fluorescent aptasensor was developed using nanohybrids of molybdenum sulfide (MoS2) quantum dot (QD)-doped zinc metal-organic frameworks (Zn-MOF) for selective and sensitive detection of cadmium ions (Cd2+) in water. This nanohybrid (MoS2@Zn-MOF), synthesized via "bottle around the ship" methodology, exhibited a high-intensity fluorescence emission centered at 430 nm (λEm) (blue) on excitation at 320 nm (λEx). Further, the conjugation of this fluorophore to phosphate-modified cadmium aptamer (Cd-2-2) was achieved through carbodiimide reaction. The hybridization of prepared sensing probe (MoS2@Zn-MOF/Cd-2-2 aptamer) was done with dabcyl-conjugated complementary DNA (cDNA), acting as energy donor-acceptor pair in the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) system. This hybridization causes the fluorescence quenching of the nanohybrid. In the presence of Cd2+, the aptamer from the fabricated nano-biosensing probe binds to these ions, resulting in release of dabcyl-cDNA oligomer. This release of dabcyl-cDNA oligomer from the sensing probes restores the fluorescence of the nanohybrid. Under optimized conditions (sensing probe/dabcyl-cDNA ratio 1/7, pH 7.4, and temp 28 °C), the sensing probe showed a fast response time of 1 min. The fluorescence intensity of the nanohybrid can be utilized to determine the concentration of Cd2+. The proposed aptasensor achieved highly sensitive detection of Cd2+ with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.24 ppb over the range of 1 × 10-9 to 1 × 10-4 M along with minimal effects of interferences (e.g., Hg2+, Pb2+, and Zn2+) and good reproducibility. The designed aptasensor based on MoS2@Zn-MOF nanofluorophore offers a highly sensitive and selective approach for rapid screening of metal ions in aqueous environments.

Exciton-plasmon coupling is a fascinating physical phenomenon that has been investigated in various metal semiconductor systems. Intentionally chosen silicon nanowires (SiNWs) systems act as a host material for providing exciton as well as silicon oxide as a thin dielectric. A clear blue-shift in photoluminescence (PL) peak and a significant increase in visible range absorption were observed for metal nanoparticle (MNP) decorated SiNWs (D-SiNWs) which signifies the presence of exciton-plasmon coupling. A further investigation reveals that the possibility of the occurrence of the plasmon-induced resonance energy transfer (PIRET) mechanism is higher. The PL intensity enhancement in Au-decorated SiNWs is higher (∼38 times) in comparison to that in Pt due to the presence of a strong and localized electric field of plasmons near the interface of metal and semiconductors. Moreover, splitting in PL for gold-decorated SiNWs might be due to the presence of dipole-quadrupole coupling along with dipole-dipole coupling, which further increases the strength of the PIRET mechanism.

BACKGROUND: The glymphatic system plays a crucial role in clearing metabolic waste from the central nervous system and is most active during sleep. Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) have a dysfunctional glymphatic system that correlates with disease severity. In addition, these patients have worse outcomes after surgery. The status of the glymphatic system during the perioperative period is unclear and can be examined with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). This study assessed perioperative glymphatic system changes in OSA surgical patients and possible relationships with perioperative neurocognitive disorders. METHODS: DTI data from 13 OSA patients having laparoscopic abdominal surgery with general anesthesia were acquired and analyzed using a 3.0-T MRI scanner. Diffusivity maps in the x-axis (Dxx), y-axis (Dyy), z-axis (Dzz), x-y axis (Dxy), y-z axis (Dyz), and x-z axis (Dxz) were calculated. Diffusion values for the projection and association fibers were extracted, and DTI analysis along the perivascular space (ALPS) was performed. The patients' cognition was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment tool. Evaluations were carried out within 5 days before surgery and within the first 48 hours after surgery. RESULTS: The ALPS index decreased after surgery, and this correlated with a decrease in general cognition scores and specific memory domains, including visuospatial and delayed recall. CONCLUSIONS: The glymphatic system in OSA patients is worsened after surgery and this may contribute to an increased risk for long-term postoperative cognitive disorders. This study suggest that the glymphatic system might play a role in the pathophysiology of perioperative neurocognitive disorders and be a potential therapeutic target.

This study was conducted to estimate the seroprevalence of Peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) and to determine the virus distribution in unvaccinated goats in the Pantnagar region of Uttarakhand state, India. A total of 212 serum samples from goats were collected randomly from various villages in three districts (Udhamsingh Nagar, Nainital, and Almora) of Uttarakhand. Serum samples were tested for anti-PPRV antibodies by a commercially available kit. RNA was extracted from the clinical samples and it was subjected to one-step RT-PCR, followed by virus isolation from positive samples. A total of 41 animals from various villages were found to be seropositive with a prevalence rate of 19.33%. PPR outbreaks were also reported from the Tarai region of Uttarakhand, and detection by PCR confirmed PPRV in 8 goats. Two representative swab samples were subjected to virus isolation in Vero cells and both samples showed typical cytopathic effects. The present study shows that PPRV is circulating in the Tarai region of Uttarakhand and mass vaccination for PPR must be followed in this region to increase herd immunity to a protective level. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first investigation of PPRV seroprevalence in unvaccinated goats of Uttarakhand, India.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to predict quantitative parameter in form of metabolic ratios to diagnose tumor thrombus on F-18 FDG PET/CT. METHODS: This is a retrospective study from Nuclear Medicine department at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Jodhpur, India. Patients with malignancies who underwent F-18 FDG PET/CT in our department or images sent for review from February 2020 till September 2022 were screened for tumor thrombus that comprised study group. Control group had patients with malignancy and no imaging evidence of tumor thrombus. Metabolic activities (SUVmax) of tumor thrombus, liver and descending aorta in study group, and that of IVC, liver and descending aorta in control group were recorded. Metabolic ratios of tumor thrombus to liver (SUR L) and to aorta (SUR A) in study group, and IVC to liver (SUR* L) and to aorta (SUR*A) in control group were compared using receiver operator curves. RESULTS: Of 2277 studies screened, 12 had tumor thrombus. The most common primary malignant site and vessel involved were lung and IVC respectively. The median (IQR) SUR L, SUR A, SUR* L and SUR* A were 2.5 (3.25), 2.6  (6), 0.67 (0.18) and 1 (0.17) respectively. Area under ROC for SUR L and SUR A were 0.983 [95% CI: 0.955-1.0] and 0.958 [95% CI: 0.90-1.0] respectively. The ideal cut-off for SUR L was 0.953 (sensitivity 92.3%, specificity 98.0%) and for SUR A was 1.42 (sensitivity 84.6%, specificity 98.0%). CONCLUSION: Metabolic ratios of tumor thrombus to liver (SUR L) and aorta (SUR A) have good diagnostic performance and can be useful in studies with non-iodinated contrast CT.

BACKGROUND: Sheath blight and bakanae disease, prominent among emerging rice ailments, exert a profound impact on rice productivity, causing severe impediments to crop yield. Excessive use of older fungicides may lead to the development of resistance in the pathogen. Indeed, a pressing and immediate need exists for novel, low-toxicity and highly selective fungicides that can effectively combat resistant fungal strains. RESULTS: A series of 20 isoxazole derivatives were synthesized using alkoxy/halo acetophenones and N,N-dimethylformamidedimethylacetal. These compounds were characterized by various spectroscopic techniques, namely 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), 13C NMR and liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry, and were evaluated for their fungicidal activity against Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium fujikuroi. Compound 5n (5-(2-chlorophenyl) isoxazole) exhibited highest activity (effective dose for 50% inhibition [ED50] = 4.43 µg mL-1) against R. solani, while 5p (5-(2,4-dichloro-2-hydroxylphenyl) isoxazole) exhibited highest activity (ED50 = 6.7 µg mL-1) against F. fujikuroi. Two-dimensional quantitative structural-activity relationship (QSAR) analysis, particularly multiple linear regression (MLR) (Model 1), highlighted chi6chain and DistTopo as the key descriptors influencing fungicidal activity. Molecular docking studies revealed the potential of these isoxazole derivatives as novel fungicides targeting sterol 14α-demethylase enzyme, suggesting their importance as crucial intermediates for the development of novel and effective fungicides. CONCLUSION: All test compounds were effective in inhibiting both fungi, according to the QSAR model, with various descriptors, such as structural, molecular shape analysis, electronic and thermodynamic, playing an important role. Molecular docking studies confirmed that these compounds can potentially replace commercially available fungicides and help control fungal pathogens in rice crops effectively. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

This study is primarily focused on delving into the geochemistry of groundwater in the Kishangarh area, located in the Ajmer district of Rajasthan, India. In pursuit of this research goal, the sampling locations were divided into three parts within the Kishangarh region: Badgaon Rural (KSGR), Kishangarh Urban (KSGU), and the Kishangarh RIICO marble industrial area (KSGI). Various analytical methods have been executed to assess the suitability of groundwater for various purposes based on pH, electric conductivity, total dissolved solids, hardness, salinity, major anions, and cations. The ionic trend of anions and cations was found as HCO3- > Cl- > SO42- > NO3- > Br- > NO2- > F- and Na+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+ > K+, respectively. Applying statistical techniques such as principal component analysis (PCA) and Pearson correlation matrix analysis (PCMA) makes it evident that the physicochemical attributes of water sourced from the aquifers in the study area result from a blend of diverse origins. In addition, Gibbs, Piper, Durov, and scatter plots were used to assess groundwater's geochemical evolution. Piper plot demonstrated the two types of groundwater facies, Na-HCO3- and Na-Cl, implying significant contributions from evaporitic dissolution and silicate weathering. Also, the scatter plots have evaluated the impression of mine acid leachate, evaporitic dissolution, and silicate weathering to upsurge salt formation in the groundwater. The pollution risk evaluation within the study area was conducted using the groundwater pollution index (GPI). This index revealed a prominent concern for pollution, particularly in the northern segment of the study region. As a result, it can be inferred that the fine aeolian sand and silt formations in the northern part are relatively more vulnerable to contamination.

This study aims to introduce an integrated model for understanding the influence of various sentimental factors in conjunction with macroeconomic factors on portfolio returns across ten industry sectors within the US market. These sentimental factors are categorized into market-wide, consumer, and individual stock market factors to assess their impact on industry portfolio returns. Employing the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model, the study evaluates the effects of macroeconomic and sentimental factors on stock market portfolio returns. The findings reveal a negative relationship between short-term interest rates and portfolio returns in specific industry sectors like manufacturing, telecom, and wholesale/retail. The study finds a positive relationship between the Hi-tech sector's risk spread and portfolio returns. Market sentimental factors positively influence portfolio returns of durable, non-durable, utility, and other sectors. Individual sentimental factors negatively impact portfolio returns in hi-tech, utility, durable, energy, and other sectors. The stock market-related individual, sentimental factor of the number of IPOs has a positive impact on portfolio returns in the energy sector and a negative impact on portfolio returns in other sectors. Consumer sentimental factors are significant positive determinants for portfolio returns in durable, energy, telecom, health, and other sectors. Discounts on closed-end funds may provide vital fundamental information regarding lower future earnings for stocks in the durable and energy sectors. The study provides valuable insights for investors to optimize their portfolio strategies in response to macroeconomic and sentimental factors within specific industry sectors.

A series of 16 novel prenylated chalcones (5A-5P) was synthesized by microwave-assisted green synthesis using 5-prenyloxy-2-hydroxyacetophenone and different benzaldehydes. Comparisons were also performed between the microwave and conventional methods in terms of the reaction times and yields of all compounds, where the reaction times in the microwave and conventional methods were 1-4 min and 12-48 h, respectively. The synthesized compounds were characterized using different spectroscopic techniques, including IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, and LC-HRMS. The antifungal activities of all compounds were evaluated against Sclerotium rolfsii and Fusarium oxysporum under in vitro conditions and were additionally supported by structure-activity relationship (SAR) and molecular docking studies. Out of the 16 compounds screened, 2'-hydroxy-4-benzyloxy-5'-O-prenylchalcone (5P) showed the highest activity against both S. rolfsii and F. oxysporum, with ED50 of 25.02 and 31.87 mg/L, respectively. The molecular docking studies of the prenylated chalcones within the active sites of the EF1α and RPB2 gene sequences and FoCut5a sequence as the respective receptors for S. rolfsii and F. oxysporum revealed the importance of the compounds, where the binding energies of the docked molecules ranged from -38.3538 to -26.6837 kcal/mol for S. rolfsii and -43.400 to -23.839 kcal/mol for F. oxysporum. Additional docking parameters showed that these compounds formed stable complexes with the protein molecules.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the utility of F-18 FDG PET/CT in the non-invasive diagnosis of autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) and differentiating it from pancreatic cancer (CaP) based on the amount and pattern of FDG uptake, as well as involvement of extra-pancreatic sites. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library and Google Scholar. Only those studies that compared the findings of F-18 FDG PET/CT in terms of SUVmax, pattern of FDG uptake and presence of FDG-avid extra-pancreatic sites in both AIP and CaP were included. Studies were qualitatively assessed for risk of bias and publication bias. The diagnostic performance of parameters on PET/CT was examined through pooled sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic odd's ratio (DOR) and summary receiver operator characteristic (SROC) curve analysis. RESULTS: Six studies were included with a total of 580 patients. 178 patients had AIP (Age 18-90 years, male, M: female, F ratio-8.4:1) and 402 patients had CaP (Age 22-88 years, M:F ratio-1.5:1). Type of AIP was reported in only 3 studies, with the included cases predominantly being type 1 AIP. All studies were retrospective with heterogeneity and a risk on patient selection and index test. The FDG uptake, expressed as SUVmax, was lower in AIP with a weighted mean difference of -3.11 (95% confidence interval, CI: -5.28 to -0.94). To diagnose AIP, the pooled sensitivity, specificity and DOR of diffuse pattern of FDG uptake were 0.59 (95% CI: 0.51-0.66), 0.89 (95% CI: 0.86-0.92) and 21.07 (95% CI: 5.07-88.32), respectively, with an area under curve (AUC) of 0.717 on SROC analysis. The pooled sensitivity, specificity and DOR of FDG-avid extra pancreatic sites were 0.55 (95% CI: 0.45-0.65), 0.58 (95% CI: 0.52-0.64) and 2.33 (95% CI: 1.40-3.89), respectively, with an AUC of 0.632. CONCLUSION: On F-18 FDG PET/CT, a pancreatic lesion of AIP has a lower SUVmax value than CaP. A diffuse pattern of FDG uptake and presence of an extra-pancreatic FDG-avid site are nearly 21 times and twice more likely in AIP than CaP, respectively.

OBJECTIVE: Postoperative length of stay (LOS) significantly contributes to healthcare costs and resource utilization. The primary goal of this study was to identify patient, clinical, surgical, and institutional variables that influence LOS after elective surgery for degenerative conditions of the cervical spine. The secondary objectives were to examine the variability in LOS and institutional practices used to decrease LOS. METHODS: This was a multicenter observational retrospective cohort study of patients enrolled in the Canadian Spine Outcomes and Research Network (CSORN) between January 2015 and October 2020 who underwent elective anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) (1-3 levels) or posterior cervical fusion (PCF) (between C2 and T2) with/without decompression for degenerative conditions of the cervical spine. Prolonged LOS was defined as LOS greater than the median for the ACDF and PCF populations. The principal investigators at each participating CSORN healthcare institution completed a survey to capture institutional practices implemented to reduce postoperative LOS. RESULTS: In total, 1228 patients were included (729 ACDF and 499 PCF patients). The median (IQR) LOS for ACDF and PCF were 1.0 (1.0) day and 5.0 (4.0) days, respectively. Predictors of prolonged LOS after ACDF were female sex, myelopathy diagnosis, lower baseline SF-12 mental component summary score, multilevel ACDF, and perioperative adverse events (AEs) (p < 0.05). Predictors of prolonged LOS after PCF were nonsmoking status, education less than high school, lower baseline numeric rating scale score for neck pain and EQ5D score, higher baseline Neck Disability Index score, and perioperative AEs (p < 0.05). Myelopathy did not significantly predict prolonged LOS within the PCF cohort after multivariate analysis. Of the 8 institutions (57.1%) with an enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol or standardized protocol, only 3 reported using an ERAS protocol specific to patients undergoing ACDF or PCF. CONCLUSIONS: Patient and clinical factors predictive of prolonged LOS after ACDF and PCF are highly variable, warranting individual consideration for possible mitigation. Perioperative AEs remained a consistent independent predictor of prolonged LOS in both cohorts, highlighting the importance of preventing intra- and postoperative complications.

Six red-light-emitting Eu(III) complexes having a ß-hydroxyketone as ligand and heterocyclic ring containing compounds as ancillary ligands were synthesized to explore their use in displays and optoelectronics. The coordinating behavior of complexes was determined by various techniques such as FTIR (Fourier transform infrared), 1H-NMR (Nuclear magnetic resonance), and 13C-NMR that establishes a bonding of ligand and ancillary ligand with the Eu(III) ion. Morphology and purity were investigated through XRD (X-ray diffraction), SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and EDS (energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) analyses that suggest semicrystalline and pure complex formation. Thermal analysis of complexes by TGA/DTG (thermogravimetric/derivative thermogravimetric) indicates that complexes are stable upto 200 ºC temperature making them suitable for use in display devices. Analysis of the photophysical properties was carried out in both solid and solution states using PL (photoluminescence) studies, color parameters, J-O (Judd-Ofelt) analysis and bandgap. Most emissive transition (5D0 → 7F2) is responsible for the red emission in the complexes. The CIE (Commission International de I'Eclairage) coordinates of complexes also indicate the red emission on UV excitation. The bandgap which was obtained in the range of 2.54-3.02 eV reveals the semiconducting behavior of complexes. Values of J-O parameters and Ω2 in the complexes reflect asymmetric chemical environment around Eu (III) and less covalence and the Ω4 indicates that complexes are less rigid. Bandgap calculated through DFT (density function theory) for complexes is in range of 2.37-2.77 eV, and intensity parameters (J-O), energy transfer rates, and spherical coordinates were determined by LUMPAC software. The computational data are in good harmony with the experimental data. Further biological aspects of complexes were studied using antioxidant and antimicrobial studies.

To study the surgical result and efficacy of different methods of mastoid obliteration with cavity care. This prospective study included 60 patients who had cholesteatoma, conducted in the Department of Ear Nose and Throat (ENT), Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi from July 2015 to July 2017. The mastoid cavity was obliterated with either muscle flap/bone dust/hydroxyapatite. detailed history otoscopic examination was done pre-operatively and follow up were recorded at 1 month and 3 months in postoperative period. 60 patients were included, who underwent canal wall down mastoid surgery. each group muscle flap (group 1), bone dust (group 2) and hydroxyapatite (group 3) included 20 patients, age group 31-40 year with its maximum incidence of 43.3%, Preop PTA value were almost equal in all group but on comparison at 1 month in postoperative period significant improvement was present in group 1 versus 2(0.021) and group 2 versus 3(0.003) but not in group 1 versus 3. Although at 3 month there were significant improvement was present in all groups. The incidence of pain, discharge, giddiness and wax formation were markedly reduced and healing of cavities was early and better in obliterated cavities done by muscle flap and bone dust material as compared to hydroxyapatite cavities, at the end of 3 months. outcome and quality of life was better and almost equal in muscle flap and bone dust material group as compared to hydroxyapatite group.

RESUMEN

Most of the Escherichia coli turned into serious pathogens or developed antibiotic resistance, mainly due to their ability to show different phenotypic traits. In order to overcome the resistance to these antibiotics, the use of essential oils (EOs) is of great significance against highly pathogenic microorganisms. This study has been made to compare the in vitro antibacterial activity and further validated the same through the molecular docking study of 13 antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin, chloramphenicol, erythromycin, ampicillin, cefotaxime, rifampicin, kanamycin, vancomycin, streptomycin, penicillin, nalidixic acid, trimethoprim, and polymyxin, and 10 EOs such as garlic, tulsi, neem, clove, thyme, peppermint, coriander, tea, lavender, and eucalyptus against the target protein (DNA gyrase) of E. coli MTCC443. E. coli Microbial Type Culture Collection 443 was found to be highly sensitive to ciprofloxacin (zone of inhibition [ZOI], 2.5 cm ±0.1) and chloramphenicol (ZOI, 1.8 cm ±0.1), whereas garlic oil (ZOI, 5.5 cm ±0.1) and coriander oil (ZOI, 4.4 cm ±0.1) were found comparatively most effective. Further, the in silico investigation observed the same; ciprofloxacin (binding affinity: -7.2 kcal/mol) and chloramphenicol (binding affinity: -6.6 kcal/mol). Penicillin (binding affinity: -4.2 kcal/mol) and polymyxin (binding affinity: -0.3 kcal/mol) were found to be least effective against the tested microbe, whereas vancomycin (binding affinity: +0.8 kcal/mol) had no effect on it. Garlic (binding affinity: -7.8 kcal/mol), coriander (binding affinity: -6.8 kcal/mol), peppermint (binding affinity: -6.2 kcal/mol), and neem (binding affinity: -6.2 kcal/mol) oil exhibited the potent antibacterial activity against E. coli MTCC443, whereas thyme (binding affinity: -6.1 kcal/mol), tea tree (binding affinity: -4.9 kcal/mol), and tulsi (binding affinity: -3.8 kcal/mol) oil were observed moderately effective. Eucalyptus (binding affinity: -2.9 kcal/mol) and lavender (binding affinity: -2.8 kcal/mol) oil were found to be the least effective among all the oils tested. The pharmacokinetics and networking were performed to the pharmacology of the potential compounds.

Intensive crop residue burning (CRB) in northern India triggers severe air pollution episodes over the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) each year during October and November. We have quantified the contribution of hotspot districts (HSDs) and total CRB to poor air quality over the IGP. Initially, we investigated the spatiotemporal distribution of CRB fire within the domain and pinpointed five HSD in each Punjab and Haryana. Furthermore, we have simulated air quality and quantified the impact of CRB using the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry (WRF-Chem), incorporating recent anthropogenic emissions (EDGAR v5) and biomass burning emissions (FINN v2.4) inventories, along with MOZART-MOSAIC chemistry. The key finding is that HSDs contributed ∼80% and ∼50% of the total fire counts in Haryana and Punjab, respectively. The model effectively captured observed PM2.5 concentrations, with a normalized mean bias (NMB) below 0.2 and R-squared (R2) exceeding 0.65 at the majority of validation sites. However, some discrepancies were observed at a few sites in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and West Bengal. The National Capital Region experienced the highest PM2.5 concentrations, followed by Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal. Moreover, HSDs were responsible for about 70% of the total increase in CRB-induced PM2.5 in the western, central, and eastern cities, and around 50% in the northern cities. By eliminating CRB emissions across the domain, we could potentially save approximately 18,000 lives annually. Policymakers, scientists, and institutions can leverage the framework to address air pollution at national and global scales by targeting source-specific hotspots. This approach, coupled with appropriate technological and financial solutions, can contribute to achieving climate change and sustainable development goals.

Candida species is the causative agent in approximately 80% of invasive mycoses and drug-resistant Candida albicans is among the four strains of 'critical priority group' framed by WHO. Lichens are endowed with some rare phytochemicals and a plethora of therapeutics viz. antifungal capacities of Roccella montagnei. Biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using lichen could offer an eco-friendly, and cost-effective alternative against emerging 'microbial resistance.' Therefore, the objective was to biosynthesize silver nanoparticles (Rm-AgNPs) using a Hydro-alcoholic (1:1) extract of R. montagnei to develop a potent anticandidal agent against Fluconazole-resistant C. albicans NBC099. UV-Spectroscopy identified AgNPs specific-peak of Rm-AgNPs at 420-440 nm and FTIR revealed the presence of amines, alcohol, aromatic compounds, and acids. SEM and TEM analysis indicated that Rm-AgNPs are spherical shaped with a size range of 10-50 nm. Zetasizer analysis indicated that particles are highly stable and have a mean hydrodynamic diameter of 116 nm with a zeta potential charge of - 41 mV. XRD analysis suggested face centered cubic crystal lattice structure. Results indicated that Rm-AgNPs strongly inhibited the growth of NBC099 at a minimum inhibitory concentration (IC50) of ≤ 15 µg. C. albicans culture treated with Rm-AgNPs at concentrations below IC50, down-regulates the production of different virulence factors in NBC099, viz. hyphal formation (> 85%), biofilms production (> 80%), phospholipase, esterase, proteinase activity. The apoptosis assay demonstrated the Rm-AgNPs induced apoptosis in NBC099 cells via oxidative stress. Interestingly, Rm-AgNPs showed negligible cytotoxicity (< 6%) in murine RAW 246.7 macrophage cells at a concentration above 15 µg/mL. Therefore, Rm-AgNPs have been offered as an anti-candida alternative that can be utilized to improve the efficacy of already available medications.

Pathogenic infections cause thymic atrophy, perturb thymic T-cell development, and alter immunological response. Previous studies reported dysregulated T-cell function and lymphopenia in coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19). However, immunopathological changes in the thymus associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection have not been elucidated. Here, we report that SARS-CoV-2 infects thymocytes, and induces CD4+CD8+ (double positive; DP) T-cell apoptosis leading to thymic atrophy and loss of peripheral TCR repertoire in K18-hACE2 transgenic mice. Infected thymus led to increased CD44+CD25- T-cells, indicating an early arrest in the T-cell maturation pathway. Thymic atrophy was notably higher in male hACE2-Tg mice than in females and involved an upregulated de-novo synthesis pathway of thymic glucocorticoid. Further, IFN-γ was crucial for thymic atrophy, as anti-IFN-γ -antibody neutralization blunted thymic involution. Therapeutic use of Remdesivir also rescued thymic atrophy. While the Omicron variant and its sub-lineage BA.5 variant caused marginal thymic atrophy, the delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 exhibited severe thymic atrophy characterized by severely depleted DP T-cells. Recently characterized broadly SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing monoclonal antibody P4A2 was able to rescue thymic atrophy and restore the thymic maturation pathway of T-cells. Together, we report SARS-CoV-2-associated thymic atrophy resulting from impaired T-cell maturation pathway which may contribute to dyregulated T cell response during COVID-19.

Iodine-containing molecules, especially hypervalent iodine compounds, have gained significant attention in organic synthesis. They are valuable and sustainable reagents, leading to a remarkable surge in their use for chemical transformations. One such hypervalent iodine compound, phenyliodine bis(trifluoroacetate)/bis(trifluoroacetoxy)iodobenzene, commonly referred to as PIFA, has emerged as a prominent candidate due to its attributes of facile manipulation, moderate reactivity, low toxicity, and ready availability. PIFA presents an auspicious prospect as a substitute for costly organometallic catalysts and environmentally hazardous oxidants containing heavy metals. PIFA exhibits remarkable catalytic activity, facilitating an array of consequential organic reactions, including sulfenylation, alkylarylation, oxidative coupling, cascade reactions, amination, amidation, ring-rearrangement, carboxylation, and numerous others. Over the past decade, the application of PIFA in synthetic chemistry has witnessed substantial growth, necessitating an updated exploration of this field. In this discourse, we present a concise overview of PIFA's applications as a 'green' reagent in the domain of synthetic organic chemistry. A primary objective of this article is to bring to the forefront the scientific community's awareness of the merits associated with adopting PIFA as an environmentally conscientious alternative to heavy metals.

Microplastics (MPs) is the second most important environmental issue and can potentially enter into food chain through farmland contamination and other means. There are no standardized extraction methods for quantification of MPs in soil. The embedded errors and biases generated serious problems regarding the comparability of different studies and leading to erroneous estimation. To address this gap, present study was formulated to develop an efficient method for MPs analysis suitable for a wide range of soil and organic matrices. A method based on Vis-NIR (Visible-Near Infra Red) spectroscopy is developed for four different soil belonging to Alfisol, Inceptisol, Mollisol and Vertisol and two organic matter matrices (FYM and Sludge). The developed method was found as rapid, reproducible, non-destructive and accurate method for estimation of all three-density groups of MPs (Low, Medium and High) with a prediction accuracy ranging from 1.9 g MPs/kg soil (Vertisol) to 3.7 g MPs/kg soil (Alfisol). Two different regression models [Partial Least Square Regression (PLSR) and Principal Component Regression (PCR)] were assessed and PLSR was found to provide better information in terms of prediction accuracy and minimum quantification limit (MQL). However, PCR performed better for organic matter matrices than PLSR. The method avoids any complicated sample preparation steps except drying and sieving thus saving time and acquisition of reflectance spectrum for single sample is possible within 18 s. Owing to have the minimum quantification limit ranging from 1.9-3.7 g/kg soil, the vis-NIR based method is perfectly suitable for estimation of MPs in soil samples collected from plastic pollution hotspots like landfill sites, regular based sludge amended farm soils. Additionally, the method can be adapted by small scale compost industries for assessing MPs load in product like city compost which are applied at agricultural fields and will be helpful in quantifying possible MPs at the sources itself.
