X-ray radiography is currently used in dentistry and can be divided into two categories: two-dimensional (2D) radiographic images (e.g., using periapical film, cephalometric film, and panoramic X-ray) and three-dimensional (3D) radiographic images (e.g., using dental cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT)). Among them, 2D periapical film images are most commonly used. However, 2D periapical film compresses 3D image information into a 2D image, which means that depth cannot be identified from the image. Such compressed images lose a considerable amount of information, reducing their clinical applicability. A 2.5D periapical radiography system prototype was developed by our research team. Our previous study indicated that this prototype could be used to capture images at different depths of an object. However, the prototype was limited by its commercially available intraoral periapical sensor, which had a low temporal resolution and could not capture multiple images in a short period of time. Therefore, the total time required for image capture was too long for practical clinical application. The present study developed a high-frame-rate intraoral periapical sensor with a sensor imaging speed of up to 15 Hz. The primary components of the developed intraoral periapical sensor include a scintillator, complementary metal oxide semiconductor chip, component circuit board, and video processing board. The external dimensions of the sensor are 41 × 26 × 6.6 mm3. The performance of the developed high-frame-rate intraoral periapical sensor was verified through qualified and quantified analyses using line pairs. The results showed that the resolution of the developed intraoral periapical sensor could reach 18 lp/mm. The sensor was further installed in our 2.5D periapical radiography system to conduct image capturing. The results indicated that the developed sensor could be used for high-frame-rate imaging to incorporate tomosynthesis to obtain reconstructed slice images of different depths. The developed sensor has the potential for clinical dentistry applications in the future.

To further reduce the noise and artifacts in the reconstructed image of sparse-view CT, we have modified the traditional total variation (TV) methods, which only calculate the gradient variations in x and y directions, and have proposed 8- and 26-directional (the multi-directional) gradient operators for TV calculation to improve the quality of reconstructed images. Different from traditional TV methods, the proposed 8- and 26-directional gradient operators additionally consider the diagonal directions in TV calculation. The proposed method preserves more information from original tomographic data in the step of gradient transform to obtain better reconstruction image qualities. Our algorithms were tested using two-dimensional Shepp-Logan phantom and three-dimensional clinical CT images. Results were evaluated using the root-mean-square error (RMSE), peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), and universal quality index (UQI). All the experiment results show that the sparse-view CT images reconstructed using the proposed 8- and 26-directional gradient operators are superior to those reconstructed by traditional TV methods. Qualitative and quantitative analyses indicate that the more number of directions that the gradient operator has, the better images can be reconstructed. The 8- and 26-directional gradient operators we proposed have better capability to reduce noise and artifacts than traditional TV methods, and they are applicable to be applied to and combined with existing CT reconstruction algorithms derived from CS theory to produce better image quality in sparse-view reconstruction.

This study used available or purchased equipment and an image reconstruction system developed by the college of dentistry to establish a basic self-assembled micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) system. Such a system would be suitable for teaching dental radiology to dental students. Specifically, it could help students to understand the principles governing dental cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and provide graduate students with a system for scanning small samples (e.g., individual teeth) during the early stages of research. The self-assembled micro-CT system was constructed using a portable dental X-ray tube, an intraoral digital X-ray detector, a high-precision rotation stage, related bracket accessories, and a notebook computer. Reconstructed images and three-dimensional models of the maxillary right third molar were produced using the self-assembled micro-CT system and an advanced commercially available micro-CT system (Skyscan 2211). Subsequently, the reconstructed images and 3D models produced using the two systems were compared by two senior dentists to determine whether considerable visual differences could be observed. Finally, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was used for quantitative analysis and to compare the systems. Although the self-assembled micro-CT system produced image boundaries that were not as sharp as those of Skyscan 2211, the images were nonetheless remarkably similar. In addition, the two micro-CT systems produced 3D models that were almost identical in appearance and root canal shape. Quantitative analysis revealed that Skyscan 2211 had produced a SNR that was superior to that of the self-assembled micro-CT system, with the difference ranging from 36.77% to 136.22%; enamel, which has a higher density, exhibited lower SNR differences, whereas dentin, which has a lower density, exhibited higher SNR differences. The self-assembled micro-CT system with a resolution of 36 µm was created using a portable dental X-ray tube and an intraoral digital X-ray detector. Although the scanning time was relatively long (~30 min to scan images of a tooth), the images were adequate in the preliminary stage of experiments. More importantly, students were afforded the opportunity to observe the process of assembling and disassembling each component of a micro-CT scanner and thereby achieve a more comprehensive understanding of the principles governing micro-CT and dental CBCT.

Limited-angle iterative reconstruction (LAIR) reduces the radiation dose required for computed tomography (CT) imaging by decreasing the range of the projection angle. We developed an image-quality-based stopping-criteria method with a flexible and innovative instrument design that, when combined with LAIR, provides the image quality of a conventional CT system. This study describes the construction of different scan acquisition protocols for micro-CT system applications. Fully-sampled Feldkamp (FDK)-reconstructed images were used as references for comparison to assess the image quality produced by these tested protocols. The insufficient portions of a sinogram were inpainted by applying a context encoder (CE), a type of generative adversarial network, to the LAIR process. The context image was passed through an encoder to identify features that were connected to the decoder using a channel-wise fully-connected layer. Our results evidence the excellent performance of this novel approach. Even when we reduce the radiation dose by 1/4, the iterative-based LAIR improved the full-width half-maximum, contrast-to-noise and signal-to-noise ratios by 20% to 40% compared to a fully-sampled FDK-based reconstruction. Our data support that this CE-based sinogram completion method enhances the efficacy and efficiency of LAIR and that would allow feasibility of limited angle reconstruction.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: This study investigated the effects of three three-dimensional (3D) bone-to-implant contact (BIC) parameters-potential BIC area (pBICA), BIC area (BICA), and 3D BIC percentage (3D BIC%; defined as BICA divided by pBICA)-in relation to the implant diameter on primary implant stability, as well as their correlations were also evaluated. METHODS: Dental implants with diameters of 3.75, 4, 5, and 6 mm and artificial bone specimens were scanned by microcomputed tomography to construct 3D models for calculating pBICA, BICA, and 3D BIC%. Indexes of the primary implant stability including the insertion torque value (ITV), Periotest value (PTV), and implant stability quotient (ISQ) were measured after implants with various diameters were placed into bone specimens. The Kruskal-Wallis test, Wilcoxon rank-sum test with Bonferroni adjustment, and Spearman correlations were all performed as statistical and correlation analyses. RESULTS: The implant diameter significantly influenced pBICA and BICA, but not 3D BIC%. ITV and PTV were more sensitive to implant diameter than was ISQ. The coefficients of determination were high (>0.92) for the correlations between pBICA (or BICA) and indexes of the primary implant stability. CONCLUSION: This study revealed how the implant diameter and the three-dimensional (3D) BIC influence the primary stabilities of dental implant. ITV and PTV were more sensitively influenced by the implant diameter than ISQ. The pBICA and BICA seem to be more important than 3D BIC % for using wider implant in treatment plan, since those two parameters are highly predictive of variations in the primary stability of dental implant.

Cinnamomum verum has been used as a traditional Chinese herbal medicine. We evaluated the anticancer effect of 2-methoxycinnamaldehyde (2-MCA), a constituent of the bark of the plant, in hepatocellular carcinoma Hep 3B cells. The results show that 2-MCA suppressed proliferation and induced apoptosis as indicated by an up-regulation of pro-apoptotic bax and bak genes and down-regulation of anti-apoptotic bcl-2 and bcl-XL genes, mitochondrial membrane potential loss, cytochrome c release, activation of caspase 3 and 9, increase in the DNA content in sub G1, and morphological characteristics of apoptosis. 2-MCA also induced lysosomal vacuolation with increased volume of acidic compartments (VAC), suppressions of nuclear transcription factors NF-κB, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and both topoisomerase I and II activities in a dose-dependent manner. Further study reveals the growth-inhibitory effect of 2-MCA was also evident in a nude mice model. Taken together, the data suggest that the growth-inhibitory effect of 2-MCA against Hep 3B cells is accompanied by downregulations of NF-κB binding activity, inflammatory responses involving COX-2 and PGE2, and proliferative control involving apoptosis, both topoisomerase I and II activities, together with an upregulation of lysosomal vacuolation and VAC. Our data suggest that 2-MCA could be a potential agent for anticancer therapy.

The preparation of TiO(2) nanocrystallite powders coated with and without 9 mol% ZnO has been studied for cosmetic applications in sunscreens by a co-precipitation process using TiCl(4) and Zn(NO(3))(2)·6H(2)O as starting materials. XRD results show that the phases of anatase TiO(2) and rutile TiO(2) coexist for precursor powders without added ZnO (T-0Z) and calcined at 523 to 973 K for 2 h. When the T-0Z precursor powders are calcined at 1273 K for 2 h, only the rutile TiO(2) appears. In addition, when the TiO(2) precursor powders contain 9 mol% ZnO (T-9Z) are calcined at 873 to 973 K for 2 h, the crystallized samples are composed of the major phase of rutile TiO(2) and the minor phases of anatase TiO(2) and Zn(2)Ti(3)O(8). The analyses of UV/VIS/NIR spectra reveal that the absorption of the T-9Z precursor powders after being calcined has a red-shift effect in the UV range with increasing calcination temperature. Therefore, the TiO(2) nanocrystallite powders coated with 9 mol% ZnO can be used as the attenuate agent in the UV-A region for cosmetic applications in sunscreens.

In this study, an optical zooming design method is constructed by ray tracing. The loci of each thin lens is determined utilizing algebraic relationships. A mechanical compensation structure is adapted to stabilize the position of the focal plane. The Gaussian design result is applied for the midwave infrared spectrum, and aberrations can be reduced by controlling the geometric parameters of the thick lens. One hybrid achromatic singlet is introduced utilizing a diffraction optical element. The kinoform surface relief is calculated being the same as its microfabrication process. The effects of the discontinuous zonal profile and the thermal degradation are evaluated.

RESUMEN

A step-zoom and reimaging structure were utilized to construct a dual field-of-view optical design for high-magnification switching in the 3-5 microm spectral band. The design has a flexible optomechanical layout, which means it can be utilized for multipurpose applications. The effects of the surrounding environmental temperature and axial gradient temperature are analyzed using the concept of thermal resistance, and the thermal compensation is discussed. A description of the zooming mechanism and optomechanical control is offered.
