RESUMEN

Periodontitis is an inflammatory condition affecting the supporting structures of the teeth. Periodontal conditions may increase the susceptibility of individuals to various systemic illnesses, including Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative condition characterized by a gradual onset and progressive deterioration, making it the primary cause of dementia, although the exact cause of the disease remains elusive. Both Alzheimer's disease and periodontitis share risk factors and clinical studies comparing the associations and occurrence of periodontitis among individuals with Alzheimer's disease have suggested a potential correlation between these conditions. Brains of individuals with Alzheimer's disease have substantiated the existence of microorganisms related to periodontitis, especially Porphyromonas gingivalis, which produces neurotoxic gingipains and may present the capability to breach the blood-brain barrier. Treponema denticola may induce tau hyperphosphorylation and lead to neuronal apoptosis. Lipopolysaccharides-components of bacterial cell membranes and mediators of inflammation-also have an impact on brain function. Further research could unveil therapeutic approaches targeting periodontal pathogens to potentially alleviate AD progression.

RESUMEN

The extracellular matrix (ECM) is a complex non-cellular three-dimensional macromolecular network present within all tissues and organs, forming the foundation on which cells sit, and composed of proteins (such as collagen), glycosaminoglycans, proteoglycans, minerals, and water. The ECM provides a fundamental framework for the cellular constituents of tissue and biochemical support to surrounding cells. The ECM is a highly dynamic structure that is constantly being remodeled. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are among the most important proteolytic enzymes of the ECM and are capable of degrading all ECM molecules. MMPs play a relevant role in physiological as well as pathological processes; MMPs participate in embryogenesis, morphogenesis, wound healing, and tissue remodeling, and therefore, their impaired activity may result in several problems. MMP activity is also associated with chronic inflammation, tissue breakdown, fibrosis, and cancer invasion and metastasis. The periodontium is a unique anatomical site, composed of a variety of connective tissues, created by the ECM. During periodontitis, a chronic inflammation affecting the periodontium, increased presence and activity of MMPs is observed, resulting in irreversible losses of periodontal tissues. MMP expression and activity may be controlled in various ways, one of which is the inhibition of their activity by an endogenous group of tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs), as well as reversion-inducing cysteine-rich protein with Kazal motifs (RECK).

Introduction: The colonization of the oral cavity by potentially pathogenic antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in adolescents and its consequences is very poorly understood. The present study focused on the occurrence of oral colonization by Gram-negative bacilli (GNB) and their multidrug resistance, including the production of extended-spectrum ß-lactamases (ESBLs) and carbapenemases, among healthy adolescents and risk factors associated with GNB colonization. Materials and methods: This study was conducted as part of "A program for the early detection of risk factors for lifestyle diseases SOPKARD-Junior" (SOPKARD-Junior). Oral samples were collected from 182 adolescents from four public elementary schools in Sopot, Poland, aged 13-14 years. Bacterial strains were identified by the MALDI-TOF MS method. Screening of antimicrobial resistance was performed using a disk diffusion method. The NG-Test® CARBA-5 was used to detect and differentiate the five most widely distributed carbapenemases. Demographic and clinical data were collected and statistical analysis of risk factors was performed. Results: A total of 68 out of 182 (37.4%) healthy adolescents was documented oral colonization with Gram-negative bacilli, including 50/182 (27.5%) multidrug resistant (MDR-GNB) strains. Over 60% of oral carriage concerned three main genera Enterobacter spp., Pseudomonas spp., and Serratia spp., which were detected in 22.1%, 19.1%, and 19.1% of participants, respectively. Citrobacter spp., Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Hafnia spp., Aeromonas spp., Acinetobacter spp., and Stenotrophomonas spp. were also isolated. The antimicrobial resistance to ampicillin (100%), ceftazidime (69.1%), meropenem (60.3%), gentamycin (60.3%), piperacillin/tazobactam (52.9%), and piperacillin (45.6%) were the most common. Among 73.5% GNB strains multidrug resistance was observed, including all Pseudomonas spp. strains. Among MDR-GNB, 30.4% were resistant to four groups of antibiotics, half of the MDR Pseudomonas spp. strains were resistant to 10 groups of antibiotics. Extended-spectrum ß-lactamases were produced by Enterobacter cloacae, Klebsiella spp., and Serratia spp. (7.4%). Colonization by ESBLs-positive GNB strains was significantly associated with recurrent respiratory infections, nasal congestion, and bronchitis (p<0.05). Conclusion: Our study revealed high oral carriage of multi-drug resistant Gram-negative bacilli in healthy adolescents and the association of ESBL-producing strains with respiratory infections. Further studies on oral colonization with GNB are necessary due to the possibility of distinct infections and the acquisition of antibiotic resistance by resident microbiota.

We aimed to analyse ostiomeatal complex (OMC) aeration using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method of simulation based on human craniofacial computed tomography (CT) scans. The analysis was based on CT images of 2 patients: one with normal nose anatomy and one with nasal septal deviation (NSD). The Reynolds-Average Simulation approach and turbulence model based on linear eddy viscosity supplemented with the two-equation k-[Formula: see text] SST model were used for the CFD simulation. As a result, we found differences in airflow velocity through the ostiomeatal complex in patients with a normal nose and those with NSD. In a patient with NSD, the flow is turbulent in contrast to the normal nose (laminar flow). A faster (more intensive) airflow through the OMC was observed in the wider nasal cavity of the patient with NSD than on the narrower side. In addition, we want to emphasise the higher speed of airflow through the apex uncinate process area towards the ostiomeatal complex during exhalation, which, in the presence of secretions in the nose, predisposes to its easier penetration into the sinuses of the anterior group.

(1) Background: Periodontitis is an inflammatory condition that affects the tissues surrounding the tooth and causes clinical attachment loss, which is the loss of periodontal attachment (CAL). Periodontitis can advance in various ways, with some patients experiencing severe periodontitis in a short period of time while others may experience mild periodontitis for the rest of their lives. In this study, we have used an alternative methodology to conventional statistics, self-organizing maps (SOM), to group the clinical profiles of patients with periodontitis. (2) Methods: To predict the periodontitis progression and to choose the best treatment plan, we can use artificial intelligence, more precisely Kohonen's self-organizing maps (SOM). In this study, 110 patients, both genders, between the ages of 30 and 60, were included in this retrospective analysis. (3) Results: To discover the pattern of patients according to the periodontitis grade and stage, we grouped the neurons together to form three clusters: Group 1 was made up of neurons 12 and 16 that represented a percentage of slow progression of almost 75%; Group 2 was made up of neurons 3, 4, 6, 7, 11, and 14 in which the percentage of moderate progression was almost 65%; and Group 3 was made up of neurons 1, 2, 5, 8, 9, 10, 13, and 15 that represented a percentage of rapid progression of almost 60%. There were statistically significant differences in the approximate plaque index (API), and bleeding on probing (BoP) versus groups (p < 0.0001). The post-hoc tests showed that API, BoP, pocket depth (PD), and CAL values were significantly lower in Group 1 relative to Group 2 (p < 0.05) and Group 3 (p < 0.05). A detailed statistical analysis showed that the PD value was significantly lower in Group 1 relative to Group 2 (p = 0.0001). Furthermore, the PD was significantly higher in Group 3 relative to Group 2 (p = 0.0068). There was a statistically significant CAL difference between Group 1 relative to Group 2 (p = 0.0370). (4) Conclusions: Self-organizing maps, in contrast to conventional statistics, allow us to view the issue of periodontitis advancement by illuminating how the variables are organized in one or the other of the various suppositions.

Chronic ulcerative stomatitis (CUS) is a rarely reported disease affecting the oral cavity, most often affecting middle-aged Caucasian females. The aim of the present study is to present the diagnosis, differentiation, and interdisciplinary treatment of this rare disease. CUS is characterized by the presence of an oral erosive or ulcerative lesion. The autoimmune pathogenesis of CUS includes affecting the antigen's activity by DNA-breaking and protein-hydrolyzing enzymes. The stratified epithelium-specific antinuclear antibodies (SES-ANA) are associated with CUS development. Clinically, the lesions presented in oral mucosa might resemble an erosive form of oral lichen planus, whereas gingival lesions seem to be similar to desquamative gingivitis related to dermatological diseases manifested in the oral cavity. Patients often report subjective symptoms related to oral mucosa and general symptoms. Histopathological presentation of CUS is often non-specific and includes sub-epithelial separation from underlying connective tissue, atrophic epithelium, and inflammatory infiltrate with an increased number of plasma cells and lymphocytes. Direct immunofluorescence (DIF) might be used in CUS diagnostics. CUS generally remains nonsusceptible to corticosteroid treatments; however, antimalarial drugs and calcineurin inhibitors are more effective. Further research should be conducted in order to implement a diagnostic protocol and observe the long-term results of CUS management.

Introduction: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is mainly a problem of the female reproductive tract. It can occur in the oral cavity as well. Commonly HPV infections are subclinical, without any visible symptoms, and last no longer than 2 years. Usually the clinical manifestation of HPV infection is benign, but in some cases it can also promote malignant transformation. In the paper we have tried to estimate the prevalence of HPV detected in samples of oral leukoplakia (OLK), the most common premalignant lesions of the oral mucosa. Aim: To review the current literature to estimate the prevalence of HPV (HPV DNA) detected in samples of oral leukoplakia. Material and methods: We searched PubMed/Medline, Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases for studies that examined the prevalence of HPV in leukoplakia with HPV DNA detection by polymerase chain reaction. Results: HPV positive cases in OLK ranged from 0% to 100% in studies. The overall HPV prevalence in leukoplakia was 6.66%. The prevalence of HPV 16 positive cases was 2.95%. The high-risk HPV prevalence was 5.16%, when the low-risk HPV prevalence was 3.32%. When dysplasia is mentioned, HPV was detected in 19.56% of lesions with dysplasia, compared to 38.16% among non-dysplastic lesions. Conclusions: Further studies should be extended also to include low-risk HPV and compare its prevalence with presence of dysplasia in leukoplakia. Besides, leukoplakia and other premalignant lesions can no longer be treated as one lesion.

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the tissues surrounding the tooth that results in loss of periodontal attachment detected as clinical attachment loss (CAL). The mildest form of periodontal disease is gingivitis, which is a necessary condition for periodontitis development. We can distinguish also some modifying factors which have an influence on the rate of development of periodontitis from which the most important are smoking and poorly controlled diabetes. According to the new classification from 2017, we can identify four stages of periodontitis and three grades of periodontitis. Grades tell us about the periodontitis progression risk and may be helpful in treatment planning and motivating the patients. Artificial neural networks (ANN) are widely used in medicine and in dentistry as an additional tool to support clinicians in their work. In this paper, ANN was used to assess grades of periodontitis in the group of patients. Gender, age, nicotinism approximal plaque index (API), bleeding on probing (BoP), clinical attachment loss (CAL), and pocket depth (PD) were taken into consideration. There were no statistically significant differences in the clinical periodontal assessment in relation to the neural network assessment. Based on the definition of the sensitivity and specificity in medicine we obtained 85.7% and 80.0% as a correctly diagnosed and excluded disease, respectively. The quality of the neural network, defined as the percentage of correctly classified patients according to the grade of periodontitis was 84.2% for the training set. The percentage of incorrectly classified patients according to the grade of periodontitis was 15.8%. Artificial neural networks may be useful tool in everyday dental practice to assess the risk of periodontitis development however more studies are needed.

The variability in clinical trial results on memantine treatment of Alzheimer's disease remains incompletely explained. The aim of this in silico study is a virtual memantine therapy for Alzheimer's disease that provides a different perspective on clinical trials; An in silico randomised trial using virtual hippocampi to treat moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease with doses of memantine 3-30 µM compared to placebo. The primary endpoint was the number of impulses (spikes). Secondary endpoints included interspike interval and frequency; The number of virtual moderate-AD hippocampal spikes was significantly lower, at 1648.7 (95% CI, 1344.5-1952.9), versus those treated with the 3 µM dose, 2324.7 (95% CI, 2045.9-2603.5), and the 10 µM dose, 3607.0 (95% CI, 3137.6-4076.4). In contrast, the number of virtual spikes (spikes) of severe AD of the hippocampus was significantly lower, at 1461.8 (95% CI, 1196.2-1727.4), versus those treated with the 10 µM dose, at 2734.5 (95% CI, 2369.8-3099.2), and the 30 µM dose, at 3748.9 (95% CI, 3219.8-4278.0). The results of the analysis of secondary endpoints, interspike intervals and frequencies changed statistically significantly relative to the placebo; The results of the in silico study confirm that memantine monotherapy is effective in the treatment of moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease, as assessed by various neuronal parameters.

(1) Background: in patients with neurodegenerative diseases, noncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonists provide neuroprotective advantages. We performed memantine therapy and proved mathematical and computer modeling of neurodegenerative disease in this study. (2) Methods: a computer simulation environment of the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor incorporating biological mechanisms of channel activation by high extracellular glutamic acid concentration. In comparison to controls, pathological models were essentially treated with doses of memantine 3−30 µM. (3) Results: the mean values and 95% CI for Shannon entropy in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and memantine treatment models were 1.760 (95% CI, 1.704−1.818) vs. 2.385 (95% CI, 2.280−2.490). The Shannon entropy was significantly higher in the memantine treatment model relative to AD model (p = 0.0162). The mean values and 95% CI for the positive Lyapunov exponent in AD and memantine treatment models were 0.125 (95% CI, NE−NE) vs. 0.058 (95% CI, 0.044−0.073). The positive Lyapunov exponent was significantly higher in the AD model relative to the memantine treatment model (p = 0.0091). The mean values and 95% CI for transfer entropy in AD and memantine treatment models were 0.081 (95% CI, 0.048−0.114) vs. 0.040 (95% CI, 0.019−0.062). The transfer entropy was significantly higher in the AD model relative to the memantine treatment model (p = 0.0146). A correlation analysis showed positive and statistically significant correlations of the memantine concentrations and the positive Lyapunov exponent (correlation coefficient R = 0.87, p = 0.0023) and transfer entropy (TE) (correlation coefficient R = 0.99, p < 0.000001). (4) Conclusions: information theory results of simulation studies show that the NMDA antagonist, memantine, causes neuroprotective benefits in patients with AD. Our simulation study opens up remarkable new scenarios in which a medical product, drug, or device, can be developed and tested for efficacy based on parameters of information theory.

Mouthwashes are a very popular additional oral hygiene element and there are plenty of individual products, whose compositions are in a state of flux. The aim of our study was to investigate the compositions of mouthwashes and their functions, as well as to discuss their effectiveness in preventing and curing oral diseases and side effects. We searched for mouthwashes available on the market in Poland. We identified 241 individual mouthwash products. The extraction of compositions was performed and functions of the ingredients were assessed. Then, analysis was performed. The evaluation revealed that there are plenty of ingredients, but a typical mouthwash is a water-glycerine mixture and consists of additional sweetener, surfactant, preservative, and some colourant and flavouring agent, as well as usually having two oral health substances, anticaries sodium fluoride and antimicrobial essential oils. The effectiveness or side effects of several substances of mouthwashes were thoroughly discussed. We recommend not multiplying individual mouthwash products and their ingredients beyond medical or pharmaceutical necessity, especially without scientific proof.

(1) Background: The use of uncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonists results in neuroprotective benefits in patients with moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease. In this study, we demonstrated mathematical and computer modelling of the excitotoxicity phenomenon and performed virtual memantine therapy. (2) Methods: A computer simulation environment of the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor combining biological mechanisms of channel activation by means of excessive extracellular glutamic acid concentration in three models of excitotoxicity severity. The simulation model is based on sliding register tables, where each table is associated with corresponding synaptic inputs. Modelling of the increase in extracellular glutamate concentration, through over-stimulation of NMDA receptors and exacerbation of excitotoxicity, is performed by gradually increasing the parameters of phenomenological events by the power function. Pathological models were virtually treated with 3−30 µM doses of memantine compared to controls. (3) Results: The virtual therapy results of memantine at doses of 3−30 µM in the pathological models of excitotoxicity severity show statistically significant neuroprotective benefits in AD patients with moderate severity, 1.25 (95% CI, 1.18−1.32) vs. 1.76 (95% CI, 1.71−1.80) vs. 1.53 (95% CI, 1.48−1.59), (p < 0.001), to severe, 1.32 (95% CI, 1.12−1.53) vs. 1.77 (95% CI, 1.72−1.82) vs. 1.73 (95% CI, 1.68−1.79), (p < 0.001), in the area of effects on memory. A statistically significant benefit of memantine was demonstrated for all neuronal parameters in pathological models. In the mild severity model, a statistically significant increase in frequency was obtained relative to virtual memantine treatment with a dose of 3 µM, which was 23.5 Hz (95% CI, 15.5−28.4) vs. 38.8 Hz (95% CI, 34.0−43.6), (p < 0.0001). In the intermediate excitotoxicity severity model, a statistically significant increase in frequency was obtained relative to virtual memantine therapy with a 3 µM dose of 26.0 Hz (95% CI, 15.7−36.2) vs. 39.0 Hz (95% CI, 34.2−43.8) and a 10 µM dose of 26.0 Hz (95% CI, 15.7−36.2) vs. 30.9 Hz (95% CI, 26.4−35.4), (p < 0.0001). A statistically significant increase in frequency was obtained in the advanced excitotoxicity severity model as in the medium. (4) Conclusions: The NMDA antagonist memantine causes neuroprotective benefits in patients with moderate to severe AD. One of the most important benefits of memantine is the improvement of cognitive function and beneficial effects on memory. On the other hand, memantine provides only symptomatic and temporary support for AD patients. Memantine is prescribed in the US and Europe if a patient has moderate to severe AD. Memantine has also been approved for mild to moderate AD patients. However, its very modest effect provides motivation for further research into new drugs in AD. We are the first to present a mathematical model of the NMDA receptor that allows the simulation of excitotoxicity and virtual memantine therapy.

(1) Background: Electronic cigarettes are gaining more popularity not only among cigarettes smokers. Firstly, e-cigarettes were perceived as less harmful than traditional cigarettes, however, nowadays, they are arousing more controversy. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of e-cigarette usage on selected physicochemical properties of saliva. (2) Methods: The study population included 128 patients: 40 patients using e-cigarettes, 39 patients smoking traditional cigarettes, and 49 non-smoking patients (non-smokers). Laboratory tests involved verification of saliva values of pH and concentration of total protein, calcium, and phosphates. (3) Results: Among e-cigarette users, the value of pH was lower and the concentration of total protein, calcium, and phosphates was higher than in the group of non-smokers. Statistically significant differences were observed in relation to calcium. Among traditional cigarette smokers, the value of pH was lower, concentrations of total protein and phosphates were higher than in the group of non-smokers. Statistically significant differences were observed in relation to total protein. (4) Conclusions: Saliva of e-cigarette users presents changes in physicochemical composition in comparison to traditional cigarette smokers and non-smokers, however, statistically significant differences were observed only in calcium concentration. Further longitudinal studies on a larger study group should be conducted to assess the effect of observed changes in oral health.

Nowadays, artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming more important in medicine and in dentistry. It can be helpful in many fields where the human may be assisted and helped by new technologies. Neural networks are a part of artificial intelligence, and are similar to the human brain in their work and can solve given problems and make fast decisions. This review shows that artificial intelligence and the use of neural networks has developed very rapidly in recent years, and it may be an ordinary tool in modern dentistry in the near future. The advantages of this process are better efficiency, accuracy, and time saving during the diagnosis and treatment planning. More research and improvements are needed in the use of neural networks in dentistry to put them into daily practice and to facilitate the work of the dentist.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The aims were to review the literature from the last two decades and analyze treatment efficacy and findings of the studies on colpocleisis. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted within the MEDLINE/PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov databases, using the following keywords: pelvic organ prolapse (POP), colpocleisis, obliterative, and LeFort. All English full-text prospective and retrospective observational and interventional studies were included. Anatomical and subjective success, surgical techniques, concomitant procedures, complication rates, anesthesia methods, and decision regret were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 237 papers were identified and 49 met the inclusion criteria. Mean patient age was 69.0 ± 8.0 to 84 ± 3.1. Over 90.2% of patients undergoing colpocleisis were diagnosed with POP stage ≥ 3. The follow-up ranged from 30 days to a median of 5 years. Anatomical success, defined as POP-Q stage ≤ 1 and no prolapse beyond the hymen, was achieved in 62.5 to 100% and 87.5 to 100% of all patients respectively. Subjective success ranged from 88% to 100%. Regret over the loss of coital ability ranged from 0% in many studies to 12.9%, general decision regret from 0% to 13.8%. After concomitant midurethral sling surgery, 86.8% to 94% of all patients were continent, with a 0-14% sling revision rate due to urinary retention. Urinary tract infection was the most common postoperative complication (4.3 to 9% confirmed with urine culture, 34.7% based on symptom definition). Bowel (0 to 2.7%) and urinary tract (0 to 9.1%) injuries were the consequences of concomitant procedures. The mortality rates were up to 1.3%. CONCLUSIONS: Colpocleisis is a heterogeneous procedure, characterized by high subjective and objective success, low coital ability regret, and a low risk of complications.

RESUMEN

The usefulness of probiotics in the treatment as well as prevention of many infections and disorders has been confirmed by previous clinical studies. They can protect not only against gastrointestinal diseases such as diarrhea or enteritis but they have proven efficacy against pneumonia, urogenital infection, depression/anxiety, cancer metastasis, obesity, and others. However, it should be mentioned that not all clinical trials have shown improvement of health in patients undergoing probiotic treatment, and very rarely have even reported that probiotic strains may be the causative agents of opportunistic infections. Studies have documented cases of sepsis/bacteremia, endocarditis, liver abscess, pneumonia, and fungemia caused by probiotic strains, mainly in high-risk groups. This review summarizes the cases of infections caused by probiotic strains and the potential hazard associated with the supplementation of probiotics in seriously ill and hospitalized patients.

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the caries intensity and Streptococcus mutans (SM) counts in patients with Turner syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nineteen patients aged 20-40 years were clinically and cytogenetically diagnosed with Turner syndrome (45, X). The karyotype was determined by chromosome analysis of peripheral blood lymphocytes. The control group comprised 47 healthy women aged 21-40 years. Both groups included non-smokers with no specific diet, such as a vegetarian or vegan diet, who were generally healthy with good oral hygiene and periodontal condition. Patients treated with antibiotics or steroid preparations in the past 6 months or with diseases or conditions that might affect the oral mucosal environment, such as disorders of salivary secretion and diabetes, were excluded from the study. Decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) scores and SM counts in saliva were determined. RESULTS: No colony growth of SM was noticed in 53% of patients with Turner syndrome and 4.2% of controls (p < 0.001). Colony counts of SM ≥ 105 in saliva were observed in none of the patients with Turner syndrome but in 66% of controls (p < 0.001). The mean DMFT score was 1.63 ± 2.52 in patients with Turner syndrome and 14.49 ± 6.88 in controls. Statistically significant differences between the two groups were observed (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Patients with genetic disorders may have different severities of caries and SM counts in saliva compared to those without genetic disorders. Further studies on saliva properties and genes located on the X chromosome could contribute to determining the effect of the X chromosome on the pathological processes in the oral cavity.

The balance between reactive oxygen species production and the activity of antioxidant systems present in saliva is an important element in maintaining oral environment homeostasis. E-cigarettes adversely affect the oral cavity and their cytotoxic effect is related to oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of using electronic cigarettes on antioxidant capacity of saliva. The study involved 110 subjects (35 e-cigarettes users, 33 traditional cigarettes smokers and 42 non-smokers). Laboratory analysis involved quantitation of uric acid, hypoxanthine, xanthine, TAOS (total antioxidant status) and TEAC (Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity) in saliva. Lower values for TAOS and TEAC were observed among e-cigarettes users and traditional cigarettes smokers in comparison to non-smokers. Uric acid concentration tended to be higher among e-cigarettes users while no differences in hypoxanthine and xanthine saliva concentrations were observed. Electronic cigarettes usage affects antioxidant capacity of saliva to the same extent as traditional cigarettes, when comparing smokers to non-smokers. Further longitudinal studies on a larger study group are needed to assess the effect of changes in antioxidant status on oral health.

INTRODUCTION: Electronic cigarettes have already become a popular alternative to traditional smoking. AIM: To observe if there were any changes in oral bacteria of electronic cigarette users. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study population included 125 patients (40 - e-cigarette users, 43 - cigarette smokers, 42 - non-smokers). The conducted microbiological tests were aimed at identification of microorganisms with potential pathological influence on the oral cavity. Distributions of the study variables were compared between groups with χ2 test. All calculations were carried out with Statistical 10 software (Stat Soft Inc.; Tulsa, USA) and intergroup differences were considered significant at p ≤ 0.05. RESULTS: The differences were statistically significant in relation to Gram-negative bacteria in e-cigarette users (27.5%) compared to smokers of traditional cigarettes (4.6%) (p < 0.05). In relation to Gram-positive bacteria, no statistically significant differences were found between these groups. Co-occurrence of commensal bacteria and potentially pathogenic bacteria from the oral cavity among e-cigarette users was higher than in smokers of traditional cigarettes (32.1% vs. 9.2%; p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The use of e-cigarettes caused changes in oral bacteria compared to smokers of traditional cigarettes and non-smokers especially with respect to colonization of potentially pathogenic bacteria. Changes in the oral cavity environment to the disadvantage of commensal flora can affect the course of some pathological processes in the oral cavity.
