RESUMEN

Tooth agenesis is a common structural birth defect in humans that results from failure of morphogenesis during early tooth development. The homeobox transcription factor Msx1 and the canonical Wnt signaling pathway are essential for "bud to cap" morphogenesis and are causal factors for tooth agenesis. Our recent study suggested that Msx1 regulates Wnt signaling during early tooth development by suppressing the expression of Dkk2 and Sfrp2 in the tooth bud mesenchyme, and it demonstrated partial rescue of Msx1-deficient molar teeth by a combination of DKK inhibition and genetic inactivation of SFRPs. In this study, we found that Sostdc1/Wise, another secreted Wnt antagonist, is involved in regulating the odontogenic pathway downstream of Msx1. Whereas Sostdc1 expression in the developing tooth germ was not increased in Msx1-/- embryos, genetic inactivation of Sostdc1 rescued maxillary molar, but not mandibular molar, morphogenesis in Msx1-/- mice with full penetrance. Since the Msx1-/-;Sostdc1-/- embryos exhibited ectopic Dkk2 expression in the developing dental mesenchyme, similar to Msx1-/- embryos, we generated and analyzed tooth development in Msx1-/-;Dkk2-/- double and Msx1-/-;Dkk2-/-;Sostdc1-/- triple mutant mice. The Msx1-/-;Dkk2-/- double mutants showed rescued maxillary molar morphogenesis at high penetrance, with a small percentage also exhibiting mandibular molars that transitioned to the cap stage. Furthermore, tooth development was rescued in the maxillary and mandibular molars, with full penetrance, in the Msx1-/-;Dkk2-/-;Sostdc1-/- mice. Together, these data reveal 1) that a key role of Msx1 in driving tooth development through the bud-to-cap transition is to control the expression of Dkk2 and 2) that modulation of Wnt signaling activity by Dkk2 and Sostdc1 plays a crucial role in the Msx1-dependent odontogenic pathway during early tooth morphogenesis.

IMPORTANCE: Brain metastasis (BM) is the most common malignant intracranial neoplasm in adults with over 100,000 new cases annually in the United States and outnumbering primary brain tumors 10:1. OBSERVATIONS: The incidence of BM in adult cancer patients ranges from 10-40%, and is increasing with improved surveillance, effective systemic therapy, and an aging population. The overall prognosis of cancer patients is largely dependent on the presence or absence of brain metastasis, and therefore, a timely and accurate diagnosis is crucial for improving long-term outcomes, especially in the current era of significantly improved systemic therapy for many common cancers. BM should be suspected in any cancer patient who develops new neurological deficits or behavioral abnormalities. Gadolinium enhanced MRI is the preferred imaging technique and BM must be distinguished from other pathologies. Large, symptomatic lesion(s) in patients with good functional status are best treated with surgery and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). Due to neurocognitive side effects and improved overall survival of cancer patients, whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) is reserved as salvage therapy for patients with multiple lesions or as palliation. Newer approaches including multi-lesion stereotactic surgery, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy are also being investigated to improve outcomes while preserving quality of life. CONCLUSION: With the significant advancements in the systemic treatment for cancer patients, addressing BM effectively is critical for overall survival. In addition to patient's performance status, therapeutic approach should be based on the type of primary tumor and associated molecular profile as well as the size, number, and location of metastatic lesion(s).

Motor synergies are neural organizations of a set of redundant motor effectors that interact with one another to compensate for each other's error and ensure the stabilization of a performance variable. Recent studies have demonstrated that central nervous system synergistically coordinates its numerous motor effectors through Bayesian multi-sensory integration. Deficiency in sensory synergy weakens the synergistic interaction between the motor effectors. Here, we scrutinize the neuromechanical mechanism underlying this phenomenon through spectral analysis and modeling. We validate our model-generated results using experimental data reported in the literature collected from participants performing a finger force production task with and without tactile feedback (manipulated through injection of anesthetic in fingers). Spectral analysis reveals that the error compensation feature of synergies occurs only at low frequencies. Modeling suggests that the neurophysiological structures involving short-latency back-coupling loops similar to the well-known Renshaw cells explain the deterioration of synergy due to sensory deprivation.

BACKGROUND: In gallbladder cancer, stage T2 is subdivided by tumour location into lesions on the peritoneal side (T2a) or hepatic side (T2b). For tumours on the peritoneal side (T2a), it has been suggested that liver resection may be omitted without compromising the prognosis. However, data to validate this argument are lacking. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic value of tumour location in T2 gallbladder cancer, and to clarify the adequate extent of surgical resection. METHODS: Clinical data from patients who underwent surgery for gallbladder cancer were collected from 14 hospitals in Korea, Japan, Chile and the USA. Survival and risk factor analyses were conducted. RESULTS: Data from 937 patients were available for evaluation. The overall 5-year disease-free survival rate was 70·6 per cent, 74·5 per cent for those with T2a and 65·5 per cent among those with T2b tumours (P = 0·028). Regarding liver resection, extended cholecystectomy was associated with a better 5-year disease-free survival rate than simple cholecystectomy (73·0 versus 61·5 per cent; P = 0·012). The 5-year disease-free survival rate was marginally better for extended than simple cholecystectomy in both T2a (76·5 versus 66·1 per cent; P = 0·094) and T2b (68·2 versus 56·2 per cent; P = 0·084) disease. Five-year disease-free survival rates were similar for extended cholecystectomies including liver wedge resection versus segment IVb/V segmentectomy (74·1 versus 71·5 per cent; P = 0·720). In multivariable analysis, independent risk factors for recurrence were presence of symptoms (hazard ratio (HR) 1·52; P = 0·002), R1 resection (HR 1·96; P = 0·004) and N1/N2 status (N1: HR 3·40, P < 0·001; N2: HR 9·56, P < 0·001). Among recurrences, 70·8 per cent were metastatic. CONCLUSION: Tumour location was not an independent prognostic factor in T2 gallbladder cancer. Extended cholecystectomy was marginally superior to simple cholecystectomy. A radical operation should include liver resection and adequate node dissection.


ANTECEDENTES: En el cáncer de vesícula biliar, la ubicación del tumor subdivide el estadio T2 en tumores con invasión del lado peritoneal y del lado del hígado (T2a y T2b). Para los tumores que invaden el lado peritoneal (T2a) se sugiere que se puede obviar la resección hepática sin que ello comprometa el pronóstico. Sin embargo, este argumento no ha sido validado. El estudio tuvo como objetivo investigar el valor pronóstico de la localización del tumor en el cáncer de vesícula biliar T2 y establecer la extensión adecuada de la resección quirúrgica. MÉTODOS: Se recogieron los datos clínicos de pacientes que se sometieron a cirugía por cáncer de vesícula biliar en 14 hospitales de Corea, Japón, Chile y Estados Unidos. Se realizaron análisis de la supervivencia y de los factores de riesgo. RESULTADOS: Se dispuso de datos de 937 pacientes para ser evaluados. La tasa de supervivencia global libre de enfermedad a los 5 años fue del 70,6%, y las de T2a y T2b del 74,5% y 65,5% (P = 0,028). Con respecto a la resección hepática, la colecistectomía extendida presentó una tasa mejor de supervivencia libre de enfermedad a los 5 años que la colecistectomía simple (73,0% versus 61,5%, P = 0,012). La tasa de supervivencia libre de enfermedad a los 5 años fue marginalmente mejor para la colecistectomía extendida que para la colecistectomía simple tanto en T2a (76,5% versus 66,1%, P = 0,094) como en T2b (68,2% versus 56,2%, P = 0,084). Las tasas de supervivencia libre de enfermedad a los 5 años no fueron diferentes entre la resección hepática en cuña y la segmentectomía S4b+S5 (74,1% versus 71,5%, P = 0,720). En el análisis multivariable, los factores de riesgo independientes para la recidiva fueron la presencia de síntomas (cociente de riesgos instantáneos, hazard ratio, HR 1,52, P = 0,002), la resección R1 (HR 1,96, P = 0,004) y el estadio N1/N2 (N1 HR 3,40, P < 0,001; N2 HR 9,56, P < 0,001). El 70,8% de las recidivas eran metastásicas. CONCLUSIÓN: La localización del tumor no fue un factor pronóstico independiente en el cáncer de vesícula biliar T2. La colecistectomía extendida fue marginalmente superior que la colecistectomía simple. La cirugía radical debe incluir una resección hepática y una linfadenectomía adecuada.

Enterococcus faecalis is a facultative anaerobic gram-positive commensal bacterium common in the gastrointestinal tract of animals and humans. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of heat-killed E. faecalis EF-2001 (EF-2001) on acute gastric ulcer using a murine model of ethanol (EtOH)-induced acute gastric injury. EF-2001 (20, 40, and 80 mg/kg/day) was administered by oral gavage for 5 days before EtOH treatment (10 mL/kg body weight). EF-2001 effectively attenuated EtOH-induced gastric mucosal injury with reduced gastric mucosal ulcer and histological damage score. Pretreatment of EF-2001 markedly suppressed the phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs; ERK1/2, JNK, and p38MAPK). In addition, EF-2001 significantly inhibited phosphorylation of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and subsequently suppressed the upregulation of inducible nitric oxide synthase, cyclooxygenase-2, tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin 1 beta, and interleukin 6 in gastric tissues. Taken together, these results suggest that EF-2001 exerts a gastroprotective effect against acute gastric injury, and the underlying mechanism might be associated with the suppression of MAPKs and NF-κB signaling and consequent reduction of pro-inflammatory mediators or cytokines.

BACKGROUND: Adequate kidney donor management after donation is increasingly emphasized due to concerns of renal function impairment after nephrectomy with increasing life expectancy. In this study, the clinical impact of a protocolized kidney donor follow-up system by nephrologists was evaluated. METHODS: A total of 427 living kidney donors underwent nephrectomy from January 2010 to December 2014 and were followed for at least 2 years at the Samsung Medical Center. Donors were followed-up by nephrologists after the establishment of a donor clinic with systemized protocols in January 2013. The primary outcomes were incidence of post-donation low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and renal function adaptability. Secondary outcomes were changes in compliance and incidence of hyperuricemia and microalbuminuria. RESULTS: The patients were divided into 2 groups according to the time of nephrectomy: the pre-donor clinic period (n = 182) and the donor clinic period (n = 172). Preoperative eGFR in patients in the pre-donor clinic period was higher than that in patients in the donor clinic period. After donation, poor renal adaptation was less frequent in the donor clinic period compared to the pre-donor clinic period. Low eGFR tended to be less common during the donor clinic period. Shorter mean outpatient clinic visit intervals with more visits within 6 months after donation and earlier detection of de novo hyperuricemia were found during the donor clinic period. CONCLUSION: A protocolized donor clinic run by nephrologists may improve post-nephrectomy renal outcomes and compliance and facilitate better management of potential risk factors of chronic kidney disease in donors.

As the outermost layer of the tooth crown, dental enamel is the most mineralized tissue in mammals, consisting of hydroxyapatite crystallites separated by long and narrow nanochannels. A major challenge in dentistry is how various molecules can be infiltrated into these nanopores in an efficient and controlled way. Here we show a robust method to transport various ions of interest, such as fluoride (F-), potassium (K+), calcium (Ca++), and sodium (Na+), into these nanopores by electrokinetic flows. It is verified by fluorescence microscopy, laser-scanning confocal microscopy, mass spectrometry, and ion selective electrode technique. Different ions are demonstrated to infiltrate through the entire depth of the enamel layer (~1 mm), which is significantly enhanced penetration compared with diffusion-based infiltration. Meanwhile, transport depth and speed can be controlled by infiltration time and applied voltage. This is the first demonstration of reliably delivering both anions and cations into the enamel nanopores. This technique opens opportunities in caries prevention, remineralization, tooth whitening, and nanomedicine delivery in clinical dentistry, as well as other delivery challenges into various biomaterials such as bones.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Aneurysms arising from the proximal A1 segment of the anterior cerebral artery are rare, and their distinctive configurations often pose technical challenges during endovascular embolization. Herein, we present 11 patients with proximal A1 aneurysms requiring a contralateral approach (via the anterior communicating artery) to coil embolization. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From a prospectively collected data repository, we retrieved records of 11 patients consecutively treated for proximal A1 aneurysms between January 2011 and March 2018. In each instance, coil embolization was performed by the contralateral route. Outcomes were analyzed in terms of morphologic features and clinical status. RESULTS: Aneurysms in all 11 patients were directed posteriorly and were small (<5 mm). A contralateral approach (via the anterior communicating artery) was used after ipsilateral attempts at aneurysm selection failed in each instance, despite using a variety of microcatheters. Single punctures and single guiding catheters sufficed in 9 patients, but 2 patients required dual punctures and 2 guiding catheters. All endovascular treatments ultimately yielded excellent outcomes. Although 1 symptomatic infarct was manifested in the course of ipsilateral treatment, no morbidity or mortality resulted from the contralateral access. CONCLUSIONS: Due to angio-anatomic constraints, a contralateral strategy for coil embolization of proximal A1 aneurysms is acceptable if ipsilateral access is technically prohibitive and the vessels (contralateral A1 and anterior communicating artery) are amenable to the passage of microdevices.

Although different injection locations for retrolaminar and erector spinae plane blocks have been described, the two procedures have a similar anatomical basis. In this cadaveric study we compared anatomical spread of dye in the thoracic region following these two procedures. Following randomisation, 10 retrolaminar blocks and 10 erector spinae plane blocks were performed on the left or right sides of 10 unembalmed cadavers. For each block, 20 ml of dye solution was injected at the T5 level. The back regions were dissected and the involvement of the thoracic spinal nerve was also investigated. Twenty blocks were successfully completed. A consistent vertical spread, with deep staining between the posterior surface of the vertebral laminae and the overlaying transversospinalis muscle was observed in all retrolaminar blocks. Moreover, most retrolaminar blocks were predominantly associated with fascial spreading in the intrinsic back muscles. With an erector spinae plane block, dye spread in a more lateral pattern than with retrolaminar block, and fascial spreading in the back muscles was also observed. The number of stained thoracic spinal nerves was greater with erector spinae plane blocks than with retrolaminar blocks; median 2.0 and 3.5, respectively. Regardless of technique, the main route of dye spread was through the superior costotransverse ligament to the ipsilateral paravertebral space. Although erector spinae plane blocks were associated with a slightly larger number of stained thoracic spinal nerves than retrolaminar blocks, both techniques were consistently associated with posterior spread of dye and with limited spread to the paravertebral space.

Species-specific cusp patterns result from the iterative formation of enamel knots, the epithelial signaling centers, at the future cusp positions. The expressions of fibroblast growth factors (FGFs), especially Fgf4, in the secondary enamel knots in the areas of the future cusp tips are generally used to manifest the appearance of species-specific tooth shapes. However, the mechanism underlying the predictive role of FGFs in species-specific cusp patterns remains obscure. Here, we demonstrated that gerbils, which have a lophodont pattern, exhibit a striped expression pattern of Fgf4, whereas mice, which have a bunodont pattern, have a spotted expression pattern, and these observations verify the predictive role of Fgf4 in species-specific cusp patterns. By manipulating FGFs' signaling in the inner dental epithelium of gerbils, we provide evidence for the intracellular participation of FGF signaling, specifically FGF4 and FGF20, in Rac1- and RhoA-regulated cellular geometry remolding during the determination of different cusp patterns. Our study presents a novel explanation of how different FGF expression patterns produce different cusp patterns and implies that a conserved intracellular FGF-GTPase signaling module might represent an underlying developmental basis for evolutionary changes in cusp patterns.

AIM: To describe imaging characteristics of primary hepatic angiosarcoma on gadoxetate disodium-enhanced dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to determine features that differentiate angiosarcomas from similar-sized haemangiomas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 15 patients with hepatic angiosarcomas and 35 patients with size-matched hepatic haemangiomas who underwent gadoxetate disodium-enhanced liver MRI. The number, size, growth pattern, signal intensity (SI) characteristics, and SI changes on dynamic scans were evaluated and compared between the two entities. RESULTS: Overall, hepatic angiosarcomas significantly more often showed lesion multiplicity (86.7%), capsular retraction (40%), prominent intratumoural vessels (66.7%), vascular invasion (20%), heterogeneous SI on T2-weighted (100%) and hepatobiliary phase images (80%), and intralesional haemorrhage (60%, all p<0.05). On dynamic scans, angiosarcomas demonstrated enhancing foci of irregular or rim-like nodular/linear or bizarre (86.7%) shapes, with centrifugal or bizarre patterns of progressive enhancement (53.3%). Enhancement of angiosarcomas was less than that of the blood pool on visual grading, but the enhancement curves followed that of the aorta. Regardless of size, angiosarcomas showed heterogeneous T2 SI, intratumoural haemorrhage, and heterogeneity during the hepatobiliary phase, whereas these findings were more common in haemangiomas >6 cm in diameter. CONCLUSION: Gadoxetate disodium-enhanced dynamic liver MRI is capable of depicting vascular hallmarks of hepatic angiosarcomas. Heterogeneous SI on T2-weighted and hepatobiliary phase images, multiplicity, and an enhancement curve following that of the aorta are also distinctive features that differentiate angiosarcomas from haemangiomas.

BACKGROUND: Despite compensatory hyperfiltration in remaining nephrons following donor nephrectomy, some donors show impaired renal adaptation and low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). We investigated the factors predicting early renal adaptation after nephrectomy and identified kidney donors at risk of inadequate renal adaptation. METHODS: A total of 265 living kidney donors from 2010 to 2013 were retrospectively analyzed. Renal function was serially followed for 6 months after the operation. Regression analyses were performed to identify the independent predictors of low eGFR (eGFR <60 mL/min/1.73 m2) and impaired renal adaptation (%Modification of Diet in Renal Disease [MDRD] <66% of baseline eGFR). RESULTS: A total of 148 donors belonged to the low eGFR group, and changes in eGFR (ΔeGFR) at postoperative (PO) 1 day and 1 month were identified as independent predictors of low eGFR. Impaired renal adaptation was related to age, ΔeGFR PO 2-3 days, and ΔeGFR PO 1 month. Early renal adaptation was associated with age, male gender, and residual kidney computerized tomography angiography (CTA) volume. The best sensitivity and specificity were obtained with a cutoff value of ΔeGFR 31 at PO 1 day and 1 month for predicting low eGFR and with a value of ΔeGFR 27 at PO 2-3 days and 1 month for predicting impaired renal adaptation. CONCLUSIONS: Our study showed that the degree of early renal adaptation determines subsequent renal function in kidney donors. Closer monitoring and management may be required in old or male donors with small residual CTA kidney volume as well as donors with persistent ΔeGFR >27 within 1 month of nephrectomy.

BACKGROUND: Cyclosporine (CsA) usually reduces glomerular filtration rate (GFR) but also can induce tubular injury without resulting in GFR reduction. Apelin is an endogenous ligand for the apelin receptor and has diverse physiologic roles related to hemodynamic or metabolic processes. We investigated the renoprotective role of apelin against CsA-induced tubular toxicity in rats. METHODS: Rats were given CsA (15 mg/kg/day) and/or apelin-13 (15 µg/kg/day) for 7 days via subcutaneous injection. We performed serum and urinary assays of creatinine and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) to estimate renal injury and performed Western blotting for endothelial nitric oxide synthase and nuclear factor of activated T-cell cytoplasmic 1 (NFATc1) to document the underlying mechanism. RESULTS: The CsA-treated group showed increased urinary creatinine excretion, polyuria, and renal glycosuria without GFR reduction, suggesting adequate CsA-induced renal tubular injury. Urinary NGAL excretion also increased significantly in the CsA group. Conversely, apelin attenuated CsA-induced tubular injury and had no effect on urinary NGAL excretion. In histopathologic examination, the apelin-treated group had lower tubulo-interstitial injury scores compared with those in the CsA group. Regarding the effects of apelin, our results indicate that apelin provides protection against CsA-induced tubular injury by activating nitric oxide and/or the NFATc1 pathway. Notably, we also found that CsA inhibits renal glucose reabsorption by reducing Na+-K+ ATPase expression and that apelin reverses reduced renal glucose reabsorption by CsA in tubular cells. CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrates the renoprotective effect of apelin against CsA-induced renal tubular toxicity and provides novel insights into the effects of CsA and apelin on renal tubular cells.

Previous studies show that both activin and Bmp4 act as crucial mesenchymal odontogenic signals during early tooth development. Remarkably, mice lacking activin-ßA ( Inhba-/-) and mice with neural crest-specific inactivation of Bmp4 ( Bmp4ncko/ncko) both exhibit bud-stage developmental arrest of the mandibular molar tooth germs while their maxillary molar tooth germs completed morphogenesis. In this study, we found that, whereas expression of Inhba and Bmp4 in the developing tooth mesenchyme is independent of each other, Bmp4ncko/nckoInhba-/- compound mutant mice exhibit early developmental arrest of all tooth germs. Moreover, genetic inactivation of Osr2, a negative regulator of the odontogenic function of the Bmp4-Msx1 signaling pathway, rescues mandibular molar morphogenesis in Inhba-/- embryos. We recently reported that Osr2 and the Bmp4-Msx1 pathway control the bud-to-cap transition of tooth morphogenesis through antagonistic regulation of expression of secreted Wnt antagonists, including Dkk2 and Sfrp2, in the developing tooth mesenchyme. We show here that expression of Dkk2 messenger RNAs was significantly upregulated and expanded into the tooth bud mesenchyme in Inhba-/- embryos in comparison with wild-type littermates. Furthermore, in utero treatment with either lithium chloride, an agonist of canonical Wnt signaling, or the DKK inhibitor IIIC3a rescued mandibular molar tooth morphogenesis in Inhba-/- embryos. Together with our finding that the developing mandibular molar tooth bud mesenchyme expresses significantly higher levels of Dkk2 than the developing maxillary molar tooth mesenchyme, these data indicate that Bmp4 and activin signaling pathways converge on activation of the Wnt signaling pathway to promote tooth morphogenesis through the bud-to-cap transition and that the differential effects of loss of activin or Bmp4 signaling on maxillary and mandibular molar tooth morphogenesis are mainly due to the differential expression of Wnt antagonists, particularly Dkk2, in the maxillary and mandibular tooth mesenchyme.

OBJECTIVE: Mesiodens is the most common type of supernumerary tooth which includes a population prevalence of 0.15%-1.9%. Alongside evidence that the condition is heritable, mutations in single genes have been reported in few human supernumerary tooth cases. Gene sequencing methods in tradition way are time-consuming and labor-intensive, whereas next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics are cost-effective for large samples and target sizes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We describe the application of a targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) and bioinformatics approach to samples from 17 mesiodens patients. Subjects were diagnosed on the basis of panoramic radiograph. A total of 101 candidate genes which were captured custom genes were sequenced on the Illumina HiSeq 2500. Multistep bioinformatics processing was performed including variant identification, base calling, and in silico analysis of putative disease-causing variants. RESULTS: Targeted capture identified 88 non-synonymous, rare, exonic variants involving 42 of the 101 candidate genes. Moreover, we investigated gene co-occurrence relationships between the genomic alterations and identified 88 significant relationships among 18 most recurrent driver alterations. CONCLUSION: Our search for co-occurring genetic alterations revealed that such alterations interact cooperatively to drive mesiodens. We discovered a gene co-occurrence network in mesiodens patients with functionally enriched gene groups in the sonic hedgehog (SHH), bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP), and wingless integrated (WNT) signaling pathways.

Arsenic (As) is widely distributed in the environment, and humans can be exposed to As from various sources such as air, water, soil, and food. This study was performed to evaluate the As exposure levels in Korean adults by measuring total As in urine and its relation with the consumption of seafood, a favorite food in Korea. A total of 2077 adults were the study subjects; they ranged in age from 19 to 83, and they were recruited by probability sampling stratified by area, sex, and age. None of the subjects had been exposed to As occupationally. We collected information about the demographic characteristics, lifestyles, and food consumption of study subjects using a questionnaire and followed urine sampling. Diet was assessed in individual interviews using the 24-h recall method. Total As in urine was analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (PerkinElmer NEXION 300S; Concord, Ontario, Canada). The geometric mean concentration of total As in urine was observed to be 97.6 µg/L and was higher in males (103.9 µg/L) than in females (93.0 µg/L). Total As levels in urine were affected by sex, age, seafood intake, and geographic location. In this study, total As in urine was positively correlated with fish and shellfish consumption, and was mainly determined by As intake through fish and shellfish/grains/flavors. These findings suggest that seafood consumption might be a major contributor to urinary As levels in Korean adults.
