RESUMEN

This study observed the temperature changes in the pulp chamber during tooth preparation for a complete crown. Twelve extracted, morphologically intact human teeth were chosen: four canines, four premolars, and four molars. Six teeth, two of each, were cooled during preparation with an air-water spray; the remaining six were air-cooled. Minimal reduction of dentin using an air-water spray coolant resulted in a lowered temperature in the pulp chamber, mainly with the cross-grooved TDA diamond stones. The application of an air coolant resulted in a temperature rise in the pulp chamber.

RESUMEN

After reviewing the successive phases of lithogenesis, from dyschylia to outright calculosis, the clinico-epidemiological data on 400 cases of salivary calculosis with incidence according to location (94% submandibular, with 72% intraductal calculi), sex (70% male), age (86% between the second and fifth decades), concomitant pathologies (diabetes mellitus in 25% of cases, arterial hypertension in 20% of cases, chronic hepatopathies in 10% of cases) are presented. The morphological and microstructural aspects of the calculi, observed in polarised light under the optical microscope are reported. The scanty quantity of inorganic tissue contained and the presence of multiple and multidirectional growth nuclei in every calculus examined are pointed out.

RESUMEN

The incidence of endotoxemia (with limulus assay) in a group of patients undergoing dental extraction of both normal and diseased teeth was determined. Transient endotoxemia was found in 7 caes, without incidence of bacteremia.

RESUMEN

In order to ascertain the damaging effects on the glandular parenchyma and excretory system of the major salivary glands of sialography using iodate contrast media in an oily vehicle, experiments have been carried out on a group of dogs. Among other compounds, Lipiodol UF and Urovison were used, the former oil-based and the latter water-based. Histological slides of the injected gland made three and four weeks afterwards showed in one animal only the presence of a periductal infiltrate and an intracanalicular formation of hyaline thrombotic type that was not easy to interpret. Lipiodol UF was employed in this case. Comparing these results with the literature, it is concluded that Lipiodol is an irritant, especially if it passes beyond the salivary excretory tree, but this is not enough to have it banned absolutely. Contraindications are reported and the need for correct technique stressed.

RESUMEN

Oedema due to postoperative or post-traumatic infection or injury is noted in odontostomatological patients and its symptoms require prompt treatment. A new anti-inflammatory drug (Carudol) was experimented in association with antibiotics in two groups of patients, one admitted for diseases of the mouth, the other for surgery. Either 300 mg capsules or 425 mg suppositories were used. The results obtained were significant when compared to those offered by other anti-inflammatory drugs.
