RESUMEN

The chiral induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect, in which the structural chirality of a material determines the preference for the transmission of electrons with one spin orientation over that of the other, is emerging as a design principle for creating next-generation spintronic devices. CISS implies that the spin preference of chiral structures persists upon injection of pure spin currents and can act as a spin analyzer without the need for a ferromagnet. Here, we report an anomalous spin current absorption in chiral metal oxides that manifests a colossal anisotropic nonlocal Gilbert damping with a maximum-to-minimum ratio of up to 1000%. A twofold symmetry of the damping is shown to result from differential spin transmission and backscattering that arise from chirality-induced spin splitting along the chiral axis. These studies reveal the rich interplay of chirality and spin dynamics and identify how chiral materials can be implemented to direct the transport of spin current.

AbstractTorpor, the temporary reduction of metabolic rate and body temperature, is a common energy-saving strategy in endotherms. Because of their small body size and energetically demanding life histories, hummingbirds have proven useful for understanding when and why endotherms use torpor. Previous studies of torpor in hummingbirds have been largely limited to tropical montane species or long-distance migrants that regularly experience challenging thermal conditions. Comparatively little is known, however, about the use of torpor in hummingbirds of the lowland tropics, where relatively high and stable year-round temperatures may at least partially negate the need for torpor. To fill this knowledge gap, we tested for the occurrence of torpor in tropical lowland hummingbirds (n=37 individuals of six species) from central Panama. In controlled experimental conditions simulating the local temperature regime, all six species used torpor to varying degrees and entered torpor at high ambient temperatures (i.e., ≥28°C), indicating that hummingbirds from the thermally stable lowland tropics regularly use torpor. Torpor reduced overnight mass loss, with individuals that spent more time in torpor losing less body mass during temperature experiments. Body mass was the best predictor of torpor depth and duration among and within species-smaller species and individuals tended to use torpor more frequently and enter deeper torpor. Average mass loss in our experiments (∼8%-10%) was greater than that reported in studies of hummingbirds from higher elevation sites (∼4%). We therefore posit that the energetic benefits accrued from torpor may be limited by relatively high nighttime temperatures in the lowland tropics, although further studies are needed to test this hypothesis.

Extracellular matrix stiffening is a quintessential feature of cartilage aging, a leading cause of knee osteoarthritis. Yet, the downstream molecular and cellular consequences of age-related biophysical alterations are poorly understood. Here, we show that epigenetic regulation of α-Klotho represents a novel mechanosensitive mechanism by which the aged extracellular matrix influences chondrocyte physiology. Using mass spectrometry proteomics followed by a series of genetic and pharmacological manipulations, we discovered that increased matrix stiffness drove Klotho promoter methylation, downregulated Klotho gene expression, and accelerated chondrocyte senescence in vitro. In contrast, exposing aged chondrocytes to a soft matrix restored a more youthful phenotype in vitro and enhanced cartilage integrity in vivo. Our findings demonstrate that age-related alterations in extracellular matrix biophysical properties initiate pathogenic mechanotransductive signaling that promotes Klotho promoter methylation and compromises cellular health. These findings are likely to have broad implications even beyond cartilage for the field of aging research.

While stress may be a potential mechanism by which childhood threat and deprivation influence mental health, few studies have considered specific stress-related white matter pathways, such as the stria terminalis (ST) and medial forebrain bundle (MFB). Our goal was to examine the relationships between childhood adversity and ST and MFB structural integrity and whether these pathways may provide a link between childhood adversity and affective symptoms and disorders. Participants were young adults (n = 100) with a full distribution of maltreatment history and affective symptom severity. Threat was determined by measures of childhood abuse and repeated traumatic events. Socioeconomic deprivation (SED) was determined by a measure of childhood socioeconomic status (parental education). Participants underwent diffusion spectrum imaging. Human Connectome Project data was used to perform ST and MFB tractography; these tracts were used as ROIs to extract generalized fractional anisotropy (gFA) from each participant. Childhood threat was associated with ST gFA, such that greater threat was associated with less ST gFA. SED was also associated with ST gFA, however, conversely to threat, greater SED was associated with greater ST gFA. Additionally, threat was negatively associated with MFB gFA, and MFB gFA was negatively associated with post-traumatic stress symptoms. Our results suggest that childhood threat and deprivation have opposing influences on ST structural integrity, providing new evidence that the context of childhood adversity may have an important influence on its neurobiological effects, even on the same structure. Further, the MFB may provide a novel link between childhood threat and affective symptoms.

The mechanical properties of individual multiwall boron nitride nanotubes (MWBNNTs) synthesized by a growth-vapor-trapping chemical vapor deposition method are investigated by a three-point bending technique via atomic force microscopy. Multiple locations on suspended tubes are probed in order to determine the boundary conditions of the supported tube ends. The bending moduli (EB) calculated for 20 tubes with diameters ranging from 18 to 58 nm confirm the exceptional mechanical properties of MWBNNTs, with an average EB of 760 ± 30 GPa. For the first time, the bending moduli of MWBNNTs are observed to increase with decreasing diameter, ranging from 100 ± 20 GPa to as high as 1800 ± 300 GPa. This diameter dependence is evaluated by Timoshenko beam theory. The Young's modulus and shear modulus were determined to be 1800 ± 300 and 7 ± 1 GPa, respectively, for a trimmed data set of 16 tubes. The low shear modulus of MWBNNTs is the reason for the detected diameter-dependent bending modulus and is likely due to the presence of interwall shearing between the crystalline and faceted helical nanotube structures of MWBNNTs.

This work explores the sensitization of luminescent lanthanide Tb(3+) and Eu(3+) cations by the electronic structure of zinc sulfide (ZnS) semiconductor nanoparticles. Excitation spectra collected while monitoring the lanthanide emission bands reveal that the ZnS nanoparticles act as an antenna for the sensitization of Tb(3+) and Eu(3+). The mechanism of lanthanide ion luminescence sensitization is rationalized in terms of an energy and charge transfer between trap sites and is based on a semiempirical model, proposed by Dorenbos and co-workers (Dorenbos, P. J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 2003, 15, 8417-8434; J. Lumin. 2004, 108, 301-305; J. Lumin. 2005, 111, 89-104. Dorenbos, P.; van der Kolk, E. Appl. Phys. Lett. 2006, 89, 061122-1-061122-3; Opt. This model implies that the mechanisms of luminescence sensitization of Tb(3+) and Eu(3+) in ZnS nanoparticles are different; namely, Tb(3+) acts as a hole trap, whereas Eu(3+) acts as an electron trap. Further testing of this model is made by extending the studies from ZnS nanoparticles to other II-VI semiconductor materials; namely, CdSe, CdS, and ZnSe.

We developed a straightforward method to form non-close-packed highly ordered fcc direct and inverse opal silica photonic crystals. We utilize an electrostatically self assembled crystalline colloidal array (CCA) template formed by monodisperse, highly charged polystyrene particles. We then polymerize a hydrogel around the CCA (PCCA) and condense silica to form a highly ordered silica impregnated (siPCCA) photonic crystal. Heating at 450 degrees C removes the organic polymer leaving a silica inverse opal structure. By altering the colloidal particle concentration we independently control the particle spacing and the wall thickness of the inverse opal photonic crystals. This allows us to control the optical dielectric constant modulation in order to optimize the diffraction; the dielectric constant modulation is controlled independently of the photonic crystal periodicity. These fcc photonic crystals are better ordered than typical close-packed photonic crystals because their self assembly utilizes soft electrostatic repulsive potentials. We show that colloidal particle size and charge polydispersity has modest impact on ordering, in contrast to that for close-packed crystals.

BACKGROUND: The sensitivity of coronary calcification by electron beam tomography (EBT) for the detection of coronary atherosclerosis is well-established. Combining the anatomic information of EBT with the functional information of stress testing might reduce the high false-positive result rate seen with treadmill stress test (TMST) alone. No studies have reported the additive value of a negative EBT result (no coronary calcium) for excluding obstructive coronary artery disease (OCAD) in patients with a positive TMST result. This study evaluated the negative predictive value and potential clinical utility of EBT to identify patients with a falsely abnormal TMST. METHODS: A coronary calcium score was determined by EBT for 153 symptomatic patients who underwent coronary angiography because of a positive TMST. The sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values of EBT were determined. A multiple logistic regression analysis compared conventional cardiac risk factors with coronary calcification by EBT for predicting OCAD. A receiver operating characteristic curve was generated plotting sensitivity versus false-positive rate. RESULTS: The false-positive rate of the TMST compared with angiography was 27% (41 of 153). The sensitivity of a nonzero coronary calcium score for OCAD was 98% (110 of 112), with a negative predictive value of 93%. According to multiple logistic regression, coronary calcification by EBT was a stronger predictor of OCAD than any conventional cardiac risk factor. EBT calcium added incremental value to the results of the TMST. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis found an area under the curve of 0.91 (P <.001). CONCLUSIONS: The absence of coronary calcification by EBT reliably identified patients with a false-positive TMST result. The combination of EBT with TMST is a potentially useful diagnostic strategy to reduce the number of false-positive test results.

OBJECTIVES: The study was done to evaluate whether ethnic differences exist in the prevalence of coronary artery calcification (CAC), and to determine whether differences in calcification correlate with the degree of coronary obstruction. BACKGROUND: Electron beam tomography (EBT) can be used to quantitate the amount of CAC and assist in prognostication of future cardiac events. It is unclear whether ethnic differences in coronary mortality are related to differences in the prevalence of coronary obstruction and CAC. METHODS: A total of 782 symptomatic subjects underwent both EBT and angiography. A 50% luminal narrowing defined an angiographic obstruction. RESULTS: We observed substantial ethnic differences in prevalence of both CAC and angiographic stenosis. In whites (n = 453), prevalence of CAC (score >0) was 84%, and significant obstruction on angiogram was 71%. Compared with whites, blacks (n = 108) had a significantly lower prevalence of CAC (62%, p < 0.001) and angiographic disease (49%, p < 0.01). Hispanics (n = 177) also had a lower prevalence of CAC (71%, p < 0.001) and angiographic obstruction (58%, p < 0.01). Asians (n = 44) were not significantly different in regard to CAC (73%, p = 0.06) or angiographic stenosis (64%, p = 0.30). These ethnic differences remained after simultaneously controlling (by use of multiple logistic regression) for age, gender and cardiac risk factors. CONCLUSIONS: As compared with whites, blacks and Hispanics had significantly lower prevalence of CAC and obstructive coronary disease. Ethnic differences in risk-factor profiles do not explain these differences. This study demonstrated that whites have a higher atherosclerotic burden than blacks and Hispanics, independent of risk-factor differences among symptomatic patients referred for angiography.
