RESUMEN

The Hanwoo traceability system currently utilizes 11 dinucleotide repeat microsatellite (MS) markers. However, dinucleotide repeat markers are known to have a high incidence of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) artifacts, such as stutter bands, which can complicate the accurate reading of alleles. In this study, we examined the polymorphisms of the 11 dinucleotide repeat MS markers currently employed in traceability systems. Additionally, we explored four trinucleotide repeat MS markers and one tetranucleotide repeat MS marker in a sample of 1,106 Hanwoo cattle. We also assessed the potential utility of the tri- and tetranucleotide repeat MS markers. The polymorphic information content (PIC) of the five tri- and tetranucleotide repeat markers ranged from 0.663 to 0.767 (mean: 0.722), sufficiently polymorphic and slightly higher than the mean (0.716) of the current 11 dinucleotide repeat markers. Using all 16 markers, the mean PIC was 0.718. The estimated probability of identity (PI) was 3.13 × 10-12 using the 11 dinucleotide repeat markers, 7.03 × 10-6 using the five tri- and tetranucleotide repeat markers, and 2.39 × 10-17 using all 16 markers; the respective PIhalf-sibs values were 2.69 × 10-9, 1.29 × 10-4, and 3.42 × 10-13; and the respective PIsibs values were 3.89 × 10-5, 9.6 × 10-3, and 3.69 × 10-7. The probability of exclusion1 (PE1) was 0.999864 for the 11 dinucleotide repeat markers, 0.981141 for five of the tri- and tetranucleotide repeat markers, and > 0.99 for all 16 markers; the respective PE2 values were 0.994632, 0.901369, and > 0.99; and the respective PE3 values were 0.998702, > 0.99, and > 0.99. The five investigated tri- and tetranucleotide repeat MS markers can be used in combination with the 11 existing MS markers to improve the accuracy of individual identification and paternity testing in Hanwoo.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Despite a plethora of research on the topic, there is still no solid evidence that pharmacological treatment actually reduces the risk of suicide in patients with mental illness. In this study, we aimed to assess the effect of psychotropic medications on suicidal ideation in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BPD) in two age groups: less than 25 years and 25 years and older. METHODS: We analyzed 312 patients with mood disorders with current suicidal thoughts or recent suicide attempts. We followed the participants from baseline for 6 months and assessed changes in suicidal ideation with Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS). The effect of psychotropic drug administration on suicidal ideation over time was analyzed using a linear mixed model. RESULTS: In patients aged 25 years and older with mood disorders, suicidal ideation was more severe when using psychotropic drugs than when not using them. However, suicidal ideation decreased rapidly over time. The time-dependent reduction in suicidal ideation was accelerated when using antidepressants and sedatives/hypnotics in adult MDD, and when using mood stabilizers in adult BPD. However, this effect was not observed in participants aged less than 25 years. CONCLUSION: Adequate psychotropic medication may reduce suicidal ideation in patients with mood disorders aged 25 years and older. Additional research on psychotropic drugs is needed to effectively reduce the risk of suicide among children and adolescents with mood disorders.

RESUMEN

Adipose tissue, both intricate and fundamental to physiological functions, comprises cell types, including adipocytes, pivotal in secreting bioactive peptides known as 'adipokines.' Apelin (APLN), Visfatin (VSFTN), and Irisin (IRSN) are novel adipokines involved in regulating energy, carbohydrate, protein, and lipid metabolism. APLN acts as an endogenous ligand for G-protein-coupled receptors, VSFTN is essential in nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) biosynthesis, and IRSN is released from skeletal muscle and adipose tissues. Their influence spans various physiological domains, including insulin resistance and sensitivity, cardiovascular functions, angiogenesis, and reproductive systems. This review focuses on the potential roles of APLN, VSFTN, and IRSN in energy regulation mechanisms related to farm animal production. Despite accumulating evidence of their significance, comprehensive understanding is still emerging, with most studies based on model organisms. Thus, there's a pressing need for targeted research on farm animals. Addressing these knowledge gaps could pave the way for improved health strategies, reproductive efficiency, and productivity in farm animals. Future research should focus on understanding the multifaceted interactions of these adipokines and their implications for promoting sustainable and effective animal production.

RESUMEN

Hot flashes (HF) are a common adverse event of prolonged tamoxifen use in women with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer, impacting psychiatric health and quality of life. While desvenlafaxine does not interact with tamoxifen, its efficacy and safety in breast cancer patients remain unstudied. This phase 3, four-week, multi-center, three-arm, parallel-group, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial investigated the efficacy and safety of desvenlafaxine for treating HF in women with breast cancer taking tamoxifen, assessing potential differential effects in patients with psychiatric and inflammatory conditions. Between December 2017 and February 2019, 57 women aged 19 or older, regularly taking tamoxifen as adjuvant therapy, experiencing moderate-to-severe HFs for more than a month, were randomized to receive desvenlafaxine 50 mg/day (D-50), desvenlafaxine 100 mg/day (D-100), or placebo for four weeks. The primary endpoint was the change rate in HF scores over four weeks, with adverse events as a secondary endpoint. Both desvenlafaxine arms demonstrated greater HF score reductions compared to placebo: D-50 (2.20 points/week, 95% CI: 0.71, 3.68) and D-100 (2.34 points/week, 95% CI: 0.92, 3.76). Notably, D-50 arm showed significantly greater efficacy in patients with depression or elevated inflammation. Desvenlafaxine offers an effective and safe treatment regimen for HF in women with breast cancer taking tamoxifen. The presence of depression and inflammation may guide optimal desvenlafaxine dosing. RESUMEN

N-Nitrosamines (NAs) pose a threat to food safety due to their carcinogenic and mutagenic properties. In this study, we developed and validated a QuEChERS-based LC-MS/MS method for the simultaneous analysis of 11 NAs in 74 processed fish meat, processed meat, and salted fish products. Sample preparation was optimized by screening two versions of QuEChERS buffer, four extraction methods, and eight purification methods. The optimal analytical approach was validated for three product categories in terms of linearity, matrix effects, accuracy, and precision. Satisfactory precision and accuracy were demonstrated, with relative recoveries of 70-120% for the 11 NAs. The limits of detection for fish meat, processed meat, and salted fish products were 0.12-7.50, 0.12-4.14, and 0.10-7.81 ng·g-1, respectively. Among the 11 NAs, nine were detected in all 74 samples. This methodology could be applied to monitor NA levels to ensure the safety and quality of food products.

RESUMEN

This study investigated the transcriptomic responses of subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) and liver in newborn Hanwoo calves subjected to maternal overnutrition during mid- to late gestation. Eight Hanwoo cows were randomly assigned to control and treatment groups. The treatment group received a diet of 4.5 kg of concentrate and 6.5 kg of rice straw daily, resulting in intake levels of 8.42 kg DMI, 5.69 kg TDN, and 0.93 kg CP-higher than the control group (6.07 kg DMI, 4.07 kg TDN, and 0.65 kg CP), with respective NEm values of 9.56 Mcal and 6.68 Mcal. Following birth, newly born calves were euthanized humanely as per ethical guidelines, and SAT and liver samples from newborn calves were collected for RNA extraction and analysis. RNA sequencing identified 192 genes that were differentially expressed in the SAT (17 downregulated and 175 upregulated); notably, HSPA6 emerged as the most significantly upregulated gene in the SAT and as the singular upregulated gene in the liver (adj-p value < 0.05). Additionally, differential gene expression analysis highlighted extensive changes across genes associated with adipogenesis, fibrogenesis, and stress response. The functional enrichment pathway and protein-protein interaction (PPI) unraveled the intricate networks and biological processes impacted by overnutrition, including extracellular matrix organization, cell surface receptor signaling, and the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway. These findings underscore maternal overnutrition's substantial influence on developmental pathways, suggesting profound cellular modifications with potential lasting effects on health and productivity. Despite the robust insights that are provided, the study's limitations (sample size) underscore the necessity for further research.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: As the number of adolescent cancer survivors increases, detailed and effective healthcare policies on adolescent cancer survivors returning to school and workplace are needed. The study aimed to explore the perception of healthy adolescents on cancer and adolescent cancer survivors. METHODS: This study conducted a face-to-face cross-sectional study in the Republic of Korea in 2021 on adolescent selected through proportional population allocation sampling by sex, age, and region. According to research questions, survey questionnaire organized and collected data on adolescents' perceptions of cancer, differences in perceptions from tuberculosis, measles, asthma, perceptions of adolescent cancer survivors, and health information sources that led to these perceptions. RESULTS: Of the total 500 adolescents, less than 10% of healthy adolescents responded that cancer is contagious, while three-quarters of the respondents believed that cancer is preventable. In addition, compared to tuberculosis, measles, and asthma, they recognized differences by disease. The majority of healthy adolescents embraced community values advocating the return of adolescent cancer survivors to school and work. However, they expressed a negative view of the situation in which adolescent cancer survivors could interact with them as classmates or co-workers. Adolescents mainly obtained health information on cancer from the Internet and television, CONCLUSIONS: The perception of healthy adolescents on cancer was relatively accurate; however, they have dualistic thinking involving living with adolescent cancer survivors. To facilitate reintegration of adolescent cancer survivors into daily lives, education is needed for healthy adolescents to live with cancer survivors.

RESUMEN

In Jeju Island, South Korea, a patient who consumed raw pig products had subdural empyema, which led to meningitis, sepsis, and status epilepticus. We identified Streptococcus suis from blood and the subdural empyema. This case illustrates the importance of considering dietary habits in similar clinical assessments to prevent misdiagnosis.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Since identified in December 2019, the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had a global impact on medical resource use and costs for patients with cancer in South Korea. This study aimed to identify the medical use and costs among patients with cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic, to predict these patterns in South Korea in the future. METHODS: We conducted a secondary claims data analysis using the National Health Insurance Service database for the calendar period of 2019-2020. Monthly relative percent changes in cancer incidence, medical use, and billing costs for medical care utilization by cancer type were calculated. Then, the medical use and costs after January 2020 were predicted using a time series model with data before the COVID-19 outbreak (2014-2019). RESULTS: The incidence of cancer diagnoses has seen a notable decline since the outbreak of the COVID-19 in 2020 as compared to 2019. Despite the impact of COVID-19, there hasn't been a distinct decline in outpatient utilization when compared to inpatient utilization. While medical expenses for both inpatient and outpatient visits have slightly increased, the number of patients treated for cancer has decreased significantly compared to the previous year. In June 2020, overall outpatient costs experienced the highest increase (21.1%), while individual costs showed the most significant decrease (-4.9%) in June 2020. Finally, the number of hospitalisations and outpatient visits increased slightly from June-July in 2020, reducing the difference between the actual and predicted values. The decrease in the number of inpatient hospitalisations (-22~-6%) in 2020 was also high. CONCLUSIONS: The overall use of medical services by patients with cancer decreased in 2020 compared with that in the pre-COVID-19 pandemic period. In the future, the government should consider how to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, and establish permanent health policies for patients with cancer.

RESUMEN

A for-cause biopsy is performed to diagnose the cause of allograft dysfunction in kidney transplantation. We occasionally encounter ambiguous biopsy results in symptomatic kidney transplant recipients. Yet, the allograft survival outcome in symptomatic recipients with nonspecific allograft biopsy findings remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of nonspecific for-cause biopsy findings in symptomatic kidney transplant recipients. We retrospectively collected records from 773 kidney transplant recipients between January 2008 and October 2021. The characteristics of transplant recipients with nonspecific findings in the first for-cause biopsy were analyzed. Nonspecific allograft biopsy findings were defined as other biopsy findings excluding rejection, borderline rejection, calcineurin inhibitor toxicity, infection, glomerulonephritis, and diabetic nephropathy. The graft outcome was compared between recipients who had never undergone a for-cause biopsy and those who had a first for-cause biopsy with nonspecific findings. The graft survival in recipients with nonspecific for-cause biopsy findings was comparable to that in recipients who did not require the for-cause biopsy before and after propensity score matching. Even in symptomatic kidney transplant recipients, nonspecific allograft biopsy findings might not be a poor prognostic factor for allograft survival compared to recipients who did not require the for-cause biopsy.

RESUMEN

Background: Trans fatty acids (TFAs) are unsaturated fatty acids, with vaccenic acid (VA) and elaidic acid (EA) being the major constituents. While VA has been associated with beneficial effects on health and anti-cancer properties, EA is found in hardened vegetable oils and is linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a novel method for the quantitative measurement of VA and EA, aiming to accurately analyze individual TFA and apply it for the assessment of products containing TFAs. Methods: The ratio of VA to EA (V/E ratio) was evaluated using a silver ion cartridge (SIC) solid phase extraction method removing cis-fatty acids (cis-FAs). Additionally, comparative analysis of the V/E ratio was conducted by the two methods (SIC treatment and untreated) using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography combined with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-TOFMS). Results: The removal efficiency of cis-FAs was greater than 97.8%. However, the total TFA contents were not so different from SIC treatment. Moreover, this approach not only allowed for a more precise determination of the V/E ratio but also revealed a significant distinction between natural trans fatty acids (N-TFAs) and hydrogenated trans fatty acids (H-TFAs). Conclusion: Therefore, the SIC coupled to the GC × GC-TOFMS presented in this study could be applied to discriminate N-TFA and H-TFA contents in dairy and fatty foods.

RESUMEN

Since the first description of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) as a series of 12 patients in 1967 by Ashbaugh et al.1 , it still remains a major public health problem that incurs high health care costs and causes major mortality in the intensive care unit (ICU) despite improvements in outcomes in the last two decades. ARDS refers to the occurrence of severe hypoxemia that was not corrected by oxygen treatment and is characterized by heterogeneous acute lung inflammation with increased permeability of the alveolar-capillary membrane, resulting in the development of exudate within the alveolar space, damage due to activated neutrophils and cytokines, and abnormalities of surfactant and the coagulation system2 . The definition also recently changes as the Berlin criteria3 , which was modified to the original American-European Consensus Conference definitions4 and novel clinical trial designs in ARDS may anticipate a new era of successful therapies. Although over the past decades, there has been a remarkable development in the therapeutic approach and management of critically ill patients with ARDS, the mortality of patients with ARDS is unacceptably high, up to 40%5 . In Korea, it has been reported that 79 patients with ARDS were admitted to the ICUs of 28 university hospitals all over the country within 1 month, July 2009, and 45 of those patients died, resulting in a mortality rate of 57%6 . Also, until now there is no wellstated clinical practice guideline for intensivists about ARDS, especially focused on the critical care including applying mechanical ventilation until now. Herein, we report the recommendations and suggestions of how to manage mechanically ventilated patients with or without ARDS
