RESUMEN

This study aims to evaluate the ecosystem services of Upo wetland, one of the best-known Ramsar sites in Korea, reflecting the characteristics of the ecological assets and local knowledges in the area. Application of spatial text-mining begins with collecting local perceptions and knowledge of residents on the 17 ecological assets of Upo site and surrounding area. Our results identified five important ecosystem services: flood control during heavy rainfall, water purification by aquatic plants, cultural and natural heritages, agricultural products and water provision for crop cultivation. GIS created a map where these ecosystem services were linked to the locations of 17 ecological assets. This map showed which ecosystem service is associated with particular ecological assets and their characteristics from residents' perspectives. Mapping local knowledge using the spatial text-mining is able to identify multi-functional bases which provide various ecosystem services in the same location simultaneously. Identification of multi-functional bases can provide information for local government to design an effective and comprehensive management plan considering physical-cultural geography of ecosystem services.

RESUMEN

Oocyte quality is essential for reproductive capacity, but it rapidly declines with age. In addition to aging, maternal nutrition is a major concern in maintaining oocyte quality. Gliadin, a major component of gluten, causes gluten toxicity, which has been reported in a variety of gluten-related disorders. The basis of gluten toxicity in reproduction is being understood using simple animal models such as Caenorhabditis elegans. In this study, we examined the effects of gliadin peptide (GP; amino acids 151-170) intake on oocyte quality control in C. elegans. We found that GP intake impaired oocyte quality through chromosomal aberrations and mitochondrial oxidative stress, which was suppressed by antioxidant treatment. The reduced oocyte quality by GP intake consequently increased embryonic lethality. Furthermore, the expression of oxidative stress-responding genes prdx-3 and gst-4 was significantly increased by GP intake. The increased DAF-16 activity by GP intake suggests that DAF-16 is a possible transactivator of these antioxidant genes. Taken together, GP intake reduced reproductive capacity in C. elegans by decreasing oocyte quality and increasing embryonic lethality through mitochondrial oxidative stress.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To compare clinical outcomes of a new monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) with enhanced intermediate function and an extended depth-of-focus (EDoF) IOL. SETTING: Asan Medical Center, Seoul, Korea. DESIGN: Nonrandomized prospective comparative case series. METHODS: Patients presenting for cataract surgery and meeting all inclusion and exclusion criteria were implanted with a new monofocal IOL with enhanced intermediate function (Tecnis Eyhance ICB00) or an EDoF IOL (Tecnis Symfony ZXR00) bilaterally. Uncorrected (UDVA), uncorrected intermediate (UIVA), uncorrected near (UNVA), and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), defocus curves, and contrast sensitivity were compared after 3 months. Patients were administered questionnaires regarding visual symptoms, spectacle independence, overall satisfaction, and lens recommendations. RESULTS: 24 patients (48 eyes) were enrolled in the Eyhance group and 20 patients (40 eyes) in the Symfony group. Monocular and binocular UDVA, UIVA, and CDVA were similar in the 2 groups. Monocular UNVA and spectacle independence for near distance were better in the Symfony group, whereas binocular UNVA did not differ significantly in the 2 groups. Contrast sensitivity, glare and halo, satisfaction, and recommendation rates were similar in the 2 groups. Although some dissatisfaction and severe glare and halo were reported in the Symfony group, none of these was reported in the Eyhance group. CONCLUSIONS: Bilateral implantation of the Eyhance ICB00 IOL provided comparable clinical performances as bilateral implantation of the Symfony ZXR00 IOL. Binocular UNVA was similar, although spectacle independence was higher in the Symfony group, but this was at the expense of more glare and halos.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To compare the anti-inflammatory activity of preoperatively applied eyedrops, as determined by cytokine concentrations in aqueous humor collected during surgery in patients undergoing femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery. METHODS: A total of 120 patients undergoing femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery were randomly assigned to four groups of 30 patients each. Groups were administered 0.1% fluorometholone eyedrops, 0.45% ketorolac tromethamine eyedrops, both 0.1% fluorometholone and 0.45% ketorolac tromethamine eyedrops, or no eyedrops. Eyedrops were instilled 1 h, 20 min, and just before surgery. After anterior capsulotomy and nuclear fragmentation using a femtosecond laser, 0.1 cc aqueous humor was obtained using a needle and syringe. Cytokine and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) concentrations were quantitatively determined. RESULTS: The 120 patients included 59 men and 61 women, of mean age 65.02 years. The mean interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) concentrations after treatment did not differ significantly in the four groups. The average interleukin-8 (IL-8) concentrations were significantly lower in the fluorometholone (4.80 pg/mL), ketorolac tromethamine (4.84 pg/mL), and fluorometholone + ketorolac tromethamine (4.68 pg/mL) groups than in the control group (6.83 pg/mL). Furthermore, the average PGE2 concentrations were significantly lower in the ketorolac tromethamine (270.04 pg/mL) and fluorometholone + ketorolac tromethamine (239.00 pg/mL) groups, but not in the fluorometholone (393.16 pg/mL) group, than in the control group (472.36 pg/mL). CONCLUSION: Preoperative fluorometholone instillation reduced IL-8, and ketorolac tromethamine instillation reduced IL-8 and PGE2, in aqueous humor of patients undergoing femtosecond laser surgery, with the combination of both eyedrops being more effective than either alone. RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical outcomes after bilateral mix-and-match cataract surgery using extended depth of focus (EDOF) and diffractive multifocal (DMF) intraocular lenses (IOLs). Setting. Asan Medical Center, Seoul, South Korea. DESIGN: Prospective clinical study. METHODS: Thirty-seven patients underwent TECNIS Symfony EDOF IOL (ZXR00) implantation in the dominant eye, and TECNIS +3.25 DMF IOL (ZLB00) implantation in the nondominant eye. Patients were followed up for 3 months; uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity (UDVA and CDVA), uncorrected intermediate and near visual acuity (UIVA and UNVA), contrast sensitivity, defocus curves, stereopsis, and patient satisfaction were assessed. RESULTS: At 3 months, the mean logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) of UDVA was 0.07 ± 0.09 in EDOF IOL eyes, 0.12 ± 0.11 in DMF IOL eyes, and 0.02 ± 0.05 in both eyes. UIVA was 0.11 ± 0.11 in EDOF IOL eyes, 0.16 ± 0.12 in DMF IOL eyes, and 0.04 ± 0.07 in both eyes. UNVA was 0.25 ± 0.15 in EDOF IOL eyes, 0.22 ± 0.16 in DMF IOL eyes, and 0.13 ± 0.13 in both eyes. Thirty patients (81.1%) were more than satisfied with near vision, and 8 patients (21.6%) complained of severe glare and halo. Spectacle independence for near vision was achieved in 34 patients (91.9%), and 31 patients (83.8%) had better than a 50-second arc of stereopsis. CONCLUSION: Mix-and-match cataract surgery with EDOF and DMF IOL implantation provided good visual outcomes for all distances. Additionally, excellent patient satisfaction was achieved with a high level of spectacle independence and acceptable photic phenomena.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the effects of lid debris debridement and meibomian gland expression (MGX) on extracellular matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) levels and clinical outcomes of moderate and severe MGD. METHODS: In this retrospective case series study, a total 48 eyes of 24 patients with moderate and severe MGD underwent one session of lid debris debridement using the BlephEx combined with MGX. We evaluated the tear film break-up time (TBUT), corneal and conjunctival fluorescein staining scores, Schirmer 1 test, biomicroscopic examination of lid margins and meibomian gland (MG), ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaire score, and extracellular MMP-9 levels using a point-of-care MMP-9 immunoassay device before and 4 weeks after lid debris debridement and MGX. Linear mixed model and generalized estimating equations model were used to evaluate possible differences. RESULTS: There were significant improvements in the TBUT (P = 0.002), SICCA and Oxford staining scores (all P < 0.001), lid margin telangiectasia (P < 0.001 for upper and lower eyelids), lid thickness (P < 0.001 for upper and lower eyelids), MG orifice plugging (P < 0.001 for upper and lower eyelids), meibum color (P = 0.026 for upper eyelid, P < 0.001 for lower eyelid), meibum consistency (P < 0.001 for upper and lower eyelids), meibum grade (P < 0.001), MGD stage (P < 0.001), and OSDI score (P = 0.002). MMP-9 immunoassay positivity rate significantly decreased from 83.3 to 50.0% 4 weeks after treatment (P = 0.014). CONCLUSIONS: In patients with moderate to severe MGD, lid debris debridement using the BlephEx combined with MGX improved clinical findings, subjective symptoms, meibomian gland function, along with ocular surface MMP-9 level. We hereby suggest lid debris debridement using BlephEx combined with MGX as an effective clinical strategy for treatment of moderate to severe MGD.

RESUMEN

Purpose: To test the hypothesis that ocular pigment in patients with oculodermal melanocytosis decreases myopia severity. Methods: Refractive and biometric parameters were measured and compared between pigmented eyes and non-pigmented contralateral eyes in oculodermal melanocytosis patients that underwent surgical ocular pigmentation removal. To assess pigmentation, the pigmentation score was measured in each quadrant of the sclera and added together for a cumulative score. For subgroup analyses, patients were categorized into three groups according to the severity of myopia in the non-pigmented eye. Results: Fifty-five patients (110 eyes) were included. Spherical power and spherical equivalent were significantly less myopic in pigmented eyes relative to contralateral non-pigmented eyes. The spherical powers of non-pigmented eyes were positively correlated with the difference in spherical power between contralateral eyes (r = 0.697, p < .001). The pigmentation scores of pigmented eyes were positively correlated with the ratio of myopia inhibition (r = 0.373, p = .005). In subgroup analyses, pigmented eyes exhibited significantly less myopic spherical powers and spherical equivalents than non-pigmented contralateral eyes in the moderate and high myopia groups. Pigmented eyes exhibited significantly shorter axial length than non-pigmented contralateral eyes in the high myopia group only. Conclusions: In patients with oculodermal melanocytosis, pigmented eyes exhibited less severe myopia relative to non-pigmented contralateral eyes. This suggested that ocular pigmentation inhibited myopic changes, potentially by blocking UV transmission. This study will be helpful in elucidating the mechanisms of myopic progression.

RESUMEN

The resident participatory ecosystem service assessment is a method for determining local situations through the ecological knowledge of residents who most closely experience changes in local ecosystems. This is an opportunity for residents to synthesize their environmental knowledge. It provides valuable research material for researchers, can be utilized as a pathway for civil servants to reflect residents' opinions on policy, and can help environmental organizations instill environmental awareness and develop environmental public opinions in residents. Despite the participation of various stakeholders in resident participatory ecosystem service assessment, discussions concerning their roles and the nature of cooperation have largely not borne fruit. This study ascertained opinions on the development of the resident participatory ecosystem service assessment from local residents, local universities and research institutes, and relevant civil servants who participated as stakeholders in environmental organizations in this assessment. Upon organizing the stakeholders' interests through text mining based on the Q methodology, results indicated that research groups were interested in utilizing research evaluation techniques of a participatory ecosystem services assessment. In contrast, environmental organizations and civil servants were interested in utilizing the assessment results for political application. These two groups agreed that it is important to periodically map and utilize the research results of resident participatory ecosystem service assessment. The South Korean case featured in this study indicated that research teams will have to do their utmost in technique development, as will civil servants and environmental organizations, in creating measures for policy application. All of these groups should first attempt to map the results of resident participation, thereby creating resources for research and policy application, and make advances toward governance for robust resident participatory ecosystem service assessment.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to evaluate astigmatic correction in patients with mild to moderate astigmatism after combined femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) and intrastromal arcuate keratotomy (ISAK), using vector analysis. This retrospective study included patients with corneal astigmatism of 0.5-3.0 diopters (D) who underwent FLACS and ISAK. Vector analyses of astigmatism were performed using the Alpins method, considering three vectors: target-induced astigmatism (TIA), surgically induced astigmatism (SIA), and difference vector (DV). Magnitude of error (ME), angle of error (AE), correction index (CI), and coefficient of adjustment (CA) were calculated. Subgroup analysis according to the axis of astigmatism, patient age, and white to white (WTW) diameter was conducted. In total, for the 79 eyes of 79 patients, the TIA was 1.21 ± 0.52 D, the SIA was 0.76 ± 0.53 D, and the DV was 0.86 ± 0.50 D. The ME (difference between SIA and TIA) was -0.46 ± 0.45 D, and the CI (ratio of SIA and TIA) was 0.62 ± 0.34; both these parameters demonstrated slight undercorrection. The CA (inverse of the CI) was 2.48 ± 2.61. The AE was 4.02° ± 28.7°, and the absolute AE was 21.7° ± 19.0°. In the univariate regression analyses to identify factors that affected the CI, there was a negative correlation between age and the CI (P=0.022). In conclusion, vector analysis after the combined FLACS and ISAK revealed slight undercorrection, regardless of the astigmatism meridian. The precision of the nomogram should be improved through long-term vector analysis for the results of arcuate keratotomy and through further research on the relationship between patient demographics and CI. Overall, this study has shown that FLACS and ISAK could reduce postoperative corneal astigmatism effectively and safely.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To evaluate the combined effect of intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy and meibomian gland expression on extracellular matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) levels and clinical outcomes of moderate and severe meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) treatment. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted on 45 eyes of 23 patients with moderate and severe MGD. Each eye underwent three IPL sessions and meibomian gland expression at 2-week intervals. In this study the evaluated parameters included tear film break-up time (TBUT), corneal and conjunctival fluorescein staining scores, biomicroscopic examination of lid margins and meibomian glands, ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaire score, and extracellular MMP-9 levels using the immunoassay device before and two weeks after the last treatment session. Linear mixed model and generalized estimating equations model were used to evaluate possible differences. RESULTS: There were significant improvements in TBUT (P < 0.001), SICCA ocular staining score (P = 0.008), Oxford staining score (P = 0.023), lid margin irregularity (P < 0.001 for upper and lower eyelids), lid thickness (P < 0.001 for upper and lower eyelids), meibomian gland plugging (P = 0.010 and P = 0.012 for upper and lower eyelids), meibum color (P = 0.044 and P < 0.001 for upper and lower eyelids), meibum consistency (P < 0.001 for upper and lower eyelids), MGD grade (P < 0.001), and OSDI questionnaire score (P < 0.001). Incidence of positive results for MMP-9 immunoassay significantly decreased from 84.0% to 56.0% (P = 0.031) after treatment. CONCLUSION: In patients with moderate to severe MGD, three sessions of IPL combined with meibomian gland expression improved objective findings, subjective symptoms, meibomian gland function, and MMP-9 immunoassay results. The results support the combination of IPL and meibomian gland expression for treating moderate to severe MGD.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of transplantation with human corneal limbal epithelial (HCLE) cell sheets cultured on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-dopamine (DA)-coated substrates and harvested via enzymatic digestion of CMC with cellulase in a rabbit animal model of limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD). Synthesized CMC-DA was pretreated onto the surface of culture plates. Then, HCLE cells were cultured on precoated CMC-DA and HCLE cell sheets were harvested using cellulase-containing cell culture medium. HCLE cell sheets were evaluated using a live/dead assay, histological examination, and immunofluorescence staining. For in vivo assessment, HCLE cell sheets were transplanted in a rabbit model of LSCD for 2 weeks to determine the effectiveness of the repair. Primary culture of HCLE cells stained positively for p63, cytokeratin (CK)15, and CK12. HCLE cell sheets were generated with a well-preserved morphology and transparency ranging in size from 15 to 19 mm after cellulase-assisted cell sheet generation. HCLE cell sheets uniformly stained positively for human mitochondria, p63, CK15, CK12, CK3/2p, and zonula occludens (ZO)-1. HCLE cell sheet transplantation in a rabbit model of LSCD improved the corneal opacity and neovascularization scores. Transplanted HCLE cell sheets stained positively for p63 and CK12. Transplantation of HCLE cell sheets harvested on CMC-DA coating combined with cellulase is a safe and efficient procedure for corneal epithelial regeneration in a rabbit model of LSCD. This system could enable a promising strategy to regenerate corneal epithelium by transplantation in ocular surface disorders.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Two Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreaks simultaneously occurred at a church and a long-term care facility in Daegu, South Korea. This study aimed to investigate the epidemiological characteristics of COVID-19 and factors related to severe outcomes. METHODS: We enrolled all inpatients diagnosed with COVID-19 between February 21 and April 2, 2020, in Daegu Dongsan Hospital. We analyzed their clinical and demographic data, laboratory parameters, radiological findings, symptoms, and treatment outcomes. RESULTS: Of 694 patients, severe cases accounted for 19.7% (137 patients). No severe case was observed among patients aged ≤19 years. Hypertension was the most common comorbidity (27%), and cough was the most common symptom (59%). Asymptomatic patients accounted for 14.4% of cases. Lymphopenia, lactate dehydrogenase, C-reactive protein, and albumin were associated with severe outcomes. The first outbreak was mostly associated with younger age groups, and asymptomatic patients mostly showed mild progression. In the second outbreak involving a long-term care facility, both the number of severe patients and the mortality rate were higher. CONCLUSIONS: The overall mortality in Daegu was low, which might have resulted from large scale mass screening to detect patients and starting appropriate treatment, including hospitalization for severe cases, and quarantine for asymptomatic patients.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the clinical outcomes of bilateral mix-and-match implantation of diffractive multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) with different add powers. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 18 patients who underwent bilateral mix-and-match implantation of diffractive multifocal IOLs with different add powers. Multifocal IOLs with add powers of + 2.75 diopters (D) and + 4.00 D were implanted into the patients' dominant and nondominant eyes, respectively. At 1 and 3-month postoperatively, monocular and binocular visual acuity was measured using logMAR charts and manifest refraction was performed. Specifically, logMAR charts were used to measure uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA), uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA), and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA). Defocus curves, contrast sensitivity, and patient satisfaction were assessed at 3-month postoperatively. RESULTS: Binocular logMAR measurements (mean ± standard deviation) at 3-month postoperatively were 0.01 ± 0.04 (UDVA), 0.16 ± 0.05 (UIVA), and 0.11 ± 0.07 (UNVA). Postoperative spherical equivalent was - 0.43 ± 0.35 D and - 0.39 ± 0.21 D in the dominant and nondominant eyes, respectively. Defocus curves showed significant differences between - 1.50 and - 4.00 D among binocular, dominant, and nondominant eye measurements, except between - 2.50 and - 3.00 D. Eyes implanted with + 2.75 and + 4.00 D IOLs showed good contrast sensitivity under photopic and mesopic conditions. Over 80% of patients reported high satisfaction with their near vision. CONCLUSIONS: Bilateral mix-and-match implantation of diffractive multifocal IOLs with add powers of + 2.75 D and + 4.00 D showed good near, intermediate, and far vision.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To compare the protective effects of cyclosporine A emulsion (Restasis: 0.05% cyclosporine A) (CsAE) and cyclosporine A cationic emulsion (Ikervis: 0.1% cyclosporine A) (CsACE) on cellular inflammation, apoptosis, proliferation, and survival in an in vitro dry eye model. METHODS: The concentration of CsA in CsAE and CsACE was verified using a liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry system. Human corneal epithelial cells were subjected to desiccation stress. Human corneal epithelial cells were incubated with or without 3 groups of cyclosporine A medium (CsAE 1:50, CsACE 1:50, and CsACE 1:100). p-NF-κB p65, p-IκBα, Bax, Bcl-xL, p-Erk1/2, and p-Akt levels were determined using Western blots, and TNF-α levels were quantified using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: The CsA concentration of CsACE 1:100 was nearly the same as that of CsAE 1:50. Compared with CsAE 1:50 (0.78 ± 0.19 fold), the p-NF-κB p65 level was further reduced in CsACE 1:50 (0.38 ± 1.20 fold) and 1:100 (0.29 ± 0.11 fold) as well as p-IκBα. Levels of TNF-α were also lower in CsACE 1:50 and 1:100 than in CsAE 1:50. Induction of the apoptotic protein Bax was significantly decreased in CsACE 1:50 and 1:100 compared with CsAE 1:50, whereas that of the antiapoptotic protein Bcl-xL was increased in CsACE 1:50 and 1:100. p-ERK1/2 and p-Akt levels were higher in CsACE 1:50 and 1:100 than in CsAE 1:50. CONCLUSIONS: CsACE had more potent anti-inflammatory and antiapoptotic effects than CsAE in a transwell desiccation stress model. CsACE also enhanced proliferation and survival factors under desiccation stress compared with CsAE in this in vitro dry eye model.

RESUMEN

Purpose: To investigate the antifibrotic effects of sakuraso-saponin on a primary culture of human pterygium fibroblasts (HPFs) and normal human Tenon fibroblasts (HTFs) as compared to the effects of mitomycin C (MMC). Methods: Samples of HPFs and HTFs were acquired during primary pterygium surgery. Cell toxicity, cell migration, and expression of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß) were evaluated in HPFs and HTFs after treatment with sakuraso-saponin and MMC. To determine the possible mechanisms underlying the antifibrotic effects of sakuraso-saponin, the expression of phosphorylated Smad2/3 was evaluated after treatment with sakuraso-saponin and MMC. Results: MMC (≥200 µg/mL) significantly reduced cell viability in both HPFs and HTFs, whereas sakuraso-saponin (1.0 µg/mL) decreased cell viability in HPFs only. Both sakuraso-saponin (1.0 µg/mL) and MMC (200 µg/mL) treatment significantly reduced the expression of α-SMA and TGF-ß in HPFs (P < 0.05). It is interesting that the expression of α-SMA and TGF-ß after treatment with sakuraso-saponin was significantly lower than that after treatment with MMC (P < 0.05). The expression of phosphorylated Smad2/3 protein was decreased by sakuraso-saponin and MMC in HPFs. Both sakuraso-saponin and MMC inhibited TGF-ß1-induced cell migration as compared to the control in HPFs. Conclusions: Sakuraso-saponin could be more effective than MMC for the reduction of fibrosis in HPFs. Our results might present the basis for its use as a promising candidate drug for adjuvant therapy to prevent recurrent pterygium after surgery.

RESUMEN

We report proteogenomic analysis of diffuse gastric cancers (GCs) in young populations. Phosphoproteome data elucidated signaling pathways associated with somatic mutations based on mutation-phosphorylation correlations. Moreover, correlations between mRNA and protein abundances provided potential oncogenes and tumor suppressors associated with patient survival. Furthermore, integrated clustering of mRNA, protein, phosphorylation, and N-glycosylation data identified four subtypes of diffuse GCs. Distinguishing these subtypes was possible by proteomic data. Four subtypes were associated with proliferation, immune response, metabolism, and invasion, respectively; and associations of the subtypes with immune- and invasion-related pathways were identified mainly by phosphorylation and N-glycosylation data. Therefore, our proteogenomic analysis provides additional information beyond genomic analyses, which can improve understanding of cancer biology and patient stratification in diffuse GCs.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To compare posture-induced intraocular pressure (IOP) changes in vitrectomized eyes and normal eyes of patients who had vitrectomy in one eye. METHODS: A total of 31 patients older than 20 years of age who underwent vitrectomy were enrolled in the study. At least six months after vitrectomy, we measured IOP in both eyes using a rebound tonometer 10 minutes after the patient assumed sitting, supine, right lateral decubitus, and left lateral decubitus positions. Patients with a history of ocular surgery (not including vitrectomy) or recent medication use associated with IOP were excluded. IOP and ocular parameters of vitrectomized and normal fellow eyes were compared. For the decubitus position, IOP values of dependent and nondependent eyes were compared. RESULTS: No significant difference was observed in IOP between vitrectomized and normal eyes in the sitting and supine positions. The IOP for dependent eyes (on the lower side in the lateral decubitus position) was significantly higher than the IOP for nondependent eyes in both right lateral decubitus (right vitrectomized eye 19.31 ± 4.20 vs. 16.71 ± 4.02 mmHg, p < 0.001; left vitrectomized eye 18.35 ± 1.75 vs. 16.04 ± 3.02 mmHg, p = 0.003) and left lateral decubitus (right vitrectomized eye 17.32 ± 4.63 vs. 19.15 ± 3.83 mmHg, p = 0.004; left vitrectomized eye 16.19 ± 1.81 vs. 18.12 ± 2.29 mmHg, p < 0.001) positions. CONCLUSIONS: IOP was higher in the dependent than the nondependent eye in the lateral decubitus position, for both vitrectomized and nonoperated eyes.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To compare measurements of anterior and posterior keratometric values, using a color light-emitting diode corneal topographer and a dual rotating Scheimpflug-Placido topographer. METHODS: Anterior and posterior corneal index measurements were performed using a color light-emitting diode corneal topographer (Cassini) and a dual rotating Scheimpflug-Placido topographer (Galilei G4) and then compared. The paired t-test, intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs), and Bland-Altman plots were used to evaluate the agreement between measurements. RESULTS: Sixty postrefractive surgery eyes and 60 normal eyes were evaluated. Both the color light-emitting diode corneal topographer and the dual rotating Scheimpflug-Placido topographer provided highly repeatable corneal measurements (ICC > 0.969). The agreement levels between the 2 devices for anterior corneal power, astigmatism magnitude, and J0 and J45 values were ICC > 0.906 for the total group. However, the ICC values for posterior corneal power, astigmatism magnitude, and J0 and J45 values were lower than 0.681 for the total group. CONCLUSIONS: The anterior keratometric values obtained by the color light-emitting diode corneal topographer and the dual rotating Scheimpflug-Placido topographer showed high agreement levels, but the posterior keratometric values showed lower agreement levels.
