RESUMEN

This study aims to evaluate the ecosystem services of Upo wetland, one of the best-known Ramsar sites in Korea, reflecting the characteristics of the ecological assets and local knowledges in the area. Application of spatial text-mining begins with collecting local perceptions and knowledge of residents on the 17 ecological assets of Upo site and surrounding area. Our results identified five important ecosystem services: flood control during heavy rainfall, water purification by aquatic plants, cultural and natural heritages, agricultural products and water provision for crop cultivation. GIS created a map where these ecosystem services were linked to the locations of 17 ecological assets. This map showed which ecosystem service is associated with particular ecological assets and their characteristics from residents' perspectives. Mapping local knowledge using the spatial text-mining is able to identify multi-functional bases which provide various ecosystem services in the same location simultaneously. Identification of multi-functional bases can provide information for local government to design an effective and comprehensive management plan considering physical-cultural geography of ecosystem services.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic greatly impacted the health and economy worldwide. Children and adolescents are less affected by COVID-19 but are more vulnerable to secondary damage, such as mental health. We would like to evaluate the subjective economic changes caused by COVID-19 in Korea and adolescents' mental health status. METHODS: The data are based on the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey, published by the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention in South Korea. It is an annual cross-sectional national representative survey of middle and high school students. There were 54,948 subjects, and the survey was conducted from August 3, 2020 to November 13, 2020. We investigated usual stress, loneliness, anxiety, sadness and hopelessness, and suicidal ideation. RESULTS: We found that the odds ratio of adolescent mental health increased as the economic deterioration caused by COVID-19 increased. Overall, it was more severe in female students, and the greater the economic change, the worse the anxiety in boys and the worse the sadness and hopelessness in girls. CONCLUSION: We hope that it will be possible to prevent and intervene early in adolescents, considering not only the risk of infection from COVID-19 but also mental health, especially mental health related to the economic deterioration caused by COVID-19.

RESUMEN

The resident participatory ecosystem service assessment is a method for determining local situations through the ecological knowledge of residents who most closely experience changes in local ecosystems. This is an opportunity for residents to synthesize their environmental knowledge. It provides valuable research material for researchers, can be utilized as a pathway for civil servants to reflect residents' opinions on policy, and can help environmental organizations instill environmental awareness and develop environmental public opinions in residents. Despite the participation of various stakeholders in resident participatory ecosystem service assessment, discussions concerning their roles and the nature of cooperation have largely not borne fruit. This study ascertained opinions on the development of the resident participatory ecosystem service assessment from local residents, local universities and research institutes, and relevant civil servants who participated as stakeholders in environmental organizations in this assessment. Upon organizing the stakeholders' interests through text mining based on the Q methodology, results indicated that research groups were interested in utilizing research evaluation techniques of a participatory ecosystem services assessment. In contrast, environmental organizations and civil servants were interested in utilizing the assessment results for political application. These two groups agreed that it is important to periodically map and utilize the research results of resident participatory ecosystem service assessment. The South Korean case featured in this study indicated that research teams will have to do their utmost in technique development, as will civil servants and environmental organizations, in creating measures for policy application. All of these groups should first attempt to map the results of resident participation, thereby creating resources for research and policy application, and make advances toward governance for robust resident participatory ecosystem service assessment.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to better identify the information generated by citizens and to explore the regional social phenomenon whereby higher quality urban services focused on understanding regional issues are promoted. Citizens voluntarily and continuously communicate with local government both online and offline. We wanted to determine how civic information can be applied to urban planning. We selected Shiheung City, Republic of Korea, as our study area, as the city is formed of various types of land use: industrial areas, agricultural land, and residential areas. This area is facing developmental pressure with released development-restricted areas, and has been environmentally damaged by industrial complexes. We conducted a semantic network analysis of the top 10% most commonly used nouns in civil complaints to determine the keywords. Each thematic map we created was based on geographical information to explain the temporary, continuous, and chronic issues. The chronic problems were discussed in relation to the regional development process. The process of identifying and analyzing local issues by analyzing information voluntarily provided by citizens plays an important role in government-led urban management planning and policy formation and can contribute to decision making in the development of future urban policies.

RESUMEN

We report proteogenomic analysis of diffuse gastric cancers (GCs) in young populations. Phosphoproteome data elucidated signaling pathways associated with somatic mutations based on mutation-phosphorylation correlations. Moreover, correlations between mRNA and protein abundances provided potential oncogenes and tumor suppressors associated with patient survival. Furthermore, integrated clustering of mRNA, protein, phosphorylation, and N-glycosylation data identified four subtypes of diffuse GCs. Distinguishing these subtypes was possible by proteomic data. Four subtypes were associated with proliferation, immune response, metabolism, and invasion, respectively; and associations of the subtypes with immune- and invasion-related pathways were identified mainly by phosphorylation and N-glycosylation data. Therefore, our proteogenomic analysis provides additional information beyond genomic analyses, which can improve understanding of cancer biology and patient stratification in diffuse GCs.

RESUMEN

The ability of dip-pen nanolithography (DPN) to generate nano- or microarrays of soft or hard materials (e.g., small molecules, DNA, proteins, nanoparticles, sols, and polymers) in a direct-write manner has been widely demonstrated. The transporting of large-sized ink materials such as bacteria, however, remains a significant challenge with this technique. The size limitation of the water meniscus formed between the DPN tip and the solid surface becomes a bottleneck in such diffusion-based molecular transport experiments. Herein, we report a straightforward "stamp-on" DPN method that uses a nanostructured poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline) hydrogel-coated tip and carrier agents to generate patterns of micrometer-sized Escherichia coli JM 109 bacterial cells. We demonstrate that this approach enables the deposition of a single bacterial cell array on a solid surface or arrays of layers of multiple cells by modulating the viscosity of the "ink" solution. Fluorescence microscopy images indicated that the deposited bacterial cells were kept alive on Luria-Bertani-agar layered solid surfaces after DPN patterning.

RESUMEN

The activity of beta-catenin/TCF, the key component of Wnt signaling pathway, is frequently deregulated in human cancers, resulting in the activation of genes whose dysregulation has significant consequences on tumor development. Therefore, identifying the target genes of Wnt signaling is important for understanding beta-catenin-mediated carcinogenesis. Here, we report STMN2, a gene implicated in the regulation of microtubule dynamics, as a novel target of beta-catenin-mediated transcription. STMN2 was up-regulated in hepatoma and cirrhotic liver tissues compared to normal liver and also in cell lines where beta-catenin/TCF is constitutively activated. Transient activation of beta-catenin/TCF either by transfection of a constitutively active form of beta-catenin or by LiCl treatment induced the STMN2 mRNA expression in PLC/PRF/5 cells. Of the four members of STMN gene family, only STMN2 showed a Wnt-dependent expression pattern. Through promoter mapping and chromatin immunoprecipitation assays, we found that STMN2 is a direct target of beta-catenin/TCF-mediated transcription and that the TCF binding site at -1713 of STMN2 promoter is critical for beta-catenin/TCF-dependent expression regulation. siRNA-mediated knock-down of STMN2 expression indicated that STMN2 is required for maintaining the anchorage-independent growth state of beta-catenin/TCF-activated hepatoma cells. Our results suggest that STMN2 might be a novel player of beta-catenin/TCF-mediated carcinogenesis in the liver.
