RESUMEN

This study introduces a post-treatment process, the subpressure-driven soft deformation method, to reduce inherent voids in Material Extrusion (MEX) components. By subjecting printed green components to heat treatment under subpressure, the process enhances viscosity, effectively filling voids formed between deposited tracks. The average porosities of the samples sintered from the green components without and with soft deformation are calculated to be 3.55% and 2.36%, respectively. A comparison of the tensile strengths and fracture surfaces of the sintered samples with and without soft deformation treatment indicated that the sintered samples with soft deformation treatment exhibited narrower standard deviation for the various mechanical properties. Capillary rheometer calculations indicate feedstock viscosity to be between 450.34 and 1018.31 Pa s under subpressure, diminishing inter-track voids without sizeable dimensional changes. Molecular dynamics simulation demonstrates a 3.7-fold increase in bond strength, indicating intertrack voids effectively eliminated. Reduced inter-particle distances facilitate necking, grain growth, and improved sintered density.

RESUMEN

Crosslinked hydrophilic polymers with high water absorption rates are known as superabsorbent polymers (SAPs). Most commercial superabsorbent polymers are made with acrylic acid, which is difficult to biodegrade. So, in this investigation, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was utilized as a significant component in the synthesis of polysaccharide-based SAPs. Citric acid (CA) and starch were chosen as crosslinking agents because they are more eco-friendly, non-toxic, and biodegradable than traditional crosslinking agents. FTIR analysis revealed that the superabsorbent polymer product contains a crosslinked structure of CMC and starch with side chains that carry carboxylate functional groups. Superabsorbent weight loss and grafting data were satisfactorily studied using the TGA approach. Under optimum circumstances, the SAP2 water absorbency capacity in distilled water was 287.37 g.g-1 and SAP1 absorbency capacity in a solution containing 0.9 wt% NaCl was 52.18 g.g-1. Moreover, Schott's pseudo-second-order model was used to determine the kinetic swelling of the superabsorbent. The initial swelling rate of SAPs can be calculated using the Q∞ data acquired in the following order: SAP2 > SAP1 > SAP3 > SAP4 in distilled water and SAP1 > SAP2 > SAP3 > SAP4 in 0.9 wt% NaCl solution, respectively. The findings suggested that a small amount of citric acid introduced into the SAPs matrix could enhance the swelling rate of SAPs. The results of the cytotoxicity tests show that the extraction liquid of composite hydrogel fibers is less cytotoxic than the positive control. As well, SAP underwent in silico docking investigations on the DNA Gyrase enzyme. As the ligand is a monomer of SAP, it was a long chain of carbohydrate molecules with alcoholic groups, esters groups, and keto groups forms a strong binding interaction with DNA gyrase.

RESUMEN

Volume loading of feedstock using trimodal iron (Fe) powders was investigated for the application of extrusion-based additive manufacturing (AM). Fe trimodal powder composed of nano, sub-nano, and micro particles was manufactured via the powder metallurgy process where small particles behave as rolling bearings among large particles, and thereby improving the flow characteristics of feedstock by minimizing friction among the particles. The flow behavior and microstructures of the monomodal feedstock were compared with those of the trimodal feedstock. We have confirmed that the critical powder loading of monomodal powder was measured to be 70 vol.% while trimodal powder showed up to 74 vol.%. Furthermore, trimodal feedstocks of 60, 65, 70, 75, and 80 vol.% Fe powder were prepared to determine the optimal powder content for sintering. As a result, the feedstock with powder content of 70 vol.% gave the highest sintered density of 92.32%, the highest Vickers hardness of 80.67 HV, with the smallest dimensional variation in shrinkage, proposing 70 vol.% of trimodal feedstock to be the suitable powder content for AM. Finally, its microstructural and mechanical comparison with 70 vol.% sintered part using monomodal Fe powder, showed that the sintered part using trimodal feedstock displayed higher hardness, uniform shrinkage as well as smaller grain size, confirming trimodal feedstock to be favorable for the application of extrusion-based AM.

RESUMEN

For attaining eco-friendly nanocellulose-based films with enhanced thermal and mechanical properties, a series of composite films was fabricated by using a facile casting method of aqueous carboxymethylated cellulose nanofibril (c-CNF) dispersions with different contents (0-20 wt%) of polyacrylamide (PAM). The microstructure, thermal and mechanical properties of c-CNF/PAM composite films were investigated as a function of the PAM content. The FT-IR spectra revealed the presence of specific interactions between c-CNF and PAM in the composite films. Accordingly, the mechanical moduli of the films were highly improved with the addition of PAM. The storage modulus of the composite film with 20 wt% PAM were measured to be ˜935 MPa at 30 °C, which was far higher than the modulus ˜17 MPa for the neat c-CNF film. In addition, the thermal decomposition temperatures were found to increase from ˜303 °C for the neat c-CNF film to ˜312 °C for the composite film with 20 wt% PAM.

RESUMEN

Effects of quality, physicochemical properties and antioxidants in Camembert cheese added with red ginseng powder (RGP) were investigated. Cheese samples were prepared with 0.05%, 0.10%, 0.15% and 0.20% RGP. and then monitored during ripening at 14°C for 28 d. The pH of the RGP amended treatment groups increased during the ripening period relative to the control (p<0.05). Moreover, the 1,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyle (DPPH) was highest in the 0.15% RGP group from 21 d to 28 d. ABTS+ radical scavenging activity was increased just like DPPH as the ripening period passed, 0.10% treatment was highest at from 7 d to 21 d. 0.15% RGP was contents of ginsenosides : 10,999.7 ppm. The Free fatty acids (FFA), controls with 0.15% treatment, while the total fat (TF) and monounsaturated fat (MuSF) were higher in the control than the 0.15% RGP group (p<0.05). The total free amino acid (FAA) was increased in the control, and 0.15% RGP, and control was highest at then 0.15% RGP. The samples had average contents of fat and protein were 29% and 18-20% respectively. Additionally, the L* value decreased, while the a* and b* values increased as the amount of RGP added increased. Sensory evaluation revealed that texture and total acceptability were higher in the control group at 12 d. Although the addition of RGP did not exert a better effect on the ripening of the camembert cheese, but the ripening grade was similar to that of the common camembert cheese, and the additional function of the cheese was reinforced. Functional cheese could be developed.

RESUMEN

Human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been used in cell-based therapy to promote revascularization after peripheral or myocardial ischemia. High levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) are involved in the senescence and apoptosis of MSCs, causing defective neovascularization. Here, we examined the effect of the natural antioxidant lycopene on oxidative stress-induced apoptosis in MSCs. Although H2O2 (200 µM) increased intracellular ROS levels in human MSCs, lycopene (10 µM) pretreatment suppressed H2O2-induced ROS generation and increased survival. H2O2-induced ROS increased the levels of phosphorylated p38 mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK), Jun-N-terminal kinase (JNK), ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM), and p53, which were inhibited by lycopene pretreatment. Furthermore, lycopene pretreatment decreased the expression of cleaved poly (ADP ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1) and caspase-3 and increased the expression of B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) and Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax), which were induced by H2O2 treatment. Moreover, lycopene significantly increased manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) expression and decreased cellular ROS levels via the PI3K-Akt pathway. Our findings show that lycopene pretreatment prevents ischemic injury by suppressing apoptosis-associated signal pathway and enhancing anti-oxidant protein, suggesting that lycopene could be developed as a beneficial broad-spectrum agent for the successful MSC transplantation in ischemic diseases.

RESUMEN

The effects of adding shrimp (Periclimenes imperator) powder to Appenzeller cheese on quality and characteristics during ripening were investigated. Cheese samples were prepared containing 1.0%, 2.0%, and 3.0% shrimp powder. Changes in the lactic acid bacterial populations, pH, water-soluble nitrogen concentrations, consumer acceptability, colour and texture were monitored during ripening. The addition of shrimp powder did not affect the appearance or consumer sensory characteristics of the cheeses. Likewise, cheese cohesiveness, fracturability, and springiness were not significantly altered. It was concluded that the quality of the Appenzeller cheese was not affected by adding shrimp powder.

RESUMEN

To investigate the microstructural effects of the synthesized TiO2 nanopowders such as particle size, specific surface area, pore size and pore distributions for the application of an anode material of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC), size-controlled and well-dispersed TiO2 nanopowders were synthesized by chemical vapor condensation (CVC) process in the range of 800-1000 degreesC under a pressure of 50 mbar. The average particle size of synthesized TiO2 nanopowders was increased with increasing temperature from 13 nm for 800 degreesC, 15 nm for 900 degreesC and 26 nm. The specific surface area of synthesized nanoparticles were measured as 119.1 m2/g for 800 degreesC, 104.7 m2/g for 900 degreesC and 59.5 m2/g for 1000 degreesC, respectively. The conversion efficiency values (eta%) of DSSC with the synthesized TiO2 nanopowders at 800 degreesC, 900 degreesC, and 1000 degreesC were 2.59%, 5.96% and 3.66%, respectively. The highest conversion efficiency obtained in the 900 degreesC (5.96%) sample is thought to be attributable to homogeneous particle size and pore distributions, large specific surface area, and high transmittance in regions of dye absorption wavelength.

RESUMEN

This paper provides an overview on our recent investigations on the consolidation of hierarchy-structured nanopowder agglomerates and related applications to net-shaping nanopowder materials. Understanding the nanopowder agglomerate sintering (NAS) process is essential to processing of net-shaped nanopowder materials and components with small and complex shape. The key concept of the NAS process is to enhance material transport through controlling the powder interface volume of nanopowder agglomerates. Based upon this concept, we have suggested a new idea of full density processing for fabricating micro-powder injection molded part using metal nanopowder agglomerates produced by hydrogen reduction of metal oxide powders. Studies on the full density sintering of die compacted- and powder injection molded iron base nano-agglomerate powders are introduced and discussed in terms of densification process and microstructure.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to assess the impact of premenopausal Total Abdominal Hysterectomy (TAH) on the function of the remaining ovaries by reviewing the menopausal age in TAH treated patients. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 510 women who had previously undergone TAH, either with or without unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, due to benign disease at the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Yonsei University College of Medicine, between Jan 1989 and Dec 1992. Out of the 510 women, the 94 who were throughly followed up were included in the study, and their menopausal age based on patient symptoms was compared to that of the control group. The mean menopausal age in TAH treated patients was significantly lower than that of the control group (P < 0.001). There was a positive correlation between age at operation and menopausal age. From this study, we could conclude that TAH accelerated ovarian dysfunction, and that the younger the patient was at the time of operation, the earlier the onset of menopause. It is hence apparent that women treated with TAH are at risk of early menopause and should receive adequate hormone replacement therapy.
