RESUMEN

Background: This study evaluated early childhood comorbidities of cerebral palsy (CP) in low birth weight (LBW) children and assessed the impact of maternal bio-psychosocial factors on CP risk in preterm infants of varying birth weights (BWs). Methods: Data from 15,181 preterm infants (2009-2013) and 151,810 controls were analyzed using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. CP prevalence and LBW-associated comorbidities were examined, and odds ratios (ORs) were calculated. Results: This study confirmed increasing prematurity and LBW rates in Taiwan, with LBW infants showing higher CP prevalence. Significant maternal risk factors included age extremes (<20 and >40 years). LBW infants exhibited higher risks for respiratory, circulatory, nervous system, and psycho-developmental comorbidities compared with controls, with the lowest BW having even higher ORs. Maternal factors such as family income, the number of hospital admissions, and length of hospital stay were remarkably correlated with BW and subsequent complications. Each additional gestational week crucially reduced the risk of complications in premature infants. Conclusions: LBW infants are at a higher risk for CP and various comorbidities, with maternal bio-psychosocial factors playing a critical role. Addressing these factors in prenatal care and interventions is essential to improve outcomes for premature infants.

In this study, two nitrile-functionalized spiro-twisted benzoxazine monomers, namely 2,2'-((6,6,6',6'-tetramethyl-6,6',7,7'-tetrahydro-2H,2'H-8,8'-spirobi[indeno[5,6-e][1,3]oxazin]-3,3'(4H,4'H)-diyl)bis(4,1-phenylene))diacetonitrile (TSBZBC) and 4,4'-(6,6,6',6'-tetramethyl-6,6',7,7'-tetrahydro-2H,2'H-8,8'-spirobi[indeno[5,6-e][1,3]oxazin]-3,3'(4H,4'H)-diyl)dibenzonitrile (TSBZBN) were successfully developed as cross-linkable precursors. In addition, the incorporation of the nitrile group by covalent bonding onto the crosslinked spiro-twisted molecular chains improve the miscibility of SPE membranes with lithium salts while maintaining good mechanical properties. Owing to the presence of a high fractional free volume of spiro-twisted matrix, the -CN groups would have more space for rotation and vibration to assist lithium migration, especially for the benzyl cyanide-containing SPE. When combined with poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) electrolytes, a new type of CN-containing semi-interpenetrating polymer networks for solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) were prepared. The PEO-TSBZBC and PEO-TSBZBN composite SPEs (with 20 wt% crosslinked structure in the polymer) are denoted as the BC20 and BN20, respectively. The BC20 sample exhibited an ionic conductivity (σ) of 3.23 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 80 °C and a Li+ ion transference number of 0.187. The LiFePO4 (LFP)|BC20|Li sample exhibited a satisfactory charge-discharge capacity of 163.6 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C (with approximately 100% coulombic efficiency). Furthermore, the Li|BC20|Li cell was more stable during the Li plating/stripping process than the Li|BN20|Li and Li|PEO|Li samples. The Li|BC20|Li symmetric cell could be cycled continuously for more than 2700 h without short-circuiting. In addition, the specific capacity of the LFP|BC20|Li cell retained 87% of the original value after 50 cycles.

Due to the advancement of genome sequencing techniques, a great stride has been made in exome sequencing such that the association study between disease and genetic variants has become feasible. Some powerful and well-known association tests have been proposed to test the association between a group of genes and the disease of interest. However, some challenges still remain, in particular, many factors can affect the performance of testing power, e.g., the sample size, the number of causal and non-causal variants, and direction of the effect of causal variants. Recently, a powerful test, called TREM , is derived based on a random effects model. TREM has the advantages of being less sensitive to the inclusion of non-causal rare variants or low effect common variants or the presence of missing genotypes. However, the testing power of TREM can be low when a portion of causal variants has effects in opposite directions. To improve the drawback of TREM , we propose a novel test, called TROB , which keeps the advantages of TREM and is more robust than TREM in terms of having adequate power in the case of variants with opposite directions of effect. Simulation results show that TROB has a stable type I error rate and outperforms TREM when the proportion of risk variants decreases to a certain level and its advantage over TREM increases as the proportion decreases. Furthermore, TROB outperforms several other competing tests in most scenarios. The proposed methodology is illustrated using the Shanghai Breast Cancer Study.

In this study, a series of crosslinked membranes were prepared as solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) for all-solid-state lithium ion batteries (ASSLIBs). An epoxy-containing copolymer (glycidyl methacrylate-co-poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate, PGA) and two amine curing agents, linear Jeffamine ED2003 and hyperbranched polyethyleneimine (PEI), were utilized to prepare SPEs with various crosslinking degrees. The PGA/polyethylene oxide (PEO) blends were cured by ED2003 and PEI to obtain slightly and heavily crosslinked structures, respectively. For further optimizing the interfacial and the electrochemical properties, an interlocking bilayer membrane based on overlapping and subsequent curing of PGA/PEO/ED2003 and PEO/PEI layers was developed. The presence of this amino/epoxy network can inhibit PEO crystallinity and maintain the dimensional stability of membranes. For the slightly crosslinked PGA/PEO/ED2003 membrane, an ionic conductivity of 5.61 × 10-4 S cm-1 and a lithium ion transference number (tLi+) of 0.43 were obtained, along with a specific capacity of 156 mAh g-1 (0.05 C) acquired from an assembled half-cell battery. However, the capacity retention retained only 54% after 100 cycles (0.2 C, 80 °C), possibly because the PEO-based electrolyte was inclined to recrystallize after long term thermal treatment. On the other hand, the highly crosslinked PGA/PEO/PEI membrane exhibited a similar ionic conductivity of 3.44 × 10-4 S cm-1 and a tLi+ of 0.52. Yet, poor interfacial adhesion between the membrane and the cathode brought about a low specific capacity of 48 mAh g-1. For the reinforced interlocking bilayer membrane, an ionic conductivity of 3.24 × 10-4 S cm-1 and a tLi+ of 0.42 could be achieved. Moreover, the capacity retention reached as high as 80% after 100 cycles (0.2 C, 80 °C). This is because the presence of the epoxy-based interlocking bilayer structure can block the pathway of lithium dendrite puncture effectively. We demonstrate that the unique interlocking bilayer structure is capable of offering a new approach to fabricate a robust SPE for ASSLIBs.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to explore the influences of seasonality, meteorological conditions, and air pollution exposure on the number of patients who visit the hospital due to seizures. METHODS: Outpatient and inpatient data from the National Health Insurance Database of Taiwan from 2009 to 2013, meteorological data from the Meteorological Bureau, and air pollution exposure data from the Taiwan Air Quality Monitoring Stations were collected and integrated into daily time series data. The following data processing and analysis results are based on the mean of the 7 days' lag data of the 18 meteorological condition/air pollution exploratory factors to identify the critical meteorological conditions and air pollution exposure factors by executing univariate analysis. The average hospital visits for seizure per day by month were used as an index of observation. The effect of seasonality has also been examined. RESULTS: The average visits per day by month had a significant association with 10 variables. Overall, the number of visits due to these factors has been estimated to be 71.529 (13.7%). The most obvious factors affecting the estimated number of visits include ambient temperature, CH4, and NO. Six air pollutants, namely CH4, NO, CO, NO2, PM2.5, and NMHC had a significantly positive correlation with hospital visits due to seizures. Moreover, the average daily number of hospital visits was significantly high in January and February (winter season in Taiwan) than in other months (R2 = 0.422). CONCLUSION: The prediction model obtained in this study indicates the necessity of rigorous monitoring and early warning of these air pollutants and climate changes by governments. Additionally, the study provided a firm basis for establishing prediction models to be used by other countries or for other diseases.

A crucial polymer intermediate, 4-[1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)cyclopentyl]-phenol (bisphenol CP), was developed from dicyclopentadiene (DCPD), a key byproduct of the C5 fraction in petrochemicals. On the basis of bisphenol CP, a diamine, 4,4'-((cyclopentane-1,1-diylbis(4,1-phenylene))bis(oxy))-dianiline (cyclopentyl diamine; CPDA) was subsequently obtained through a nucleophilic substitution of bisphenol CP, followed by the hydrogenation process. By using the CPDA diamine, a series of polyimides with cyclopentyl (cardo) units on the backbone were prepared along with a reference polyimide (API-6F) based on 4,4'-(4,4'-(propane-2,2-diyl)bis(4,1-phenylene))bis(oxy)dianiline (BPAA), and 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)-diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) for the exploration of structure-properties relationship. Thanks to the presence of cyclopentyl units, this type of cardo polyimides exhibited comparable tensile properties, especially a large elongation (25.4%). It is also worth noting that CPI-6F exhibited better solubility in organic solvents, such as NMP, DMAc, THF, and chloroform, than the other PIs. Gas separation properties were also evaluated for these cardo-type polyimides.

As an efficient technique for the preparation of polymeric hexagonal orderly arrays, the breath figure (BF) process has opened a modern avenue for a bottom-up fabrication method for more than two decades. Through the use of the water vapor condensation on the solution surface, the water droplets will hexagonally pack into ordered arrays, acting as a template for controlling the regular micro patterns of polymeric films. Comparing to the top-down techniques, such as lithography or chemical etching, the use of water vapor as the template provides a simple fabrication process with sustainability. However, using highly hazardous solvents such as chloroform, carbon disulfide (CS2), benzene, dichloromethane, etc., to dissolve polymers might hinder the development toward green processes based on this technique. In this review, we will touch upon the contemporary techniques of the BF process, including its up-to-date applications first. More importantly, the search of greener processes along with less hazardous solvents for the possibility of a more sustainable BF process is the focal point of this review.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic data supporting the epilepsy-asthma association are insufficient. Therefore, we examined this association in this study. METHODS: By using claims data from the National Health Insurance Research Database (Taiwan), we executed a retrospective cohort analysis. Analysis 1 entailed comparing 150,827 patients diagnosed as having incident asthma during 1996-2013 with disease-free controls who were selected randomly during the same period, frequency matched in terms of age and sex. Similarly, analysis 2 entailed comparing 25,274 patients newly diagnosed as having epilepsy with sex- and age-matched controls who were selected randomly. At the end of 2013, we evaluated in analysis 1 the epilepsy incidence and risk and evaluated in analysis 2 the asthma incidence and risk. We applied Kaplan-Meier analysis to derive plots of the proportion of asthma-free seizures. RESULTS: In analysis 1, the asthma group exhibited a higher epilepsy incidence than did the control group (3.05 versus 2.26 per 1,000 person-years; adjusted hazard ratio: 1.39, 95% CI [1.33-1.45]). We also noted a greater risk of subsequent epilepsy in women and girls. In analysis 2, we determined that the asthma incidence between the control and epilepsy groups did not differ significantly; however, some age subgroups including children and individuals in their 30s had an increased risk. A negative association was found in adolescents. The Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed epilepsy to be positively associated with subsequent onset of asthma within seven years of epilepsy diagnosis. DISCUSSION: Asthma may be associated with high epilepsy risk, and epilepsy may be associated with high asthma risk among children and individuals in their 30s. Nevertheless, people with epilepsy in other age subgroups should be aware of the possibility of developing asthma within seven years of epilepsy diagnosis.

In this paper, the estimation of the difference between two median survival times is considered when two treatment groups of right-censored data and the associated covariates are available. To identify the possible range of covariates over which the two treatments would produce different median survival times, two confidence bands for the difference as a function of the covariates are proposed under the stratified and treatment-specific Cox models, respectively. The results of a simulation study indicate that the latter generally maintains its confidence level and the former holds its confidence level and preserves a narrower width when the two treatments satisfy the stratified Cox model. An application of the proposed confidence bands is finally illustrated with a data set in a two-arm lung cancer study.

There are several well-known single SNP tests presented in the literature for detecting gene-disease association signals. Having in place an efficient and robust testing process across all genetic models would allow a more comprehensive approach to analysis. Although some studies have shown that it is possible to construct such a test when the variants are common and the genetic model satisfies certain conditions, the model conditions are too restrictive and in general difficult to verify. In this paper, we propose a powerful and robust test without assuming any model restrictions. Our test is based on the selected 2 × 2 tables derived from the usual 2 × 3 table. By signals from these tables, we show through simulations across a wide range of allele frequencies and genetic models that this approach may produce a test which is almost uniformly most powerful in the analysis of low- and high-frequency variants. Two cancer studies are used to demonstrate applications of the proposed test.

During the 2003 outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in Taiwan, >150,000 persons were quarantined, 24 of whom were later found to have laboratory-confirmed SARS-coronavirus (SARS-CoV) infection. Since no evidence exists that SARS-CoV is infective before the onset of symptoms and the quarantined persons were exposed but not symptomatic, we thought the quarantine's effectiveness should be investigated. Using the Taiwan quarantine data, we found that the onset-to-diagnosis time of previously quarantined confirmed case-patients was significantly shortened compared to that for those who had not been quarantined. Thus, quarantine for SARS in Taiwan screened potentially infective persons for swift diagnosis and hospitalization after onset, thereby indirectly reducing infections. Full-scale quarantine measures implemented on April 28 led to a significant improvement in onset-to-diagnosis time of all SARS patients, regardless of previous quarantine status. We discuss the temporal effects of quarantine measures and other interventions on detection and isolation as well as the potential usefulness of quarantine in faster identification of persons with SARS and in improving isolation measures.
