RESUMEN

Although fibroblast growth factor 7 (FGF7) is known to promote wound healing, its mass production poses several challenges and very few studies have assessed the feasibility of producing FGF7 in cell lines such as Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. Therefore, this study sought to produce recombinant FGF7 in large quantities and evaluate its wound healing effect. To this end, the FGF7 gene was transfected into CHO cells and FGF7 production was optimized. The wound healing efficacy of N-glycosylated FGF7 was evaluated in animals on days 7 and 14 post-treatment using collagen patches (CPs), FGF7-only, and CP with FGF7 (CP+FGF7), whereas an untreated group was used as the control. Wound healing was most effective in the CP+FGF7 group. Particularly, on day 7 post-exposure, the CP+FGF7 and FGF7-only groups exhibited the highest expression of hydroxyproline, fibroblast growth factor, vascular endothelial growth factor, and transforming growth factor. Epidermalization in H&E staining showed the same order of healing as hydroxyproline content. Additionally, the CP+FGF7 and FGF7-only group exhibited more notable blood vessel formation on days 7 and 14. In conclusion, the prepared FGF7 was effective in promoting wound healing and CHO cells can be a reliable platform for the mass production of FGF7.

RESUMEN

Various edible polymers [sodium alginate, carboxyl methylcellulose, sodium oleate, liquid paraffin, pectin, pullulan, polyvinyl acetate, and shellac (SHE)] as potato-coating materials and their effect on extending the shelf life of potatoes when combined with an edible coating and UV-C irradiation treatments were evaluated. As a result of the characterization of the edible polymers, SHE was selected as the optimal coating material because it had the best moisture and light barrier properties. SHE coating successfully prevented the greening, respiration, and sprouting of potatoes caused by exposure to light and oxygen. Additionally, it reduced weight loss by inhibiting transpiration on the potato surface. While the SHE coating did not exhibit antimicrobial effects, a significant effect was observed when combined with UV-C irradiation. This study suggests the potential of combined treatment of SHE coating and UV-C irradiation in extending the postharvest quality of potatoes.

RESUMEN

Although increased sedentary behavior is associated with poor health outcomes among breast cancer survivors, the factors associated with high sedentary time in community-dwelling breast cancer survivors are unknown. This study aimed to identify factors associated with sedentary behavior in Korean community-dwelling breast cancer survivors aged ≥ 50 years. We included 205 breast cancer survivors from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Total daily sedentary time was evaluated using questions from the Korean version of the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire. We used complex-sample multivariable-adjusted logistic regression analyses to analyze the associations between sociodemographic factors, medical factors, and health-related quality of life and high sedentary time (≥ 420 min/day). Among the Korean community-dwelling breast cancer survivors, 48.2% had a high daily sedentary time. Insufficient aerobic exercise (OR 2.29; 95% CI 1.12-4.69), diabetes (OR 3.37; 95% CI 1.22-9.33), and unemployed status (OR 2.29; 95% CI 1.05-5.02) were independently associated with high sedentary time after the adjustment for multiple sociodemographic and medical confounders. Participants with a low sedentary time (< 420 min/day) showed a significantly higher mean European Quality of Life 5-Dimensions (EQ-5D) index than those with a high sedentary time after adjusting for multiple confounders (0.89 ± 0.03 vs. 0.82 ± 0.04; P = 0.001). Among the EQ-5D dimensions, problems in mobility (OR 3.37; 95% CI 1.42-7.98) and pain/discomfort (OR 2.64; 95% CI 1.24-5.63) dimensions showed positive associations with high sedentary time. Middle- or older-aged breast cancer survivors with insufficient aerobic exercise, diabetes, unemployed status, and impaired quality of life are more likely to have a high sedentary time. Reducing sedentary behavior in this population requires a tailored approach that considers diverse sociodemographic, medical, and quality-of-life factors.

RESUMEN

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case-control study. PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the preventive effect of thrombin-containing local hemostatics (TCLH) on postoperative spinal epidural hematoma (POSEH) in biportal endoscopic spinal surgery (BESS). This study compared the incidence of morphometric and symptomatic POSEH with or without TCLH in BESS. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: POSEH is reported not uncommon in BESS when compared with conventional spine surgery (CSS). TCLH achieves hemostasis with a high success rate in CSS. However, few studies have examined the effect of TCLH on BESS. METHODS: Patients with and without TCLH were assigned to groups A and B, respectively. POSEH between the two groups was compared morphometrically and symptomatically. The risk factors for symptomatic and morphometric POSEH in BESS were identified. RESULTS: The morphometric POSEH was greater in group B, and the difference was significant (p =0.019). The incidence of symptomatic POSEH was lower in group A with 4.6% (5/109) than in group B with 9.5% (9/95); however, the rate was not significantly different (p =0.136). The morphometric POSEH was classified into two small (hG1 and hG2) and large (hG3 and hG4) and were compared between groups A and B, and the difference was significant (p =0.02). In the multivariable logistic regression, nonuse of TCLH (p =0.004) and preoperative diagnosis of stenosis (p =0.016) were variables found to be significant risk factors of morphometric POSEH. CONCLUSIONS: Severe compression of the thecal sac by POSEH is more common in patients without TCLH. The risk of hematoma formation was higher when bilateral decompression was needed and the cut bone surface was more exposed.

RESUMEN

Plant-based hamburger patties (PHPs) with reduced fat content made using fat replacers will meet the consumption goals of individuals who consume meat alternative products for health. In this study, we developed a dual-alternative food model by analysing the applicability of bacterial cellulose paste (BCP) as a fat replacer and supplementing it in PHPs. BCPs were prepared with solid contents of (w/w; 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0%, 2.5%, and 3.0%) and compared and analyzed with three types of conventional vegetable [coconut oil, margarine, and shortening (SH)] and animal fats (beef tallow, butter, and lard) for various characteristics (appearance, dimensional stability, hardness level, and rheological properties). According to the results, BCP with a solid content of 3.0% (w/w) had the most similar characteristics to SH. Therefore, using SH as a control fat, PHPs in which 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% (w/w) SH were replaced by 3.0% (w/w) BCP were prepared. Analysis of the appearance, instrumental color, diameter reduction, thickness, cooking loss, and texture profile of the PHPs, confirmed that replacement of 25%-50% (w/w) SH with 3.0% (w/w) BCP in the preparation of PHP resulted in i) redder color, ii) better dimensional stability, iii) lower cooking loss, and iv) higher chewiness of the final products. The results of the sensory evaluation showed that the PHPs, with 25%-50% (w/w) SH replaced with 3.0% (w/w) BCP, exhibited no significant differences (p < 0.05) in overall preference scores compared to the full-SH sample. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the potential of BCP as a fat substitute for the production of PHPs.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with the time that community-dwelling stroke survivors spent walking. METHODS: We analyzed the cross-sectional data of 1534 community-dwelling stroke survivors from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Complex-sample logistic regression analyses were performed to determine the factors associated with insufficient walking time (<90 min/wk). The mean time spent walking was examined according to age, sex, resistance exercise level, and self-reported disability using complex-sample general linear models. RESULTS: Women (odds ratio [OR] 1.5; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.0-2.3), current smokers (OR 1.7; 95% CI, 1.1-2.8), insufficient resistance exercise (OR 2.3; 95% CI, 1.5-3.5), and those with rural residences (OR 1.4; 95% CI, 1.0-1.9) were independently associated with insufficient walking time. The mean time spent walking was significantly lower in older adults aged ≥65 years than in young adults aged <65 years (200.0 ± 42.0 min/wk vs 287.2 ± 36.6 min/wk, P = .002), in women than in men (200.9 ± 44.9 vs 286.2 ± 37.7 min/wk, P = .027), and in individuals engaging in insufficient resistance exercise compared with those engaging in sufficient resistance exercise (203.2 ± 36.2 vs 283.9 ± 43.0 min/wk, P = .008). The mean walking time did not vary according to the presence of self-reported disabilities. CONCLUSIONS: Environmental and personal factors are associated with insufficient walking time in community-dwelling stroke survivors.

RESUMEN

The extra-articular distal humerus plate (EADHP) has been widely used for surgical treatment of distal humerus shaft fracture (DHSF). However, the surgical approach, fixation methods, and implant positions of the EADHP remain controversial owing to iatrogenic radial nerve injury and complaints such as skin irritation related to the plate. Anterior plating with a modified (upside-down application) proximal humerus locking plate (PHILOS) has been proposed as an alternative, However, research on its biomechanical performance remain insufficient and were mostly based on retrospective studies. This study quantitatively compared and evaluated the biomechanical performance between posterior plating with the EADHP and anterior plating with a modified PHILOS using finite element analysis (FEA). The FEA simulation results that both the EADHP and PHILOS had adequate biomechanical performance and stability under axial, bending, and varus force load conditions. The PHILOS has a fixed stability comparable to that of the EADHP, and fixation was achieved using only four locking screws within a fixed range of 30 mm just above the olecranon fossa. The results show that the PHILOS could be an option for the fixation of a DHSF when considering the dissection range and complaints (e.g. skin irritation) associated with the EADHP.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to investigate the contemporary characteristics of sedentary behavior and physical activity levels in breast cancer survivors. The cross-sectional data of 10,073 community-dwelling Korean women aged ≥50 years in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were analyzed. The differences in sedentary behavior, walking activity, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) levels between breast cancer survivors, other cancer survivors, and women with no history of cancer were compared by complex-sample general linear models. Breast cancer survivors spent significantly less mean time in sedentary behavior than other cancer survivors and women with no history of cancer; however, among them, 48.34% spent a long sedentary time of ≥420 min/day. Breast cancer survivors had a significantly higher level of walking activity and similar total MVPA levels compared to women with no history of cancer. When comparing domain-specific MVPA levels, breast cancer survivors showed significantly lower work-related MVPA levels than women with no history of cancer. In recent years, community-dwelling Korean breast cancer survivors were less sedentary, walked more, and had equivalent MVPA levels compared with women with no history of cancer. Considering the growing emphasis on healthy lifestyles, our results may reflect more contemporary behavior trends of breast cancer survivors.

RESUMEN

This study developed sweet potato starch (SPS) based edible films and investigated several methods (acetylation, amidated pectin (AP), and CaCl2 use) to improve the edibility and different processing methods (casting and extruding) to package food possible in commercial use. Starch acetylation was conducted with up to 8 mL of acetic acid (A8) and improved the stretchability and solubility of the film. The AP addition [∼30 wt% (P3)] enhanced the film strength, further increasing solubility. CaCl2 addition [∼150 mg/g of AP (C3)] also positively influenced the film solubility and water barrier properties of the films. The SPS-A8P3C3 film showed 3.41 times higher solubility than the native SPS film. Both casted and extruded SPS-A8P3C3 films drastically dissolved in high-temperature water. When applied to oil packaging, two films could delay the lipid oxidation of the packaged samples. These results demonstrate the usability of edible packaging and extruded film for commercial use.

RESUMEN

In this study, textured vegetable protein (TVP) based on soy protein isolate, wheat gluten, and corn starch was prepared at a 5:3:2 (w/w) ratio using a low-moisture extrusion process. To evaluate the effects of extrusion parameters, die temperature and screw rotation speed, on the properties of TVP, these two parameters were manipulated at a constant barrel temperature and moisture content. The results indicated that increasing the die temperature increased the expansion ratio while decreasing the density of the extrudates. Simultaneously, increasing the screw rotation speed clearly increased the specific mechanical energy of the TVP. Furthermore, mathematical modelling suggested that the expansion ratio increases exponentially to the die temperature. However, extreme process conditions bring about a decrease in water absorption capacity and expansion ratio, as well as undesirable texture and microstructure. The results suggested that the properties of SPI-based TVP are directly influenced by the extrusion process parameters, screw speed and die temperature. RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: We investigated the sociodemographic and health-related factors associated with health checkup participation in community-dwelling stroke survivors. METHODS: Among participants of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 642 stroke survivors were included. We investigated the sociodemographic, medical, and health-related quality of life factors-evaluated by the EuroQol 5-Dimension Questionnaire (EQ-5D)-associated with participation in any type of health checkup. To explore the associations between multiple variables and health checkup participation, a multivariable complex-sample logistic regression model was used. RESULTS: One-third of the community-dwelling stroke survivors did not receive a health checkup in the past two years. Insufficient physical activity (OR: 0.5, 95% CI: 0.3-0.9), current smoking (OR: 0.4, 95% CI: 0.2-0.8), low education level (OR: 0.5, 95% CI: 0.3-0.9), living alone (OR: 0.5, 95% CI: 0.3-0.998), and no occupation (OR: 0.5, 95% CI: 0.3-0.9) showed independent negative associations with health checkup participation. Among the five EQ-5D dimensions, mobility, self-care, usual activities, and pain/discomfort dimensions were associated with health checkup participation rate. CONCLUSION: Policies and further research are needed to promote health checkups for stroke survivors who are physically inactive, currently smoking, living alone, unemployed, less educated, or having extreme problems in their daily lives.

RESUMEN

This study aims to improve the color stability of anthocyanins and develop a CO2-sensitive indicator based on black goji anthocyanin (BGA) extract. Although the BGA extracts showed distinct color changes, such as red-purple-blue, their intrinsic color diminished after 24 h. A metal complexation method was used for the high color stability of BGA. BGA extracts were chelated with various concentrations of Al3+ [0 - 20% (w/w)]. It showed high color stability and strong intensity in a dose-dependent manner. A CO2-sensitive indicator sachet was developed using hydroxypropyl methylcellulose hydrogel, based on 5% (w/w) Al3+-BGA complexes. The indicator was applied to the chicken breast and detected its spoilage after 3 days with its changing color to greyish blue, due to the microbial growth to 7.00 log CFU/g. These results demonstrated the possibility of chelated anthocyanin complexes as indicating dyes and the ability to monitor the food quality changes through noticeable color changes.

RESUMEN

Poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) are used in many electrochemical energy storage/conversion devices owing to their favorable physical properties. Therefore, PIL binders have been examined as polymeric binders for electrodes in energy storage systems (ESSs) and have shown superior performance. Several innovative technologies have been developed to improve the properties of polymers, with cross-linking being the most effective and easy strategy to achieve this. In this study, we designed a breakthrough complex cross-linking and composite technique that could successfully develop the physical properties of a polymer in a simple one-step process. Additionally, the technique could improve the thermal stability and mechanical properties of the polymer. The proposed polymeric binder showed better adhesion, higher capacitance, and good energy density with improved cyclic stability compared to that shown by conventional polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). This study revealed that cross-linked networks in polymeric binders are long-cycle-life features for electrochemical redox capacitors.

RESUMEN

The design of a novel binder is required for high-capacity silicon anodes, which typically undergo significant changes during charge/discharge cycling. Hence, in this study, a stable network structure was formed by combining tannic acid (TAc), which can be cross-linked, and poly(acrylic acid)(PAA) as an effective binder for a silicon (Si) anode. TAc is a phenolic compound and representative substance with antioxidant properties. Owing to the antioxidant ability of the C-PAA/TAc binder, side reactions during the cycling were suppressed during the formation of an appropriate solid-electrolyte interface layer. The results showed that the expansion of a silicon anode was suppressed compared with that of a conventional PAA binder. This study demonstrates that cross-linking and antioxidant capability facilitate binding and provides insights into the behavior of binders for silicon anodes. The Si anode with the C-PAA/TAc binder exhibited significantly improved cycle stability and higher Coulombic efficiency in comparison to the Si anode with well-established PAA binders. The C-PAA/TAc binder demonstrated a capacity of 1833 mA h g-1Si for 100 cycles, which is higher than that of electrodes fabricated using the conventional PAA binder. Therefore, the C-PAA/TAc binder offers better electrochemical performance.

RESUMEN

Meat analogues are garnering significant attention as future food and a sustainable diet. This study demonstrates the possibility of using rice protein (RP) to create new meat analogues. Various RP substitution ratios [0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 % (w/w)] for soy protein (SP) were used to prepare the meat analogues based on a low-moisture extrusion cooking. The effect of its ratio on the meat quality characteristics was investigated via specific mechanical energy, expansion ratio, piece density, true density, porosity, water absorption capacity, rehydration kinetics, and texture profile (hardness, springiness, cohesiveness, chewiness, and resilience). The use of RP decreased some values (specific mechanical energy, porosity, expansion ratio, water absorption capacity, springiness, cohesiveness, chewiness, and resilience) while increasing others (piece density, true density, and hardness) depending on its substitution ratio. Three different models (Peleg, Weibull, and exponential) were used to describe the rehydration kinetics of the samples, and the Weibull model was the best-fitted one. Finally, twelve polynomial equations with RP mixing ratios (0-100 %) as variables were developed to predict the quality characteristics of meat analogues. These results suggested that RP can substitute the typical SP as an expansion or texture modifier in the production of SP-based meat analogue products, and a portion of SP (≤75 %, w/w) can be substituted with RP in the production of meat analogue products. Still, the full RP substitution was impossible due to the low porosity of the resulting meat analogue.

RESUMEN

This study proposes a finite element analysis (FEA) model for complex fractures at the osteoporotic proximal humerus and investigates the relevance of using a calcar screw in surgical treatments using this model. Two types of three-dimensional (3D) fracture models of patients with osteoporotic humerus were constructed reflecting the mechanical properties of the osteoporotic humerus, such as the Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio, and two load conditions mimicking the clinical environment were applied for simulation. Using the 3D models and the conditions, the FEA software calculated the concentration and distribution of stresses developing in the humerus, locking compression plate (LCP), and screws. Then, we evaluated and predicted the fixed state of a LCP system depending on whether the maximum stress value exceeded tensile strength. When axial force was applied, insertion of the calcar screw led to significant reduction of stress applied on screws in the fracture model having a medial gap by approximately 61%, from 913.20 MPa to 351.84 MPa. Based on the results, it was clearly confirmed that using of calcar screws improved the stability of a three-part fractures and simultaneously reinforced medial support.

RESUMEN

A new second nearest-neighbor modified embedded-atom model-based PtTi binary interatomic potential was developed by improving the pure Pt unary descriptions of the pre-existing interatomic potential. Specifically, the interatomic potential was developed focusing on the shape memory-associated phenomena and the properties of equiatomic PtTi, which has potential applications as a high-temperature shape memory alloy. The simulations using the developed interatomic potential reproduced the physical properties of the equiatomic PtTi and various intermetallic compound/alloy compositions and structures. Large-scale molecular dynamic simulations of single crystalline and nanocrystalline configurations were performed to examine the temperature- and stress-induced martensitic transformations. The results show good consistency with the experiments and demonstrate the reversible phase transformation of PtTi SMA between the cubic B2 austenite and the orthorhombic B19 martensite phases. In addition, the importance of anisotropy, constraint and the orientation of grains on the transformation temperature, mechanical response, and microstructure of SMA are presented.
