RESUMEN

AIMS: This study examined the relationship between the experience of violence, social support, nursing practice environment, and mental health among South Korean mental health nurses. METHODS: Structured questionnaires were distributed to participants who worked in twelve mental health hospitals, each with at least 200 beds, in South Korea. We analyzed 243 questionnaires and used AMOS 25.0 to explore the relationships between the constructs. RESULTS: The total and indirect effects of the experience of violence and of social support on mental health were significant. The effects of burnout and of the nursing practice environment on mental health were positively significant. Burnout revealed a mediating association with the relationship between the experience of violence, social support, and mental health. CONCLUSION: The study confirmed that the experience of violence negatively affects burnout among mental health nurses, while social support relieves burnout and strengthens mental health. IMPLEMENTATION: Our research model shows that the experience of violence could affect burnout and mental health among mental health nurses. Therefore, nursing administrators should develop violence prevention policies and manuals for coping with the violence that can frequently occur in psychiatric wards.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of alcohol use disorder (AUD) among women in South Korea has been rising, causing public health problems. Yet women's treatment needs are mostly unmet in South Korea due to the lack of women-focused treatment programs. This study evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and clinical outcomes of a therapeutic community (TC)-oriented day treatment program for Korean women with AUD on alcohol abstinence self-efficacy, forgiveness, and spirituality. METHODS: The current study employed a quasi-experimental, non-equivalent control group design with a pretest and posttest. Participants were assigned to 6-month TC-oriented day treatment program (n = 19) or usual treatment (n = 21). Feasibility (treatment completion rate) and acceptability (overall program satisfaction) were assessed. Alcohol abstinence was measured as a clinical outcome at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months. Repeated measures using Alcohol Abstinence Self-Efficacy (AASE), Enright Forgiveness Inventory-Korea (EFI-K), and Spiritual Assessment Scale (SAS) were also obtained from both conditions at those three time points. RESULTS: Fifteen participants (78.9%) in the intervention group successfully completed the program. The overall program satisfaction ratings were very high (4.9 ± 0.2). Continuous abstinence rates at 6 months were significantly higher in the treatment group (78.9%) than in the control group (9.5%). Results of the two-way repeated measures ANOVA indicated that statistically significant two-way (group × time) interaction effects were found for the intervention group on AASE, EFI-K, and SAS but not for the control group on any of the outcomes. CONCLUSION: The current study demonstrated the feasibility and acceptability of implementing a TC-oriented intensive day treatment program to promote recovery in Korean women with AUD. This intervention merits further investigation as a potential strategy to help address alcohol abstinence self-efficacy, forgiveness and spirituality. RESUMEN

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a drinking-reduction program on drinking behavior, stages of change, drinking refusal self-efficacy, and resilience in Koreans with moderate alcohol use disorder. This study used a quasi-experimental nonequivalent control design. This study was performed from March 2015 to July 2015. The drinking-reduction program was conducted once per week for 11 weeks. This program improved drinking behavior, stages of change, drinking refusal self-efficacy, and resilience in the experimental group compared to the control group (p < .05, n = 34). The drinking-reduction program can be used as a nursing intervention for people with moderate alcohol use disorder.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: In this study the effects of forgiveness therapy on the resilience, self-esteem, and spirituality of wives of men suffering from alcohol abuse was examined. METHODS: The study design was a quasi-experimental design. Forgiveness therapy was conducted once a week for 12 weeks. Data were obtained from March 2012 to December 2013. Participants were chosen from women in two Alcohol Counseling Centers. Of the 29 participants, 16 were assigned to the experimental group and 13 to the control group. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, χ(2)-test, and repeated measure ANOVA. RESULTS: There were statistically significantly differences for resilience, self-esteem, and spirituality between the experimental and control groups. Forgiveness therapy improved the resilience, self-esteem, and spirituality in the experimental group compared to the control group (p<.05). In follow-up tests, the experimental group had a statistically significantly increase only in self-esteem. CONCLUSION: This study results show that forgiveness therapy is effective in improving resilience, self-esteem, and spirituality in wives of men suffering from alcohol abuse. Therefore, forgiveness therapy can be considered a useful nursing intervention to promote improvements in emotional stability and provide pain relief for these wives.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument to assess bullying of nurses, and test the validity and reliability of the instrument. METHODS: The initial thirty items of WPBN-TI were identified through a review of the literature on types bullying related to nursing and in-depth interviews with 14 nurses who experienced bullying at work. Sixteen items were developed through 2 content validity tests by 9 experts and 10 nurses. The final WPBN-TI instrument was evaluated by 458 nurses from five general hospitals in the Incheon metropolitan area. SPSS 18.0 program was used to assess the instrument based on internal consistency reliability, construct validity, and criterion validity. RESULTS: WPBN-TI consisted of 16 items with three distinct factors (verbal and nonverbal bullying, work-related bullying, and external threats), which explained 60.3% of the total variance. The convergent validity and determinant validity for WPBN-TI were 100.0%, 89.7%, respectively. Known-groups validity of WPBN-TI was proven through the mean difference between subjective perception of bullying. The satisfied criterion validity for WPBN-TI was more than .70. The reliability of WPBN-TI was Cronbach's α of .91. CONCLUSIONS: WPBN-TI with high validity and reliability is suitable to determine types of bullying in nursing workplace.

RESUMEN

Bullying in the nursing workplace can result in serious health-related outcomes for both nurses and patients who are under their care as well as the health care organizations. Bullying can erode the victim's professional competence and reputation and challenge the victim to maintain and improve professional identity. Although bullying can occur among co-workers, the most common form of bullying involves the abuse of power by superiors against subordinates. Persistent negative behaviors of a perpetrator indicates repeated negative behaviors of at least once or twice weekly by the perpetrator targeting the victim over period of time of at least 6 months and as long as 12 months. Building a conceptual framework of bullying specific to the nursing workplace is warranted to better understand bullying dynamics and its consequences while developing strategies to change the health care environment to a safer workplace for nurses.

RESUMEN

Nurses in the field of addictions and substance abuse have assumed, along with most of medicine, that alcohol abuse is a multifactoral health problem. The narratives of two college student's comments about their experiences of excessive drinking are considered from the human becoming theory as an alternative perspective to the causal theories which are dominant in the addictions and substance abuse fields. These issues are also considered from a human becoming perspective.

RESUMEN

Telomeres are the ends of the linear chromosomes of eukaryotes and consist of tandem GT-rich repeats in telomere sequence i.e. 500-3000 repeats of 5'-TTAGGG-3' in human somatic cells, which are shortened gradually with age. The G-rich overhang of telomere sequence can adopt different intramolecular fold-backs and tetra-stranded DNA structures, in vitro, which inhibit telomerase activity. In this report, DNA binding agents to telomere sequence were studied novel therapeutic possibility to destabilize telomeric DNA sequences. Oligonucleotides containing the guanine repeats in human telomere sequence were synthesized and used for screening potential antitumor drugs. Telomeric DNA sequence was characterized using spectral measurements and CD spectroscopy. CD spectrum indicated that the double-stranded telomeric DNA is in a right-handed conformation. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was performed for binding behaviors of antitumor compounds with telomeric DNA sequence. Drugs interacted with DNA sequence caused changes in the electrophoretic mobility and band intensity of the gels. Depending on the binding mode of the anticancer drugs, telomeric DNA sequence was differently recognized and the efficiency of cleavage of DNA varies in the bleomycin-treated samples under different conditions. DNA cleavage occurred at about 1% by the increments of 1 micromM bleomycin-Fe(III). These results imply that the stability of human telomere sequence is important in conjunction with the cancer treatment and aging process.
