BACKGROUND: Unlike gestational diabetic mellitus (GDM), which is strictly managed by most patients and physicians, obesity does not have proper management guidelines, and the importance of its management during pregnancy is often ignored. The aim of this study was to compare maternal and neonatal outcomes according to obesity and GDM, alone or in combination. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of 3,078 consecutive pregnant women who experienced prenatal care and delivery of a live singleton neonate between January 2016 and December 2020 at our institution. Study participants were categorized into 4 mutually exclusive groups, as follows: group 1, no GDM without obesity; group 2, GDM without obesity; group 3, no GDM with obesity; and group 4, GDM with obesity. RESULTS: Compared to group 2, group 3 had higher rates of pre-eclampsia, cesarean section including emergent cesarean section rate. Also, neonates in group 3 were heavier and had lower glucose levels compared to those in group 2. Of note, there was no significant difference in maternal or neonatal outcomes except the rate of large-for-gestational-age (LGA) between group 1 and group 2. Among the GDM groups, group 4 had higher risks for pre-eclampsia, cesarean section, and LGA infant status than group 2. CONCLUSION: Our data showed that obese women without GDM face higher risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes than women with supervised GDM and non-obese women. We also confirmed that adverse pregnancy outcomes associated with GDM were mainly attributable to obesity among women receiving GDM education.

Objective: This study was conducted to assess the current status of emergency contraception (EC) use in reproductive-aged Korean women. Materials and methods: This study utilized a population-based, cross-sectional online survey using a self-completed questionnaire in women aged 20-44 years who had visited a clinic in the previous six months for contraception counseling. Reason for use, anxiety, and counseling for further contraception at EC use were analyzed according to age, history of childbirth, and contraceptive failure in EC users. Results: Among 1,011 respondents, 461 (45.6%) had experience with EC use. Younger age, need for EC due to inadequate contraception, and high anxiety were highly prevalent among EC users. However, women in the 20s were less likely to get counseling for further contraception at EC use. Additionally, the proportions of women who used EC due to inadequate contraception during sexual intercourse and who experienced high anxiety were lower among women who had a history of childbirth. Women who had a history of contraceptive failure worried less about EC use. Conclusion: Our findings offer insight for developing and improving individualized strategies for appropriate contraception, especially in young Korean EC users.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, lung disorders have become a major health concern for humans. Allergic asthma is the most prevalent form of asthma, and its treatments target the inflammation process. Despite significant developments in the diagnosis and management of allergic asthma, side effects are a major concern. Additionally, its extreme heterogeneity impedes the efficacy of the majority of treatments. Thus, newer, safer therapeutic substances, such as natural products, are desired. Citrus junos Tanaka has traditionally been utilized as an anti-inflammatory, sedative, antipyretic, and antitoxic substance. In this study, the protective effects of Citrus junos Tanaka peel extract (B215) against lung inflammation were examined, and efforts were made to understand the underlying protective mechanism using an HDM-induced lung inflammation murine model. The administration of B215 reduced immune cell infiltration in the lungs, plasma IgE levels, airway resistance, mucus hypersecretions, and cytokine production. These favorable effects alleviated HDM-induced lung inflammation by modulating the NF-κB signaling pathway. Hence, B215 might be a promising functional food to treat lung inflammation without adverse effects.
