RESUMEN

The global rise in methamphetamine use and its negative effects warrants the need for research exploring harm reduction and treatment interventions for individuals with methamphetamine use disorder. Agonist medications have been utilized for years for the treatment of heroin and opioid addiction, but have yet to be incorporated into mainstream Canadian practice for methamphetamine dependence. This review aims to provide an overview of the current trends of prescription psychostimulant usage for individuals with methamphetamine use disorder from a Canadian perspective, identifies the barriers to accessing prescription psychostimulants for methamphetamine use disorder and highlights the nursing clinical practice implications in caring for individuals with the disorder. Discourse on the sustained abstinence and harm reduction debate is presented from the perspective of methamphetamine abuse is provided along with the neuropsychiatric complications of chronic methamphetamine use. The impacts of specific prescription psychostimulants on cognition are discussed as is the use of neuroimaging techniques to assess neuronal damage in methamphetamine users. Sign of toxicity, overdose and the contraindications for use of these prescription psychostimulants is also presented. The implications to nursing clinical practice in caring for this population is provided, touching on the clinical presentation of methamphetamine use, completing thorough assessment and screening and patient education. The findings of this review indicate the need for further research in this area exploring the benefits of prescription psychostimulants as a harm reduction and treatment intervention for the global problem of methamphetamine dependence.

BACKGROUND: The benefits that ensue evidence-based nursing practice (EBNP) in health care settings have been globally communicated to the nurses. However, the current clinical activities surrounding EBNP demand the involvement of nursing schools to accelerate this practice. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to synthesize, describe, and explore the evidence available to teach EBNP to undergraduate student nurses, so the students can continue to integrate EBNP in clinical settings upon becoming professional nurses. DESIGN: Systematic review with convergent qualitative synthesis. DATA SOURCES: Five electronic databases were searched; CINAHL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, ERIC, and Web of Science Core Collection. REVIEW METHODS: This study followed the guidelines for writing systematic reviews by the Joanna Briggs Institute. RESULTS: Two themes were generated; educational strategies, and EBNP knowledge and implementation. The latter theme had six sub-themes of timing, duration, content, delivery method, context, and prerequisites while the former theme had four sub-themes of knowledge acquisition, EBNP use and research utilization, collaborative teaching, and barriers and facilitators. CONCLUSION: Well-designed educational strategies have a positive impact on students' EBNP knowledge and skills. These strategies are well suited for promoting EBNP implementation in clinical settings when students qualify as nurses.

Introduction Globally, Evidence based nursing practice (EBNP) is becoming an expected norm for nursing practice. The small-scale activities surrounding this practice in African countries indicate a need for better approaches to enhance EBNP. One of these approaches is strengthening nursing education through EBNP education. Objectives The purpose of this paper is to provide strategies to African novice nurse educators to teach EBNP, with the ultimate goal of promoting it in clinical settings when the student nurses enter professional practice. Methods This is a discussion paper based on the results of a systematic review. Results In this paper, the authors create an understanding of EBNP, describe the state of nursing education in Africa, and propose the EBNP content to be taught as well as how to teach it. Conclusions Emphasis is on educational strategies that create student engagement, promote critical thinking, unite clinical and classroom settings, and are cost-effective within the context of Africa.

OBJECTIVES: To provide a comprehensive scoping review of the existing literature regarding the use of blended learning in undergraduate nursing education. To align the varied educational terms and definitions with the broad definition of blended learning. DESIGN: Scoping review following established methodology. DATA SOURCES: In consultation with library services, the academic literature was searched. Electronic databases searched included ERIC (OVID), Medline (OVID), PubMed, Nursing and Allied Health, and CINAHL Plus. REVIEW METHODS: A total of 189 potentially relevant nursing research articles published between the years of 2009 and 2019. Three reviewers independently reviewed the articles, leaving 37 relevant primary articles in the nursing field to be included in the scoping review. RESULTS: Nursing content delivered using blended learning approaches were organized into 8 themes. Themes include Professional Nursing Skills; Mental Health Nursing; Bioscience; Pharmacology, Specialty Populations; Nursing Assessment; Acute Care Nursing; and the Art of Nursing. A variety of blended learning approaches are being utilized in Undergraduate nursing education, the majority of which are happening in the classroom. CONCLUSION: This scoping review presents explicit the degrees to which blended learning is referred to in the nursing education literature and expanded the definition of blended learning to encompass the terminology associated with distributed, decentralized, hybrid, and flexible learning. There is a wide, varied, and expanding number of blended learning approaches currently being utilized in nursing education to teach a wide range of nursing content and skills. An expanded scoping review focused on blended learning in psychiatric nursing, licenced practical nursing, nurse practitioners, and all graduate level nursing education programs is recommended as is additional research into the use of blended learning in the lab or clinical setting.

INTRODUCTION: There is overwhelming evidence to support the delivery of high-quality health service at a lower cost with the use of advanced technologies. Implementing remote presence technology to expand clinical care has been fraught with barriers that limit interprofessional collaboration and optimal client outcomes. In Canada, government ministries responsible for correctional services, policing, and health are well positioned to link federal, provincial, and regional services to enhance service delivery at the point of care for individuals detained within the justice system. Using remote presence technology to link the detention center with relevant health services such as the emergency room has the potential to open up a new care pathway. RESEARCH QUESTION: The key research question was how a new intervention pathway for individuals detained in police service detention centers could be implemented. RESEARCH DESIGN: Utilizing an exploratory qualitative research design, interviews were undertaken with 12 police service and six healthcare participants. Data were transcribed and thematically analyzed. FINDINGS: Four main themes emerged and included role conflict, risk management, resource management, and access to services. A number of collaborative learning partnerships were identified by the participants. IMPLICATIONS: These themes reveal important facilitators and barriers to attending to the health needs of detainees within the police detention center through the utilization of remote presence.
