The cultivation of soilless tomato in greenhouses has increased considerably, but little is known about the assembly of the root microbiome compared to plants grown in soil. To obtain such information, we constructed an assay in which we traced the bacterial and fungal communities by amplicon-based metagenomics during the cultivation chain from nursery to greenhouse. In the greenhouse, the plants were transplanted either into agricultural soil or into coconut fiber bags (soilless). At the phylum level, bacterial and fungal communities were primarily constituted in all microhabitats by Proteobacteria and Ascomycota, respectively. The results showed that the tomato rhizosphere microbiome was shaped by the substrate or soil in which the plants were grown. The microbiome was different particularly in terms of the bacterial communities. In agriculture, enrichment has been observed in putative biological control bacteria of the genera Pseudomonas and Bacillus and in potential phytopathogenic fungi. Overall, the study describes the different shaping of microbial communities in the two cultivation methods.

A greenhouse experiment was conducted to study the effects of the application of a plant-derived biostimulant (Bioup® TF) on fruit quality and composition of two clusters (cluster II and cluster VI) of the cherry tomato cultivars 'Eletta', 'Kaucana', and 'Top Stellina'. The biostimulant application promoted fruit yield by 12% (up to 1.3 kg m-2 in 'Kaucana') and increased the concentrations of important functional constituents like phytoene, γ-tocopherol and ß-tocopherol by up to 16, 25, and 23%, respectively. Fruits from late-ripe cluster VI showed higher fruit weights, D-fructose, and total sugar contents than those from early-ripe cluster II (by 15, 7 and 5%, respectively), but reduced concentrations of acyclic carotenoids (phytoene and lycopene) and tocochromanols (mainly γ-tocopherol, -44%). 'Top Stellina' showed the highest responsiveness to the biostimulant, as particularly (all-E)-ß-carotene, phytofluene, and γ-tocopherol concentrations increased, indicating a genotype-dependent effect of the treatment. However, fruits of all treated genotypes showed a contextual decrease in D-fructose and total sugars in response to the biostimulant (on average by 7 and 10%, respectively), indicating a metabolic load burdening the accumulation of lipophilic antioxidants in cherry tomatoes at the expense of their taste-related C pool.

Vegetables represent pillars of good nutrition since they provide important phytochemicals such as fiber, vitamins, antioxidants, as well as minerals. Biofortification proposes a promising strategy to increase the content of specific compounds. As minerals have important functionalities in the human metabolism, the possibility of enriching fresh consumed products, such as many vegetables, adopting specific agronomic approaches, has been considered. This review discusses the most recent findings on agronomic biofortification of vegetables, aimed at increasing in the edible portions the content of important minerals, such as calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), iodine (I), zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), and silicon (Si). The focus was on selenium and iodine biofortification thus far, while for the other mineral elements, aspects related to vegetable typology, genotypes, chemical form, and application protocols are far from being well defined. Even if agronomic fortification is considered an easy to apply technique, the approach is complex considering several interactions occurring at crop level, as well as the bioavailability of different minerals for the consumer. Considering the latter, only few studies examined in a broad approach both the definition of biofortification protocols and the quantification of bioavailable fraction of the element.

Grafting is a valuable tool for managing problems of tomato soil-borne pathogens and pests, but often generates unpredictable effects on crop yield and product quality. To observe these rootstocks-induced changes, experimental designs including many rootstock-scion combinations are required. To this end, a greenhouse experiment was conducted on 63 graft combinations, involving seven cherry tomato scions grouped in large, medium and small-fruited, and eight rootstocks with different genetic backgrounds (crosses between Solanum lycopersicum and S. habrochaites or S. peruvianum or S. pimpinellifolium, plus an intraspecific hybrid), using ungrafted controls. The response of the graft partners was firstly analyzed individually using the environmental variance (σ2E), then by grouping them by classes. When analyzed individually, the scion genotype influenced fruit L*, b*, shape index, total soluble solids (TSS) and its ratio with tritatable acidity (TSS/TA), whereas plant growth and yield were unpredictable. After clustering the graft partners, some of these responses were attributable to the imposed classes. The S. habrochaites-derived hybrids maximized plant biomass, unlike the S. pimpinellifolium ones. Both classes reduced fruit biomass in small- and medium-fruited scions (by 11 and 14%, respectively). The S. habrochaites and S. peruvianum hybrids reduced a* and TSS, whereas promoted TA. L-ascorbic acid was reduced by grafting (from -23 to -45%), in the S. pimpinellifolium group too, indicating, even in low vigor rootstocks, a dilution effect worsening this nutraceutical trait of tomatoes.

The experiment addressed the effects of two storage temperatures, namely 10 (T10) and 20 °C (T20), on main quality and functional traits of three cherry tomato cultivars ('Eletta', 'Sugarland' and 'Ottymo'), after 0 (S0), 7 (S7) and 14 (S14) days of storage. At T10 both fruit weight and firmness were better retained during storage. At S14, T10 promoted fruit Chroma and overall fruit color deviation (ΔE*ab). Total polyphenols content (TPC) of fruits peaked at S7 (4660 mg GAE kg-1 DW) then declined at S14 (by 16%), with the highest values recorded at T10. Lycopene showed a similar trend, but with a higher average concentration recorded at T20 (488 mg kg-1 DW). ß-carotene content peaked at S14, irrespective of the storage temperature. At S14, the concentrations of phytoene and phytofluene were higher at T20 (48.3 and 40.9 mg kg-1 DW, respectively), but the opposite was found at S7. 'Sugarland' and 'Ottymo' showed the highest ΔE*ab along storage, with the former cultivar proving the highest TPC and lycopene content, whereas 'Eletta' did so for phytoene and phytofluene. Our results suggest that unravelling the possible functional interactions among these three carotenoids would allow for a better orientation of breeding programs, targeting the phytochemical evolution of tomatoes during refrigerated storage.

In this study, five allometric models were used to estimate the single leaf area of three well-known medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) species, namely basil (Ocimum basilicum L.), mint (Mentha spp.), and sage (Salvia spp.). MAPs world production is expected to rise up to 5 trillion US$ by 2050 and, therefore, there is a high interest in developing research related to this horticultural sector. Calibration of the models was obtained separately for three selected species by analyzing (a) the cultivar variability-i.e., 5 cultivars of basil (1094 leaves), 4 of mint (901 leaves), and 5 of sage (1103 leaves)-in the main two traits related to leaf size (leaf length, L, and leaf width, W) and (b) the relationship between these traits and single leaf area (LA). Validation of the chosen models was obtained for each species using an independent dataset, i.e., 487, 441, and 418 leaves, respectively, for basil (cv. 'Lettuce Leaf'), mint (cv. 'Comune'), and sage (cv. 'Comune'). Model calibration based on fast-track methodologies, such as those using one measured parameter (one-regressor models: L, W, L2, and W2) or on more accurate two-regressors models (L × W), allowed to achieve different levels of accuracy. This approach highlighted the importance of considering intra-specific variability before applying any models to a certain cultivar to predict single LA. Eventually, during the validation phase, although modeling of single LA based on W2 showed a good fitting (R2basil = 0.948; R2mint = 0.963; R2sage = 0.925), the distribution of the residuals was always unsatisfactory. On the other hand, two-regressor models (based on the product L × W) provided the best fitting and accuracy for basil (R2 = 0.992; RMSE = 0.327 cm2), mint (R2 = 0.998; RMSE = 0.222 cm2), and sage (R2 = 0.998; RMSE = 0.426 cm2).

BACKGROUND: Cultivation of cauliflower is diffused in Mediterranean areas where water salinity results in the need to identify alternative irrigation sources or management strategies. Using saline water during two growth phases (from transplanting to visible appearance of inflorescence or from appearance of inflorescence to head harvest), the present study aimed to identify the growth period that is more suitable for irrigation with low quality water in relation to cauliflower production and quality. RESULTS: Salinity affected cauliflower growth mainly when imposed in the first growth phase. The growth reduction depended mainly on ion-specific effects, although slight nutrient imbalances as a result of Na+ and Cl- antagonisms were observed. The use of non-saline water in the first or second growth period reduced both the osmotic and toxic effects of salinity. When salinity was applied during inflorescence growth, yield was reduced because of a restriction of water accumulation in the head. CONCLUSION: The results of the present study demonstrate the possibility of producing marketable cauliflower heads under conditions of salinity by timing the application of the best quality water during the first growth phase to improve fruit quality and during the second phase to reduce the negative effects of salinity on yield. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry.

Grafting can enhance the tolerance of vegetable crops to soilborne diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate whether different tomato scion-rootstock combinations may affect the plant susceptibility to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis-lycopersici (FORL), the causal agent of crown and root rot. A proteomic approach was used to investigate whenever the protein repertoire of the rootstock can be modified by FORL infection, in relation to cultivar susceptibility/tolerance to the disease. To this purpose, plants of tomato hybrids with different vigor, "Costoluto Genovese" (less vigorous) and "Kadima" (more vigorous), were grafted onto "Cuore di Bue" and "Natalia" hybrids, sensitive and tolerant versus FORL infections, respectively. Disease symptoms, plant biomasses, and protein expression patterns were evaluated 45 days after FORL inoculation. The extent of vascular discoloration caused by FORL in tomato plants grafted on "Natalia" rootstock (0.12-0.37 cm) was significantly lower than that of plants grafted on sensitive "Cuore di Bue" (1.75-6.50 cm). FORL symptoms significantly differed between "Costoluto Genovese" and "Kadima" scions only when grafted on sensitive rootstock. Shoot FW of non-inoculated "Kadima"/"Cuore di Bue" combination was 35% lower than "Kadima"/"Natalia", whereas no difference was manifested in inoculated plants. Shoot FW of inoculated "Costoluto Genovese"/"Cuore di Bue" combination was decreased of 39%, whereas that of "Costoluto Genovese"/"Natalia" of 11%, compared to control plants. Proteomic results showed a higher representation of proteins associated with pathogen infection in the tolerant rootstock, compared to the sensitive one, meaning a direct involvement of plant defence mechanisms in the tomato response to the pathogen challenge.

The average content of some classes of antioxidants is generally higher in cherry tomatoes than in normal-sized berries. The aim of this work was to assess the nutritional value of cherry tomato (cv. Naomi F1) by investigating the compositional pattern of berries harvested at different ripening stages and evaluating, in particular, all of the main antioxidants (carotenoids, ascorbic acid, phenolic compounds, and alpha-tocopherol) and the antioxidant activity of the water-soluble and water-insoluble fractions. Results confirmed the relatively high level of carotenoids in cherry tomato but showed that not all biologically active compounds necessarily increase in tomatoes picked at later stages of ripeness. Cherry tomatoes harvested at full ripeness exhibited the highest level of carotenoids and antioxidant activity in the water-insoluble fraction. On the other hand, no significant differences in ascorbic acid content were observed at different ripening stages, whereas the main phenolics content and the antioxidant activity of water-soluble fraction showed slight, but significant, decreases at later stages of ripeness.

The content of anthocyanins, flavonols, and carbohydrates of Tropea red onions (Allium cepa L.) was determined by HPLC and HPLC-MS. Cyanidin derivatives constitute >50% of total anthocyanins, but delphinidin and petunidin derivatives, which have not been reported in red onions thus far, were also detected. The flavonoid distribution in the different layers of the bulbs indicates that, after homelike peeling, the edible portion contains 79% of the total content of quercetin 4'-glucoside but only 27% of the anthocyanins. Storage of onions for 6 weeks in different conditions, all of them mimicking home storage habits, resulted in a decrease to 64-73% of total anthocyanins. The same trend was verified for the total antioxidant activity, which was reduced to 29-36%. A decrease in glucose and fructose content correlated with anthocyanin degradation was also observed. Storage at low temperature seems to better preserve the onion anthocyanins.
