RESUMEN

Topology, geometry, and gauge fields play key roles in quantum physics as exemplified by fundamental phenomena such as the Aharonov-Bohm effect, the integer quantum Hall effect, the spin Hall, and topological insulators. The concept of topological protection has also become a salient ingredient in many schemes for quantum information processing and fault-tolerant quantum computation. The physical properties of such systems crucially depend on the symmetry group of the underlying holonomy. Here, we study a laser-cooled gas of strontium atoms coupled to laser fields through a four-level resonant tripod scheme. By cycling the relative phases of the tripod beams, we realize non-Abelian SU(2) geometrical transformations acting on the dark states of the system and demonstrate their non-Abelian character. We also reveal how the gauge field imprinted on the atoms impact their internal state dynamics. It leads to a thermometry method based on the interferometric displacement of atoms in the tripod beams.

RESUMEN

In this work, a carbon replica derived from a vinylbenzenesulfonate-intercalated layered double hydroxide (CR-LDH) was applied to remove the Dicamba organochlorine herbicide from aqueous solution. The samples were characterized by several experimental techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis coupled with differential scanning calorimetry and mass spectrometry (TGA-DSC-MS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, N2 adsorption/desorption and zeta potential analysis. The CR-LDH sample presents a very high specific surface area (2345 m2 g-1). The adsorption experiment typically followed the Langmuir isotherm model and the adsorption kinetics was best fitted with a pseudo second-order model. The maximum adsorption capacity of Dicamba herbicide onto CR-LDH was 279 mg g-1. CR-LDH presented a higher adsorption capacity than other carbon adsorbent materials reported in the literature.

RESUMEN

In-depth understanding of the thermal stability of polymer-clay nanocomposites requires the use of advanced time-resolved techniques combined with multivariate data analysis, as well as the preparation of layered nanofillers with well-defined composition. The layered double hydroxide (LDH) compounds Zn2Al(OH)6·nH2O, Zn2Al0.75Fe0.25(OH)6·nH2O, ZnCuAl(OH)6·nH2O, and ZnCuAl0.5Fe0.5(OH)6·nH2O were prepared, each designed to specifically identify the physical barrier, radical trapping, and char formation contributions to the thermal stability of the PMMA-LDH nanocomposites. The unique combination of conventional methods (TG, DSC, and Raman spectroscopy) and synchrotron radiation techniques (XAS and WAXS), applied during PMMA-LDH heating, revealed the synergetic (of iron) and antagonist (of copper) effects of the LDH layers transformations on the three main endothermic steps of mass loss of the polymer. The diffusion barrier effect was proved by the downshift of the PMMA thermal decomposition temperature caused by the decrease of the LDH edifice thermostability when divalent cations were substituted in the LDH (passing from PMMA-Zn2Al(OH)6·nH2O to PMMA-ZnCuAl(OH)6·nH2O). For PMMA-Zn2Al0.75Fe0.25(OH)6·nH2O, a cooperative contribution of iron reduction, stabilisation of layered edifice, and radical trapping effects was observed for the thermal stability of the nanocomposite. LDH also acted as a diffusion barrier to the efflux and evaporation of depolymerized species, favouring the charring which exerts an additional contribution to thermal stability of the PMMA-LDH nanocomposites.

RESUMEN

A congenital mesenteric band is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction. We describe a case of upper gastrointestinal obstruction on a jejunal congenital band in a 2-year-old child. The challenge is to make the diagnosis in a patient with no history of previous surgery.

RESUMEN

Zn2Al/-layered double hydroxide (LDH) with intercalated MoO4(2-) was investigated as a potential source of soluble molybdate inhibitor in anticorrosion coatings for hot dip galvanized steel (HDG). The effect of solution pH, soluble chlorides, and carbonates on the release kinetics of the interleaved MoO4(2-) ions from the LDH powder immersed in solutions containing different anions was studied by X-ray diffraction, in situ attenuated total reflectance infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). The effect of the solution composition on the total release and the release kinetics was demonstrated. Less than 30% of the total amount of the intercalated MoO4(2-) was released after 24 h of the immersion in neutral 0.005-0.5 M NaCl and 0.1 M NaNO3 solutions whereas the complete release of MoO4(2-) was observed after 1 h in 0.1 M NaHCO3 or Na2SO4 and in alkaline solutions. The in situ ATR-IR experiments and quantification of the released soluble species by ICP-AES demonstrated the release by an anion exchange in neutral solutions and by the dissolution of Zn2Al/-LDH in alkaline solutions. The anion exchange kinetics with monovalent anions was described by the reaction order n = 0.35 ± 0.05 suggesting the diffusion control; for divalent anions, n = 0.70 ± 0.06 suggested the control by a surface reaction. Dissolution of Zn from coated HDG with and without Zn2Al/-MoO4(2-) fillers, leaching of MoO4(2-) from the coating, and the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy response of the coated systems were measured during the immersion in 0.5 M NaCl solutions with and without 0.1 M NaHCO3. Without carbonates, the release of soluble MoO4(2-) was delayed for 24 h with no inhibiting effect whereas with 0.1 M NaHCO3 the immediate release was accompanied by the immediate and strong inhibiting effect on Zn dissolution. The concept of controlling the inhibition performance of LDH hybrid coatings by means of the environment composition is discussed.

RESUMEN

Axial chirality is a key feature of many important organic molecules, such as biologically active compounds, stereogenic ligands and optically pure materials. Significant efforts in the field of the atropisomeric synthesis of biaryls have hence been undertaken over the past decade. Several major improvements of the already known methods to build up such chiral backbones (e.g. oxidative couplings and stereoselective Suzuki-Miyaura arylations) have been achieved and, in parallel, novel concepts have emerged enabling unprecedented synthetic routes toward molecules of this kind. These outstanding steps further unlocked the door to the preparation of previously difficult-to-access precursors of privileged ligands like BINOL, BINAM, QUINAP and many other molecules of interest.

RESUMEN

Imaging soft matter by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is anything but straightforward. Recently, interest has grown in developing alternative imaging modes that generate contrast without additional staining. Here, we present a dark-field TEM technique based on the use of an annular objective aperture. Our experiments demonstrate an increase in both contrast and signal-to-noise ratio in comparison to conventional bright-field TEM. The proposed technique is easy to implement and offers an alternative imaging mode to investigate soft matter.

RESUMEN

Cell wall appositions (CWAs), formed by the deposition of extra wall material at the contact site with microbial organisms, are an integral part of the response of plants to microbial challenge. Detailed histological studies of CWAs in fern roots do not exist. Using light and electron microscopy we examined the (ultra)structure of CWAs in the outer layers of roots of Asplenium species. All cell walls studded with CWAs were impregnated with yellow-brown pigments. CWAs had different shapes, ranging from warts to elongated branched structures, as observed with scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Ultrastructural study further showed that infecting fungi grow intramurally and that they are immobilized by CWAs when attempting to penetrate intracellularly. Immunolabelling experiments using monoclonal antibodies indicated pectic homogalacturonan, xyloglucan, mannan and cellulose in the CWAs, but tests for lignins and callose were negative. We conclude that these appositions are defense-related structures made of a non-lignified polysaccharide matrix on which phenolic compounds are deposited in order to create a barrier protecting the root against infections.

RESUMEN

In order to study the temporal dynamics of turbulence, the sweep time of our reflectometry has been shortened from 20 to 2 µs with 1 µs dead time. Detailed technical aspects of the upgrade are given, namely, about the stability of the ramp generation, the detection setup, and the fast acquisition module. A review of studies (velocity measurement of the turbulence, modifications of the wavenumber spectrum, radial mapping of correlation time, etc.) offered by such improvements is presented.

RESUMEN

This paper presents the preparation and characterization of hybrid hydrotalcite-type layered double hydroxides (Zn1-xAlx(OH)2HBSx.nH2O, with x=0.33) where HBS is the 4-phenol sulfonate, with a detailed analysis of the grafting process of this organic entity onto the host lattice. As a set of the usual techniques (XRD, TG-DT/MS, FTIR and 27Al MAS NMR) was used to characterize the hybrid materials, this work focuses on a joint study by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and some quantum-calculation modeling in order to highlight the nature of the interactions between the organic and the mineral sub-systems. For the as-prepared hybrid material, the main results lead to a quasi-vertical orientation of the organic molecules within the mineral sheets via H-bond stabilization. By heating the hybrid material up to 200 degrees C, the structure shrinks with the condensation of the organics; the different theoretical modeling done gives an energy-stable situation when a direct attachment of the HBS sulfonate group sets up with the mineral layers, in agreement with the recorded XPS experimental data.

RESUMEN

Since the development of X-ray computed tomography as a medical diagnostic tool, it was adapted and extended for many scientific applications, including plant structure research. As for many biological studies, sample preparation is of major importance to obtain good-quality images. Therefore, we present a new preparation method for fresh material which includes critical point drying and heavy metal staining. This technique enhances the contrast of fresh tissues, prevents artefacts such as tissue compression, and requires no embedding.

RESUMEN

The cytochrome P450 monooxygenase enzyme system is involved in the synthesis and/or degradation of a large number of endogenous compounds and in the biotransformation of drugs and other xenobiotics. 17alpha-Hydroxylase-C17,20-lyase (P450 17, CYP 17) is the key enzyme of the androgen biosynthesis. As androgens have been implicated in the development and progression of prostate cancer, this enzyme has become a promising therapeutic target. This paper will review the possible approaches dealing with P450 17 inhibition as a chemotherapeutic strategy in the struggle against prostate cancer.

RESUMEN

In 2000, 22,000 French military personnel were deployed overseas. The French military health service implemented a vector control strategy including personal protection by the use of permethrin preimpregnated battlefield uniforms (BFUs) and the application on the skin of a topical repellent (50% DEET). In 2000, French forces used an industrial process to impregnate cloth with permethrin by soaking it before cut-out of the BFU. A study was implemented in four experimental huts in Côte d'Ivoire to assess the field efficacy of the impregnated BFUs and their resistance to washing. Taking into account the systematic variations in each variable in the field and using a modeling based on logistic regression and discriminant analysis, this study showed that after 6 h without reapplication, the protective effects of the use of DEET as skin repellent was not significant, perhaps due to the high density of Anopheles mosquitoes during the night catching sessions and an average time of effective repellency of < 2 or 3 h in the field. The analysis also showed that the French process of industrial impregnation of permethrin of the BFU offered in 2000 some protection from mosquito bites but not enough to reduce significantly the incidence of malaria among nonimmune troops. No positive or negative interaction was noted when DEET and the impregnated BFUs were used together.

RESUMEN

(Z)-omega-Trimethylsilyl-(omega-2)-alken-1-ols are readily accessible by consecutive superbase metalation and silylation of (omega-1)-alken-1-ols. These versatile intermediates may be oxidized to give the corresponding (Z)-omega-trimethylsilyl-(omega-2)-alkenals which, in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid, can be converted into 2-vinylcycloalkanols such as 2-vinylcyclohexanol (2), isopulegol (4), and bis(2-vinylcyclobutyl) ether (8). The stereochemical outcome of these cyclization reactions suggests the interference of a novel electrodynamic effect.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Jejunal intussusception is uncommon in comparison with ileocolic form. It is more frequent in children over 2 years of age and has an atypical subacute presentation. An underlying anatomical cause is usually found. CASE REPORT: A 14-year-old boy was admitted for abdominal pain with bilious vomiting. The physical examination was normal, with only the ultrasonography showing an intussusception in the left hypochondrium. At laparotomy the diagnosis of jejunal intussusception was made; its reduction was impossible. A resection and end to end anastomosis was performed. The anatomopathology examination found a polyp in ectopic gastric mucosa. CONCLUSION: Jejunal intussusception must be better understood as its diagnosis could be made too late. Surgical exploration is the treatment of choice because of the usual underlying anatomical cause.

RESUMEN

A series of triazine derivatives was synthesized. The compounds were evaluated for tracheal smooth muscle relaxant and type 4 phosphodiesterase inhibitory activities. A highly significant correlation was observed between the two effects. Two compounds exhibited potent relaxant activity (EC50: 17 and 24 nM) and might be useful for the treatment of asthma.

RESUMEN

The Thiersch technique for treatment of rectal prolapsus has been largely abandoned because the metallic or non-resorbable wire is poorly tolerated and non-extensible. Silastic can fulfil these requirements and was used in 11 patients, including two who underwent reoperations. Good results were obtained in 9. This technique is simple and can be proposed when the general status of the patient does not allow surgical cure of the prolapsus.

RESUMEN

Noninvasive detection of acute cardiac allograft rejection remains a challenge. Analysis of the epicardial electrogram transmitted by unipolar telemetric pacemaker can be of help in the detection of rejection with myocytolysis but is hampered by extracardiac factors. Instead, the contribution of a bipolar pacemaker for this purpose was studied. The bipolar peak-to-peak amplitude of epicardial electrograms (BPPA) from 25 patients implanted with a bipolar pacemaker at the time of heart transplantation was measured at the time of endomyocardial biopsies. BPPA was expressed as a percent of the baseline value. A voltage drop of more than 10% was considered an indication of rejection. Of 118 biopsies, 80 were free of rejection and 38 showed mild to moderate rejection (Grade 1A = 12; Grade 1B = 17; Grade 2 or 3 = 9). The mean value of BPPA was less for grade 2 biopsies (86.4 +/- 17%) than for biopsies with no or mild rejection (101.3 +/- 14.3% for Grade 0, 101.4 +/- 13.8% for Grade 1A, and 98.6 +/- 18% in Grade 1; P < 0.05). Diagnostic concordance between BPPA measurement and biopsy results increased with the histological severity of rejection (Grade 1A = 1/12, Grade 1B = 5/17, Grade > 2 = 7/9). Acute rejection was diagnosed with a sensitivity of 34% for Grade 1A, 46% for Grade 1B, and 78% for rejection episodes with myocytolysis (Grade > or = 2). Specificity remained approximately 90% for all histologic grades.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
